I have driven by Marshall's many times but usually too early for lunch. Today I was having my car smog checked and decided to order a to go sandwich from Marshall's. Just walking up to the door smelled so delicious - I ordered the tri tip sandwich to go with potato salad and couldn't wait to get home so I could indulge. Loved that they separated the meat from the very generous cut of bread so the bread wouldn't get soggy. I savored every bite after I got home. I will be back! An unexpectedly great place. This would be a great addition to Diners, Drive-ins and Dives! It is in an industrial area and the outside is nothing spectacular, but the inside is quaint yet rustic. The service was super quick and really friendly! I made a call-in order for my first time and was not expecting much. Boy, was I surprised! Food was great! Darn good, no-frills tri-tip in a fun, western-style setting. I got the tri-tip dinner with garlic bread, coleslaw and a salad. The tri-tip was fantastic; the cook clearly knew what he was doing, and the meat was perfectly medium rare, tender and juicy. They also didn't slather it with sauce (you can get some good sauces on the side though, if you want), which I appreciate because I like having my meat plain. The garlic bread was also good. I wasn't a big fan of the coleslaw; it was overly wet and sloshy to me, and I didn't particularly care for the taste. The salad was just fine. The setting is very fun; the restaurant looks like a hole in the wall from the outside, but you can locate it from the rooster statue on the roof. The grill is also located right outside, so the smell of barbecue wafts into the establishment. Delicious. The decor is old-style western themed and quite fun; there are things like sheriff's badges on the walls, and the atmosphere is generally laid back and cool. Don't expect much fanciness--your stuff will come with plastic utensils with everything packaged in plastic containers, so as I said, this is no-frills dining. Overall, the cool atmosphere and the excellently cooked meats are definitely worth the trip! The sides are just fine, but the meat steals the show. read more

Ever heard of a BBQ place that serves delicious barbecue in the form of plates, salads and *drumrolls* burritos?! My coworker told me about Marshall's Bodacious BBQ and I wanted to know exactly what made this place so bodacious. The first thing you'll notice when you leave your car to walk towards the place is the open grill cooking up some delicious, mouthwatering smoked BBQ, and there's nothing like that to welcome you right in. We ordered their famous tri-tip barbecue burrito with lettuce, tomatoes, pinto beans and sour cream and it was pretty darn delicious. You have the option of adding guacamole but I wasn't in the mood for that then. We were also given the option to choose different levels of spicy barbecue sauce so we went all out and chose the spiciest one and boy were our noses running. Although the quality of the tri-tip wasn't my favorite, I'd still come back. I appreciate their variety of entrees and sides. Oddly enough, my friend got a side of garlic bread and it looked delicious. We enjoyed sitting outside and indulging in some delicious southern fusion Mexican food (or shall I say Latin fusion southern food?) with a cold beer and some of the most delicious spicy BBQ I've ever tried. Marshall's Bodacious BBQ is so delicious. They offer lots of BBQ options for your watering mouth. This BBQ will leave you wanting more. I had ordered the BBQ pulled pork sandwich with side of Macaroni Salad. The order came out fast. The sandwich is two pieces of a Texas style toasted bread and the Pulled Pork in the center. It's not overly filled with the sauce and you definitely get a great amount of meat in the sandwich which makes it worth the price. They also have their own BBQ sauce you can add for more flavoring. Great looking place and service and cool vibe from staff but had the beef ribs and they were seriously one star. Black and burnt and dry with almost no meat on the charred bones. Im leaving 3 stars as dont feel its fair to slam their rating when I didnt try the tri tip or spareribs. The chili was good and tasty and the bread pudding was delish. I have been going to this place about once a month for several years. I usually get the full rack of beef ribs. I was there yesterday and picked up my order about 3 o'clock. For the first time in years, the ribs were overcooked very tough and dry, the potato salad was excellent as usual. Service was perfect. I don't know if it was just because I was in between the lunch and dinner hours that the meat was so overdone. Hopefully this is a rare occurrence and will not happen again. Stopped by here to pick up some beef ribs to take home... Service was pretty good, helpful on the phone and in person at the counter. Ribs were pretty good! They were meaty and flavorful, even without the BBQ sauce. We asked for a few of each type of BBQ sauce so we could sample them all. It lacked meat I found maybe 4 small chucks in the entire burrito beans were very light and the child Verde was "different" not spicy at all just not sure what all the green leafy stuff was. When you drive by, you can smell the deliciousness! then when you walk up, you see them BBQing in the front. After ordering and receiving your food, you get to sit in BBQ Heaven. Marshall's is a staple with that giant rooster sitting on the roof that just catches your eye from the highway 101. Pull onto Ventura Blvd and the Smokey grill lures you in! They have their massive grill pit backed right up to the entrance so you actually see the food cooking before your eyes while you wait in line to order. They've adapted to the covid pandemic well with plenty of outdoor seating and online ordering and easy pickup out side. The food and service is usually pretty good here. I would say I eat here a couple times a month. I usually order the Tri tip Sandwich medium rare and on the garlic bread is delicious. If you don't ask for your meat a particular way they will serve you the Tri tip cooked like boiled shoe leather (which in my opinion is disgusting). Their macaroni salad is also delicious but their potato salad is not, the potato salad is more like a gluey mashed potato salad with no discernible chunks of potatoes. Also disgusting. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but the food is delicious. They have the best pulled pork I've ever had! The meat was smokey tasting with a delicious BBQ sauce. Someone told me that this was the best BBQ around so I had to check it out. It is nothing fancy, but they do classic BBQ very well. The tri-tip sandwich was my favorite. It was classic tri-tip cooked to perfection. The pork ribs were nice and tender, though I could have gone for more flavor on them. You can choose from a variety of BBQ sauces to dip your meat in so you can tailor the flavor to your taste. The baked beans were the best side! They were sweet, smoky, and so flavorful. I'm sorry I ate at Marshall's about a week ago and it just wasn't very good. I'm noticing that 4 or 5 star restaurants in Ventura are nothing like a 4 or 5 star restaurant in Santa Barbara or Los Angeles. I had the tri tip sandwich with coleslaw. The tri tip was very dry and chewy with a bit of gristle, the bbq sauce was very ketchupy with no spiciness or heat. The roll itself was good, as was the coleslaw. We have had our eye on trying this place for quite some time and finally got to last night. My hubby loves BBQ and meat so I'll reward him every once in a while lol. We ordered a combo 2 meat dinner which was enough for me my hubby and daughter. We picked up the food and we had gotten a half rack of ribs and tri-tip with coleslaw, Mac & cheese, and garlic bread. We also ordered desert which was New Orleans bread pudding I think. Let's start with the meat; it was well cooked but very dry. They give you the bbq sauces on the side instead of letting it sink into the meat and that kind of killed it for me especially because the bbq sauces were so cold. They should've been slightly warm or on the meat in my opinion but it was a lot of meat. The coleslaw was very delicious and the garlic bread was soft and tasty too. The Mac and cheese was bland and nothing special. The desert was the worst. It was hard as a rock and super cold as if it was old and refrigerated and usually that kind of desert is best fresh or warm at least.
