I cannot recommend Jo at Martian Arts Tattoo enough! I first came in for a Friday the 13th flash piece another artist at the shop designed and she executed, and I loved it so much that I reached out afterward about a more personal idea--matching tattoos for me and my partner's two-year sobriety anniversary. We wanted something subtle and plant-themed that represented our sobriety date in an abstract, unique way. Jo totally understood the assignment. I was drawn to her plant tattoo style from the beginning, and she came up with a design that was absolutely perfect. Even when we had to reschedule a couple of times due to life stuff, Jo was kind, flexible, and easy to communicate with. When the day finally came, she tattooed both of us back-to-back--it was a long day for her, but so special for us. The final tattoos are beautiful, meaningful, and exactly what we hoped for. The tattoo artist my sister went to is named Arthur he was honestly very rude. She would tell him exactly what she wants and then he would basically say no and how he doesn't want to do it that way and how he wants to do it his way only. He also told her something along the lines of you are not someone who would look good with a tattoo. Idk if he was having a bad day or what but his customer service was not it. i got my first tattoo done here and was lied to about the pain level of the placement and shading along with that my artist (Arthur) was very passive aggressive the entire time. we took no breaks and he failed to offer or provide any type of stress ball. after the tattoo was finished he decided to say" i don't normally tell people this but ur not a tattoo person" in a rude tone . overall he had horrible customer service and bedside manners . this experience made me regret getting my first ever tattoo done by him . his coworker sierra was amazing and so nice , she was the one who gave me a stress ball after seeing me struggle with the pain. the shop had very nice workers aside from him. read more

I am not that experienced in purchasing a tattoo ( I got one for the first time on 11/11) but I stalked the shop for a while and asked around and heard good things about the vibe at the shop and all of the artists. The shop is clean, smells clean and has a great vibe. There is lots of artist completed work on the walls and books of flash art. Fun to look at if you don't have something already pre chosen. They keep things very tidy and sanitary and while we were there, they had a lot of repeat customers in. I have been getting tattooed at Martian Arts for several years and just today realized I should leave them a review. I mostly get work done by Joanne because, quite frankly, she is the best tattooist in town. Her touch is so soft and delicate. She is very meticulous, does amazing linework, and she isn't afraid to use bright vibrant colors. When people see my tattoos, they quite often comment that they didn't realize tattoos could be so colorful! We are currently in the middle of tattooing my knees. I'm finding this area particularly uncomfortable. With another artist, I'm not sure I could sit through it, but because Joanne is so delicate and kind (and quick!), we are getting there. My last two sessions at the shop were after the pandemic hit. They have done great work sectioning off the different tattoo areas and the place is pretty much spotless. Honestly, I was a little leery getting tattooed in the middle of a pandemic, but after seeing how clean the shop is (and seeing other artists cleaning and disinfecting their areas after a client leaves), I am totally comfortable. I am new to the Portland area, and have been on a search for my new artist. I wanted to get started on my Doctor Who tribute, and was immediately drawn to Martian Arts, due to them having a "tarids" for their front door. I reached out with my idea and the owner jerry responded, excited due to be a Doctor Who fan since the 70's! Many people had epic tattoos so much so that I asked several of them where they had had their ink done. The vast majority said at Martian Arts Tattoo Studio and said it with great enthusiasm. They gushed about how great the artists and the studio are. At the time, I was contemplating getting my first tattoo, as I was recently retired after decades of working in conservative professions. Suddenly, I find myself right in front of the tattoo studio and just HAD to go in and inquire. What I found was the most clean, most professional, most kind tattoo shop imaginable with happy artists and happier clients! The place has the Old Portland super-hip, super-kind, super-groovy vibe. I looked at the artists portfolio books and was completely blown away. Joanne, one of the two owners, greeted me and truly listened to my wants and concerns with respect to my first tattoo. A few years later and here I am with ten (10) epically-placed, beautifully-colored images ALL done by two (2) artist from THIS shop! Amanda Pea did eight (8) of my images. Working with her was a top-shelf experience! Not gonna lie: Okay, sigh, I had kind of a crush on her, a truly rad and very gifted artist, who I requested each time I came in for a new image. She eventually left for another shop. Bummed as I was about that, I decided it was time to have two (2) images done by The Maestro himself, Jerry Martian! Dude, Jerry gave me wonderfully-artistic, bomb-ass images that blew me away! Those of you who watched the show L.A. Ink featuring Kat von D a few years ago on TV remember artist Corey Miller renowned in the ink world. After Jerry did my last two (2) images, I felt that I'd had work done by an artist equal to or perhaps better than Corey Miller! My Jerry Martian images are a badge of honor in the ink world of which I could not be more proud! I got my favorite singer to sign my arm when I met her at her show Friday night (Lizzo, if you didn't know, now you know) with the intention of having it tattooed forever. The trouble was finding a shop that had last minute availability - most other places were reservation only, and it was tough to find a place that would make it permanent before it faded completely. From the first phone call with Jerry, I knew this place would be the one to help me out. Adam was my artist and worked with me to get it exactly how I wanted it. He did an excellent job, and he was fun to talk to. I had him clean up the writing since it was signed quickly with sharpie, and the drawing Adam did was based off of what was left on my arm... much of it had been smudged while sleeping. I'm thrilled with the results. The vibe of the shop was very laid back and the music happened to be excellent while I was getting tattooed. I would be happy to come back for more work in the future! Personality: both clay and the other tattoo artist were incredibly friendly. Clay (@clayharpole on ig) is a gentleman tattooist. Light handed and incredibly detail oriented. I put him through the ringer with redesign after redesign. He gave me feedback. And listened. And was incredibly patient throughout the entire process. I'm relatively new to tattoos (three) and his attitude helped me feel really comfortable. When we were done he gave me the clearest instructions for aftercare and when he learned I was flying hooked me up with a special patch for the art. Art: second to none. Clay's artwork was amazing. I absolutely love the work he did on my leg and will Be flying back out to have more work done by him. Add to that how quick he did it (less than an hour) and you have the mix for a one of a kind artist. I've had other artists tattoo on me and he absolutely beats them all. I was in town for a show and we booked an airbnb just a couple blocks away from this place. We were bored and decided to look up tattoo spots to get spontaneous tats. This one and 1 more came up since they are so close to each other. I clicked on this one and saw the amazing reviews about how nice and affordable this place is and the Owner, Jerry especially. We walk in with some ideas and Jerry greets us and says no problem. We wait a bit for a chair to open up and Jerry works on me, while my friend gets hers starts about 10 minutes later.
