A friend who used to work in Roswell suggested I check out Martin's when passing through. Service was prompt and professional, but felt the food was just average. Ordered the combination plate with taco, enchilada and relleno with green chile sauce. I was disappointed to see the green chile was more of a gravy and not a traditional sauce most places would have. The batter on the relleno was very thick and pretty much flaked off when trying to cut the pepper. The taco and enchilada were good, but not great. read more

I used to come here when I was younger and I don't remember the food being this bad so I was a little disappointed when I came in today. It didn't seem very clean, and I couldn't tell if I was standing on used to be carpet or not. I had the stuffed sopapilla with chicken. Decided to stop by based on reviews and suggestions from locals. Big mistake. The food was mediocre at best. Chile used for the enchiladas and the stuffed sopapillaswas way too bitter and Served scalding hot. We could take the crappy food and crappy slow service (one waitress the whole time we were there) but THE FLIES!!!!! This is my first Yelp review and I feel compelled to write this for Martin's. The five star rating comes from my heart. While traveling back from a road trip from Texas to Utah to visit the National Parks (I highly recommend Zion National Park...need more than the three days we were there...and Moab and Arches NP...side note make sure you give your mountain bikes a thorough check before you go so mechanicals don't dash your 30 year hopes of riding on slick rock) we were looking for New Mexican green chili beef stew (Frank had a craving for it). So I set out combing menus in Roswell as Frank drove. You would think that this would be an easy task...NO! Tons of Mexican restaurants but no luck on finding green chili beef stew. Until I came across Martin's Capitol cafe...JACKPOT! I then set about reading the reviews...we were about an hour outside of Roswell when I started reading reviews. I can't remember the guys name but his comment about the green chili beef stew caught my attention and he had me hooked with his mention of the amazing chips and salsa. I could have stopped reading there...but I decided to read on. It was one positive review after another with a smattering of reviews by what seemed to be some very cranky people. Vic stood out with complaints about tortillas not being added to her to go order and also the level of spice...she thought her green chili sauce was too hot but her husband thought it was ok...so I decided to judge her opinion wasn't relevant to the experience we were looking forward to once we entered Roswell. I must say there were so many reviews to read that we were entertained the whole hour it took to get to Roswell. After reading about several tortilla issues, great prices, friendly service staff for the whole experience...to only friendly service staff when the check came insinuating that they were now looking for a good tip...I looked up and there we were entering Roswell. I was ready to go get our green chili beef stew. All these reviews had given me a voracious appetite for this dish I've never even had before. However, Frank reminded me we should probably drop off our bikes at the hotel before we went to find Martin's. With the bikes dropped off my mouth was watering for the dinner experience to come...oh and I forgot to mention the sopapillas. So many people raved about them. I was anticipating them taking me back ratatouille style to my high school days of eating at Mrs. Lady's in Spirit Lake, Iowa. So with Martin's typed into google maps we were only minutes away from this iconic experience I'd built up in my head. As we were turning the corner I could see the sign. It had a picture of the New Mexico flag on it jutting out from an adobe facade. I new that this would be an amazing experience. And parking was plentiful! We rolled up to see....CLOSED! OHhhh Mmmmm Geeeee!!! NOOOO!!! They had a hand written sign saying they had to close at 2 pm (it was 5 pm) and sorry for the inconvenience! I was CRUSHED! How could this be????? What were we going to do??? While we sat there in disbelief, another car rolled up to check out the closed sign. I took this as a sign that this really would have been an epic meal that we were now not going to get to experience. While I said a little prayer for Martin and his staff that the unexpected closing wasn't due to some horrible emergency, we set out calling other restaurants in our quest for green chili beef stew. And just like my previous research...we came up empty. Most of the young women who answered the phone at these eating establishments replied...uh no we don't have that on the menu. So we settled for Antigua's. I got prime rib tacos. Frank got ribeye fajitas (which while typing this we just discovered we left the leftovers in the La Quinta hotel room refrigerator...so there goes our easy dinner for tonight). The waitress was pleasant. We each found a beer on tap and all was not lost. One day...we WILL return to Roswell...and we WILL get our green chili beef stew at Martin's...as God as my witness! We went in for lunch about 1:00pm. PROS: Salsa and chips were very tasty. Refried beans in burrito were good, ground beef taco was very good. CONS: red chile tasted like "enchilada sauce" from a can, tamales were ok, enchilada was ok. SERVICE: quick to get our drinks, but that was it. A spilled drink was not replaced, even asked for it twice, requested sopapillas, after asking about them, waitress said she did not put the order in. Service was so bad, we didn't tip, which NEVER happens. COVID-19 SAFETY: Due to Covid-19, the mandatory state order was that all employees must wear a mask, restaurants must not exceed 1/2 of their normal capacity, and each table was to be socially distanced. We observed five employees; one: wore a mask which covered his mouth, but not his nose. One employee was not wearing a mask at all. The remaining three, including our waitress, wore a mask under their chins. Of customers we saw entering 10% were masked up. The restaurant was 80% full. I cannot recommend this restaurant nor will we return. Since I cannot give a negative star rating, I used one star. read more

My family used to really enjoy the food and service here. Unfortunately it has gone really downhill in those areas. We stopped eating here at Martin's because the wait staff changed. We kept getting the new servers were not as inviting & friendly until it was time to leave a tip, then the service tries to make up for it while we are getting ready to leave. Now as for the food. "Smothered" used to be you got plenty of sauce, now it barely covers the item such as the Stuffed sopapilla i ordered which came out pretty dry, i asked for more sauce and it was brought out in a real small dish that contained maybe a tablespoon of sauce. The beans were a dried up mound of refried along with the dried up rice that was bland and coarse in texture. Our waitress was another new person that wasnt pleasant untill we asked for our check. So this was a sad disappointing return for us. read more

This is a restaurant where you go for the food and not the ambiance. There were flies buzzing around, the floor was dirty, the waitress had no idea how to multi-task tables, and had no idea what beers they served (it was a very short list). I had to use the restroom before I even ordered and could have easily walked out because of the stench of urine and filth on the Wall... However, the Posole - the green chili stew was incredible. Came for breakfast a few weeks ago. Great staff that handled our large group well. Nice locals - yeah! The place is nothing fancy, but there's nothing like getting hit with the smell of fresh coffee walking in the door. Food was cheap, and served quickly. Their chorizo was really good. Sometimes that can be a risk since some places serve it heavy on the grease. Not theirs, good flavor, no grease. This was appreciated as after breakfast, was out walking in the wilds for about 8 miles, so not having that come back was a godsend. Will come back. read more

Not sure what is going on here, but this place is back on the list to skip. Loyal customer for years with a few bumps here and there, but the food and service have always been fantastic. Going to skip all of the sordid details, but I will say it took them 5 YES, 5 times to get our take out order correct- and it was still NOT correct. Also, the food was barely edible and that's being polite. The people dinning in the restaurant were even shocked at the cirucs that we had to go through. This place was recommended by an employee of the UFO Museum and it was just four blocks away. So after a short hot walk we settled in for a cold beer and a margarita. I ate the stacked enchiladas with and egg on top and it was delicious. My wife had the combo plate and enjoyed every bite. This is not Tex-mex it is New Mexico-mex.
