While visiting VA Beach we read many great reviews for Blue Petes, so we took the long ride out from the beachfront area to Pungo to visit for dinner. We got there a little earlier in the evening, arriving around 5:30PM on a Tuesday night and the place was packed! We were still able to score a seat along the windows overlooking the creek. This entire place was so busy and there was so many staff too - Hard to believe from looking at the small ranch of a house that the restaurant is housed in. Lots of families here too. Their menu is quite nice with many options. We started with their blackened tuna bites, which came out as a big blackened tuna steak that had slices in it, but was still "assembled" on the plate. The wasabi dipping sauce it came with was outstanding and so very spicy! The tuna itself didn't look very appealing at all, but WOW, the flavor was great! And when dipped into the wasabi sauce, the combo of both was so good! Out entrées were the imperial mahi - which I asked for them to blacken my mahi. This dish is basically a mahi filet with a crab cake on top and then the entire thing is smothered in the she crab soup - it was so very flavorful! The she crab soup was really good by itself, but the crab cake mixed with it tasted great! The blackened mahi was really tasty too. I tried their broccoli as a side and had very low expectations for it, but WOW, that broccoli was outstanding! So fresh and flavorful! Don't like the looks of the place fool you, the service is on point and the food is amazing! This place is doing it right!! read more

Pretty bad. I would recommend this restaurant to a relative that I don't want visiting me again. The two star review comes down to the quality of the food. It's just not good. Each table gets complimentary sweet potato biscuits. They don't tell you this so when you order a half dozen biscuits you'll be surprised when you get so many of them. Then they arrive undercooked, looking like someone had a vendetta against following a recipe. They looked and tasted like a mushy, undercooked cookie. Fried shrimp was mostly bread and tough. Crab legs were overcooked and dry. Sweet potato fries were mushy, like they were frozen fries that were heated and then reheated in the microwave after sitting out. Mashed potatoes were somehow crunchy like it was instant mix that wasn't mixed properly. I don't understand how there was such a long line for this place when there are other greater restaurants in VB. read more

Another lovely night at Blue Pete's! The brussel sprouts were delicious, the salmon was so flavorful, the fish and chips were beyond tasty, and the sweet potato biscuits were PHENOMENAL! I made a reservation here for my husband's birthday. We did the Ocean Rentals kayak tour then were right there for dinner, which was awesome. We grabbed a drink at the outside bar on a chilly Friday evening. The place fills up quickly once they open, and they didn't seat us early, so if you're looking to eat at a specific time, making a rezzie is wise. I had a glass of white wine and my husband had an old fashioned. The OF was good, but the bartender used a shaker for it, which is a huge no-no and sort of bartending 101. You don't water down an old fashioned before serving it; that's what the ice cube is for :) We started with the crab dip which was probably the best thing I had all night. The homemade tortilla chips were great! I had another drink called the something Blossom which was just ok. Wasn't worth $13. Scallops for dinner with sweet potato fries and green beans. The scallops were great; the fries were awful. They were charred to a crisp and very stringy. My husband had the soft shell crab sandwich and that was delicious. His sides were also very disappointing. The view is what makes this place appealing and the live music was a great touch! It's definitely a popular local spot. We got a piece of key lime to go and I didn't care for it. That's my favorite dessert of all time, but I wouldn't get it here. The lime taste is too fake. The service wasn't all that great. The staff here is a little rough around the edges. Our waitress maybe checked on us twice in a 1.5 hour sitting and didn't fill waters at all. She barely stayed at the table to ask if we had any comments about the meal after our food arrived and we needed a few items. We would return, but would like to see some improvements and would come back when it's warmer so we can experience more of the outside. read more

Great food and great service! We ordered a large takeout order for 14 people and they got it all correct and the food was excellent!

We tried Blue Pete's on a whim on our way back from Sandbridge and were blown away! It's in the middle of nowhere, which gives it a lot of seclusion, privacy, and space. Tons of parking and very ample seating as long as the weather is suitable to sit outside, which for us it was perfect. The food was really delicious and our server was super friendly. The ONLY downside is they are on well water and the taste is quite powerful. Like, I couldn't drink it, I ended up getting my water bottle from the car. So I'd highly, highly recommend bringing your own water or ordering a proper flavored beverage. But don't let that deter you, everything else really is wonderful and we will be going back! read more

So we arrived about 15 mins early and Aline was already forming out the door on a Sunday morning! So we knew already this place is a gem! We chose to sit outside! Thankfully the bar has a fan so the heat was bearable! Our server was amazing I wish I remembered her name. But I needed to change my order after ordering at first and she was polite about it! Wife and I went to Blue Pete's on a random Thursday night. Haven't been there for a while and was really glad we went back! Hostess that greeted us was very nice and we were seated right away without reservations. They had live music playing outside and even a fun game of musical bingo going on. Our appetizer of tuna bites was of great quality and flavor. My wife liked it so much she ordered a second with a side of veges for her dinner. My dinner of wedge salad and sea scallops was outstanding. We plan to go back again soon!! We may even try their brunch as we are always looking for new brunch locations. read more

I absolutely love Blue Petes. First, the drive out there is so relaxing. It's about 45 minutes from my place, and once you get out to Pungo, it's so calm, scenic and country. You truly feel like you're on vacation and not in Virginia Beach anymore. I came here with a girlfriend of mine for dinner on a Tuesday. It was a hot evening, but not too hot so we decided to sit outside. The place is huge! When we walked in, we were greeted by the friendly hostesses. There was no wait for inside or outside, and it was roughly 6PM (love that for us). They have a huge indoor space, a giant bar, a private party section, and as for outside, there's a bar, and plenty of picnic tables! I've heard they deal with a lot of flooding being right on the creek, and the picnic tables sometimes can be slightly in water, but when we went, we were safe. While sitting on the deck, there was so many turtles swimming in the water next to us. I think we counted 8 at one point! Keeping the kids at the tables nearby us occupied, that's for sure. Our waitress came over quickly, and we ordered a drink. I had a kona big wave, and my friend had a glass of wine. We both had our eyes on the crab cake sandwich, which is what we both ordered. Broiled, of course ... and wow! It was fantastic. I love a good crab cake sandwich, and in VB there is definitely a large amount of tasty ones. I think this one is up on my list, though! The fries were great. Perfectly crisp. I saw they had crabby fries on the menu, and am looking forward to returning and treating myself to some of those because ... how can I not? We were in and out of there in under an hour! I'm sure on the weekends it's much busier, but for a nice weeknight dinner, we were satisfied with our visit! read more

We have been coming to Blue Pete's for years and years. Maybe it was an off night, but the service and food wasn't great. No biscuits, messed our orders up and the mashed potatoes were straight peppercorn. Disappointing to say the least because we really enjoy the vibe and location. We came about a year ago and same scenario. Super excited to go and disappointed when we left. Crab dip wasn't hot. It was gummy and so much filler. Tuna bites.... Also luke warm & absolutely flavorless. We understand prices have gone up but quantity has to reflect that. We left hungry and frustrated waiting on service. I went on a night that wasn't really busy. I was greeted and addressed by staff and made my way to the bar to eat. I will preface this review by saying that I have been in the Foodservice industry for decades and I even owned a restaurant for a period of time. This review is not meant to "downgrade" this venue-it is meant as constructive criticism because I know this place can (and HAS!) do better! I ordered the crab cake dinner and everything except my crab cakes-wasn't hot. I'm certain the sides were plated while they cooked the crab cakes but the meal was not served hot. The broccoli had no butter or hollandaise. The sweet potato fries were cooked well and seasoned to perfection! But, they were cold. The bartender was very attentive and I'm certain I could have brought all of this to her attention and I'm certain she would have made it "right"! Here's the truth-sometimes that kind of information just gets "handled" but not addressed and I felt as if the owners would want to know! At the end of the day, every person that walks in the door.should expect to be served a dinner that is worth what they paid for it. The service was perfect! The flavors were fantastic!! The temperature...was not. Side note-Sweet potato bread pudding was BEYOND! I will DEFINITELY be back ....and will guess this was just an isolated staff error. read more

The outdoor seating was a huge plus -- the views made the whole experience even better and created such a relaxed atmosphere. We visited Blue Pete's twice! Back to back. It was so good. The first night, they were closing but they still were so inviting. We were going to leave but they insisted that we stay. Im so glad we did. We ate on the back deck area and the lights were so pretty. I highly recommend a little bug spray though because the mosquitoes tried to eat me alive. However, that first night I had the Portofino Pasta, Blackened Ahi Tuna bites and green beans and it was all so so good. I normally don't like tuna, but these were perfectly cooked and the wasabi cream sauce and lime were the perfect complement to the tuna. The pasta portion was so generous that I actually ended up taking most of it home. It was delicious is leftover. The next night, it rained so much so we ate inside. It was so lively and crowded but it was still a peaceful experience for us. I had the Blossom Hill, Lemon Glazed salmon with green beans and mashed potatoes. The green beans are so so good so I ordered two portions so I could take one to go. I've been telling everyone about Blue Pete's and will be back next time I visit. read more

We were a group of six for Sunday brunch. There was plenty of parking, which was nice, and we were seated immediately, which was even better. Our server was a kind woman who looked like she had the weight of the world on her shoulders, but she still provided quick service. Unfortunately, the food was the deal breaker and the reason we will not return. The soft pretzel was served with a thick, dark mustard and something that resembled cheese with a crust on top, which made us believe both were old. We ordered five avocado toasts and each one came on a single slice of bread with a very thin layer of premade avocado spread and a few cherry tomatoes cut in half on top. The eggs ordered over easy were soaked in salt and tasted like they had been cooked in the same pan as bacon. They were overwhelmingly salty. Our lattes arrived more than twenty minutes after we ordered and were only room temperature. Why people continue to dine here is beyond me. We deserve better than this. I do not recommend this place and will not be returning. read more

We had a party of 5 that went to Blue Pete's last Saturday evening. Stayed for a couple hours eating, drinking, and catching up with friends. Waiting for our server to come back so we could ask for out bill when another male employee came over, slapped the table, and informed us that they really needed our table because they had a long line waiting out front!! What?!?! Was their money better than ours? Pretty rude!! Our group goes out most weekends for dinner and drinks and we usually drop a decent amount of money. Too bad for Blue Pete's. Went for Easter brunch which didn't require reservations so it was super crowded. We got there a little before opening and the line was already all the way through the parking lot. Ended up waiting about 45 minutes but there was a lot for the kids to see between the water, docks and Easter decorations. The food was great- I especially liked the shrimp and grits but I subbed grits for a biscuits. Their biscuit gravy was delicious too. The kids (and I) loved the donuts and dessert. I would have liked to have seen a carving station and might suggest having two brunch lines set up somehow but overall it was pretty good! Blue Petes exceeded our expectations! We'd heard friends rave about this welcoming local spot for months, and once we finally went, we wondered why we hadn't come sooner. Their website slogan says it best: "We aren't fancy, but our food is." While the laid-back atmosphere lets kids feed turtles and fish from the docks, the menu delivers dishes you'd expect at fine-dining restaurants. We were warmly greeted at the door and asked whether we preferred to sit inside or outside. Admitting it was our first visit, we weren't sure. The hostess invited us to explore the space before deciding. Although the outdoor tables overlooking the water were inviting, we chose an indoor table with an equally good view--and the benefit of air conditioning. Our server, Kyleigh, explained their generous happy hour specials. We sampled several--coconut shrimp, smash burgers, smashes, crushes, and buckets--and even indulged in a slice of carrot cake bigger than my head (with a caution that it serves two to four). Every item was a hit, and Kyleigh's attentive service made our experience seamless. A manager stopped by to thank us for dining with them and to ensure everything was satisfactory. Staff members respected our privacy but were always ready to help whenever we needed something. Thank you for making my wife's birthday even more special--though you may not have realized it was her birthday! Visited Blue Petes on the recommendation from coworkers. I saw some prior reviews and photos and felt confident about choosing it as a dining option. It is good for solo dining, groups, couples and if you just want drinks and desserts. There is a pond in the back with a bridge that gives good vibes for photos, proposals and enjoying nature. If seated near the window, it can be a fishbowl of sorts when people are waiting to be seated and peer in and watch you eat. Reservations aren't required but helpful if you have a large party. There is an automatic gratuity that they don't speak to, but you're made aware of when paying your bill. The feelings behind this could be quelled if there is signage to let new patrons know what the expectation is. Cash and credit cards are accepted. There is an unpaved parking lot so be mindful if you're wearing heels or hypersensitive about debris getting on your clothes and shoes as you transit. When it's rainy outside, expect splattering. As you enter there is a hostess stand and they'll inquire about the size of your party and seat you. If you'd like a window seat, ask and it may be accommodated. As you wait, you can use the QR code to go paperless for the menu. When trying to read the paper copy of the menu, I found it to be dimly lit and just used my phone. Complimentary corn muffin bites are provided as you wait. Ask what the daily drink specials are or simply order from their drink menu if you have a go to adult beverage. Soft drinks, tea and water are also available. They put a lot of ice in the drinks so be mindful of that. I found the dining experience to be fair to moderate. Not sure if it was because it was graduation season and it was a bustling evening or just latency among the servers. There wasn't enough that makes me want to run back but it wasn't horrible. It had good atmosphere to chill out and enjoy some food and drinks. The price point versus the portions seemed to have a slight disparity. Be aware that weekends are a peak time and you'll be waiting. Verify by calling in advance of their hours as they were subject to change. read more

Been here 3x now and the food and service has been excellent each time. You HAVE to get the coconut shrimp, they were a crowd favorite! We almost ordered some to go because they were that good. The crab dip was also good, came with these crispy wonton type chips that were really good too. The green tomatoes were okay, not impressed by them, but we did like the dipping sauce a lot. For an meal I highly recommend the Mahi Imperial. The reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is that I feel their drink menu could use some better options, all of them seemed really sweet, mixed with pineapple or some other type of juice. I think some unique cocktails could be good, rather than something like a fishbowl - just not my type of thing! I think for an establishment selling $35+ seafood meals, they need a more upscale drink menu to go with it. Lots of room inside this place so even if you pull up and see a really busy parking lot, they likely can still seat and serve you. read more
