Let's start with the food, which was excellent. The food alone would be 4.5 stars. Having lived in San Francisco for 3 years, I would agree with other reviewers that this place can keep pace with the top restaurants in the best food cities. For appetizers, my hubby and I had the yellowtail poke and the bean soup. Both were excellent, and I again echo other yelpers in saying: get the soup! For entree, my husband had the lamb, which was divine. Seriously, incredible flavor, perfectly braised, and moist. I had the scallops, which were also perfectly cooked, and the broth they were served in was amazing! I quite literally stole my husband's spoon to spoon up the broth.
Now, to the service, which overall gets maybe 2-2.5 stars. We arrived about 30 min early and happily took a seat at the bar. We ordered a bottle of wine, which we drank throughout the meal. The bartender was wonderful. She opened the wine for us, poured us a glass and a refill, got us water without us asking, and was generally attentive and friendly! We decided to pay for our bottle before we went to our table to be sure she got the tip for the wine, since she did the bulk of the service for it.
Once we were seated, our server (named Janelle, I think) took quite a while coming over to us. When she did, we were given the menus, but with zero explanation. It was fine--we knew we wanted to do a la carte--but it was different than other reviewers who said they got a full explanation of the tasting menus, etc. While we were waiting we saw that our neighbors had multiple complaints about the tasting menu, and their waiter graciously resolved every issue they had, without ever losing his smile--as it should be in such a restaurant.
Our waitress came back, and I ordered my appetizer and entree, after which she asked if we wanted to do a tasting menu... Obviously, no, but also a little late with that suggestion, no? Then my husband ordered, and asked to have his meal on a separate bill than mine. When our waitress hesitated, looking annoyed, he explained that his work is paying for his meal, so we needed 2 checks. It seemed to take her a while to process this, and she seemed irritated. Then she asked whose check the wine would be on, and we informed her we already took care of that at the bar. She appeared annoyed by that, as well.
The rest of service was adequate but cold, formal, and not friendly. We found those who delivered our food to be far more helpful and nice than our waitress, and enjoyed their explanations of our dishes. In the meantime, we also overheard our neighbors asking about how to get a cab, to which their waiter replied he would call one for them--and shortly thereafter, their cab was ready.
We ordered the bread pudding for dessert. Overall, it was very tasty, although it could have been heartier and was $12 for a pretty small dessert. Anyway, our waitress appeared irritated once again when I asked that she put this on my part of the bill, asking "You're just getting one?" Um, yes. Couples often share desserts, but thank you for your attitude.
However, the icing on the cake was the very end of our meal, and is ultimately my reason for giving 3 stars. If I could, I'd give 3.5, but leaving a sour taste in my mouth after dropping over $200 on dinner makes it a round-down situation. We asked her how to get a cab--knowing full well that they would call one for us (not just because they did it for the other couple near us, but because this is what most upscale restaurants will do). Man, were we surprised when she told us to leave the restaurant, turn left, and find the guy holding the sign that says 'taxi stand'. Without much of a choice, we left irritated and offended.
As it turns out, there was no man holding a taxi stand sign down the block. There was a sign that says taxi stand, which is not where the taxis actually came. The sign was also surrounded by several very drunk men. One of them motioned for us to follow him to the taxis, and he led us to the cabs, slurring along the way. I cannot tell you how uncomfortable I was, and this was with my husband, who is a big guy, and with whom I always feel safe. I cannot imagine being in this situation with a girlfriend. I think the drunk man wanted a tip for helping us get there too. So weird.
We did end up in a cab which got us to the hotel safely, but it was a terrible experience, made worse by the fact that we WITNESSED Marmalade calling a cab for other diners. It was offensive that they would not do the same for us. I have never been treated like that at a restaurant of this caliber, and I have eaten at my fair share! We are not a high maintenance dining couple, but we do expect adequate service when we are paying these prices. Other restaurants of this quality are willing to bend over backwards to accommodate their guests, and I was sorely disappointed that the service we received was so poor. It's really too bad, as the food was delicious. Such a sour way to end the evening. read more
