If you're looking for a compassionate, fear free vet to take your loved one to, this is it! My dog is reactive and with that can come some major judgement. I was able to let them know ahead of time and they were kind enough to let me know when the coast was clear to bring him in to get weighed and put into a room. My dog was due for some vaccines and he did have to be muzzled as he was not a fan of restraint (which I was able to do myself). They were unbelievably patient and kind with my boy and took breaks in between vaccines. By the end of the visit he had a loose body and was excited to see the vet tech enter the room. It seriously melted my heart (because we all want to see our pets overcome fears and succeed!). I was so pleased with my experience and highly recommend bringing your pet here as everyone is so kind!! read more

I had to wait for three weeks to get on the calendar. I had scheduled a 1040 in my books. The communication that was not confirmed via email or text because I didn't receive it was for a 9:40 AM. When I called to discuss the confusion a strict charge for the entire exam was billed. Even upon explaining the disappointment and confusion to the supervisor it was a zero flexibility policy. The one message I did receive did not leave a time. I explained this and apologized for the confusion. But apparently it is more important to this company to have every single exam charged. This is poor customer service. I will look elsewhere rather than return to a place with such rigidity. read more

We've been clients of Martinez AnimAl Hospital in Martinez since early 2012. Several cats and dogs. Including my current Labrador. They have always provided the best possible care even during the pandemic! Routine physicals are fine and vaccinations are given. Thoroughly, Professionally, and with great consideration for each animals needs and temperament:) in the last week we attended for my dog's annual physical. He was examined with great care and scheduled annual vaccinations discuss and given. Costs were discussed sympatheticly. He wagged his tail the whole way through. A small cyst was found under his eyelid. An estimate for surgery costs and risks discussed. We felt reassured that he was in safe hands. Surgery was scheduled within 24 hours and was performed the following Monday. He received excellent care and the procedure was successful and post op instructions were clear. He walked out happy again. Cost was much less than the estimate! He's making a great recovery and once again we are grateful for the treatment and support we all received. Highly recommend this practice. Dr's Enke and staff are amazing. We appreciate them very much. They know how important our animals are. They remain healthy and happy with the help of these people. My dog caught kennel cough while he was boarded. I've had experience with kennel cough in the past and its not a big deal. Much like little kids, our boy needed some meds to take care of it. I decided that I wanted a new vet that was closer to home. I loved my old vet but it was in Dublin and they stopped having appointments after 5. That just didn't work for me any more. I did some research and asked some trusted dog owners that I know locally and decided to bring my dog here. The process to be a new patient was cumbersome but I took some deep breaths and was patient. I had to pay a deposit which apparently I over paid for. Which is fine because I have credit on my account for future appointments but I would have like to have had the opportunity to know what the accurate amount was. At the time of our visit we had to wait in our car for a tech to come out and get our dog. It was fine. Not sure why they are still implementing the old Covid procedures but what ever. They take your dog, examine them and then come back out and let you know what they find. The ins and outs were laborious and not streamlined but once the visit was over we were good. Our second visit was for flea/tick meds that he needed another exam for. Again, same parking lot procedure and then bring him back out. I do like that they have an online store front and you can buy stuff from their website, like flea meds. You can get it shipped right to your house. Easy, once its all approved. Anyway, I'm clearly coming back. I've been happy so far. I hope I don't get over charged again. The care has been great. read more

I'm truly grateful for MAH. I saw a local vet who I also liked, but even before the pandemic, it was tricky to ever get an appointment; during and after the pandemic near impossible It started with getting our new pups vaccinated in a timely fashion. Everyone was professional and kind. Getting an appointment for neutering was convenient and procedure was flawless. (Puppy Duke had a few choice words but those are being omitted) A short time later I brought in one of our senior dogs who had been lame in her hind leg. I think I got an appointment within 2 days. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it turned out to be my worst case scenario; untreatable cancer. I'm sharing this story because, sadly, with many dogs in my lifetime end of life with a pet is expected and always miserable. MAH was honest, candid, realistic, compassionate, and so understanding. I couldn't have asked for a better "awful experience" When it rains it pours! Another one of our older dogs had a cyst that needed attention. We were seen within 24 hours. Every time we're greeted with warm & friendly smiles. I know our dogs can be a pain, but all the staff are patient and loving with our animals We have a house full of pets! I'm grateful MAH has welcomed us into their family. It's reassuring to know they're only a phone call away and can see us reasonably quickly! read more

There are several issues with billing, communication, and honesty. I brought my cat in at the end of February because he wasn't eating well. They ran tests, and I was given a phone call from Dr. Mulgrew on 2/23 that he had kidney disease and was in renal failure. I was told he needed to have a week of IV fluid therapy to try to get his numbers down, and it was urgent he went in. I was told verbally that day the cost would be $2500, which at that point I admittedly started crying because I didn't have that amount in my bank. I asked Dr. Mulgrew if the treatment would even work, and he gave me a very short response saying 'Well we can talk about euthanatizing if you want to go that route.' He frankly seemed annoyed I asked, and I felt stupid for asking the question. He also never directly answered my question. That should have been my first red flag. On 2/24 I received an estimate in writing in my email that showed an amount for $1,159, and I felt so relieved. I said ok I can do this, responded to their email thanking them for the lower cost, and I called to make the appointment to bring him in. However, when I got to the vet at 7am on Monday 2/28 they brought out an intake form and an invoice saying $2700+. I said wait amount that wasn't what I agreed to, and showed them the email estimate with $1159. I was told to write on the intake form the max amount to be charged of $1159, which I did at least twice, and also checked a box that said any amount authorized over the max amount charged is NOT to be done or charged prior to talking to me. I advised any charge over that must be authorized by me, which was agreed upon. And my cat went in for his first day treatment. On Wednesday 3/2 I received a phone call from Dr. Mulgrew saying treatment was going well and numbers were dropping, and they wanted to finish out the week and that the cost would be $1700. I was told I could make the excess cost beyond what I already paid when I got paid on the 18th of that month so I agreed. On 3/3 when I went to pick him up they said the cost I would owe on the 18th would be $443. 37, and I said ok. But when I picked him up on 3/4 they came out with an invoice saying I now owed $1093! Within 24 hours I now owed them more than double without authorization! Nothing over the $1700 was authorized or communicated to me. As stated above when I brought him in back in the end of February they said he had kidney issues and renal failure. What they didn't tell me was the true severity of the issue. I actually had to ask for his lab results as they weren't automatically given, so that is something you need to be aware of. What they didn't tell me at that time was he was in stage 4 and in reality he was dying quickly. I was told to bring him in for this emergency treatment of the full week IV fluid therapy, and as I said above, when I asked if the treatment would work I as given a short response and not directly answered. As of 2/28 his BUN (kidney) level was 205. A max number for kidney levels is 40. I found that out after he passed away and started doing research. I was not told this information by the vet here. After the full week of treatment, they called me ecstatic saying his numbers dropped in half and everyone was amazed and thrilled. They showed me how to give subq fluids at home which he was having twice a day, gave me renalk potassium gel, and said to make sure he eats anything he will take at this point to get nutrients in him. What they didn't tell me was his BUN level was 93 which yes dropped, but is still very high and still considered stage 4 kidney disease. His values were well above normal but I was just told how great it was his numbers dropped. On 3/29 he had a follow up appointment and I was told his kidney values increased. After I asked for his lab results, on 3/30 it shows that his BUN was 155. At the very latest, at this point, and end of life plan for a peaceful passing should have been spoken about, but they NEVER brought it up. On 4/8 he was having issues eating again. I asked for anti-nausea medication because I had been advised prior to just make sure he eats anything even if it is by a feeding syringe. Dr. Mulgrew signed the medication off and sent me home with it. At no point was there any urgency or concern. On 4/10 my daughter woke me up at 5:30am saying something was wrong. I went in and saw him laying stretched out on the floor moaning, crying, and gasping for any breath he could get. I rushed him and my daughter to the emergency vet, but unfortunately he passed away before we got to the parking lot. When I told Dr. Mulgrew he passed he told me 'I was hoping he would pass away in his sleep.' That tells me right there he knew what a dire situation this was and that he knew he was dying. It was implied he would live for years, in reality it was a few months at best. My cat suffered due to the negligence of MAH. read more

We recently moved to Martinez and I've taken two of my three dogs for appointments at this clinic. Each time we've seen Dr. Erin. I recommend her for her quality of care and thoroughness and I feel their prices are fair. I don't like that they often take my dogs to "the back" for certain tests and procedures but otherwise, I'm happy. read more

We have been clients since we moved to Martinez in 2011. Today (3/21) we missed an appointment due to an emergency work meeting and were told that we would have to pre-pay b/c of 4 previously missed appts. When I asked for dates, one missed appointment didn't have a date, one was in 2019, and one in 2022. They also counted as a missed appointment one that I scheduled as a drop off for an abandoned cat we were trying to catch. I explained that we might not be able to catch the cat and they said fine - just to call before 6:30am that morning, which we did when we were unable to catch the cat. Unbelievable after all these years and treating 5 of our regular cats and4 more cats that we took in to foster and for whom we later found homes. The customer service is terrible and the costs are through the roof (and you pay an extra 3% if you want to use your credit card or debit card). I am really disgusted with how this practice has changed from the caring doctors to this awful, expensive business. Sad that I can n longer recommend. read more

Our dog has been going to Martinez Animal Hospital for 10 years, and we have always been so happy with them. Recently our dog was yelping at random and having pain that we didn't know the source of. We were close to taking him to the emergency vet, but called Martinez Animal Hospital first thing in the morning and they got him right in and kept me posted all along the way during his stay which ended up requiring general anesthesia. I was so impressed and have always been impressed by the team and Vets warm welcome and thorough care. They treat our dog so well and make us feel like he's very loved in his care when we can't be by his side. read more

Take too long to return phone messages when trying to schedule appoitments or refull prescriptions. They also refused to give my 100% INDOOR cat care unless he gets a rabies shot (hence they are forcing vaccinations on me which are not mandated by law in this county in California), and made mistakes scheduling for a needed proceedure (they didn't figure this out until I made the trip and was in the exam room). My husband and I have been going to MAH for at least 8 years but we are seriously thinking of switching to a different vet. The top two noticeable items that we have regarding there services (for us) are: 1) you can no longer come in with your pet. 2) Miscommunication with pricing and bills. I understand that we had a Pandemic and now they're staff takes up the front of the building. However it is so helpful for customers to be able to be with our pet instead of waiting outside in the car - it's like getting to be little ridiculous. Communication on prices. I think they are really starting to overprice everything (I understand inflation and pricing has gone up but when you look at the breakdown of fees) I mean to clean ears is $400 dollars. Can we get a little bit of a break? Exam fee $79 Lab, Cytology to check ears in house (meaning they don't have to send off to a lab) $40 Hazardous Waste Disposal $5 Apoquel (Allergy pill 30 count) $117.30 (Can get this for $2.70 a pill) so MAH charges $36.30 more Claro OTIC/Simpler Solution 2 (so 1 squirt for each ear) qty $90.80 Ear cleaning $44 Total $376.10 The above was the first visit - then the second visit just to check the ears after the first visit: $46 exam fee $44 cytology to check ears $ 5 hazardous fees Total $95 +$376.10 = So $471.10 to clean both ears. After the second visit they came out with a bottle of solution (without telling us if this was even required or just a recommendation or if we can get at a less expensive place on line for example (like chewy.com); I mean can't I just take the rest of that bottle home from the first visit that cost me $90.80? Did they use a firehouse to flush the ears, it was only one bad ear really. So this feels like highway robbery. Especially when you are taking your dog in for things all the time - it just a little frustrating. My point that I am trying to drive home here: MAH could have waived some of these fees. Just be a little bit more practical or communicate better the fees. For some folks this may be fine but not for everyone, and I don't think this is fair. read more

I had a wonderful experience taking my Mr. Kitty here today. The staff were friendly, patient, informative, and compassionate. They gave me a detailed explanation and quote of the exam and recommended treatments, and I received no pressure to make decisions for treatments outside of my budget. Due to the pandemic, they are very busy, so my appointment was made for two weeks out as a new patient, which was great and my needs were not urgent. I parked in the lot and texted in when I arrived, the staff came out right at my appointment time and took my boy in. It was an easy process and I am so grateful for this establishment's loving kindness. Also, a deposit was needed to book my exam and went towards the total invoice for the visit. My 13 year old lab is seen there regularly, and every vet, vet tech, and vet assistant has treated her with kindness, patience, and gentle loving hands. My dog is elderly and has some medical issues, and I am so grateful for the outstanding care she has received here. I have decided not to bring my boys to Martinez Animal Hospital anymore. I guess that I should have known from the get go that this was not the place for me. Lupe had a testicle that had not dropped so I understood that an incision would occur with the neuter. But, I was shocked when it extended from his testicles almost well up into his ribcage.We looked up photos and found that most incisions from that procedure are quite small, maybe an inch to an inch and a half. Then we had an emergency where our dogs both quit eating for two days. They are chihuahuas and can die from not eating very quickly. They were also puppies, which adds greater urgency to the situation. MAH referred me to an emergency veterinarian. That turned into two weeks of my life that I will never get back. The emergency vet prescribed the wrong medications and didn't process the tests ordered until I called repeatedly for a week and a half. Then, when I asked for a refund, the emergency vet wanted me to sign a non-disclosure agreement to never discuss the matter in any way for a 50% refund. I refused and sent the non-disclosure agreement to MAH. I was heartened that MAH did in fact tell me that no more referrals to that vet would occur and prescribed me the proper medication that remedied our boys within one day. I brought them in for their rabies shot earlier this month. They received two other vaccinations as well that require boosters now. Diego also needed his baby canines removed since they didn't fall out on their own. So, MAH scheduled Diego this morning and Lupe this afternoon. I asked the veterinarian to allow both of the boys to stay all day since I work and Lupe could also offer support for Diego after his surgery. He said no problem. Yesterday, I received a call to confirm that Diego would be coming in the morning and Lupe in the afternoon at 4:20. I explained to Terri what the arranged agreement was and she said that they cannot accommodate the request. I asked her to check with the vet. She returned and said, nope. I said that I was already approved and to please ask again. She returned stating that I will need to pay a boarding fee for the day for Diego. I said that I will take the day off so that I can shuttle dogs to and from MAH. She said, sounds good, followed by the most sarcastic, have a blessed day, and hung up. This morning, I went to drop off the boys and Terri came out to get Diego. I was explaining my frustration and she said that the vet that authorized my request did not have the authority to do that. I said that after what we have been through over the last year, MAH should be bending over backwards to accommodate us. Terri started walking away and huffed that she will get someone, followed by that sarcastic, snide, have a blessed day. I said, you're really blessed. She turned and snorted, I am. An operations manager came out after that. I went through the story with him and he said that he remembered the issues we've had. I admit that I was really steamed by then and asked, are you trying to lose a f'ing customer? Rather than say that was inappropriate language and ask that I not talk like that, while stating he understands my frustration, he said, if you're going to talk like that, you should just go. I said, I definitely am leaving. That was it. No, sorry that Terri has a bad attitude and that she will be counseled on interpersonal skills. No, semblance of responsibility from MAH, or even an effort to live up to verbal agreements made by vets. With that said, A number of the negative Yelp reviews recommended Oasis, so maybe we will give them a try. I just have to get the boys their booster shots immediately. read more

I called Martinez Animal Hospital to set-up an appointment for my dog. He had an eye infection. They set-up an appointment and told me that there would be an $130 "emergency" fee since it was the same day. Since this wasn't an emergency, I decided not to pay the fee. I called today because the infection was continuing. They told me that they had no appointments for 4 days and told me to go to Sage Emergency. I ended up going to Sage and paying a $170 emergency fee. What is the point of having a vet or a pediatrician if they are going to refer you to an ER or charge you a high fee anytime you have a medical issue come up that needs to be addressed quickly? You may as well skip Martinez Animal Hospital and go to the much newer, nicer Sage Hospital in Concord. read more

The folks at Martinez Animal Hospital have taken such great care of our fur babies. During a family emergency, we were delayed returning home to our pets. The staff was incredibly helpful in making sure that prescriptions were placed so that our babies weren't without their meds while being boarded. In addition, my elderly cat's health deteriorated while we were gone. Their sensitivity and care were so appreciated during such a sad time. We'll recommend this place to anyone as well as continue to take our pets. read more
