I often pass thru Lynden on the way to and from Chilliwack BC. Being from the SF Bay Area, and having lived in Texas, I'm a bit of a Mexican food snob. This place is great. They have a few local beers on tap, in addition to the standard Mexican drafts. I had the Freight lager - twice. My wife had an excellent Lynden margarita. The mole sauce is complex, not spicy, and I would definitely order it again. If you live in the area, or are just passing thru, give this place a try. You'll be happy you did. read more

So to say I am a Mexican good fanatic, would likely be saying to little for my love for Mexican food, ask my husband lol. This place hits all my happy buttons! We have the Enchiladas Trio with a cheese enchilada with green sauce, a shredded beef enchilada with mole, and a chicken enchilada with red sauce, all were delicious. The cheese was stringy and hot, the mole slight sweet, and the rice and beans were perfect. The salsa was a combo of yummliciousness, and for those who love cilantro (me! Me! Have I said me?!) this is perfect in cilantro flavor. Chips were nice and warm and crispy. We will definitely be back. Also separate from the food, the restroom was clean, so clean, smelled of fruit and had a lovely bench seat to stick all your stuff (purse, coat, hat, scarf, you know... everything). What a great restaurant! My wife and I love Mexican food but it's very difficult to find a decent place in Washington. We have tried them all around the Bellingham area in the past few years and seem to always leave unimpressed. Sometimes the food is not authentic and other times the service is slow and without interraction. Marta's is nothing like other local Mexican places. We actually met Marta and she was engaging. She has a pride in her establishment that you don't often see. She has great pride in the cooking and it shows. My wife had to ask me to stop making the yum sounds, put down my fork, and take a breath between bites. It was that good. We will be back every time we are in the area. read more

Food was good. Not great but good. I would have considered going back if it wasn't for our server. We sat in the bar area. I watched from the time I walk in to the time w left. She checked on the table behind us. And in front of us. Also over heard her in Spanish (I understand) taking trash. Not about us but trash non the less. We had to chase her down for everything we wanted. No service really. Upon leaving she told the table behind us"goodnight friends. Have a good night." (In Spanish" I then replied at least you got service. As a fellow minority I would hope to get some type of service. We had to ask for everything. A nice opportunity to taste all of their enchilada offerings ( chicken, beef, and cheese) and all their sauces ( green, mole, and red) and they are all pretty good! The mole was the surprise win in a field of delicious food enchiladas. The salsa was fresh and delicious, and they made the chips fresh! Food is decent though very small helping of the pico de gallo when we asked for it. Their tortillas they home make so I always have a thing with a weird taste of the tortilla whether it's the corn or flour kind. Friendly staff! As for food, if you're used to quality Mexican, Martas Cocina is a 3/5. Just about every time we order to go, there's something wrong with our order and portions are getting smaller. The rice, beans and chicken lack flavor. If you are gluten free, there are no options for you as their corn tacos have flour. We do enjoy their fresh salsas! Overall, for the price they are charging now, we prefer the Bordertown Mexican truck. read more

Usually I find Mexican restaurants to be pretty similar to each other and sometimes I feel really heavy and unhealthy after. This restaurant is different. The food is really fresh and didn't seem like too much oil. What I love the most is that they include more variety compared to most standard Mexican places. Being a vegetarian it can be difficult to have many options with Mexican food, as you usually may have to just have rice and beans. However, here, I like that they have a whole vegetarian section and include vegetables like spinach and mushroom for example. The service is good and friendly too. Can't wait to go back! read more

Marta's is very much the same as any other Mexican food establishment. Very similar menu with little variation. Not bad, nothing extraordinary. My boyfriend and I were the only diners on a Saturday night. Service was attentive and provided by a pleasant waitress. Finally got a chance to check this place out. Located in the Fairway shopping center in Lynden, Marta's is a fairly mediocre Mexican restaurant. Service was excellent and our waitress was super sweet. The chips were standard, as was the salsa but what set them apart was the offering of pico de gallo. We ordered two margaritas on the rocks and they were adequate and priced on par with other restaurants. I ordered the Enchilada Trio, 3 enchiladas each with a different filling and different sauce. The plate was huge and included a cheese enchilada with red chili sauce, a shredded beef enchilada with verde sauce and chicken enchilada with mole sauce. I think the meat and sauces on each were pretty standard, they were fine, none were particularly outstanding. My main comment is that the food was barely heated through. I doubt that they had been sitting in the window and got cold waiting for the waitress because service was very fast. I can only imagine that the food was not heated properly and also placed on cold plates. My husband had an enchilada and a chimichanga. Again, really boring. I have to mention the fact that the owner was in house at the time which in itself is fine but the way he was dressed (in dirty, thread bare jeans, a dirty t shirt with an old red puffer vest and a red ball cap) didn't speak well for the cleanliness and professionalism of the restaurant. He was a looming presence that rather degraded the overall ambiance. In short- this is your standard, run of the mill, strip mall Mexican food restaurant. It's fine. read more

My family and I have been going to Marta's for a little while now, and although we occasionally try other mexican restaurants in this area, nothing comes close to the quality, taste and service we have come expect at Marta's. We lived in Los Angeles for many years, and got used to excellent Mexican food, and Marta's could easily stand up to them. Their Carne Asada and Pollo Mole especially is mouthwatering. Best Mole I've had in Whatcom county! I ordered the enchilada trio so I knew what to have next time, and there will be many "next times" to come! The mole was my favorite but I also loved the green sauce (suizas) and the red sauce was delicious!! My husband kept coming to my plate for bites, but he loved his shredded beef burrito and Chile Rellenos as well. My kids were happy with their "kids plates" and couldn't finish the whole portion! They are in that borderline age where kids plates aren't always enough but adult plates are too big, so we were glad to see the portions were generous. BEST Mexican in Lynden, no doubt! Just moved up here from Southern California (where there's plenty of Mexican restaurants to choose from), and this is definitely the best in this little town. Lunch specials are great values for what you get. I had the Taco Loco, huge chicken taco with rice and beans. My daughter had the Huevos Rancheros, which was out of this world! Also indulged in dessert..pretty good fried ICE cream! See the pic! I want to thank Joel our waiter for taking it upon himself to add a 22% gratuity to my check. I was not aware that when I decided to treat me and my family for a meal I was going to have to also purchase a meal for my waiter. So regardless if the food or drinks were good I will not be returning or giving a good review. I am tired of people assuming just because I decide to go out to eat I have the money and or desire to tip the amount of the hourly rate or the cost of a meal of the establishment I am a patron at. So go at your own risk is all the advise I can give. read more

Just had lunch, served by Sugey, and can't begin to tell you how sweet she was and how great the food and drink were. Very clean! Always tell if a restaurant is. Lean by the bathrooms- spotless, therefore the kitchen is spotless. Service, food and drinks were outstanding! We were back tonight after a year of the pandemic. Martas was always good but tonight it was exceptional. We were happy and surprised to see the new booths and expanded space but we were especially surprised that our meals were even better than before. I had the Camarones Diabla and my husband had the chicken fajitas. Delicious. And the service was equally good. It always helps that Marta is there. She is such a delightful, welcoming person. I am actually torn between 2 & 3 stars so I always try to err on the side of caution and go with the higher number because it just could have been an off night. I LOVE Mexican food...LOVE IT but Marta's really fell short of the mark for even good Mexican food. I had high expectations after being greeted to warmly by my server but it kinda went downhill from there. I ordered a shredded beef chimichanga with rice & beans, guac, sour cream & jalapeños. I wasn't offered pickled or fried jalapeños as I have at other places so I was hopeful of getting something good. The chips came with salsa & pico. The salsa was OK, a little heavy on the lime juice and not spicy at all for me but OK for heat lightweights. The pico was not real pretty to look at but good and not soggy at all. I liked that it wasn't a huge basket of chips since I was dining alone. The beer was Modelo Negra on draft and it was cold so I was happy with that. The two servers were doubling at bartenders and that made for a wait for tables that ordered Margaritas & such. They were making the margaritas fresh and that looked good but they may want to get a bartender to keep folks from waiting so long for drinks. Out comes my plate...it looked good but something was off with the Chimi. It was really thin and barely crisp. I was three bites in before I even found any shredded beef. Very disappointed with the entree. The beef was not seasoned well--not what I am used to for a Mexican eatery. I asked for Cholula which never arrived. Remember the side of jalapeños I ordered? Well I found about a tablespoon of sad diced ones hiding near the small portion of guac. Overall, for the prices I don't think they are in line with the portions & flavor. I typically don't write reviews, but I felt inclined to after eating here. The food was not terrible, but it was pretty average, bordering below average. The biggest issues with this place are: the atmosphere is incredible awkward, very slow service (we were literally the only table in the whole place, and had to ask for a refill after the waitress passed my empty glass twice), and the staff. The staff is nice, but the service was slow. When we came in, everyone was hanging out in the restaurant and awkwardly looked at us as we came in. Someone working there, I'm assuming owner or manager was busy making phone calls very loudly at the table directly behind us. Focus on making your food better, and tell your staff to be more courteous to customers. I don't think I'll be back to spend my money here. read more
