Today was our first visit in a long time, we always loved Mary's. Unfortunately it took over 30 minutes to receive our food and it was a disappointment. Only 2 slices of bacon on a tiny BLT, and the mac and cheese (that I asked to come out early for my toddler, which didn't) was like soup. It was busy in there but I can't justify 30 minutes (we know for sure it was that long before the server asked the time when she took our order) for scrambled veggie eggs and two deli sandwiches. The plates finally came after we asked our server if the food was ever coming and they were really hot, so they may have been sitting in the kitchen for a long time and the server forgot us. This is the place to go for breakfast. Menu is simple and the food is great. There home made biscuits are the BOMB!!! The staff is fast and very courteous. Every time we come to the beach this is the place we must go for breakfast. They are open everyday 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is the place the locals go. I have been here three times.....and I'm not positive , but I think I'm done. The food is not bad..... but the price is to high for the quality of the food. I get better food for cheaper prices at places like doc taylors, icehouse and ricks cafe. Also, the service is not that great. The server never smiled once, she seemed short ....maybe she was just over it , which I get, but it was like that with our last waitress too. Wonderful breakfast place in Virginia Beach! We came here with friends who have 3 children (including a toddler and an infant) and were given plenty of space and patience. Everything was efficient, delicious, and cheap. I was here once a few years ago and got a giant piece of cake to take home, and I remember it being super yum. Went two days in a row. First day a "four" (less busy); second day was more of a "three" for slightly less quality and slower service due to the crowd. Overall, good,solid diner with friendly folks, ample servings, and really good breakfast. Omelettes, home fries, and chipped beef (often a reviewed) was excellent. We will go back when in town. I've lived down the street from Mary's for almost a year now and decided to pop in to try it out. I have heard good things from a few people so I was excited to see if it lived up to the hype. Sadly, it did not. I was treated to an awkwardly racist interaction with an older white male patron upon entering, so that was cool. The menu looked pretty standard but unfortunately they do not serve alcohol. I ordered the blue crab eggs benedict with high expectations but had to send it back due to a soggy English muffin, over cooked poached eggs, and what tasted like canned and/or frozen crab. My boyfriend seemed to enjoy his "locals only" combo (waffles, eggs, and bacon) so perhaps I just chose the wrong thing. Overall the atmosphere is a bit lacking unless you are looking for a low key older/geriatric crowd. read more

Went here for breakfast on Sunday and was very underwhelmed. Table was sticky and not very clean. Took a while for our server to take our order despite seeing her standing around. Our order took over 30 minutes to come out during which our server never came over. When the food finally came she said there was a mix up & another server took our food. I ordered the southern comfort biscuit which was supposed to be a fried chicken breast on a biscuit. The chicken was barely breaded & looked gross. It didn't seem to be all white meat as the meat looked really dark & had lots of brown spots throughout. It wasn't good. I also ordered a waffle which was good but overpriced. My friend ordered the Mary's feast. The pancakes and eggs were good. The hash brown was so burnt and so crunchy. The bacon was gross, how do you even mess up bacon? read more

The reviews here are interesting and I often wonder if the patrons reviewing Mary's Restaurant are friends of "Mary" or if they have never had a decent home cooked meal... I've been here 3 times and everytime I have been hugely disappointed with the quality of the food... It takes a special kind of something to mess up breakfast food and they've done it each time I've dined here. The pancakes are horrible and hardly have any taste, their potatoes taste like they are marinated in urine then fried (no joke on this), their coffee is weak and icky, the place looks run down inside and dirty and the service is incredibly rude and snotty (I've had several waitstaff give me that thumb-their-nose-down at you look). I rarely... RARELY... ever rate something with 1 star because I can usually always find something good about a place, but sometimes you just have to call a spade a spade. I am not from Virginia Beach and since relocating here, several locals have told me the awesome history of Mary's -- -- but I think it's hay-day is long past and perhaps they either need to get better cooks, better quality food or just pack it up and call it a day. I know what good home cooked food is and this isn't it. Pocahontos Pancake House further down Atlantic on the beach offers better breakfast fare than this place does. So sorry for the 1 star, but I felt like I needed to be truthful. read more
