Did I know what I was getting into when I stopped for lunch in Craryville? No. Sometimes you're on a road trip and you need to stop to eat. Often, these meals are nothing special - just fuel for the trip. But sometimes you get lucky. We stopped because we were hungry and because the map said there was a place to eat just off the Taconic. Right off the exit we were greeted by an old-school stainless steel diner that looked well-maintained and inviting. At this point, my expectations for the stop had already been exceeded. Inside, we learned that this was an old Silk City Diner from 1958, and the decor reflected this history. We took a comfortable booth by a window. Service was friendly. One of the day's specials was fried scallops. Now, many people might think an old roadside diner that's 100 miles from the ocean might not be a good place to order seafood, but I had a feeling I was making a good choice. I didn't even ask the waitress how the scallops were - I just ordered. The scallops were perfectly cooked, enjoyable to eat, and exceeded my expectations. They came with fries, gravy, and broccoli, which were all fine (but nothing special). It wasn't all perfect. The coffee was weak, and it didn't seem like all the food met the level of the scallops. But for a random rest stop it was fantastic. Will I be planning a trip to Craryville just to go to the Martindale Chief Diner? Probably not. But would I stop in if I was traveling through this area again? Absolutely. read more

True to my earlier review, I'm back after 10 years. This time, we were here for breakfast before a long day of autumnal activities in Columbia county. Well, breakfast was on point! I had pancakes (with real maple syrup), over easy eggs, and sausage. The pancakes were light and fluffy, the eggs were very yolky, and they gave me more than enough syrup. Companion had a Florentine omelette, home fries and toast. The home fries are thin slices of potato rather than cubes, and I have to say, this must be the superior way to make home fries. So much flat surface area to cook! The omelette was solid as well, and it all came out shockingly fast. An ideal start to a fall day. read more

Love almost everything about this place except the dated, problematic name and sign! This is an authentic chrome diner manufactured in the late 50s and lovingly maintained. You can see they've kept it in great shape, replacing the vinyl seats but staying true to its character. It even has formica tables and a sign that points you to the 'telephone booth'! The menu is extensive. Everything tasted good to me. My fish and chips was highlighted on the menu in its own box so of course i ordered it and it was great! Stopped by on the way back to the city to grab lunch. This diner was busy and they sat us at the bar initially but we requested for a table which took some time to get seated even after it was cleaned. The service here isn't that great and it takes a long time for the servers to come and take the order, and takes a while to get the food as well. I got the breakfast burrito and replaced the home fries for french fries for an up charge. Also got a cup of coffee which was average. The food was good but not great to come back again. It's a logical alternative midway between the snooty upscale places (with upscale prices) that attract sophisticates to Hudson, and it has a full traditional menu, unlike fast food places. The diner was built in 1958 and frankly, the prices seem more like 1985 than 2025: Most basic meals cost maybe five to ten dollars less than they would in similar venues in the New York or New Jersey suburbs. They say their fish meals are beloved, and I don't doubt it, but if you're like my wife and her sister, you'll stick with basic stuff like turkey wraps and chef salads. Haven't been this way in a while, so on our way to Lake George we stopped in to get a bite to eat. Good to see it has not change at all. Still has the 50's (1958 to be exact) look, menu has not change much. The phone booth is still there but used as a storage. Back in my good graces. Our utensils were clean this year. Woo Hoo !!! Stopped in on Sunday just before noon. They were busy, but we got a table for four almost immediately. Thank goodness we arrived when we did, because five minutes later every table was full and there was a line out the door. They were short staffed, only two waitresses for the whole diner. Our waitress was a little scattershot, as she said she'd be right back with coffee, then disappeared with food for another table, forgetting to bring us our coffee. First of all, the biscuits and gravy was a flavorless pile of vomit-texture. And Jade, the server, couldn't have been more of a disaster. Wrong toast for everyone--ignored complaints, kept insisting we decide if we are paying cash or card in this completely confusing way without smiling or even a hint of professional politeness. Wife and In Laws Love the Fish & Chips here under the Chef Special. I liked the Beef Burrito. We were all surprised to find such great food at this clean diner out in the middle of farm country off the Taconic Parkway. The service was decent especially since there was only one waitress and her Spanish speaking helper at n the whole place including cashier. The food was classic diner delish and I would recommend the Chicken Fried Steak and Garlic Mashed Potatoes. One of the best chocolate milk shakes ever!!! Came to Martindale Chief Diner as a pit on stop on me and my families way to Boston. They were visually understaffed and it took a while to get our menus. Vast variety of food on the menu from sea food to Mexican. I ordered a BLT with a side of Coleslaw. I also got a vanilla milkshake. When the food arrived it came with a pickle and small bite sized piece of watermelon that did not impress. Only one party ahead of us and they said we can sit at the counter if we wanted to be seated immediately, so we took the option. 50 mins later, after telling us "it's coming soon" we were told our order ticket was still third in line. We got up, threw down some $ for the coffee and left. Ladies seem to be rushing around but the big guy behind the counter just seem to be in the way not doing much.
