This place is 5 stars because of Totti! While her regular gig may be as a school teacher, she has the level of service and hospitality of someone who has been doing this forever. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit, and Totti was a huge part of that. It's rare these days to leave a restaurant feeling like the employees actually made your day a little better, but Totti does exactly that. Her smile, positive attitude, and genuine joy in what she does are contagious. The food was pretty good too, but honestly, it was Totti's personality and exceptional service that made this visit memorable. Located in the heart of downtown Bozeman, Backcountry is serving up fresh burgers on house made buns. The establishment gives off rustic country vibes which adds to the homey feel. I went with the bison burger and with the suggestion of my server opted for brussel sprouts instead of fries. Simply put, the food was flavorful. The bison of course fresh being in Montana. However, it was the brussel sprouts which took me by surprise. Cooked to perfection, along with the sweet & tangy sauce, they're a hit! Salute to Backcountry Burger for the good grub and vibes. I come here frequently because they are Celiac safe (thank you). My burger was cooked well, but the GF bun was cold and the bottom bun was super greasy on the underside . The fries were cold and clammy. So, I waited for someone to check on me and ask how my food was. That never happened despite it being obvious that I was not eating any of it. Eventually (24 minutes) the waitress brought the bill and a to go box without any concern about the food Or my experience. It is time to find a new favorite burger place. read more

Great place in the downtown area of Bozeman. The place was busy and initially we were told it would take 30 min to be seated but a spot opened up quickly so that was kind of cool. I loved the decor inside; everything had a cowboy rancher feel and it made me, as a tourist, feel like I was experiencing something local and cherished. The food was good. I was warned the inside of my burger might be cold when I ordered the Marias burger medium rare, but it wasn't at all. It was perfectly done. It was my first time having a bison burger too, and it was delicious. Cheddar cheese was a great choice to pair with this burger. It was a filling meal and I felt quite satisfied with it. The only reason there are four stars and not five is because there was no option to order a burger along with fries. Everything was "a la carte," as it were, which meant if I wanted fries I had to order them separate. My friend and I split our fries. They were good but it just seemed odd not to offer fries as part of the meal package when most people will want them as a side anyway. Otherwise, great place. I've also never been to a burger place that makes their own buns, they were so light and airy! We also tried the fries and cheese bites, amazing! The food is fantastic! The staff were really good. I've been visiting Bozeman for about four days now and I myself am a bit of a burger connoisseur. I've had four burgers at different restaurants in Bozeman so far and they've all been fine, but this one was well crafted and dare I say exceptional, and for what it is, the price is very reasonable. It started off great, manager was super friendly at first. Chloe our waitress was not attentive. We have different food allergies in the group and when asking questions about the menu, Chloe responded with attitude and rude manner. When we asked for dressing she gave an attitude and my husband asked for bbq sauce that was supposed to be in the burger, it never came. I stood up to ask for the bill. When Chloe was about to hand me the bill, she let me know "With Parties of 8 or more you are required to leave a 20% tip". It took me aback, and suddenly it all made sense. We received horrible service but it didn't matter to Chloe because in her mind "I am required to tip her". We were ignored and ran out of water, we asked for more and it never came. Yes, we ate our food because we are not wasteful. We did receive plenty of eye rolls and attitude from the manager and Chloe. The burger (I got the Marias) was great...perfectly cooked, the toppings were plentiful but I could still fit it in my mouth, just delicious. (Best burger I've had in Bozeman thus far methinks.) I got the house fries...they're very yummy and don't need any sauce! But I did get the garlic Parmesan sauce and it made the fries taste like garlic fries without the up charge! You wouldn't think to get French onion soup in a burger bar, but it was really good. And such a unique concept to have build your own Mac n cheese. There's a variety of topping choices. I went with bacon and spinach which was a great compliment to the creaminess of the cheese sauce. The twirl of the noodles also helped hold the toppings on each bite. We chose to have bison as our patty rather than beef and were very pleased. The burger choices are very creative. My Calamity Jane combined bacon, jalapeño jelly and scallion cream cheese. The flavor combination was incredible. My husband had the Trapper. It was basically a mushroom Swiss burger with upgraded cheese and GRAVY. Way to take it up a notch!! A great burger in Bozeman. Great service right when I walked in. I ordered the white porter. Never heard of that before buts it's a light looking beer that has bite like a coffee porter. Recommended by the staff and it was a great choice. I started with the curry fries which again I have never had but had great flavor. I then tried the wildfire burger and it came out looking plain but then BAM the damn thing had awesome flavor. I didn't leave a scrap of anything on this plate. I would definately come back. We came in after a long day of travel from MD and we visit Bozeman often as my daughter lives here. Our first time trying back country. We had cheese curds they were good. We had a house salad with blue cheese the salad was good but as someone who loves blue cheese dressing it was possibly the worst I've had. We had the bison burger and it was delicious! We also had Mac and cheese and it was not good. It was watery and just flavorless honestly and we all tried it and all agreed just not at all worth the calories. But being southerners maybe our standards are high lol wouldn't order again but would definitely come back here. We also had onion soup and that was also delicious.
