I am so incredibly thankful right now. We purchased a home in Northridge about a year and a half ago. We love it but it has been such a money pit. Just one expensive thing after the next. We're finally recovering financially from a laundry list of major repairs to this house. It's going back up to nearly 100 degrees this week right before we're about to have extended guests... and our AC unit dies. So I got on yelp and put out a call to a couple of big companies (I won't name) purely because of financing options they offered. I got a call back from one who said they didn't have time today. The heater and the A/C no longer blew air. We could hear the heater "trying" to come on, but the blower never would. I called Martin A/C, they promptly returned my call. Martin and his associate arrived on time and went straight to work (wearing little shoe slip-ons since it was raining outside). After troubleshooting the unit, it turned out to be a bad blower unit capacitor. They could have told me the unit needed replacement but they were honest. Well, sorry to rain on the Martin A/C parade here but my experience was less than stellar - overcharged for the work done. Pros: 1. Came quickly after I called 2. Was courteous, diagnosed the problem quickly 3. Got it done quickly, we were without A/C for only less than half a day total Cons: Turns out the problem was a large 'Run Capacitor' on the outside unit had died. I was told $275 to replace it along with an A/C check. This seemed pretty high to me, but we were boiling, so I said OK. Then, while they were here working, I searched on "run capacitor' and learned about the price range that is usual for this service. First of all, the part - even a big one - will run $35 max. Generally they are in the $15-25 range. So, what's a fair price? Well, many others on discussion boards about this feel the $119 MAX for a service call + parts cost = $155 absolute maximum for this service. Others had had it done for $110 total, others had paid $200-250 then realized they'd been a bit ripped after researching the problem. I have a feeling that they saw I was in a fairly nice neighborhood - saw the nice cars in my garage that I worked my ass off for, and thought, "hey, we can charge this guy $275." After all, if someone lives in a nicer house or has nice cars, it must mean they can pay whatever number we throw out there - not that they worked their butts off for these things and know what fair and unfair pricing is. When I confronted them with a printout showing the part was $20, he stammered a bit and couldn't really give a good reason why they were charging $275 for less than 40 min. of work and a $20 part. He told me he'd do me a favor and drop the price to $250. So, in short, my A/C works again, I am out $250, and Martin A/C got my business one time. They will never get it again. read more

I know it's 100+ degrees, and he did come the same day. Very professional and the problem WAS fixed. BUT. $275 to replace a $30 capacitor in ten minutes is excessive, in my opinion, I don't care what the circumstances are. So -- Ask questions first. How much of the charge is the part? Can I see the old part you removed? Etc. Be a wise shopper and you'll probably make out better than I did on the cost of this repair. read more

My AC was freezing over and pumping out only moderately-cooled air during the hottest weeks of 2012. After trying unsuccessfully to adjust around it with ceiling fans and opening windows at night, I called Martin A/C. Their representative showed up on-time with one assistant, and immediately got to work. Within minutes, he identified the problem: not enough charge in the main AC unit. He adjusted it, then checked the flow and temperature of air in the house. Almost immediately, it began to start cooling down. I'm now looking at a thermostat at 76 which for the past two weeks was consistently above 89. Don't know why I waited so long. He told me my unit was very solid, and that we should be able to go for many more years without the need for any expensive repairs. He was prompt and careful and thorough. He didn't automatically try to sell me a big job or new parts. He fixed it and gave us a 90 day warrantee. I called Martin at 8:30 a.m. On a hot day in the San Fernando Valley with no AC by the time 3:00 rolls around, we would be sweltering. Martin made an appointment for 12:30 and actually showed up a few minutes early. He came in. Was polite and very professional. He fixed the A/C in less than half an hour...and this is very important to me...did NOT try to upsell me any more parts or service. As a matter of fact, he quoted me a price, then after he replaced the bad part (a capacitor) he saw the filter was dirty and replaced it at no extra charge.
