Stopped here on the way to Vermont and we were pleasantly surprised. There aren't many restaurant choices off the Taconic so finding this gem is a game changer. As a gluten free girlie they have a dedicated fryer so you can have a fried chicken basket and fries, which is what I got. They are known for their gourmet tinned fish which is niche,but fun. We picked one out on the self then ordered some accoutrements to go with it. I went back a week later with a friend and ordered the chicken again. A must stop if you're heading North. read more

The food was not good. The fish and chips basket consisted of a very heavily fried fish, to the point that it completely overwhelmed the taste of the fish. If you split the breading open and exposed the fish inside( easy to do by cutting the heavy breading in half), the fish inside was ok.The French fries tasted out of a frozen package ( not freshly cooked) and was so heavily salted as to be inedible. As to a broiled fish sandwich, the distracted waitress got the order wrong and said not to bother her and to get to the back of the line to get her to correct her mistake. Stopped here along a drive after reading good reviews. It is very cute inside and has an extensive but pricey tinned fish collection. Ordered and then as time went by we realized 45 min had passed without receiving our food. It seems the kitchen was having a bad day as they were busy but didn't seem at capacity so despite that once our food arrived it was hot and very tasty. Our Hudson Valley dining adventure began last evening (9-30-25) with dinner at Zinnia's Dinette (1843 NY 23) in Craryville, NY. Our son and daughter-in-law made the recommendation and joined us for a tasty and fun evening.  My one-sentence review "An eclectic, but tight, seafood forward menu (almost all the fried food is gluten-free and prepared in a dedicated fryer) featuring delicious food, at reasonable prices in this highly competitive dining market, with friendly and engaging staff (thank you Wendy)." Opened just in 2021, as Wendy explained, Zinnia's Dinette features fresh seafood in a variety of creative presentations and they carry and service perhaps the most extensive array of tinned seafood I've ever seen (photos at the end of my review).  You can select a tin (or tins) for your meal (or purchase some to take home).  The selection is almost overwhelming, but very appetizing.  With the exception of the fried fish, all the other fried seafood is made gluten-free.  They serve a variety of unique beverages as well as beer, cider, and wine (much of it made in the Hudson Valley). We arrived at about 7:15 p, took some menus, sat down at a booth, figured out what we wanted (naturally we ended up over-ordering) then my son and I got up to place and pay for the order.  We brought everyone's drinks back to the table and then made our way to the end of the store to check out the amazing selection of tinned fish--clams, oysters, little necks, octopus, sardines, mackerel, anchovies, salmon, trout, eel, barnacles, razor clams, mussels, and so forth.  As I mentioned above, I've never seen such a selection.  We resisted the temptation to load up a bag (my son confiding that he had just that a few months ago when they last dined there). lol Our food started to arrive rather quickly.  To start we ordered the fried smelts with a black garlic aioli sauce, the Rhode Island-style calamari with hot peppers and a light vinaigrette (along with a garlic butter dipping sauce), the mixed fried mushrooms with a cowgirl ranch dipping sauce, and blistered Shishito peppers (on special last night and advertised as "last of the season").  In "theory" the fried smelts were supposed to be my "main" dish.  But the portions of everything were massive.  If these four appetizers were all we had ordered, we couldn't have finished.  Really tasty food--lightly fried, allowing the flavor of the food to shine, not the coating.  Even though my smelts had been frozen, they were delicious and easily could have been mistaken for fresh.  They were pencil thin, crisp on the outside, moist on the inside.  Everyone enjoyed having some and I enjoyed sampling the other dishes.  I was particularly impressed with the fried mushrooms which included Oyster, Shiitake, and Maitake, all locally sourced.  The calamari was also delicious but could have used more tentacles which is just a personal preference. Everyone's main arrived when we were just half way through the apps, save for the calamari which did get finished.  I wisely ordered the kale and bitter greens salad which was crisp and fresh and arguably the healthiest thing anyone ate last night save for the Kombucha which our daughter-in-law enjoyed as her beverage. lol  Our daughter-in-law ordered the red curry fish cake sandwich (served open faced on top of red beet slaw and very ripe slices of tomato; arguably the second healthiest menu choice of the evening and to her credit, she almost finished it.  Our son ordered the Shrimp PoBoy--a large roll stuffed with extra large, fried Gulf Shrimp, cabbage, pickles, tomatoes, and a black pepper mayo.  It was a massive sandwich and really tasty.  He's enjoyed quite a few PoBoys--of various varieties--over the years in New Orleans and gave this one two thumbs up.  I sampled one of the shrimp and it was delicious--crispy, freh, moist, and succulent.  Wow.  He consumed the first half of the sandwich without issue, but surrendered on the second half to just enjoy the filling and leaving the bread aside. I knew that Zinnia's was going to be a hit with my wife when I saw that they had fried chicken on the menu.  They have buttermilk fried (on-the-bone) chicken pieces in a basket, but she selected the boneless, buttermilk fried chicken thigh sandwich.  Served on a sesame potato bun, the sandwich was dressed with cabbage, pickles, and honey mustard.  The chicken was super crisp, lots of flavor and really tender on the inside--I sampled.  Along with some minor assistance from the other diners, she managed to finish everything but a piece of bun.  I should point out that everyone, save moi, also had French fries--real potatoes which were fried, no coating, nothing previously frozen, just potato bliss and they came "extra crispy" which satisfied my wife's palate. My husband and I ate there Saturday night and the place was rocking. It was nice to see all ages enjoying the place. The food was delicious and thoughtfully prepared. The menu offered lots of tantalizing choices. I had the fried clam strips and my husband the fish and chips. Both were plentiful, not greasy,nicely spiced but not spicey or salty!the staff were sweet and friendly and very attentive. We will definitely keep Zinnias on our regular visit list. read more

Come for the fried fish, leave with some canned fish. Great selection on the tinned fish by the way -- actually better than great. I've never seen this variety and assortment altogether even in specialty shops or the canned seafood motherships of Spain and Portugal. What a delightful find! We came here on recommendation of our Airbnb host and it was a vibrant warm and hippie happy delicious time! Since they seemed to be known for their seafood, I got the shrimp po boy and my husband got the blackened skate sandwich and we both loved our entrees. The batter is super light so even though our dishes and the calamari were fried, I didn't leave dinner feeling overly or uncomfortably full - I felt great. I also got the Salmon chowder special which was more brothy than thick and creamy (a nice differentiation to the typical chowder), and full of fresh dill. It was warming to the soul on a cool spring day like today. House made soft serve was great too. And just as importantly, the service was so friendly - they even provided a box of toys for my 3 yr old to play with (which made dinner much more enjoyable!) love the bright colors, the beautiful plants, and the cozy feel. Although we are not locals, it was great to discover a truly local gem like Zinnia's. Def adding to my list of places to return to the next time we stay in the area. read more

Absolutely terrible. The only saving grace and only reason i could recommend coming here is for the fried chicken which is a 5/5! Everything else i tried was overpriced and not worth the money. First you arrive and wait in line and its cramped and crowded. You order and they have that thing on the screen asking you to tip 15-25%. What for? You end up doing all your own waiter service. I balanced cups of water for 8 people... would have been nice if they had some trays for people to use. I got my own silverware, napkins and condiments. They give you a buzzer thing that goes off and then i brought 5 trays of food out through two sets of doors that don't prop open. I definitely burned off whatever calories i took in!! I tried: Blackened fish sandwich (3/5) only okay Fish cake (2/5) Calamari (1/5) they didnt even have marinara sauce Clam strips (2/5) not worth $20 Fried chicken (5/5). So tasty, thick batter, juicy chicken. I guess that's why they have a picture of a chicken on their sign/logo even though they self-describe as a seafood restaurant! I was confused by that. The food took about 45-50 minutes to be ready as well which was a long time to wait and they even forgot one or two things which the nice woman at the counter caught and corrected, but took maybe 5-10 minutes more for those items to be ready. read more

Everything sounded good. My husband got the fried chicken which was amazing. Our niece got the sardine sandwich which was on a wonderful roll with thin sliced cukes and lettuce and as she described it everything that was supposed to be crunchy was crunchy. I got the scallop roll which was the best. And the tuna corn chowder which was even better. read more

Love love love! Went to Zinnia's on Christmas night and they had a special Caribbean dinner menu. Everything we ordered was incredibly flavorful and delicious - we had the pumpkin ginger soup (very gingery - I loved it), shrimp mofongo, jerk cauliflower, cod fritters, and chips with guacamole (came with a little bit of pineapple and I believe papaya). Portions were filling and everything came out hot and freshly made. The space is bright and open with booth-style seating on one side, bar-type seating across the other, and a few other tables. You order at the counter, but the food is brought to your table. For beverages, they have beer, wine and, non-alcoholic options. Water is self-service near the register. Everyone working was kind and the overall vibe of the place was sort of hipstery, but not pretentious. I can't wait to come back. read more

Zinnia's Dinette is such a cool little place! My wife loves houseplants and Zinnia's was filled with them. We visited there on a Friday night and the place was busy. However, we still got our food in a timely manner. She ordered fish and chips and I got the clams but we shared everything. The clams were the real star for me. The fish was fine, but the clams were superb. I also got the Sesame Sundae, on the recommendation of one of the ladies behind the counter. It was delicious! We didn't try any of the "tinned fish" but several people around us were deciding which to try. If I go back (we were traveling), I think I'd try something from their massive selection of tinned fish. read more

Wow! Tasty! We had dinner when visiting family at Thanksgiving. Needed a change after feast reruns. Zinnia's was just the thing. The fried chicken sandwiches were a hit. The shrimp po' boy was great! Shrimp was cooked perfectly and the sauce was light and flavorful. The fish in the fish and chips was Hake which was deliciously breaded and seasoned. Nice change from the cod we get in Colorado. I enjoyed the clam strips immensely. Not my favorite tartar sauce. A bit too salty. They had no cocktail sauce but the waitress brought me some horseradish, lemon and ketchup. I can't imagine this happening anywhere else I've eaten. That turned out really well if I do say so myself. The strips were fresh and I liked the breading. Steak fries were the side of choice at our table. Well made and not oily. All said it was one of the best restaurant meals we had in the Hudson NY area hands down! read more

Cute place and very nice people who work here. The seating is a little uncomfortable - the decor is like retro chic. The menu is super interesting and has a good amount of fried food options. We ordered the calamari and we liked it a lot - we liked it with the vinegar and hot peppers. We also got the fried chicken basket which was just ok. The chicken was moist but the breading completely came off the chicken. The fish and chips were super wow - the breading had like chips in it. Super delish. We also got a chocolate milkshake and cookie to go. I forgot the type of cookie but it was very good. Overall a fun experience. Definitely a lot a surprises but I would say that it's hard to know what's the good stuff vs what's just ok. read more

Such a hidden gem! WOW! Fantastic seafood soups and Rhode Island Style Calamari. Locally made kombucha on tap (we got the elderberry kombucha), craft beer, wine, local cider, ice cream, delicious seafood - what more could you ask for! The meal definitely felt worth the price. After driving by for a few years, we finally checked it out. Wow! The glowing reviews here are 100% right. And the nay sayers either don't get the concept or expect something more pretentious when the whole point is the lack of pretension where the menu does the talking. The combination of originality, quality, affordability, and lack of any pretentiousness are a winner. Fantastic. Such a creative, friendly place, and such an original concept, in a very unlikely location. We had the fried chicken and fish and chips. Both were decidedly homemade in character, super tasty, and a great value. Both the chicken and the fish appeared to be entirely fresh and never frozen, huge portions, home style breading.... Solid home fries, a truly excellent milkshake (at a frankly ridiculously low price for what you get) to finish. Staff were genuinely nice. The place was hopping and had a great vibe. We didn't drink, but the beer and wine selection was also creative and clearly someone knows wine at this place -- unique stuff you don't see everywhere, again affordably priced. We live half an hour away. And we will be back often and recommend it to our guests. We'd love to see Zinnia's survive and thrive. It has the feel of a true labor of love. Such places are few and far between, certainly at such affordable prices for such high quality food. People near us had skate, smelts, and mussels, and it all looked and smelled delicious and no one was leaving anything on their plates when they were done. I'm deeply curious where they're sourcing seafood from, because the menu and the quality would both be a hit in NYC, and the fish I had was so fresh that it seemed likely someone must be going 3 hours south to Fulton St. Market every day to stock this place. I've rarely had fish that fresh even at fancy places in the city. 100% a winner. Truly a one of a kind place that tries really hard to be really good, fun, original, affordable, and to cater to a range of tastes. And the two of us were out of there for under $60 with tip, with leftovers to take home, and big smiles on our faces. Yay Zinnia! (My only complaint to the owners is this: hey folks please have your dirt parking lot graded. Both entrances have huge potholes, as does much of the lot. I have low car and it was treacherous. Especially in the dark, the lot could use a few lights too. That's only going to get worse in winter months. But it won't stop us from returning. read more

Holy cow. I am so glad we decided to make this our lunch spot today- the menu is crazy, the service is excellent (thank you Betsy!) and the decor is diner-meets-country kitchen. I got the crab dipped grilled cheese - it was a religious experience. That and a side salad with lemon dressing was a great duo. We also got the hush puppies (the honey drizzle was insane), the clam chowder (super fresh) and the blackened fish sandwich. You can't possibly go wrong, whatever you order. LOVE this place! We came here twice on our 3-day ski vacation. The shrimp po' boy was absolutely delicious. So were the fish and chips and the garlicky greens. We went for dinner while winding up a vacation week. There is nice outdoor seating, including a tent, but we went inside. Cool diner booths and counter seating, bright and clean. Great music- James Brown, NOLA funk. You order at the counter, but they served us at our table. Fabulous drinks of strawberry/rhubarb and ginger turmeric We got a plate of garlic scapes - spicy and fantastic! NE clam chowder was great, too: good flavor without the cream sauce. The fish and chips and the chicken basket both had a great light batter and were delicious. A bluefish special had a wonderful yogurt sauce and super fresh vegetables: cukes, radish, more scapes.
