This place is a super small brunch cafe and honestly such a hidden gem! It was my first time here and I came during brunch just to catch up with an old friend. The place isn't too loud and isn't too quiet, it has a nice vintage atmosphere. The food was delicious! I had the cinnamon sugar waffle and my friend had one of their bagel sandwiches and she was a fan. My only complaint is I wish that there was more ventilation in the cafe! They cook things right on behind the counter and while I was there all of the smoke from the cooking literally made my eyes water and honestly burned a bit, but my friend didn't notice it so maybe I was just sensitive to it so we had to leave. Nice little local cafe. Great for a fast casual breakfast and/or coffee. Not a huge menu (wraps, bowls, and liege waffles + coffee and smoothies) but very tasty and fresh made. Had the liege waffles (Berry Taylor and Mary J) and they were delish. Good sweetness so you don't need any syrup. And yummy toppings. Didn't get any wraps or bowls but saw some come out and they looked good. Also had a couple coffee drinks and the Kay smoothie. Also very good. Look no further if you're searching for a great spot for breakfast or brunch! Although the place is really small, we were able to get a table right away. It has a quiet atmosphere so it's also great for studying with a coffee and a pastry since there's free wifi . But there's also plenty to choose from for lunch with their wide variety of sandwiches, salads, breakfast sandwiches (available all day and $1 off with check-in!) and waffles. My friends and I got the classic liege waffle with blueberries, bananas, and strawberries on top which are $0.75 each while the waffle itself is $4.75. The waffle was perfectly fluffy yet dense at the same time and had some type of sweet drizzle on top that was to die for! I will say the waffle itself is quite small though so toppings are necessary if you're getting this as your entire meal. I also got the egg white hummus wrap which seemed a little small looking at it but it was actually quite filling and delicious. We visited Mary's for the first time on Thursday, May 4th at about 11:30am with a party of two. The owner was running solo that day, and he was so efficient and friendly in making sure that everyone got to order and receive the food that they ordered in a timely manner. Mary's is a cute little space in an average looking strip mall not far from the UT campus. Immediately upon walking into the cafe, you can tell the care that was put into this cafe. The color, the diverse menu, the cool and quaint vibe and of course the wall of Mary's. :-) There were so many things I wanted to try; however, we were just here for a late breakfast or early lunch. I personally tried "The Zeus" which is a chicken breast sandwich with Colby Jack cheese, tomato, avocado, bacon and ranch dressing on a toasted ciabatta bread. Wow! It was so delicious! It really had so many flavor profiles, and I was truly impressed. I would love to come back to Mary's as there were so many things I wanted to try. Good for a small shop. Decent coffee. Great sandwiches. Their breakfast options were great. And the latte topped it off well. I loved their sugar-free syrup options. I didn't notice the breakfast tacos until too late so must try next time. They should think about adding smoked salmon option for their breakfast. As a pescatarian, it was a bit sad to not be able to add much protein on my breakfast sandwich. Their cookies looked great. And so did their waffles. Excellent option if you're visiting St. David's hospital or otherwise find yourself in the neighborhood. I haven't explored the full menu but have been at least a half dozen times and liked things enough to stick with items that caught my interest the first time around. The Red River breakfast wrap has got most everything you'd want in a breakfast taco in a larger and easier to hold package. It comes cut in half and is perfect for sharing, or is plenty enough to carry you through a skipped lunch all the way to dinner. I'd highly recommend this one to most anyone - even an out-of-towner asking about breakfast tacos, in a pinch. For lunch I've tried various sandwiches, most all of them good. The last couple have been panini served on house-made focaccia bread, which is excellent and chock-full of rosemary. The turkey bacon version made for an especially hearty and savory sandwich but the roast beef with roasted red peppers and horseradish, combined with bread loaded with rosemary, was like a bridge too far in three different directions. The damn thing could have made Guy Fieri roll over into a submissive pose. I suppose I've tended towards savory and hearty items and they've thrown me a medicine ball each time, delivering bigger-than-expected flavors. If you're expecting the name Mary's to correspond with a mild figure from Catholic mythology that jibes with the hospital next door, you might find more than you bargained for. If you're looking for guilty pleasures, round up some fellow sinners and prepare to worry about confession next week... at your cardiologist's office on the St. David's campus, of course. read more

The. Best. Waffles. in Austin. Period. Seriously this place is very very very good and underrated. The atmosphere was very homely and the waiters were very congenial. The food was even better though. I got the ham and cheese croissant and the chocolate Belgian waffles. The waffles simply melted in my mouth even though they were crispy! Great student discounts, themed food, and friendly/helpful staff! They brought us watermelon after our meal, and were very considerate towards my friends but allergy. What a great little find near the UT campus. We stopped by to grab breakfast on Sun morning. The first thing we noticed was the limited seating for such a popular place. The seating inside included a counter with barstools along the window, 3 booths (seat 4), 2 tables (seat 2) and a large round (seats 6). There are a couple of cafe tables outside but it was too cool for us to do that today. Ordering is done at the counter. Friendly and efficient staff made for quick and easy ordering. We chose to get our order to go. While we waited we watched the staff prepare our meal. We chose the Red River Wrap (scrambled eggs, cream cheese, bacon, sausage & tomotoe), Turkey Bacon panini, a chorizo taco & a salad. Everything was delicious. So when I was a fat kid, I learned to do three things really well: 1. Make people laugh. 2. Field strip, clean, and reassemble a Colt Government M-1911 .45 ACP. 3. Sit & shoot a pencil out of my stomach, with unerring accuracy, up to seven feet. The point is I'm deadly serious now about desserts & sweets, because I'm acutely aware of what I consume these days and how often I consume it. And also, fat kids may be all smiley and laughing around you, but what they really want to do is blow your brains out. This may be TMI. But it does segue nicely to Mary's Pop Shop. Unfortunately when I was there, the actual "gelato pop" portion of the menu wasn't quite ready yet, although it should be in place by the time you read this. But there were four types of gelato available, with three kinds of giant gelato/cookie concoctions, which all looked good but exceeded my calorie calculations. So I went with a tarragon chicken salad sandwich. And it was a really good tarragon chicken salad sandwich. Huge breast chunks, grapes & pecans? Subtle mayo spicing & celery? Yeah, that works for me. It also appears to be a one-man operation, with him doing everything, and his website story is touching. The shop itself is cool. The coffee smells great. I'm curious now about the morning "Breakfast toast" specials, and how slammed he'll be during peak hours. But what impressed me the most was when he took my money, gave me change, but then washed his hands, put on gloves, and made my tarragon chicken salad sandwich. You know stuff we take for granted? Don't. So right now, I'm a fan of Mary's Pop Shop, and I haven't even tasted the gelato yet. My instinct here is to let the newness diffuse a bit, let the tweaks settle in, and give this place a chance to catch its breath. And then pop in for a gelato update. I went against the grain and had a Cubano. Came in ciabatta bread instead of Cuban bread (edit: as stated in the menu) and one lonely pickle. The sandwich was huge, filling and decent, but not fantastic. Service was attentive and friendly. I looked very jealously at the huge salad that was being enjoyed by the patron at one of the 3 (edit: 4, not 3) tables and then looked equally longingly at the waffle her lunch companion was devouring.
