An average sushi spot here in the desert. Honestly while it was okay overall, I don't think I'll be back. Would rather hold out for better sushi options than settle for someplace that's just average. For context solid sushi spots in the desert are hard to come by, understandably. La Quinta actually has two of my favorites BUT they are only open for dinner hours. So I've been on the search for solid sushi spots that have lunch hours. Being that Sam's Sushi was open for lunch and has moderate reviews, thought that they were worth a try. The ambiance of the spot is basic. There was a proper sushi bar which I could appreciate and the restaurant was spacious. My biggest issues were cleanliness and freshness. The tables weren't clean enough for my preference (soy sauce containers were sticky and the plate they sit on hadn't been cleaned for a while). Also I found the temperature inside to be a little too warm, which is always a red flag to me when dealing with seafood. The reason I'm giving 3 stars instead of 2 stars is the staff were friendly. Despite being busy they had me seated quickly and also food was at a good pace. One of my drinks was forgotten by the server but he was kind and apologized about it, so not a big deal. As again, they were busy. Overall the reason for the lower review is primarily for the food and quality. I ordered a $25 bento box (not quite trusting or committing to larger sushi rolls) and was still underwhelmed. The best part of my meal was the miso soup and California roll. The California roll was average but tasty. However, the other two box options were meh. The mixed tempura had hits and misses. Tempura shrimp was decent. However, the veggies were too thick - so the batter to veggie ratio was off. Still edible though. The bummer with the bento box was the sushi and salad. Salad had barely any dressing, and not the tasty ginger or sesame dressing that most have - the dressing was so minimal I couldn't even tell you what it was. Also the sushi just didn't taste fresh. The ebi was fine but usually I wouldn't choose this for sushi. The salmon was edible but not super fresh and the yellowtail was stringy and I couldn't eat it. For $25 the plate looked appealing but lacked good flavor/execution. Overall, the place was busy so I'm hopeful they have a good following with locals and I saw a lot of professionals here for a quick lunch break. I just think there are substantially better sushi spots in the desert...I'm spoiled and have lots of good sushi spots at home that this spot wouldn't be one I'd be eager to come to again soon. read more

We've eaten here often over the past 4 years. Typically sit at the sushi bar or bring our kids and sit at a table. Typical spend is 100-200 dollars-each visit. The sushi chefs are excellent, the best. Quality of fish is priced where it should be. the service is absolutely terrible. Has gone way downhill. Long waits to get a menu, water, refills on drinks, sake, soups. The last two times we visited we didn't say anything but other tables definitely were complaining. Sam's is our go-to place for yummy sushi! It isn't the fanciest but it is nice. The service is good and always friendly. The menu is extensive with things for those who might not be big fans of sushi so it's a great place for big groups. The baked langostino roll and caterpillar are favorites! read more

Our first visit to Sam's Sushi was good. Sam's is located in a medium sized strip mall in La Quinta. We arrived near closing time, so getting a table was not an issue. We had the Sam's roll, the Philly Roll, and a combination box with chicken, salmon, and tempura. These items were good, and the slices of fish on the Sam's Roll were thick. We also enjoyed the tempura, as the batter was not too thick. Regarding the interior, it seemed it could have been a little cleaner, but the table top itself was clean. Well it was okay... nothing special and food was okay. Yelp Short Answer: it is food, nothing bad but also nothing outstanding except service. Location: very nice recent buildout of a large retail center with many small businesses and pretty good parking. Interior buildout: pretty basic, open and nice seating. Unfortunately on my visit they had hip hop music coming from kitchen, different music from dining area, and two tv's one with SYFY and some sitcom on so kind of a mess for ambiance. Menu: really nice menu lot of options but I was just there to check the place out so did not go big with sashimi or expensive rolls. The atmosphere did not warrant a big spend. Food prep: excellent nicely done for what I ordered. Food: it was okay pretty basic lunch salad, chicken, and tempura which was not great. I ate maybe 1/3 so portion size was impressive and could have shared if I had any friends... : ) Wait staff: awesome, very nice and attentive from start to check and thank you... they were a 5 star. Value: yes for sure for what I ordered at lunch, $17 plus $5 tip seemed like a value for what was severed but nothing other than waitstaff was excellent. Yes I would,recommend but it won't wow you, rather feed you at a very fair price in an area which could have costed 2-3x more for maybe better quality food but for sure atmosphere. Cute little mom and pop place in La Quinta. For a small place, they provide pretty good options in regards to their sushi selection, rolls, and service. We got there right after the lunch rush so no wait. We had three rolls, salmon sashimi, and the spicy garlic edamame! I highly recommend the edamame and trust, it is not spicy. I have no complain with the food it was delicious. We loved all the sushi. The edamame was flavorful and licking finger good. My only concern was the service there seemed to be a lot of employees standing around and talking and we weren't asked if we needed anything after our sushi arrived at our table. We also didn't order not even our drinks until like 15 mins after being told we close sit wherever. It was a nice peaceful Thursday evening with hardly any other customers. Years ago, this was our go to place for Saturday lunch. Our servers were so familiar with us they usually knew what we were going to order. The prices were decent and the food was always consistently good. Lunchtime on a Saturday was usually pretty well packed. Then, over the past months, things went downhill to the point that we will never go there again. Prices were up significantly and the quality of the rolls was falling apart. The last few times we went there, we were practically the only customers other than a few takeouts. Seems they're suffering from turnover in employees and we heard they laid off the best servers. I called to order and the guy who took my order was so polite and professional. He got everything correct and when I went to pick it up it was ready on time and I paid and they had everything packed so nicely. These were the best containers I've ever seen for sushi. I liked them because the wasabi wasn't touching the sushi. I don't care for wasabi. So I'm happy about that. Also they were very efficient. The miso soup was one of the best I've ever had in my life. I got the La Quinta roll. It wasn't listed that it had spicy mayo on the menu but I made sure to ask and the guy said it had it so I asked for them not to put any. It was so yummy. I really enjoyed this roll. I also got the rainbow roll which was delicious as well. Loved the shrimp and white fish portion of it mostly. And the dragon roll. I loved this one too. I think it was a tie for both the La Quinta roll and dragon roll for me. I can't wait to try it again. I'll probably do take out again but won't mind dining here soon. read more

Sam's sushi is very delicious and very fresh. I personally only order baked rolls or rolls that don't have anything raw on them. I love all of the options that Sam's Sushi has for rolls with no raw fish. My favorite is the baked Langostino roll and the La Quinta roll, which has, baked salmon on top. I love the shrimp tempura roll and I asked them to add avocado on top. I have been with raw sushi lovers and they love Sam's fresh variety of sushi grade fish I highly recommend Sams.
