I have been going to Lisa for about a year and a half. Lisa's tattoos have consistently been bright, bold and beautiful. I have complete trust in her tattooing. All of my tattoos are from Lisa except for one that I got from Brad who also works at Historic. I initially began going to Lisa for a cover up of Hebrew script I had gotten on my 18th birthday. Now I have a beautiful peony that covers the entire thing. I've seen Lisa and other tattooers at Historic perform some crazy cover ups. I got a tattoo from Tony and it is my favorite! He was very kind and did an excellent job! I am so happy to have this piece of art to carry with me forever! During my consultation I presented him with an idea and he created a beautiful piece of art in his style (which I love) with a few cool suggestions I wouldn't have thought of (like the panthers being slightly different from each other). Was tattooed by Tyson, was not a great experience. I could feel a different kind of pain when being tattooed later turns out he clearly went too deep as my scarring is obvious. As I was being tattooed another artist came up & was what I thought joking w/ Tyson about his crazy night the day before & asking if he was okay (like hungover or not seemed to be the question) & Tyson replied he was really struggling. I thought they were kidding, seems not w/ how fast he rushed through my tattoo even making a mistake & over lapping one of the wings. I was so surprised given his experience and portfolio. I had been following him for months & took the time & finances to drive to Oregon to be tattooed & left very disappointed. My tattoo artist recently moved and I really enjoy the new digs. Walls are PLASTERED with flash and I love looking at it and maybe even picking off if it. Has a chill feel and the building is cool. I don't love that the main area is so open...I wish there was a little bit more cover. It's especially noticeable because they have a fair amount of walk in business....but it's not anything I wouldn't come in over. The "get what you get" gimmick is pretty sweet. I would rather give my artist $100 and have them pick something in the style and type that fits me but, hey, some people really want to be surprised and I have yet to see one on their IG that wasn't worth it. All done, it's a cool place! Truth tho....I don't care where it is as long as it's my artist (which is how I suspect most people are). I LOVE this place. I went in the beginning of the week to talk to Brad Delay about getting a butterfly tattoo for my grandma. He gave me his card, quickly set up my appointment and I was out! Just an update on my last review seeing as I've had two more tattoos done by Joel in the last two years. His skills are absolutely top and I'm so happy with how clean they always look. The most recent was a realistic Enso circle made to look like it was done by paint brush. It was done with black and grey and was easy to get a touch up on one of the spots for optimal effect. Worst attempted tattooing experience ever!!! I've got a ton of tattoos throughout the country and this place is the most unprofessional shop I've ever been to. The level of BS passive aggressiveness is so thick here you can cut through it with a dual knife. I'm telling everyone right now unless you're willing to do the type of work that they enjoy and is in a style that them deem worthy forget about this place. Whatever happened to professionalism and customer service??? These guys canceled my last appointment with only 1 hour notice before my appointment because a "back injury" and was told the artist would get back with me to reschedule. Well almost 2 weeks went by and nothing, I should've taken all this as a bad sign, but this guy did work for me years ago and I wanted him to do more. Well fast forward 2 almost 3 weeks and today I'm supposed to show up for my consult. I'm from out of town so I got lost and now I'm late. This guy sends me a nasty text message and writes me off canceling my appointment and tells me he doesn't have time for me if I can't make it on time and to find someone else to do my tattoos!!! So Yelp folks take it from me this shop sucks and the nameless "artist" here needs a lesson in manners and customer service. What a great tattoo shop! My friend was in town for a visit and we decided we needed (wanted) to get a new tat. We had originally called The New Rose tattoo shop, but when we got to the shop the artist didn't have enough time to do both of ours. She was super nice and honest about it and suggested we try Historic Tattoo. Well we are so happy we did because we got to meet the fabulous Mckenna who gave us our fern tattoos. Mckenna was so chill, funny, and did a wonderful job on our pieces. My buddy fell asleep during her session, and I was super relaxed and could have fallen asleep. She is a goddess with the gun (tattoo gun) we are healing beautifully. The shop is spotless, nice and roomy, great music. It looks like they specialize in American Traditional style. Four words "Get what you get". As a way to celebrate a birthday, and because it sounded fun, six of us ventured in on a Saturday to do the "get what you get" tattoo thing. I've never written a bad review in my life, but I had a really poor experience when I came to this shop. It was my first tattoo and I wanted a name (6 letters) in small simple script on my ribs. I brought in a few pictures of handwritten fonts. One of the artists glanced at my fonts and then sketched it out. It was absolutely nothing like the font I brought in. I asked if it could be tweaked a little bit and he rolled his eyes..."I don't know how I can make this anymore like the font you brought in" and another artist said what you're requesting is "a lot of work" Really?? It was pretty obvious they didn't want to do my tattoo. I went to a different shop down the street. The artists were pleasant, accommodating and friendly (typical attributes of a company that wants your business) They took the font I brought in...printed it out, traced it and did the tattoo...that whole "lot of work" took under 3 minutes. read more

While visiting Portland my friends and I decided to commemorate the trip with new tattoos, each of us already had tattoos so not something new for us. I liked that they were able to take 3 walk-ins with very little wait time. They also had an extensive selection of flash tattoos (however if you like a more delicate or feminine tattoo the options are limited). I thought they all did a fine job with the tattoo, I also liked that they have varied payment methods (such as Venmo). Two things that gave me pause were the prices (higher than I'd ever paid) but especially the atmosphere in the shop. All the artists were talking to each other while they worked on us (rather than talk to us, their customers) and some of the conversation made me feel gross (basically a b-word girl they all hate, ugh). read more

I could not make my original appointment, and when I called to cancel they were totally cool. I got an appointment with John the next day and did it up. Solid artist with no snooty attitude. I've never gotten a tattoo in my life. I've lived in Portland for 13 years and plan on returning to the East Coast when I retire next year and I wanted a memento of Portland life. I'm clearly not your average hipster but I researched tattoo artists and found myself at Historic Tattoo less than a mile from my house. Talked to one of the artists who recommended LisaMarie. 2 weeks later,I finally stopped in and showed her what I wanted. She was lovely, confident and I was good with her fee. I had a lot of nervousness but it's done! My Cat in the Hat with "READ" down the side is so me. It's vivid, gorgeous and I'm thrilled. Pain level was low and results couldn't be any better. Thankful for the care, attention and high level of customer service all tattooers have here. They are one of the few shops in Portland that welcome walkins and deliver at a high level of service. I was recommended by a friend to go to this shop. And I Def wasn't dissapointed. First impressions was that the shop was big and decorated like a tattoo shop should be. I met all 4 of the artists and they were all very friendly and had great additudes. I've been in plenty of places where it feels cold and the artists are snobby and uninterested. Both the artists and owner were accommodating with offerings of water, a better pillow, and even turned on the fans for me because i was so hot in there. Brad was my artist and I'm thrilled I found him. He made sure that my tattoo was right and that I was happy with it. And I was impressed when he got a 2nd opinion of his fellow artist to ensure the straightness of my tattoo. These good looking group of guys are five stars in my book. From the cleanliness of the shop, to the laid back friendliness of the boys, and the level of skill from my artist. I went ahead and booked another appt the day I got my first tattoo by Brad. From the moment I walked into Historic, I felt comfortable, which is a first for me. We were greeted almost immediately by Bradley, he was very friendly and took the time to address our questions and concerns. This being my first tattoo, I had more than a few questions, he fielded them with ease and a welcome lack of attitude I've experienced in other shops. I had no qualms about having Bradley do my tattoo. Bradley was very professional, thorough and surprisingly fast. My line work had to be pretty heavy but he did it without the heavy hand I had expected. The line work is so clean, my expectations were exceeded by a mile! Wow - first time getting a tattoo, I made an appointment and was able to send the artist my tattoo drawing. He did a great job rendering my botanical print to a tattoo. Brad Delay was my artist, he was very good at telling me what was going to happen and made a somewhat nervous situation for me more calming. He was open to letting me have a support person (my nephew) there and we all had a good time.
