Very disappointing on multiple levels. The food was tasteless. My grilled trout had no flavor and the vegetables were undercooked and had even less flavor. The portions were small. The restaurant has no ambiance. They wouldn't even allow a food order of soft shelled crab to put the sauce on the side. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. read more

We have been patrons of Mary's for over 20 years. We went to the closing out party on West 4th and waited until she reopened. Out of all the thousands of restaurants in NYC - we chose to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary at the new location of Mary's on Hudson street. When we arrived- we met Mary and told her how excited we were to celebrate at her establishment. She couldn't care less. All she did was instruct my husband not to "lean on the pole" that was directly against his back. Gee - thanks. Do not come if you want to celebrate anything that matters to you. And as long time patrons - the cold chill from the owner was felt loud and clear. Doesn't care about long time patrons & doesn't care if you are celebrating anything important. We were in dire need of oysters for brunch and so we stopped by this spot when another brunch spot turned us away. Very cozy inside on a really cold day, we were seated at a corner table just overlooking the streets, perfect for people and dog watching on a Sunday. We ordered a dozen Market oysters (East coast) with Cocktail Sauce, Horseradish and Blush Mignonette to begin with, and I've got to say this is probably the best oysters I've had in years! Absolutely delicious! wow! First time trying oysters this sauce combination and I was mesmerized- 10/10, alongside Deviled eggs- these were really tasty too 8/10. For mains we ordered the New England clam chowder , the crispy monkfish bao buns and my date had the hook and line cod sandwich. Now the clam chowder was the star of the show- she was savory, well seasoned, extremely tasty and just perfect for the cold weather. I literally dreamt of it last night, and I believe it paired really well with the bao buns although I'll give the buns 6/10. The clam chowder? 20/10 it was just THAT GOOD. The sandwich was also good but not as tasty as the rest of the meal 5/10 Be aware the do not have a full bar and mainly serve beers, white and red wines. The freaking lobster! Holy cow! Absolutely phenomenal! I had other food here but I can't even remember it because the lobster was so damn good. The lobster I had had a lot of meat in it so I'm sure the ones they sell are typically like this. This restaurant has a few tables for outdoor seating but it's in the West Village so I'm sure it can get crowded sometimes. I went on a Thursday evening and it was very easy to find a seat. For over a decade, Mary's Fish Camp has been a steady flag of excellent flavors. Fish is easy...to mess up. I have never, in over 10 years, experienced a single poor performance from MFC. The Lobster Roll is a standard or fresh, butter basted roll and lobster mayo filling. I dont know what exactly makes the sauce so damn delicious but it keeps you coming back. During COVID-19, MFC remains open with a takeout limited menu. Be careful with takeout in general as fried foods usually don't travel well. If given the choice of their delicious shoestring fries (only to be enjoyed while hot) or the slaw, take the slaw if you can't pick up and eat right on the street side. I enjoyed my first visit here very much! I went by myself and was seated at their bar area which is right next to their kitchen and could see everything they did - which was perfect. The staff was very friendly. I had a fabulous "Lobster Knuckle Beignets" for the starter dish and this was to die for good. It could have been the main meal itself. For the main dish I had the Cod Sandwhich which was also very good however I ordered French fries with it - and those fries were the only downside of this otherwise spectacular dinner I have had here. I came at about 6:45 pm on a Friday and left at around 7:45 PM and it was very crowded by the time I left. The bathrooms are downstairs and unfortunately they're on the small side - which is common among many NYC places. Overall I will come back again hopefully with friends. read more

A friend and I recently had a meal at Mary's Fish Camp. We were excited to go. Everything was just fine. The prices were very high. But we shared a few starter items so it wasn't too bad. I mean, I'm sure they have a delicious lobster roll, but for $46? Seems a little bit excessive. Although everything these days is so outrageously expensive I suppose it just the way of the world. At least the New York City world. Anyway, the negative part of our experience was the service. They took our order in a timely manner. The food all came out in a timely manner, but once we had eaten, the service vanished. They didn't clear our plates for a very long time, although they sat empty for about 10 minutes on our table. And then, after they cleared us, no one ever came back to check and see if we wanted dessert or anything else! I had wanted one of their lovely desserts, but after a while, I became very annoyed/disappointed by the lack of attention, I just waved down waitress and asked for the check. I also want to add, that the restaurant was not busy. It was a Thursday night. That's the reason for my three star review. The food was fine, and the service was not so good. Amazing food - as always. But this time an unsettling experience - an exchange initiated by a member of the wait staff toward a customer at another table. She confronted them rather loudly (and rudely) about the amount of the tip they were leaving. In essence she was publicly shaming the customer so the whole restaurant could hear it. (From the customer's reaction -it did look like there was an honest mistake made with the cash given to her.) Understand the frustrations of wait staff - but not the way you handle this in the service industry. It should have been done in a much more discreet and quieter manner. Customer doesn't always have to be right - but they should have the restaurant's respect - and in this case they did not. read more

we had a 6:30 rez , which they confirmed several times. On the rez, they make it VERY CLEAR, they hold the rez for 10 mins. we get there ...there are 7 empty tables. they tell us our table will be ready soon. after a while, I ask: which is our table? they point to 2 people taking up 2 tables and said they are having dessert. as we waited and waited and waited, I said to the host, they are both on their phones. why dont you seat us at an empty table ? oh no, they are reserved. i said, we have a reservation...she shrugs and says would you like to order at the bar? we said NO & left. A friend mistakenly suggested Mary's vs a place on the LES we had previously talked about. Mary's is always a winner on my list so i said "sure!" The menu is not vast but everything on it is a curated item well prepared, perfectly seasoned and just fabulously done. All the seafood pairing suggestions were also on point. When we went there was a mussels special which i got, and my friend got the watermelon salad with feta and both had fresh herbs. Yum. I got the fish (hake) and chips which were also just right. Mary's Fish Camp is a teeny-tiny seafood shack-like-restaurant in the West Village. The space is cozy, the atmosphere is homey and the seafood is so delicious! They serve tiny but delicious lobster rolls, clams, oysters and other seafood assortments. The service is great and very personable. Mary's has been serving the Village since 2000. I had the privilege of trying their lobster rolls, lobster knuckles and succulent steamers in 2009. I remember having dinner here and being charmed by the simple setting, and wowed by the succulent seafood. K took me to dinner here. We shared the juicy buttered chunks of lobster from the knuckles. The fun of pulling the sleeve off the steamers and the perfectly plump briny steamers, cooked in their own juices. The lobster roll that was packed with flavor! The bread was toasted, the lobster chunks were chilled, briny and tossed in a creamy mayo sauce- Maine style. It was a wonderful, romantic meal to share with K. Not much has changed since 2009, except the prices. The menu is printed on paper, the specials are written on the chalkboard. They don't take reservations and will only seat you when everyone has arrived. This time we met with another couple to enjoy lobster rolls (2), bouillabaisse, salmon burger, fried oyster and clam strips, shrimp and crab salsa, wild razor clams a la plancha, and elotes (Meixcan corn). The lobster roll was exactly as I remembered. Except smaller than I remembered. The roll was still packed with flavor and succulent briny lobster bites. It was heavenly. I just wanted two of them. The fried oysters were perfect- crispy and tender bellies. The clams were also fried whole clams- tender bellies, briny and crispy. This was a great appetizer. The crab and shrimp salsa with dip was such a great idea- so simplistic and tasted so good. We all wish we thought of it. The wild razor clams were briny and tender. Just very small for an appetizer (each person only got 1 razor clam). The elotes were cheesy, buttery and super addictive. The salmon burger was flavorful, smoky and slightly burnt. It was ok. When mentioned to the waiter she brought another side of hot fries. The break between the starters and the entree was inordinately long four a small restaurant. Outdoor seating is nice and the corner of W 4th & Charles is an amazing spot for an outdoor dinner! Got the squid as an appetizer. It was cut and grilled, topped with papaya salad and was amazing. The melding of the flavors was well-curated. For dinner, we split the lobster roll and the whole black bass. The lobster roll was divine, but the fries were a bit overwhelming; will likely go with an alternative side next time. The black bass was great as well, just a tad difficult to eat - as expected when you order a whole fish. It was also topped with the delicious papaya salad. Fish is terribly over cooked and over a charred grill that leaves the skin of your fish bitter to add insult. We've given it a few tries to no avail. We are not seafood snobs, but we are from Spain and know fish. If you're looking for good fish and sea food find another place. If you like mayo covered heart stopping fried seafood, charred bone dry farmed whole fish while you sit elbow to elbow drinking a 90 dollar bottle of good Albariño in a children's water glass. I took my girlfriend here for her birthday (she's a big fan of seafood, me less so...) and we were absolutely blown away by the atmosphere, the service and the quality of the food. We have varying levels of experience when it comes to oysters but agreed these were the best we'd ever had. She got the pozole and I got the cod sandwich with fries (and the fries had no business being this good at a place where fish is the speciality) and we ended up splitting both. The ingredients were top notch and the execution of both entrees felt special. We've eaten plenty of stews and fish sandwiches in our lives but none quite like this! Definitely a balance of tastes that would be hard to replicate at home. We almost didn't get dessert but caved when we saw a different table get a hot fudge sundae- the same thing about the fries go for the dessert. The kitchen's attention detail in all aspects of the meal did not go unnoticed by us. Everything we ate was A+ across the board. There's a flavor here that can't be beat - and I'm not talking about the food - the atmosphere is groovy and intimate. Most of the other places in the neighborhood are also great but have that 'restaurant group' quality that can feel rather impersonal so it was a real breath of fresh air to eat a fantastic meal somewhere that felt this intimate and homegrown. My friend and I arrived on a Friday night around 9pm, and there was a long wait for a table. We left our name and number with the host, who put us on the list then would call us once a table was available. We wanted to go to a nearby bar to have a drink, but every place was crowded on a Friday night, so we had trouble finding a place that wasn't packed. We had just sat down and ordered our drinks when we got a call that a table was ready. I explained to the host we were nearby but will be late because we just ordered drinks; she was very understanding and told us to come back whenever we were ready. We got back about 20 mins later, by which time we had understandably lost our table and had to wait another 20 mins for another one. The dining room is very small, with about 8-10 bar seats and about 6 tables. When we were seated, we ordered 2 glasses of wine, which are served in water glasses... bizarre. For starters, we had the razor clams in kimchi butter, which was moderate in taste and absurd in pricing (4 razor clams for $15). For entrees, we each had an order of their famous Maine-style lobster rolls, which are based on availability and market priced (on 6/23/17, they were $34). They come with a heaping side of shoestring fries, which were fried to a crispy perfection. Everything was as delicious as you'd expect. Service is a little slow, but it was a busy Friday night, so this was forgivable. And the cost for 2 glasses of wine, 1 appetizer, and 2 lobster roll entrees was $120 before tip. read more
