But Jesus was the most knowledgeable, charismatic, articulate and genuine person I have been in the presence of in a long time. Back in Old San Juan again, this time for a shorter stay. We made sure to make a reservation at Marnalade for our first dinner in town. Once again, the food was some of the most exceptional that we have ever experienced. Our server, Angela, was intelligent, delightful and knowledgeable. She truly enhanced our experience. You must never come here without ordering the tiny white bean soup! They are so proud of it as their signature dish, they even give you the recipe to take home! The chef was visible in the room throughout the night, His kitchen is a well oiled machine and this gives him the opportunity to do some light socializing with the patrons of the restaurant and is appreciated by all. What a wonderful experience all around. Even if trying hard to be super critical, there is little bad to say about this restaurant. You can order menus items as normal - one app and an entree etc... Or you can do a tasting menu starting with 4 courses. The tasting menu isn't a chef's surprise type situation, but allows you to, with the 4 course option for example, try two apps, an entree and a dessert for I think it was $69. You can also add a wine pairing. The first two pages of the menu count for the app options. My friend and I both did this so we got to try a total of 8 different dishes, each one which was more amazing than the next. For starters: -Ceviche: This dish tasted so fresh. The lime spritzed snapper was delicious. Avocado was a great base to this dish. The ceviche was served with tostones which were a great as a spoon (server's recommendation). -Paella: This didn't come out looking as expected, but it tasted delicious. This dish was served with sushi looking pieces of paella containing chicken, peas and peppers. They were sitting in a very flavorful chorizo-tomato sauce. -Duck: The boneless duck was tender and so flavorful. The cheese on top this dish was a perfect partner in flavor to the other ingredients. -Rabbit & Garganelli pasta: This dish was garlicy and delicious with thick homemade noodles. For my main I got the halibut. The waiter who delivered it encouraged me to use my spoon to eat the broth that the fish was served in as well. The broth contained sweet corn and was lightly flavored with jalapeño. For dessert: An amazing bread pudding. This was perhaps the best I have ever had. It tasted like bananas, but no whole bananas were in sight. The flavor of butterscotch, rum, nuts and bananas was overwhelmingly delicious. The service was also perfection. Our server was super friendly and each time she delivered a new course she named all the ingredients in it and gave a great description. She was so happy and always smiling. The cocktail menu was also very impressive. There were various bourbon based drinks that were very creatively concocted. I got the "Cereal Killer" which contained organic granola, almond milk, honey and orange. The drink tasted better and better the more the ingredients soaked. My friend got the B3 which was blueberries and bourbon with beer. Such a great combo. The place is casual and there is not a dress code. It was a laid back atmosphere and very relaxed. THIS IS THE BEST RESTAURANT ON THE ENTIRE ISLAND-- HANDS DOWN! I have dined at Marmalade on my last two trips to San Juan (August 2018, May 2019). I was obviously blown away from my first visit, and I couldn't wait to get back! This restaurant offers a "tasting menu" which is exactly my style. For a set price (I believe $75 per person), you can chose 4 courses, or have the chef recommend them to you. Every dish was spectacular, but you must, must, MUST try the tiny white bean soup. It was so good on our first visit that we ordered a second serving, and they also provided us with the recipe to take home. What's best about this restaurant is that they truly care about their customers, their reputation, and the level of service they provide. On our second visit, they remembered that we had dined there before, and also remembered my allergies without me even saying anything. They are also extremely knowledgeable about their wine lists, and will make some thoughtful pairings for you based on the dishes you order. Omg the food was every bit as delicious as the previous reviewers have said. We went with the 5 course dinner. My friend got - ceviche, popcorn shrimp, lobster risotto, sea bass and bread pudding. Located in Old San Juan, surrounded by the Caribbean music and culture native to Puerto Rico, this little hidden gem has been in the same spot inviting locals and tourists through its doors for thirteen years. Novio brought me to this fine establishment a couple of year ago on my birthday so I have him to thank for this one, credits to you Novio. I have returned twice since, which is a lot considering the high price tag that comes along with a four course meal, extravagant drinks, excellent service, sexy classy ambiance, and amazing music. This time we went for La Suegras' (Mother-in-laws) birthday. We dressed up real nice (not too nice though I would never where heels in Old San Juan unless I want a trip to the hospital for a broken ankle) Novio made reservations one or two days in advance, its not too hard to make them but make sure you do. We arrived at six for a table of six and they promptly took us to our table which was decorated with rose petals which means that its a special occasion. Once seated, our server and sommelier Moises (a wonderfully jovial man who treated us ever so well) took our drink orders: One red Oregon Wine( Moises recommended, Calle8, Urban Hipster, GLOBAL WARMING (amaaaaazing drink) and Bob Marley (recommended by Moises himself). I can say with 100% certainty that every single drink was absolutely delicious ( I had a great night). Afterwards it was time to order our meals. Abuela has a dietary restriction, she cannot eat nuts, seeds, or spicy foods and our amazing server Moises spoke to the kitchen in order to modify certain dishes to fit her diet. Abuela, Suegra and Novio ordered the popcorn shrimp I ordered the ceviche (with basil tostones), Suegro ordered poke which came with some cloud like rice crackers. Again, amazing. For the second course, Abuela, Suegra and I ordered the Tiny White Bean Soup, I could drink a gallon full of that soup no joke. Novio ordered gnocchi and Suegro ordered the rabbit. This time, it was not amazing, it was MAGNIFICENT! For the third course Novio and I ordered Pork cheeks on black bean mash, Suegro ordered the Beef Fillet, and Suegra and Abuela ordered the Red Snapper. I don't know what word is better than Magnificent, but this food was. By that time we were stuffed but then came dessert. I ordered CHOCOL8 eight textures of chocolate on one dish. Abuela and Suegra were stuffed but they paid for dessert so abuela ordered creme brule and Suegra, Suegro and Novio each ordered a Cordial, Nocturno. It was a coffe type cordial with a lot of alcohol. We ate everything. Peter, the chef came out to talk to us and he said a small tear would run down my face as I experienced Chocol8. He had a small but interesting conversation with the table before moving on to the next guests. We lost an arm and a leg once the check came, but thats I we only go once a year. I love this place, and I highly recommend it to anyone who visits Puerto Rico. Everything from the witty names for the cocktails to the amazing bottle of wine to the spectacular food from start to finish was probably one of the best experiences I have had to date. Absolutely fantastic restaurant. As a vegetarian I rarely have options. I had more options here than anywhere I've ever been yet many meat options for non veggies. Expensive but worth it. I suggest the wine and tasting menu pairing. Off of the veggie options, the spaghetti and meatballs were the best. It wasnt faux meat, more of an Indian flavor lentil mix. I drank the global warming which had a jalepeno infused ice cube in the drink. I'd compare it to a margarita. The staff was fantastic. One of the best meal experiences I may have ever had... from the ambiance to the service to the food to the wine pairings to the cocktails, the entire dinner was all top notch, 5 stars across the board. We were here on our honeymoon, and the restaurant sat us at a romantic table with rose petals scattered around the table, which was a lovely and thoughtful touch. We each did the 4 course tasting with wine pairings, and every single bite we had was flavorful, creative, and perfectly presented and prepared- my favorite dish was that day's special of pork belly & scallop (unbelievably good), but everything else was amazing too (the white bean soup, the sea bass, the choco l8, and the Cereal Killer cocktail). The chef himself even came over to check in and chat with us, which I felt showed how much he cared. As awesome as the food was, what truly blew me away was the wine pairings- they were utterly perfect, and nothing we ever (ever!) would have thought or picked out or even considered on our own, with a lot of rare and unique wines we had never heard of. I enjoyed how there were different styles of tables and seats and spent much of my time gazing at the decoration. I owe it to our server (or servers) who gave us the best possible experience ever! Our server introduced himself to us (I feel so bad for not remembering his name, but this review is for many months ago) and asked us if it was our first time there (and yes it was), then he proceeded to to spend over 10 minutes explaining everything to us. He was so sweet, patient, and made us feel so much at ease. Everytime we went to the bathroom, he would fold our napkins beautifully and set it on the chair. I was in the restroom when desserts came and he even brought it back to the kitchen, so it wouldn't melt while I was away. And oh gosh, the food was a piece of art. It was absolutely incredible, and what I would call perfection. Not only did it look good but it tasted amazing. My boyfriend and I order the $79 5-course meal, among the items we ordered was the white bean soup, which fellow yelpers raved about, and it was perfectly creamy and delicious. Well, I could use that to describe every dish we ordered. I'm not really a sweet dessert fan, but the desserts here are unbeatable. The textures and flavors were perfect. Many of my friends have been to this restaurant and have said nothing but great things. I had the opportunity to go June 10th, 2019 and it was amazing. I was EXTREMELY limited because of a dietary restriction, unfortunately, and after Umberto, the bartender, spend a decent amount of time going over the menu with me so that i understood my few options the owner/chef came to me. Interesting idea, but execution was lacking. AEE -- Early gray, sparkling wine and something else. Tasting like a spritz with a hint of astringent tea. Small plates: Ceviche -- solid, but nothing amazing Golden beats - well prepared but pretty average with goat cheese. Kimchi -- original and spicy but not resembling the traditional dish. White bean soup -- great balance of flavors and textures. Would order a gallon to go. Risotto of lobster -- lobsyer was great, but risotto was a smidge too rich. Really well prepared though Fois Gras - perhaps the star or the meal. We'll prepared. Great pairings. Black truffle tagliatelle -- couldn't figure out if it was over or under cooked. Lots of black truffles but somehow lacking. Mains Lamb -- well sauced but overcooked. Came out dry. Beef -- very solid. Service Good, but average for a standard restaurant. 25 minute gap between 1st and 2nd courses. Wine Outstanding across the board. This was not just the best dining experience I had during a trip this past month to San Juan (which is saying a lot, considering the high quality of the food in the city), but as a proud New Yorker who loves my local food scene at home, I hate to admit that this was easily the best meal I have had in 2 or 3 years, and certainly one of the best I have ever had. We received outstanding service during the entire 5 course tasting menu we enjoyed. Each course was thoughtfully prepared and delicious. The Fire and Ice salad, and the heirloom tomatoes (off menu) were some of the more unique salads either of us have ever had. The surf and turf, as well as the lobster risotto, and the duck were the types of life changing menu items I only dream of when dining out. My girlfriend confidently told me that her Vegan tasting menu (which I also tasted and loved) was the best Vegan meal of her life. The chef graciously topped off our already perfect meal with a selection of extra desserts. The Baked Alaska, the Choco L8 and the Bread Pudding were standouts. The restaurant has a classy yet unpretentious feel to it, and has wonderful ambience for a long, romantic dinner. This place is an absolute MUST go for a fine dining experience in San Juan, and doubly so if you are a Vegan or a group of people who are mixed Vegan/non-Vegan. Excellent ambience and service across a 5-plate fixed price dinner. Expect to spend around $200 to $250 per person all-in for the dinner and two drinks (we did not do the wine pairing). As an experience, it was an interesting evening where I expected to be wowed by a variety of flavors. And indeed, some plates, including the tiny white bean soup (which is sublime) were very good. But in general, I found myself longing to feel more of a difference from plate to plate - as I progressed from the second to third and third to fourth, the flavors began to lose meaning and it just felt as if I was dining on one large entree, even though each plate was meant to be very different from the previous. This does not detract from how good each plate is - each by itself would make for a fine dining experience - but sampling from multiple plates across our table the feeling of similarity from plate to plate could not be avoided. Hoping for a clear change by the time I landed on the chocolate dessert which many rave on, I found what should have been an interesting blend of chocolate flavors to be instead overwhelmed by the sugary taste that enveloped it. Would I visit again? Likely not. Was it worth the experience? I want to say yes, our party had a lovely time and the food was great, but I have to say no based on what I expected to be a culinary expedition that ended up seeming like one long visit to a single site. read more

So meh. So unfortunate. I was really excited about this dinner..I picked this place for our last night in Puerto Rico as well my boyfriends birthday dinner. For this last hurrah I did my research, got my hair done and skipped lunch to enjoy my dinner. A lot of my review will be comparing marmalade's service and food to 1919 where we had dinner the night before. Right off the bat when we came in their was a slight aloof vibe. In contrast at 1919 when we walked in the host greeted us with as though she was so glad we decided to eat there. The wait staff was kind and friendly. We ordered the 6 course tasting menu. My boyfriend paired his with wine. I didnt recall everything we ate until I looked at the menu. But I'm not surprised because nothing was so amazing and memorable. The things I liked: my salmon and minestrone dish had great flavor, the fish was fatty and almost cooked perfectly, a little too done for my taste. My bf had the lamb that he loved, and a chocol8 dessert that he also liked. I remember a few dishes being overly spicy, and lots of dishes that felt like the flavors were independent and not a perfect compliment to each other. When we asked if they could get us a cab we were told to walk to the plaza, it didn't feel nice. I was freezing at the restaurant, but you probably wouldn't be. If you get chilly you might want to bring a sweater. Shout out to the maître d' who I found very attentive and kind. I hate to give a low rating to a restaurant that is trying hard. I saw how the chef answered all the reviews and I like his sense of humor( his 11 year old is the wine specialist - that's awesome). Unfortunately it was a one star experience for me. The extra star is for the maitre d', the testones, the beet salad, and the host who found us a regular table instead of the bar top. Maybe we were spoiled from 1919 were so many dishes were over the top, mind blowing , and such a perfect experience. There are a lot of great reviews so maybe we were just there on an off night? I HIGHLY MARMALADE!! The best $$$$ restaurant in Puerto Rico! Walking by the place you would never know but once you're inside prepared to be amazed. Service was impeccable! We ordered the four course menu with wine pairing and I would definitely suggest it. The chef even sent out extra items to taste between courses. There wasn't anything I didn't like and we were so full by the time we finished dessert. Allow a couple hours for this delightful food experience. read more
