After driving past Marygold's On Main for years, it came highly recommended, and wow, what a truly superior dining experience. Unassuming from the outside, this local treasure opens into a cozy restaurant and event space with exceptional food and drink. Between the crackling fireplace, plush lounge seating, warm wood accents, sleek bar, and navy banquettes, the atmosphere feels both inviting and refined. The bartenders and entire staff were warm, polished, and genuinely attentive, creating an experience centered around the guest. My martini was aggressively shaken and served in a short coupe, topped with a delicate layer of ice crystals; despite the chill, the vodka-to-vermouth ratio was perfectly balanced. It was garnished with stellar Castelvetrano olives, freshly opened and proudly presented as an elevated touch to the classic cocktail. As for the fare, it was hands down one of the best meals I've enjoyed in quite some time. The Wagyu coulotte was cooked to perfection, accompanied by expertly prepared oyster mushrooms and crisp shoestring tallow fries. This was my first visit to Marygold's and it was wonderful. The dining room was well decorated and very clean, with a fresh flower on every table. We ordered the falafel as an appetizer and I will dream of this! You could tell it was freshly made and I don't think I'll ever have falafel that tastes better anywhere else! I had the shepherds pie, and it was delightful. There was a lot of beef and it had a lot of flavor.. even the potatoes had an incredible flavor and it was more than enough as a serving! I've eaten here before and have had a better than average experience. However, my last visit was met with terrible service. We asked for menus but they "ran out". Not a huge deal and we looked at the website menu. We sat at the bar because all the tables were taken. The woman bartender seemed as though we were inconveniencing her and seemed to avoid even taken our order or let us know she is busy but will be with us soon. When we had a couple questions, she was not knowledgable of the updated menu, didn't know the ingredients, and seemed rude and annoyed. Needless to say we didn't order, we left and had a great experience at taco barn in Newtown. The woman bartender should realize she is in the people and customer service business. Very disappointing. The inn looked great....Loved the artwork, but that is sadly where my compliments end. The service...poor. There were only about 8 tables occupied and yet nobody asked if they could refill our empty wine glasses or ask how the food was. The pasta was fine, but for the price (39$) I expected more. The atmosphere also was not lively...probably due to the lack of patrons. Lastly the value...it's sadly not there. Maybe we picked the wrong thing on the menu...but a waiter should be asking questions and not letting both water and wine glasses run dry. Our reservation for two was at 7pm on Cinco de Mayo. The decor was beautiful, but the two person table very small. Our appetizer was excellent a fried calamari special , which had a nice sticky garlic sauce. After we finished our appetizer everything was slow. My husband finished his beer and put his empty glass at the edge of the table. We had to flag down our waitress for him to get another beer. My $45 steak frite meal was a disappointment. It was 7pm and they were out of skirt steak. Im not quite sure what steak they substituted with but it was fatty. I asked for my streak to be medium but it came out medium rare. I ate along the outside and gave my husband the rest because he likes a rare steak. My dinner turned out to be french fries. My dessert a berry crisp ala mode. Before my dessert came my husband ordered a scoop of ice cream. The scoop of ice cream did not come until my dessert was completely finished. The ala mode did not last long because my dessert was very hot. Almost seemed like the berry portion was microwaved before the ice cream was put on top. My husband absolutely enjoyed his Roasted Cod with lump crab meat, sautéed spinach, celery root puree, and a lemon butter sauce. The presentation was beautiful. My husband generally does not like a lemon sauce. But he asked for the sauce on the side and loved it. In addition my husband always has leftovers, not tonight he cleaned his plate. Made a reservation here for a birthday dinner for my wife. Reservation was easy to make by phone. We arrived at the reservation time and were immediately seated. The ambiance here is very nice but the main restaurant is a little loud on a busy Saturday night. Drink orders weee taken quickly and food was very well made. While our waitress was very friendly, she forgot one of our party's drinks then entire entire until reminded. Also part my daughters meal was almost missed. The atmosphere is an 1890's mansion built as a private home, and from 1910's onward was an inn and restaurant eventually evolving into it's latest incarnation of classical formal dining and art deco fusion with Wainscoting. There is a wonderfully warm seating area by the entrance, perfect for pre-dinner socializing. It's a fairly casual place, with an upper crust vibe. This was our first visit here. We had the impression that it was an expensive place, but that's not the case. The quality of the food, the presentations, and the service were excellent, and reasonably priced. The wife had a house special cocktail called "Strawberry Blond" , and I had a "Hawley's Other Garden" cocktail, served with a large fruit infused cube-shaped "popsicle" I'll call it. We started by splitting the Baked Stuffed Clams that were some of the best I've ever eaten and we will come back here even if it's kust for those. I had the Marigold's Salad with Steak, covered with shaved parmesan. Wonderful! The wife had the Radicchio and Squash salad, also incredible . We split an order of "Tallow" (rendered from steak fat) fries, which were a refreshing, subtle change of what you think fries are about. They offer a limited, but well chosen number of draught beers. The owner and Chef, Clark, is typically on site, and is a seasoned, experienced restauranteur. Our server, Ryan, was super attentive and made our visit smooth and fulfilling . I am mad it took me so long to eat here. We went for a girls night and had a blast. It's got an old school Newtown low ceiling vibe. The foyer has couches and a fireplace for waiting and grouping. The food was delicious. I got the beef shepherds pie. Small strips of seasoned beef topped mashed potatoes with a seared top. Very pretty. The drinks were all a hit. The service was above and beyond. Very attentive. The only thing I would offer is a change in center seating options. We sat along the wall and were very comfortable but coveted the corner booth all night - when we arrived the other options were low center table groupings or a singular high top in the middle of the room. No one wants to be on display in the middle of the room at a high top. I would suggest cozier seating options in the middle of the room. The place lends itself to upscale nights out more than it does a bar scene. Gorgeous lounge in the front could have high tops for overflow. We will definitely be returning regardless. We enjoyed an early Friday night dinner at Marygold's the other evening. We called ahead to see if we could get a table as we had not made reservations and knew it might be busy. They were easily able to accommodate us as a table of 4 since we got there early (5pm). They have done a wonderful job restoring and updating the space. The front dining room where we sat at one of the cool semicircular booths looks out onto Main Street and is quite pretty. The bar area is equally nice. We did not get to see the other seating areas but the color scheme and all the details were well thought out and make Marygold's look sophisticated and classy. Our server was friendly and efficient. Food and drinks all came out promptly. Our two boys were in tow and they have a children's menu. They got the cheeseburger and plain macaroni & cheese which I did not get to photograph. My husband and I each got a drink. I forget the name of my specialty cocktail but it was presented nicely and tasted great (see photo). My husband got a local beer on tap. We opted to try an appetizer- the whipped ricotta with our drinks. It was a really nice appetizer with a balance of a lot of flavors. Between the crusty bread, thick and yummy ricotta, to the cool cucumbers drizzled in a herb vinaigrette and a touch a honey. Well done and perfectly presented! I would only say there was a lot of ricotta so it could have used a little more bread. Our entrees were a risotto special for the night- seafood risotto with shrimp, mussels, and scallops. It was excellent and I really enjoyed it. All of the Seafood was done perfectly as was the risotto. The crab macaroni and cheese was equally good but considering the dish on the heavier side. The taste of the crab easily came through and the cheese sauce was great.... it had a smoky flavor which elevated it and went well with the crab. Marygold's was a Lovely dinner experience! I would 100% recommend but with a few caveats: 1. Definitely make reservations if you want to dine there during prime hours. (We were lucky as we did the early dinner with kids). 2. While kid friendly with a children's menu, by the time we were leaving, it definitely becomes more of an adults night out because of the atmosphere..... especially for a Friday or Saturday night. Stopped by on a Tuesday night knowing we could get in easily. Staff was light and not even half the tables were taken inside. We opted for outside as it was delightful out. Despite the staff being light, we wanted for nothing. The bartender basically served us along with a runner. Timing of service was spot on, like he had eyes in the back of his head. We started with the miso tuna tartine which was mouth watering. It came already assembled which was unexpected but helpful. There could have been just a little bit more... but they always want you leaving wanting more, right? The scallops and gochujang salmon were our entrees. Scallops is pretty much a go to here, but this time it was served with asparagus, speck and chili lime crema. So unordinary and because we were by ourselves outside, we could scrape that plate good and clean. The gochujang salmon is easily the best salmon I've ever had. The flavors are so unique and blend so well together. If you're moderately adventurous, I highly recommend despite not being able to consistently say the name of the dish. We had the beignettes for desert which were also very good. Overall we left very satisfied, not overstuffed, but comfortable. The menu that night was so difficult to choose from. We really wanted to try every diner and appetizer. It's a little expensive to do that though! read more

AMAZING food and TERRIBLE service!! After trying this cute restaurant for the first time for my fiancées birthday we had great expectations! The food and menu seemed great online we booked a reservation about a week out and noted my fiancées birthday in the notes. Upon arrival our table was given away (we came 1 minute early) and were told we can either wait or take another table in their waiting area! We said ok to the alternate table as to not ruin the evening. Everything from there was downhill! Although I took a minute to order my drink, it arrived super late. Inconsistencies in what we were told from the menu options we selected - menu said with the steak dinner 2 options of sauce could be selected but waiter said only 1 was allowed. Okay - then upon receipt of the food which was AMAZING thank goodness (compliments to the chef) my fiancée noticed the sauce wasn't the correct one. Somebody came around to check on us who was different than our original waiter without notice of change - when my fiancée pointed out the issue of the wrong sauce it was mentioned that their horseradish was brown and that it could be correct. Not wanting to argue my fiancée complied knowing the sauce didn't taste anywhere close to horseradish. In between although no fault of the establishment a group took photos with some serious PDA to the point of some discomfort. The conclusion of the evening was not redeemable. Upon request of the check we waited for 10-15 minutes without a person in sight. Finally upon peering at the staff chit chatting I had to take it upon myself to close out at the bar met with a "sorry". Even small elements such as steak knives for our steak were looked over. I'm not one to complain on reviews about service but this was DEPLORABLE! Especially for the price points since we indulged for an occasion! Went out for a couple dinner on a Friday night. The atmosphere was nice, the place was pretty empty. The wines were nice. The appetizers were good. I ordered a branzino main dish, unfortunately the fish came overcooked like a jerky. My butter knife wouldn't even cut it. I expressed the disappointment to the server she agreed but that was it. Not apologetic, not trying to fix anything, just acknowledging it was not cooked right. Also when we were talking about after food coffee and dessert reminded they were closing at 10, so we felt a little pressure, ended up just getting an espresso. It came cold and no sugar or spoon. Had to ask for the sugar, then again for a spoon after waiting. It was worth trying out this place, but not worth coming back to. read more

We went for Sunday brunch for the first time. The website advertised $3 mimosas. We were charged $9 per mimosa. When I asked the waiter I was told that ended 2 weeks ago. When the manager came over and asked how everything was I showed him that his website advertises $3 mimosas. His comment was that he has nothing to do with the website. On Christmas Eve one can forgive a few bumps especially from a restaurant that does not purport to be fine dining however, this was truly a sub par experience. The fried calamari was so deeply fried that the calamari could not be found nor tasted. While the salmon was perfectly fine it was no better or different than a quick, dull meal I might throw together for myself on a night alone at home with a box of wild rice. Boring, lacking in much flavor and not even a vegetable. For a holiday meal and at this price, I would expect something a bit more creative. The cod was frankly, just terrible. The servers were nice but young and clearly inexperienced. The service was painfully slow as well, so much so that we got up to pay the check ourselves rather than waiting any longer for our server. While the décor was lovely, it is a shame the level of attention paid to the décor was not put into the food and service. Will not be returning read more

Wonderful brunch place! Treated the wife and her mom to a Mother's Day brunch here and had a very nice time. The restaurant had a welcoming feel and is tastefully decorated with lots of windows to let in that warm sunshine while you're eating. (But not so much you're blinded by it while eating) the menu while not huge offers just enough of everything to satisfy all. We indulged in the eggs Benedict, Hungry Mary, Prime Rib Skillet, Lemon Blueberry pancakes and an order of Beignets. Everything was delicious, with the only hiccup being with the pancakes. We were one of the the first seatings and they had just received their blueberry delivery for the day so the macerated blueberry condensed milk syrup wasn't ready. They instead simply put a small pile of blueberries on top of the pancakes. The lemon cream cheese frosting was rather sweet and we removed most of it but did enjoy the yummy blueberry pancakes. I was a little disappointed there was no coffee or drink menu to speak of other than alcoholic or spirit free specialty drinks. I love coffee so I opted for a basic black coffee which was not very good at all. Not sure what coffee is being served but I certainly expected something better tasting than what I got. I took my mother for an early mother's day meal. Pros are the place is very pretty, clean, and they had live music in the lobby. Cons are inattentive service and food quality....for brunch at least. It took us 15 minutes to get offered water. Food came out a little too fast which makes me think it was not cooked to order. Maybe because we were on the tail end of burnch. Drinks were just ok from the bar. They should have at least a couple of lunch type options for those not expecting it to be brunch only at 2pm. I had the breakfast burger. The smash burger was tiny, maybe 3oz and toppings were skint, fries not hot. Not enough to send it back but dissapointing. My mom had the hungry man which was just very basic and all of it looked like it had been sitting too long under heat lamps. They should really try harder. I doubt I will come back to give them a chance on dinner service as there are better restaurants in Newtown. read more

My expectations definitely exceeded Marigold's On Main results. Food was average, not great. Prices reflected good to great expectations- not the case. Excellent selection of bar drinks including some fun ones with foam on top and different mixologies. My burger was average to midland. My escargot was very good and the bread they had on the plate with the escargot was very good. Salad was moderate in quantity but nice flavor profile - albeit one to two dressings only. My son had fried calamari and it was ok, and no don't ask for tartar sauce because they don't have any. One item only on the entire menu was Gluten Free (besides $3.50 a piece oysters) which was one of only 3 deserts on the menu... Crème Brûlée. Nothing on the menu could be "special ordered", or so it seemed, with limited special needs requirements such as Gluten Free anything. Bread, rolls for hamburger, pasta - nothing. The menu seemed limited and hard lined. Service was below average and our waitress never checked on us - at all. We flagged her down several times for condiments and butter which did not come with the bread. Just bread on my escargot dish, as I previously mentioned. Ambiance was old "Newtown Inn" with a new coating of paint. Neat logo of Marigold's on the wall and menu covers but none to be found in the art, or live on tables. Maybe a small item, but don't call yourself one thing and have carnations on only a few tables. They cut down the mile long hall to the restrooms and put them off the lobby. Liked that except mens room can be seen from the lobby and vice versa. Kinda weird. Overall IMHO, Marigolds is a 3. If they offered some options for those with food allergies, or even complementing condiments I may feel differently. But they don't so alas, after a long wait after the Newtown Inn closed, Marigolds will remain an "only if we need to stop, and only if we can't get in any place else." But we were seated at the bar and attended to by a very professional and friendly bar tender. Bonus in that we got to watch some very nice mixology techniques! The menu isn't huge but it seems that all dishes are well thought out and well prepared. I had the seared halibut and my wife had a pasta and shrimp special. Both very good. The halibut I feel was a good test of the kitchen since the flavors need to be subtle but interesting with such a dish. They hit it out of the park in my opinion with this preparation featuring a fingerling topped piece of beautifully cooked fish with a lovely fennel salad. I had a Diet Coke and was never asked if I need a refill. It was an hour plus before we even ordered our food. (Service was terribly slow). I had the special peach desert that only had 3 small thin peach slices. The bread we received was tasty but overall a very disappointing dining experience and not a good value for the $. I was so excited about this restaurant and really felt like Newtown has a sought after quiet luxury with the best of New England charm and this fit right in with so many amazing restaurants on the cuisine scene. The ambience of Marigolds is amazing and exactly what we need, even if we pay more for it but unfortunately the experience lacks a genuine vibe. The management and staff seem to fail at the service and culture leaving you feeling tired and ready to go home. Management looks angry and the staff looks stressed, tired and miserable even tho they are trying. Even tho the food is delicious the energy just doesn't translate. Go to Nuevo Monde instead, they seem happier there. I hope management leaves the stuffy pretense and brings in a Ritz Carlton approach. Maybe, learn a thing or two about how wealthy organizations approach the customer experience and staffing solutions. read more

New restaurant with some kinks to work out. The Good: Occupying the former Newtown Inn in historic building on Main Street, it's a beautiful space and they've done a great job with it physically. Especially with the limited number of tables (due to COVID protocols I assume,) it's very light and airy, with large paintings and modern decor. It's like dining in an art gallery! It's also very large, with multiple rooms with unique vibes and a big outdoor space. The menu looks good, as you would expect from a Neugold restaurant. Solid options for craft beer, wine, and cocktails. The Bad: The service was poor. We sat for long stretches without attention, to the point where a man (maitre d? manager?) literally took over our table (and others nearby.) Perhaps the waitress was new, but they appeared to have plenty of staff on hand. The Worse: The food wasn't good! We are big fans of their sister restaurant The Foundry and had high expectations going in. The "fresh" oysters were an utter disaster. They were were dry (without a drop of oyster liquor) and had pieces of shell in every one. Do not get oysters here! We got the strawberry salad, which was just okay. I got the steak and scallops. The steak was good and well cooked, but the (two) scallops were a little gritty. My wife got the risotto primavera, which was shockingly flavorless. I don't know if the vision for the dish was to be "so fresh we don't use seasoning" but the risotto was so bland that it took large amounts of salt and pepper to make the dish edible. I'd find it hard to imagine this was intentional though - seemed like a kitchen error. Overall we were so jaded by the experience that we passed on dessert and went down the hill to another restaurant for dessert and drinks. We'll give it another shot at some point; they're still new-ish (opened in January though, not that new) and hopefully some of those issues were anomalies. read more
