First time going to happy hour today. The restaurant was empty at 4 pm. We were immediately seated & got a drink order in. No bartender there yet so our waitress made the drinks & they were nothing special. The tempura here is always delicious. The orange chicken was good as well. The crispy spicy chicken was okay. I guess I didn't realize it comes bone dry, no sauce at all. That's my fault for not asking. Great experience. The decor was fitting of its style. The food portions were more than ample. Service was timely and pricing on point. The food was delicious and we found the bathrooms clean with a time chart on the door. The only area of concern: leftover food & fortune cookies beneath two tables. Omg! This was the best Chinese food that we have had since we were children. I cannot believe the ratings because we had an outstanding meal and our server was excellent as well. The atmosphere is also really impressive and the servings were large. We were only here once for takeout and I don't know why it took us a while to eat inside but now we are always going to eat our Chinese here. My mom and sister ate here the night before last and they were extremely pleased as well and they ordered many things. Hopefully it will stay as amazing as it was tonight. Went in for lunch and immediately seated by the hostess. Waitress came over for our drink order and we ordered two draft Sapporo's only to be told they were out. What? Well, not out...just not cold or connected to the system. We told here we would think about our alternative. She never came back. So we had been to this place a few years ago and it was a small cute place with great food. When we went back we found the place explained and looks very beautiful. Unfortunately our food had some hit and misses. The hot and sour soup was extremely salty. The pot stickers came loaded with seasme seeds which wasn't listed on the menu. We asked for a veggy plate and got a chow mein with a few veggies. The fried rice was good. The Kung po chicken had good flavor but the pieces of chicken were very fatty. The best thing was the Mongolian beef which was well cooked, tender and had a lot of flavor. Staff was friendly. Dinner almost ruined by the earthquake but staff kept on moving. This is going to sound like a Clint Eastwood movie. The good, the bad, and the ugly. We are residents of La Quinta and Canton has become our favorite Chinese restaurant. Our experience last night was not the greatest. The Good: Food was excellent as usual The Bad The service was the worst ever! Walked in the door and it took a while for someone to show up to seat us. The table we had was a nice booth but only had two plates, two forks, and two napkins. All would have been well but there were four of us. We had to request some utensils a few times. We ordered Won Ton soup, and it took over 1/2 hour to arrive. I ordered a tea and after 20 minutes it didn't arrive, so I asked the waitress to cancel it. She said she was making it, but I explained I would just have water. Water was another problem because we had to keep asking for it. Our main food order arrived about 45 minutes after we seated. The Ugly: There were many tables around us who sat down WAY after us and got served WAY before us. Our party decided someone had to speak to our waitress. I volunteered and walked up to her when she was standing at the bar. All she really provided me with was excuses. We ordered some crispy noodles for our soup. They finally came when there was a couple of spoonfuls of soup left! They were extremely busy for a Thursday night. I think their problem was they were understaffed. Owners / management should understand the ebb and flow of their restaurant. They have been open for a very long time and this should never happen. I have always enjoyed coming here with my family because the food is consistently good, and the place is very nice. This visit, service felt off. Our food came out at different times, we had to ask for water, and the main issue was the bill. An automatic 18 percent gratuity (25$) was added even though we were four adults and a toddler. Ate here for the first time this evening. Ordered the early bird special. Orange chicken for $15.00. It was mostly breading with dark meat. Way too much sauce. Our orders didn't come out at the same time. Had to wait for rice. Not enough waiters. When we got our bill the orange chicken was $15.46. When asked why the extra money we were told it was the price with paying by credit card. We were paying cash. Make sure you watch your receipts. More and more restaurants are doing this now. The portions were smaller, the service was terrible (had to beg for water, finally got it when the food arrived. And no one would remove the dishes that just sat there forever.) I walked in with my family there was no one else seated in the restaurant so we sat down and the lady (a Hispanic lady with dark curly hair ) sitting at the bar which is an employee was very rude and snapped at us telling us we have to wait to be seated. Ordered takeout on my birthday 07/20 through their website. Got an estimate of 30 minutes. Showed up after the 30 minutes and it wasn't ready. Another 30 minutes go by and the food was still not ready. We ordered about $70 worth of food that included meats, appetizers, and egg drop soup. We were told that they were waiting on the soup to be done for the order to be complete but my worry was the rest of the food getting cold. While the soup, (which should be the fasted thing to make, compared to the rest of the food) shouldn't have been the last thing to make. I asked for a refund in that moment in which they said they couldn't give it to me right away because they didn't have access to their own website....... Bummed out completely, I give my boyfriend's information and contact number since it was bought with his debit card and asked them to please reach out since we paid $75 including tip and just wanted our money back. I go back on 07/23 to speak to the server who helped us out that day to communicate that we still haven't been reached out to. She told me that they have been trying to contact us about the refund but we hadn't received any phone calls from them. Lastly, I go back on 7/30. A whole 10 days since I asked them for a refund. I spoke with a different server relaying the situation, showing the receipt we had and how we still haven't gotten our money back. A minute after that, they reissued the refund IN THAT MOMENT. 10 DAYS LATER. All that time passed by and they weren't transparent whatsoever. Today is 08/06 and our money STILL hasn't been put back into our account. It saddens me that I have to leave a negative review like this because this was one of my favorite places to eat but the way this situation was handled was very unprofessional & disappointing. Gave it 3 stars because that is what YELP characterizes as being "OK" and that's how I feel about my last 2-3 trips to Canton Bistro. Today's lunch is 50% higher than it was a few years ago, the portion is much smaller, my Chung Pow chicken had very little chicken, our soups were served with plastic spoons and there is a surcharge for using a credit card. The only thing that made the experience OK was the taste of the food was good and our server was very nice. Better step it up people. There are a ton of alternatives out there.
