Mary's is one of those wonderful neighborhood coffee/cafes that you are happy to frequent everyday if you can. The staff is just excellent and always friendly. The food is solid. They just extended their weekday hours....hooray. I would love to see them increase their hours even more and offer more menu items but I understand it takes time to grow a small, local business. Sadly, although the food was great and the service was warm and friendly, I took my food to go, and an hour later when I finally got around to eating my wrap crunched down on something painful.... it turned out to be a metal twist tie in my wrap! ::(( .... still I'm giving them 4 stars because mistakes happen and I believe they have a good thing going on... To balance out the sweetness, even though the waffle isn't that sweet, I ordered a smoothie( forgot the name but something the Jane) and that was alright. The after taste was rad weird but overall I liked it. This place is pretty small with simple and adorable decoration. You have to clean up after yourself tho so can't say much about the service. Out of this world amazing, that's the first thing that comes to mind when you take a bite of one of their liege waffles. I must say, they have the best waffle in Austin! Whether you're looking for somewhere to eat breakfast or just wanting to fulfill a sweet tooth, look no further. Their liege waffles are amazing due to being caramelized, butter, and have an amazing vanilla flavor. For $4.75, you can't go wrong. We came here because of such high reviews, but I can't say I quite know why they're so high. There were four of us and together we ordered the queso fresco sandwich, sausage egg and cheese bagel, Italian salad, the Jane, and the Mary. The only great thing was the salad. The Mary was okay - the bread was very hard so the sandwich kept falling apart. The bagel's sausage and egg were awful, tasted microwaved. The queso fresco was mediocre at best, but save yourself money and make it at home because it's simple and way better. The Italian salad was the only good thing - the pesto sauce was yummy and different on a salad! The Jane was made by an employee who was not wearing glove, which I can usually overlook with foods that go into an oven or are cooked on a stove, but with raw foods, you have to wear gloves, man. Overall, nothing special, but the workers were nice. read more

On our last day in Austin we stopped at Mary's to have some waffles and breakfast sandwiches. The staff were friendly and quick to explain a few items on the menu. The space was bright and cheery. While my breakfast sandwich was tasty, I wasn't totally wowed by it. It is good for those days you definitely don't want to cook, but could easily be made at home. It comes with just the sandwich and there aren't any options for anything on the side. The waffle was also good and the fruit was fresh. For the price though I would have assumed the waffle would be a little bigger than the size of the palm of my hand. Overall, a cute place if you are looking for something quick and easy, but this wouldn't be my go-to place if I lived in the area. read more

Mary's is a great place to stop by for a quick breakfast or lunch! I live within walking distance, and usually end up here for coffee and breakfast if I'm trying to get out of the house. It can get a little bit crowded at peak times, but everything is made to order and still gets served within a reasonable amount of time! The Mary-themed decor is adorable and I always find myself staring at the wall of famous Marys. My favorite things here are the B.A.T. (bacon, avocado, and tomato breakfast sandwich) and the classic liege waffle. If you're in the mood for something sweet, the waffles are to die for! They're as close to belgian-style waffles that you'll find in Austin- the simplicity of the classic liege waffle is what makes it great! Sad I won't be coming back because the food was delicious. But I absolutely can't support a place that chooses to treat a man who is homeless less then. My girlfriend and I went by this morning around 10:30am while we were walking in a homeless man who was sitting outside of the establishment, kindly ask if we would buy him some food and a drink. This man did not ask for money, he just wanted food. We said yes and he followed us in, we let him order first and while he was ordering I could feel the attitude from the man taking his order. We then order our food and decide to go wait in the car while our food was being prepared. Before we could leave, the man who took our order yelled out "he needs to go with y'all, he can't stay in here" at this point I'm confused because the homeless man is now a paying customer and if he wants to stay in the establishment and wait for his food, he should have the right to do so. ALSO if it was going to be a big deal, they should have told me he wasn't allowed to be in there before I gave them money AND tipped them. I've managed a restaurant before and never told homeless people that they were not allowed to come in, ESPECIALLY if they are paying customers!! The size of the establishment is no excuse for his dismissal because tables (not booths) were available. If you eat here, do not pay it forward and pay for another customers meal.. you may be asked to remove them. You know, I may return after all to feed more individuals in need. read more

My friend and I chose this spot for brunch during a weekend trip to Austin and we both loved it! It's a quaint cafe and we didn't have trouble with parking or seating on a Sunday around noon. I ordered a bagel sandwich and hazelnut iced coffee and both were delicious. I love that this cafe supports local businesses! So the fun thing about this place is how you can start out with plain Belgian sugar waffles and add whatever toppings you want to it. While the cafe doesn't look that impressive from outside, the inside is extremely cute. One thing that bothered me was that there were four people in front of me and it took me forty minutes to get to the register. There were only two people working and they were also making the orders/serving people so I definitely think they were understaffed. Seating was also very limited and we got lucky that a table cleared up right as we ordered otherwise there were people standing around with their food looking for a place to sit when we first got in. Maybe it was just an off day but I did like the food. I even got a sandwich to eat for lunch later in the day. I recommend this place to my friends and will probably go back some time. read more

This place just deserves an A-OK review. I wish I liked this place but left feeling like I should of went somewhere else. Pros: Cute little space, decent food, and friendly staff. Cons: Vanilla and dirty chai latte = mehhhhh. The Vanilla latte tasted like it had wayyyyyy too much syrup and it was super milky with no coffee in it. Dirty Chai latte was probably the worst I've ever had in Austin. It didn't even taste like it had a shot of espresso in it. I was not a fan of this drink. Breakfast sandwich = were pretty basic and didn't impress. I see why they only charge $5 for their breakfast sandwiches. Really though? I don't remember the last time I walked into a dessert shop and didn't order anything. That goes against my values. "Life is short, eat dessert first"? THAT'S ME IN A QUOTE. But it happened at Mary's Pop Shop. I have pretty low standards when it comes to dessert, and I'll eat virtually anything sweet. I mean no disrespect, Mary, but this just wasn't worth the calories. I sampled the sweet potato pie and the avocado chocolate, both underwhelming in taste. They only had 6 flavors, 2 of which were vanilla and chocolate. I think the bigger problem lies in the texture, which was icy rather than creamy. My friend shared his vegan Oreo with me, and it was actually pretty good, but of course lacked the richness that I like in my gelato. Another friend had a birthday cake gelato pop, which is their main selling point. Alternating layers of cake and gelato molded into a shape of a popsicle sounds genius. Ngl, it looked adorable. The only thing that would make this place better is if it was larger and had more seating. It's cute, but a little cramped. The people behind the counter are super friendly and peppy in the morning, and really seem to enjoy what they do. I don't think its possible to go wrong on their menu, for lunch sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, and of course their waffles. The breakfast wrap I had was a solid breakfast, and was very filling, but I couldn't resist one of their liege waffles - a yeast raised waffle rolled in imported belgian sugar that is then lovingly cooked into a waffle iron until it reaches crispy, caramelized deliciousness. The yeast raising makes for a slightly sweet, delicate texture. And then the toppings...toppings galore. I topped my waffle with whipped cream (of course) and candied praline pecans, and the result was breakfast heaven. I highly recommend stopping in for a waffle! Keep in mind they are only open for breakfast and lunch though, and parking can be a little tricky. read more

Mary's is one of those hidden gems that everyone in Austin should be talking about. It only opened a few months ago, but the staff has already tapped into something special and our taste buds and arteries are smiling for it. What is it exactly? Well, a little bit of everything. This is one of those joints that seems to do everything right. I have never had gelato this good anywhere before. The chocolate is my favorite of the regular flavors. The owner offers seasonal options as well which rotates on a fairly regular basis. The pumpkin in the Fall was out of this world. In addition, there are a great number of toppings that you can add to your gelato. The coffee and espresso is as good as anywhere else in the city and compliment the gelato very nicely. The wraps are tremendous. The vegetables are extremely fresh, the eggs cooked to perfection and the use of correct sauces with each wrap make every option a correct one. It really makes you wonder how Jimmy Johns next door could even stay in business. Once everyone working in the area learns about Mary's, I bet ole' Jimmy moves to another side of town because right now Mary is kicking his ass. Lastly are the pops themselves. I had no idea what to expect since my experience has only been with store bought pops. Comparing what Mary's sells to what you can pick up at HEB is like comparing fine dining to fast-food. The pops are like a work of art with different layers of culinary pleasure to satisfy, I've had the peanut butter and the strawberry. I think they both made me moan in public like I was Meg Ryan. The owner is a great guy who is very cordial and helpful when trying to make your selections. He always puts on gloves when making your food and throws them away as soon as he's done. How often do you get to see that? Finally, the story behind Mary's is pretty amazing. I won't ruin it for you here, so I enourage you to stop by, order a wrap, grab one of the pamphlets that tells the story, kick back, read and then top it off with a pop/gelato and cup of coffee.
