After a long day and looking for a late meal, Shadowlawn was a great choice. We happened across this great local spot hidden in the corner of a small stripcenter, after being turned down an hour and a half before its closing at another place. Truly glad the other place didnt want our business. It was raining and late now and we just wanted a little hot food. Our server went way above and beyond, when we walked in he stated that the kitchen was about to shift over to late night and if we wanted dinner we had about five minutes left to order. We made a quick look at the menu and ordered a couple appetizers and some drinks. On his return with water, I ordered the fish and chips too. A true locals place, surf bar vibes, there was live music even on a wednesday night. Its a small place a pair of rows of high top tables, a bar with stools and a small sitting area inward. The kitchen is open and to the right, walking in. Surf boards on the ceiling. My Calamari appetizer showed up promptly, 10-12 minutes. Well prepared, piping hot and tasty crunchy good. Served basket style, it is enough to share. It wasnt another ten minutes or so and my fish and chips arrived, also freshly prepared, golden brown filtes and a mountain of fries. Served in a basket as well, the fries were good and plentiful. A decent fish and chips served with a tartar and lemon, malt vinegar for the asking. A draft to go along with it all and it was a good late meal. Kind staff, definitely went above and beyond and made us feel welcome and appreciated even walking in late. The place was super lax and you can choose where you want to sit. The menu was pretty limited and the online photos and reviews are out of date. I was hoping to get fried shrimp but it no longer exists. I wanted to order a drink too but they told me their drink menu was outdated. The fried pickles were pretty spicy and when we got our entrees, they didn't bring us utensils until we requested it. They ran out of metal ones and came over with plastic utensils for the rest of the group. The bang bang shrimp bowl was pretty good but the tuna taco lacked flavor. The food is excellent as always. Normally I order sandwiches, this time I ordered their BBQ Sandwich. Being originally from NC. We take pride in BBQ sauce. The western part of NC serves tomato based while the eastern shore part has vinegar based. Not to mention a friend of mine always invited me to a pig pickin'. He always told me the best part of a pig was from its rooter to its pooter! Yes, I laughed, but personally I wasn't very much into eating pig at that time in my life. But these days I adore the eastern vinegar based pulled bbq pig! Hubs has been here a few times but I joined last night. They had live music playing featuring 90s tunes and have several nights a week with live music. It's small and cozy inside but they have a large bar and open kitchen, clean restrooms, and a few high top and seated tables. A much larger menu than expected with some great items. Our friend ordered a hot honey chicken sandwich with fries, I chose a chicken ceasar wrap with potato salad and my husband had a cubano sandwich with fries. All were good and the potato salad was really delicious and house-made. They were pretty busy and nearly all tables and the spaces at the bar were filled up. Not bad for a Wednesday night. Not the worst food I've ever had but there are so many better places in VA beach to patron. Bartender loudly talked about how immigrants should be deported while a guest at the bar glowered at my boyfriend's nails (painted black) to the point where I feel like he was going to come over and start a fight. We got a crab cake sandwich with hush puppies and the fish and chips. Hush puppies were great, crab cake was okay but the fish was dry and bland. The side of coleslaw was the nastiest slaw I have ever had in my entire life, I truly want to see the recipe used to understand how a simple dish could be so disgusting. I was very surprised by this place as it was just a convenient spot from the hotel we booked. While the food here may seem very basic, it was seasoned really well and everything was delicious. The service was pretty quick and the staff was very friendly and patient as my parents asked for certain changes. The decorations were more rustic but it fit with the food that they served. Brett, the server and bartender, and Chad, the chef, are awesome. They made our experience WONDERFUL. They both have massive knowledge of food and drink. We tried beers that we have never tried before and they were perfect. If your not quite sure what you will like just get a sample. But both Brett and Chad explain flavors very well and I picked my Porter just from the description alone. I am always trying Lumpia where ever they make it. Shadowlawn is spectacular for the Lumpia and it comes with 2 different sauces. Chad said they make ALL of their own sauces and you can really tell the difference. It is perfection. One sauce is sweet and the other has a bit more of a vinegar bite. I loved them both and honestly can not decide what my favorite is. Got the Cuban and fries. The Cuban meat is so flavorful. NOT too salty. I have had them other places where they smother it is salt. This was delicate and the salt was in the pickle. Great fresh bread and just the right amount of crunch. The menu looks wonderful with a nice variety. My husband calls this place an upscale bar. We love the atmosphere and the music. Probably a bit loud for some people but we felt right at home. They have some really neat outside seating, Front and Back seating. I personally love the inside tables . The decor is a beach vibe. Really a nice clean restaurant and easy parking. We are looking forward to our next visit. Just saying that Brett and Chad are crushing it. This same young man was helpful in helping me choose a wing flavor. I wanted something spicy. He suggested the buffalo, but I wanted to mix my sauces. He suggested the Asian BBQ and BBQ or something of that combination. I settled on it and asked for a simple salad. I am super simple when it comes to salads. I do not even need dressing. Lettuce, cucumber and cheese please, and thank you! This was not an issue... order up :) The wings were very good! My salad, no complaints. My husbae order the philly steak and he kept on raving how good it was after every bite. He has visited before and tried the chicken philly, but said 100% the philly steak was the best he has ever had! The atmosphere was cool and gave a hometown feel. We also seen a group of friends come in to dine in. These guys and maybe one girl, age range... under 13. But these guys felt at home and were well behaved. I believe they are regulars. We spent a day at the beach and wanted to have dinner at oceanfront before heading back home. I checked Yelp and came across this local spot. The have a parking lot with spaces so you don't have to find parking on the street or pay for the meter/parking deck which is a plus! We walked in and asked for a large table since there was a lot of us meeting up for dinner. No prob, they were able to put tables together upon arrival. The entire staff was so friendly once we walked in with everyone saying hello or coming to our table to see if we needed anything. The bartender came over and told us the specials and gave recommendations so we ordered a few drinks. To start we had the deviled eggs, it was good but I had to take the jalapeño off before my bite. My hubs ate the whole thing though and liked it. We also ordered the Cuban, Philly cheesesteak, wings and a kids burger as our entrees. The Cuban was good, hot and pressed to a nice crisp on the outside and all the flavors of a Cuban all came together nicely. The cheesesteak was more like a steak sandwich only cause we've had many cheesesteaks from Philly so I was thinking it would be like that. The wings were good and my son ate em all up. My daughter also enjoyed her kids meal burger. We were so stuffed that we didn't have enough room for their desserts. All in all great local spot to check out. So this review is for the newly opened and under new management Shadowlawn Eats. It's small but a great vibe. They extended the bar and still have a stage area. They are making more changes in the future....I saw the back area - didn't even know that existed. The menus are on paper because they are still working on adding to the menu. We spoke to Kelly for a long time and she was wonderful!!! I loved that she wanted feedback. I like the menu - it seems to fit the place. More casual and bar type food and shareables. A few of us ordered the peanut butter crushin and they loved it!!!! This was my 2nd time here - the 1st time Josh was bartending and he was also excellent!! I didn't come here much before because it just wasn't my favorite but I definitely like it more now - it feels like a different vibe and I would definitely come back. I want to try those tuna bites. :) The only thing is the parking lot is still small but they have no control over that. read more

I'm so glad I got to check out Shadowlawn Eats before I moved from Virginia Beach. If I were still in the area I'm sure it would be part of my summer rotation. It's in a great location just far enough off the normal tourist path where you feel like you're getting a small break from that energy. I went in the off season so it was filled with locals both visits. The drinks are excellent and they have something for everyone. I didn't explore too much of their food menu, but everything I saw come out of the kitchen made me wish that I had been there for a meal. I've gotta give a shoutout to their bacon flight though. Met a friend here for dinner and some drinks and was pleasantly surprised! I usually pass by on the way to Rudee's and have always been curious about Shadowland. Parking is very limited in the front of the restaurant. Half of the parking is labeled for the restaurant and the other half is for the market next door. More parking is located around the side along the street. We saw the sign on the table that listed $5 shots and Happy Hour specials and took the opportunity to order White Gummy Bear Shots and orange crushes. Both were delicious! I ordered the tuna steak sandwich (temperature - rare) and Brussels sprouts with bacon. While I did finish the meal, it was just ok. I feel like the sandwich could have used a sauce or maybe some lettuce. The bacon in the Brussels sprouts was chewy and unappealing. I took home a cheeseburger with my hubs and added bacon with a side of friends. Again, he though it was just ok. I am a food critic and please I hope you read this before going to this sorry excuse for a business. This place is disgusting...I cannot BELIEVE it has over 4 star reviews. They must come from people in the area they know, but here is the honest truth. 1) The place smells like old beer and cigarettes and your shoes stick to the floor which screams poor cleanliness. 2) There are always drunk people there, no matter if it is day or night, asking you for money or heckling you...maybe the station they share a building with has to do with it? 3) The food I ordered the first time had a bug in it and hair...so I never ordered food from there again. 4) The staff is beyond unprofessional...they scream orders at each other over customers and scream profanities constantly. This is an amazing place, the service, food, and drinks are all top notch! We were warmly welcomed upon arriving and Claire and Evan took amazing care of us while we were there. All the food and drink recommendations were homeruns. It's always a good sign when the staff works as a team and has enthusiasm for the place, and that's totally true here. At first glance, this looks like a typical neighborhood bar and grill, but it is SO much more. The shadowlawn strips were a sublime starter. It is thick-cut bacon strips, which they cure in house from slabs of pork belly. It's served with a variety of seasoning blends to dip, and were unique and tasty. The Pew Pew Shrimp were also great, crispy and served with delicious sauces. The wings were also amazing, fried to crispy perfection and with really unique sauces. The Pop Pop's meatloaf was another recommendation that was a hit. The meat blend includes a little chorizo, which gave it a nice little kick. The green beans that accompanied it might have been the best thing I ate that night. They were seasoned to absolute perfection. They also had a great selection of craft beers on tap and in cans, along with more conventional choices. They had some great unique cocktails as well. On another recommendation, we really enjoyed Evan's Shore Am Stoned. A really unique smoked drink. This was a wonderful evening out, and place we will return to many times. The fish and chips was really good. Was a little discouraged due to the fact that a lot of the food on the menu was out for the night.

We love hanging out here on Mondays for Pub Poll and Tuesdays for music bingo. Food is great, locals for friendly, and service is top notch.

Stopped by here on a sleepy weekday afternoon. Very personable staff who seemed to know their regular customer base pretty well. Ordered what the waitress recommended, a Cuban sandwich Asian style which had some sort of sauce and cabbage on it as a derivative of your typical Cuban. Sandwich was really tasteful and not too heavy on the stomach. You're able to see the flattop where the chef cooks so it's nice to know it's freshly prepped. Only downside would be the price-points of the menu. I get that beach located restaurants have higher overheads, but the quantity of the food could've been greater for the price paid. 17-20$ sandwich with tip is pushing it a bit. On my 1st visit I experienced the tasty-riffic "Cuban Sandwich" made better than any "Cuban" I have tasted. My "Cuban" experience is mainly from Key West, Florida (just 90 mikes from Cuba!).. Watching the movie "Chef", the day before I visited "Eats", where they "focused" on the "Cuban Sandwich" inspired me to order the "Eats" "Cuban". I was WOW'd by it - plenty of tasty-riffic pork & ham, just enough cheese and pickles on a well-pressed bread. Every bite was a treat to my tongue. I was particularly impressed with the "interactive" staff, that chatted with me, as they professionally guided me through my "beer" & "menu" options . Chef/grill-master "Nick" & super-smilin' server "Tina" high-lighted my visit, but "EATS" staff team "Sue", "Bobby" & "Brandon" all gave me "more smiles than I came in with". This was the first place my wife and I went to when we moved to Virginia. I thought the food was delicious, but my wife ordered the lobster rolls and they were NOT good. I'm thinking this is a one off though because I've read different reviews. The waitress was incredibly friendly, despite just coming back from some maternity time off. Drinks are good with plenty of options. I recommend the wings and the jalapeno poppers. Definitely willing to try again :-) read more

We had a really yummy lunch at Shadowlawn Eats. We visited in the off season (early May) and were able to walk in and grab a table for 6 (4 adults + 2 kids). The staff were all very friendly, and our food was prepared quickly and accurately. The restaurant was clean and comfortable, restrooms included.
