I will say though I am not used to pay per-plate for meat at Korean BBQ, I guess Convoy Street has ruined me for other places :) What gets them 4 stars though is not the food but the service. This Korean place cannot be real. Maru owner Kim uses the cheapest and worst meats and ingredients. Beef is low grade cut, and tough to chew on. Veggies are stale. The Kimchi soup has fattest meat slices and tastes terrible. Pancakes are oily and the mix must have been spoiled as pancakes tasted funny. We talked to Kim, the owner, who apologized profusely but she clearly could care less. I wonder why she is in the restaurant biz - she is there to poison people. We went here last night. It was my first experience with cooking your own meats and I was super excited. We got sat down angrily bc we had 6 people in our party and it seemed to stress out the hostess to figure a table to set us all at. Then we didn't get a menu for about 15 minutes and we had to go get our own. Then, we ordered 4 types of meat. We got chicken, shrimp, and two types of beef. Our of the 6 in our party, 2 were kids. They brought out 4 white rice and didn't offer any for the kids (I guess one rice per meat but really). Then I ordered miso soups for the kids. They both love miso for the tofu. Working at an Asian restaurant for most of my adult life and seeing all the other dishes that had tofu I asked for a small side of tofu as there was none in their soup. The busser wouldn't even give a side of it? Not for a charge, not for anything. He said we'd have to buy one of the tofu soups. $250 later for them to be so cheap and not be ok or offer another rice of Grant a small request of a small side of tofu for what traditionally is already there, we will definitely not be going back. Oh, then we ordered 7 hot sakes. The first 3 came out ok not nearly warm enough. The rest came out still ice cold. Bad service. Not very good food. You can tell they are really pinching pennys and it's not a good look. read more

We stumbled across Maru while looking for another restaurant. Happily, Maru was better than we could hope for. Their lunch special was reasonably priced and the bulgoge was ample and tasty. It came with rice, kimchi and 2 crispy potstickers, all for &11.99. The atmosphere is clean, modern and adequately air conditioned. The service was courteous and quick, a perfect lunch or dinner stop for those of us commuting AZ to LA and vice versa. I look forward to eating here again. read more

Moved to the Desert about 5 years ago from the LA area...and this spot has been the greatest version of Korean BBQ. I tried some All u can eat spot a few months ago and it was the worst version of K-BBQ I ever had in my life. But this place is by far the gem of the desert. Sundubu is what we had. Overpriced and they charged extra for an extra egg. And they barely had any meat or seafood in there. The broth was not flavorful. So the first batch was too spicy so it was sent back and returned with hardened eggs. They didn't bother to make a new one. They left the old eggs in and gave me new ones. It was a complete mess. We had to request extra meat etc etc. anyway the service was awesome but the owner must be super monopoly type lol. Good to know what is needed in this area. And they basically told us to our faces they're the only Korean place so they can charge so much. It is what it is and we are what we are. Spoiled by Los Angeles and Orange County cuisine. Stopped by this place in palm desert for some korean bbq!! Let me disclose something first, I am spoiled beyond belief living in Southern California often frequenting korean town in LA and hacienda heights and I have had quite a few Koreans tell me it's better than back in Korea!! So with that in mind...walked in and it was about 60% full but we stood for about 15 minutes before someone helped us...I was pretty sure they saw us and I understand everyone is busy but the lady behind the register can at least greet you...which she did not. Then after a while they sat us...menu had a pretty good number of choices...so started with korean pancake which was really good!! One of best dishes of the night!! Then had their dumping which was reasonable...then out cane their la galbi and it was thin and a little tough...like in disclosure I am blessed to eat amazing korean galbi and this could not remotely match at all!! It was not really bad but just not really good. Then their dolsot bibimbop was really good as well with 2 stirs of the the hot sauce that brings the flavor out!! Had their version of galbi tang would skip it...zero flavor...finally their japchae was really tasty as well!! But overall the poor service brought from 4 stars to 3 stars... read more
