Food was good, but the service was probably the worst I've ever had that I can remember. So much so that it deserves the one star. We were completely ignored most of the time. No responses to thank you as if we didn't say anything. Right when we entered we were asked how many in the table then walked away like no one was there. The good part is convenient location, lots of parking, and relatively inexpensive. The bad part is the service and quality of food. The staff is friendly, but I'd rather have better service and quality. The food came out cold and before our drinks. Turned out he never put the drink order in. The tortillas came out after I asked for them a third time, and I had finished my food. The place isn't that busy. We've been twice now, so this time I'll review it. This time around we got the Carne Asada plate, the Carne Asada burritor, and Shrimp Enchilada. The Shrimp Enchilada is seriously good - if you want something truly unusual stuffed full of baby shrimp this one is for you. Delicious sauce, a very enjoyable dish. The Carne Asada burrito is simply delicious. With the green sauce on top, combined with something "sour cabbage" inside, it was simply delicious. The Carne Asada plate was great, delicious flavor, cooked nice, and a very plentiful dish. Both occasions have been great experiences, we look forward to coming back more often to this location. read more

Marta's is 0 for 2 with me. We recently moved in across the street, so I really wanted it to be good. Today I was left waiting at the restaurant for an extra 30 minutes after my to go order was supposed to be ready. The only reason I am not still sitting there now is they I overheard the employee trying to give away my food to someone else. Judging by how cold and soggy everything was, I can only assume it was sitting there for quite some time. Even after the employee assured me everything was in the bag, I found that 2 out of my 3 items in my combination plate were missing. The kids "tacos" probably don't even qualify as tacos anymore since they were just a random collection of ingredients and soggy chips. For two adults and two kids, it cost over $60 and we didn't even get half the stuff we ordered. I will never be back. If you're craving Mexican food, go to one of the taco trucks or even Taco Time is better than this trash read more

This place is great. In case you are indecisive about the enchiladas, there's the trio, which has a sampler of each. My favorite is the enchilada mole version. Friendly service and great prices. I would drive from bellingham just to eat lunch here as well. read more

Good, Tasty, Healthy food, nice staff. Good seats. Nice decor. To quote from them: "We are an environmentally friendly, health-conscious kitchen, offering our guests food free of MSG, lard and other chemicals. Our fruits and veggies are bought locally, and all menu items are prepared fresh to order. Our To-Go boxes are recyclable and made of recycled materials." And I will add that I had no digestive problems with their chicken mole enchiladas, beans etc... Notable, rare for me not to be at least a little unhappy after most Mexican food. Being pretty tired I went for a virgin margarita, very tasty (NOT a nasty mix). Next time with Tequila. One note: Monday-Thursday they close at 8PM (when we went on Monday most of Lynden was closed tight at 7:30). She had to turn some folks away (as we were finishing) because the kitchen was shut down and explained to us that she used to be open later all week but it rarely worked well. Looking for something besides burgers or fast food to eat in Lynden before attending the Draft Horse Spectacular at the fairgrounds, we decided to take our chances and drive through town. We spotted Marta's on Front St. and it looked clean and inviting. We were warmly greeted as soon as we walked in the door. Complimentary chips and exceedingly fresh & tasty salsas came with the menus. The menu is familiar Mexican fare - combo plates, burritos, enchiladas, flautas, etc but also had some interesting variations. One of us tried the enchiladas de mole: Three enchiladas stuffed with chunks of chicken breast smothered in mole sauce and topped with cheese and sour cream. And one of us had the enchiladas trio: One chicken mole enchilada, one cheese enchilada with red sauce & one shredded beef enchilada with tomatillo sauce. The food was delicious! Ingredients tasted fresh, beans & rice were flavorful. The mole was mild but pleasingly smokey. The tomatillo sauce was tangy, very good. Portions were perfectly sized, we left feeling satisfied, but not overstuffed. Prices are reasonable, and the staff are attentive and friendly. To top it off, they're open Sundays which is rare for Lynden. We will definitely be back. read more

Really good Mexican food. Staff is very friendly. Small dining room is cozy and open, and doesn't feel claustrophobic. Nicely decorated. Food was delicious and served quickly. It came to the table nice and hot. Ingredients seemed fresh in all 5 plates we ordered. Salsa was OK, not bad, but our family would prefer something with a better texture. It was full of chunky onions, and kids don't prefer that, and it was watery at the same time. Probably fairly authentic, but I'm not Mexican. I was pleasantly surprised by the food here. My husband and I are from Los Angeles and didn't have the highest expectations from a Mexican restaurant 2 miles south of the Canadian Border. We were wrong. The service was great, the food was very good, and the margaritas hit the spot! I got a Taco Salad. It wasn't very big but it filled me up. My husband got the Carne Asada Burrito, which I tried and it was great. The Carne Asada meat had very good flavor, was tender and juicy, and didn't have any fatty pieces in it. Table was not cleaned, service was slow, chips were stale, food was awful. Bears could not even finish their meals. Weird dirty rainbow knit covers on the hot sauce made Mr. Bear afraid to hold hot sauce over his plate. The mole looked and tasted like bland cat food. The chicken was so cheap Mrs. Bear was afraid to eat it. The margaritas were decent, but that was the only thing that was. We will never be back. read more

We love there food and have been looking forward to the cantina opening. We really need it here in lynden. So we tried the bar side last night and we're dissapointed! Bartender used hands to fill glass with ice and the glass had a big chip in it! There were also children behind the bar? Odd experience! I decided that it was going to be to hot to go to the Lynden Fair and watch the Demolition Derby so I went across the street to the plaza and looked for a cool place. I spotted Marta's and was an instant fan of the air conditioning. Then I became a fan of her beer selection. Then I thought I would try her food and I was a fan of that as well. I'm so happy to have found Martas Cocina! The food is excellent, particularly due to its freshness. My partners steak was tender and my love for their refried beans and homemade tortillas is unmeasured. The margaritas are strong, which is wonderful due to our ability to walk home from the restaurant. Amazing find in Lynden - went here for dinner last night. Made it for happy hour: basic (tasty) margaritas were $3.99. Our table had the three enchilada dinner (enough for two meals), chicken fajitas (also large portion) and the lighter menu spinach, corn and mushroom enchilada. All were delicious and authentic. While there was a good turnover for a Weds. night we never felt rushed to eat or leave and our server was just attentive enough. We will make this a stop next time we head up north. Marta and her family are amazing. So kind and outgoing. The food is consistent, super delicious, and served remarkably fast. There is nothing on the menu that isn't delicious - try everything at least once. These are good people whom run a good establishment that serves good food. Can't ask for better than that. read more

Excellent, authentic Mexican food. For a late lunch I had the appetizer chicken fajita and my husband had chicken mole enchilada. My fajita was wonderful- chicken cubes nicely cooked and nice blend of cheeses, sour creem and avocado. It was more than I could eat in one sitting. My husband's mole enchilada was good but a bit bland. He would have liked more spice. Overall a good lunch. read more

Generally I'm not easily impressed with Mexican restaurants in a strip mall. I rarely, rarely go. You know, the ones that you mainly go to for the margaritas and chips, and they have menus featuring like 30 or more menu items? The places where your entree comes out looking like a puddle? Drowned in cheese? Those places serve ho-hum food. However, we're new in town and went outside our comfort zone. We were pleasantly surprised and impressed with the quality of our entrees at Marta's. I couldn't believe my tamale. It was great. It was really wide, nice sweet masa, with tender, shredded, well-seasoned beef inside. The meat was not dry at all! Not bland, either. I was sad there's no carnitas pork option on the menu but I quickly got over it. At least I found their tamale! My chicken chimi was likewise fresh. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his tacos al carbon. They were topped with large, fresh, beautiful green avocado slices. Wow, keep it up! My husband and I were in town for a show (Evil Dead: The Musical) at the fairgrounds, so we stopped here for drinks and dessert first. Why a Mexican restaurant for that sort of thing, you ask? Because it appears there is nowhere else in the town of Lynden that serves alcohol. I wish I were serious, and maybe some do, but it just wasn't apparent. Way weird. Anyway, we saw a margarita sign in the window here and went for it. Great service, somewhat inconsistent (but good) drinks, and yummy churros. read more
