I went with the bison burger and with the suggestion of my server opted for brussel sprouts instead of fries. Simply put, the food was flavorful. The bison of course fresh being in Montana. Great place in the downtown area of Bozeman. The place was busy and initially we were told it would take 30 min to be seated but a spot opened up quickly so that was kind of cool. I loved the decor inside; everything had a cowboy rancher feel and it made me, as a tourist, feel like I was experiencing something local and cherished. The food was good. I was warned the inside of my burger might be cold when I ordered the Marias burger medium rare, but it wasn't at all. It was perfectly done. It was my first time having a bison burger too, and it was delicious. Cheddar cheese was a great choice to pair with this burger. It was a filling meal and I felt quite satisfied with it. The only reason there are four stars and not five is because there was no option to order a burger along with fries. Everything was "a la carte," as it were, which meant if I wanted fries I had to order them separate. My friend and I split our fries. They were good but it just seemed odd not to offer fries as part of the meal package when most people will want them as a side anyway. Otherwise, great place. One of the best burgers I've ever eaten! My husband agreed! The burgers at backcountry are so flavorful and the toppings compliment them so well. I've also never been to a burger place that makes their own buns, they were so light and airy! We also tried the fries and cheese bites, amazing! I was hesitant about the Calamity Jane because of the cream cheese, but our server convinced me to try it and I'm glad i did! The staff was super-friendly, I like that it's all booths (minus the large-party tables, because I like the privacy/comfort of a booth. The burger (I got the Marias) was great...perfectly cooked, the toppings were plentiful but I could still fit it in my mouth, just delicious. (Best burger I've had in Bozeman thus far methinks.) I got the house fries...they're very yummy and don't need any sauce! But I did get the garlic Parmesan sauce and it made the fries taste like garlic fries without the up charge! You wouldn't think to get French onion soup in a burger bar, but it was really good. And such a unique concept to have build your own Mac n cheese. There's a variety of topping choices. I went with bacon and spinach which was a great compliment to the creaminess of the cheese sauce. The twirl of the noodles also helped hold the toppings on each bite. We chose to have bison as our patty rather than beef and were very pleased. The burger choices are very creative. My Calamity Jane combined bacon, jalapeño jelly and scallion cream cheese. The flavor combination was incredible. My husband had the Trapper. It was basically a mushroom Swiss burger with upgraded cheese and GRAVY. Way to take it up a notch!! Tasty Cheese Curds, But Where's the Rest? Stopped by to try their cheese curds, and while they were crispy, gooey, and full of flavor, the portion size was a joke. For the price, I expected more than a handful of curds. Don't get me wrong, they were good--perfectly fried with a nice crunch and just the right amount of cheese pull. But if you're sharing, be ready to fight over the last one. Honestly, I left still hungry and a little disappointed. If you're all about quality over quantity, you'll love them. We came in after a long day of travel from MD and we visit Bozeman often as my daughter lives here. Our first time trying back country. We had cheese curds they were good. We had a house salad with blue cheese the salad was good but as someone who loves blue cheese dressing it was possibly the worst I've had. We had the bison burger and it was delicious! We also had Mac and cheese and it was not good. It was watery and just flavorless honestly and we all tried it and all agreed just not at all worth the calories. But being southerners maybe our standards are high lol wouldn't order again but would definitely come back here. We also had onion soup and that was also delicious. Great food. It was a little busy at 8pm on a Tuesday evening. We got seated fairly quick, server was attentive and good came out quick. They have a nice selection of Craft Beers. We had a Marias Burger which was a Bison burger, it was awesome and a Backcountry Burger which was also great. The fries were great, especially with the Backcountry Sauce. Definitely would go back. Passing through, we needed to grab some dinner before getting out in to the sticks and decided a burger sounded great. We'd been doing a lot of hiking and exploring the days prior and could use a proper dinner. I ordered their daily special burger and a side of the haystack onion rings. The food was REALLY good, but I could have finished two of those burgers no problem. A few hours later, I got in to our arsenal of road food and made a tuna sandwich. My daughter and I tried to eat a meal at Backcountry Burger Bar. I ordered the brussels sprouts and when they arrived, I bit into them and they were absolutely some of the most painfully spicy brussels sprouts I've ever tasted. There was nothing on the menu to indicate that this was a spicy dish--sometimes restaurants will put a chili pepper or something next to the item to indicate that it's a very, very spicy dish, but that was not the case here. When I asked the waiter if I could send them back and get something else, they took it away, and then the waiter came back and said that the manager would not allow me to be refunded for the item that was essentially inedible. I found that a really really obnoxious attitude and very poor service for any restaurant, so I wanted to come up here and and let people know that they do not care about their customers. They do not care about good service. They don't care about basic kindness and doing the right thing when you've given somebody a dish that is painful and burning their mouth and inedible and you don't acknowledge that and make it right. read more

A great burger in Bozeman. Great service right when I walked in. I ordered the white porter. Never heard of that before buts it's a light looking beer that has bite like a coffee porter. Recommended by the staff and it was a great choice. I started with the curry fries which again I have never had but had great flavor. I then tried the wildfire burger and it came out looking plain but then BAM the damn thing had awesome flavor. I didn't leave a scrap of anything on this plate. I would definately come back. Good quality burgers but the quantity is lacking The ambience was nice, server friendly and for me the music was spot on The Maria bison burger unfortunately was nothing unique but it was good. Was hoping for a different and special taste but no dice. The electric chicken sandwich was good but leave the sauce on the side, it's not Nashville hot sauce, it's more of a hot spicy chipotle, not my favorite. The poutine is where things really went wrong, I have had authentic poutine in Montreal and this was not it. Some basic fries, same as the normal order fries with a small amount of gravy and yes we counted them 9 cheese curds. I would skip this one and just opt for the normal fries which are basically the same thing. The kids burgers were just about the same size as the normal burgers which was nice but just like the other sandwiches none of the entrees come with fries so you are paying $14 for a kids meal without a drink. read more
