Ok I really hate to give such a bad review but our food wasn't even mediocre. It was flavorless. We have loved this place for many years and make special plans to go there when we are in the area. We have always been absolutely delighted with the food and LOVED the flavors and spices. This time they forgot to use any spices. Plus our food was VERY EXPENSIVE. They did refund our money for the pork tacos but come on you guys $17 for two tacos with only meat no rice or beans? Ours was refunded because the meat was full of gristle and inedible. So sad this place has gone down hill. I had a special of chicken enchiladas and again no flavor at all. So sad. I hope they can get their chef back. I stopped in here on a Friday for lunch around 1:30 after a hike in Fairfax. My friend and I shared the sweet potato quesadillas that were made with pepper jack cheese, toasted pepitas, chipotle, & honey with a side seasonal salad made with mixed baby greens, persimmon, Sky Hill Farms goat feta, toasted pepitas, and white wine vinaigrette and the Recardo rojo tacos: made with: Mary's Organic chicken, achiote, charred onion, pea sprouts, and creme fraiche with a side of heirloom beans with Sky Hill Farms goat feta. We both had the housemade chicha morada: Peruvian purple corn | pomegranate | pineapple | spices. I tasted the salad first and I thought it was flavorful with the perfect amount of crunch. Then I tasted the sweet potato quesadilla which also was flavorful and chewy. The cheese and the sweet potato went very well together. Then I dipped into the beans. They were good, although they could have used some spice. Then I tried the chicken taco. While it was my least favorite of all the things we ordered and it was good with the right amount of spice. The chicha morada was so good that I bought one to go. I went back the next day for dinner and had the ceviche tostadas with: wild pacific rockfish, tamarind, avocado puree, jicama, red onion, cucumber, pineapple, and mint, and a glass of pinot noir. On this visit I was not impressed. The ceviche tostada was delicious for the first four or five bites and then it became too sweet for me and the sauce was noticeably thick. The fish was not spread evenly over the two tostadas. When I got to my second tostada with was mostly jicama with very little fish. Since the white fish and jicama are the same color I didn't notice that most of the fist was on the first tostada. I thought I received a short pour on my wine so I asked a staff member if that was a regular pour and he said yes. If indeed it was a standard pour, I would suggest they get smaller wine glasses. The wine didn't even come close to the widest part of the bowl. Needless to say I did not order a second glass. read more

Mas Masa is a really great little order and sit-down Mexican restaurant that sources local, organic and sustainable ingredients. They grind all their corn in-house which results in these really delicious fresh corn tortillas. They have this wonderful outdoor space nestled under a beautiful gazebo, which makes the overall dining experience very pleasant. When I visited, I tried both the ceviche tostada with a side salad and the sweet potato quesadilla with a side of beans. Both were really great dishes, especially with the addition of the house-made hot sauce which has a deceptive kick to it. My personal suggestion, add some of the cucumbers from the tostadas to the beans, it adds a fresh and crunchy element to the warm beans! I'll be visiting Mas Masa more in the future. I recently had dinner at Mas Masa with my family, when I was home visiting for the holidays. My mom had been there before and was raving about the non-GMO, organic, locally sourced and delicious homemade corn tortillas, so we had to stop on our way back to the airport. Upon arrival, the front door also opens up to their tented patio that is warmly lit with scattered heat lamps blasting to keep you warm on a chilly night. Upon entering the restaurant itself, there are about 10 tables, and a walk-up counter where you can place your order. The overall ambiance is cozy and bustling at the same time. Some of the associates working were young, and the hospitality almost had a family-owned vibe to it. I ordered the Al Pastor tacos, and my sister had the Chicken Quesadilla. For drinks, I ordered a glass of Rose, she had a Sauvignon Blanc and my mom enjoyed the house-made Agua Fresca which was featured as a guava flavor for the day. When the food arrived, it was clear that the ingredients are fresh and tortillas are homemade. The tortillas are a purple color, and are imperfectly perfect. Mine were piled high with steaming hot pork, juicy chunks of pineapple, vibrant jalapeno slivers and fresh cilantro. The tacos are served in a pair, and a la carte. Due to a late lunch it was the perfect amount of food, but for a dinner meal I would definitely need another item to supplement. The tacos were so flavorful, and the combination of the grilled al pastor with the sweet pineapple and spicy jalapeno just complemented itself so perfectly. I was full, but didn't want them to end! My sisters Quesadilla was also served a la carte. The tortillas were stuffed with organic chicken, oaxaca cheese, achiote and charred onion. Again, bursting with flavor and clearly well-chosen ingredients. Overall, Mas Masa did not disappoint. The portions were a little small, but the pricing was reasonable considering the sustainability and high-quality ingredients. I genuinely like this place but I'm sad because the tacos used to come with either a small salad or a cup of beans and now they don't come with anything. The price remains the same however. $10 for 2 tacos is just unreasonable, no matter how good they are. And for a place called Mas Masa I think they should at least give you two tortillas per taco because they are so thin and flimsy they never fail to fall apart and become a soggy mess. And the only vegan offering, the cauliflower tacos, don't even come with a protein! It's literally just cauliflower on a tortilla. Vegans need protein too. Can't you just throw on some beans? Also you can't mix different taco types. You MUST order two of the same tacos. Aside from these gripes which may seem petty the food is really good, it's just too skimpy to be truly satisfying, unless you want to pay a ton. read more

Writing this review on behalf of these wonderful people that i saw get absolutely harassed at this establishment today. Michelle (i think this is her name, she shockingly seems to be in a managerial position) came up to this group of people and started asking them if they wanted to speak to a manager very aggressively. they said they had no idea what she was talking about and that everything was fine. michelle continued to be very aggressive insisting that they said they said they needed to speak to a manager. after much arguing on her side, she told the group that they were not allowed back at the establishment leaving the group very confused and feeling very attacked. even just witnessing this interaction i can tell how nasty this woman is. she is absolutely vile and rude for no reason. she came up to us and said "sorry that you had to witness that show" which left us even more uneasy. will not be returning to this place after that regardless of how good their overpriced meals and drinks are. read more

It is so great when people just go for it. Two young owners with a lot of knowledge of food. One that specializes in Corn, thus the Mas Masa and the other who focuses on detail. They are both friendly and truly know customer service. The restaurant is quant and I love how you can see them make everything, including there neat corn tortilla stone. The food is very good. The highlight (AKA must have) is the carnitas. Every bite is utter perfection, with the home made blue corn tortilla, cilantro /jalapeño / pineapple and the perfectly seasoned pork. Comes with your choice of salad or beans. I chose the beans which were very good. They also make in house hot sauce which is the perfect kick that the beans need. The cheese quesadilla was not as memorable, a bit expected with cheese and the blue corn. I wish they would amp it up just a notch just like the carnitas. Maybe add some salsa fresca, or a bit of charred pepper or something. It would also be nice if they had some home made blue chips with some good salsa's, maybe a pineapple salsa since that what makes their carnitas stand out... All and all a great place, so glad that this new kid on the block has come to Fairfax and can't wait to see how they grow! read more

We happened upon Mas Masa on our way back from Point Reyes National Seashore. What a great find. They have a unique menu of corn creations centered around their own process of nixtamalization, the ancient Aztec way of making maize. We had a delicious vegetarian meal of corn tacos with sweet potato and other garnishes. Top notch guac with radishes and a Pacifico beer made for an excellent meal. Wow! The lunch we had at this establishment I have place in my "pantheon" of eateries. The al pastor and birria tacos were exceptional, the former had grilled pineapple and the latter a tomatillo sauce. The quesadillas were also exquisitely prepare with either al pastor or roasted chicken all incorporated with Oaxaca quest. The guacamole and chips were a refreshing starter. The stars are for some of the friendly wait staff, nice ambiance, good location and food is pretty good. Main issue with this restaurant is the service. It is ridiculous in post emergency Covid era to not serve people anymore like a normal restaurant for the prices they charge. I have come here multiple times with my small children and/ or a large group and it is absurd that with the amount of money we are spending that we need to get our own water and silverware, that one of us has to take orders inside for the whole table. And with small children additional requests always come up and we are expected to go back inside the restaurant to get anything. And why have a 'secret kids menu' and not just a regular printed one? Also wait staff have no incentive to help after we order because we have to tip before we are served our food. Wait staff either feel sorry for us and go out of their way to help (thank you!) or act bothered when we ask for normal restaurant things (sauce, extra silverware or plates, water cups, more food). Please bring back old fashioned service. If I wanted to do it all on my own I would order take out. But going out to dinner should not require so much muscle. read more

The al pastor tacos with a 3 sisters salad is my go to because they're perfect. Little crispy spicy bits in the al pastor with pineapple and fresh jalapeños and a fresh soft blue corn tortilla. I wanted to love it. I really tried - I went several times and tried different things - it just isn't that great. I look at the other reviews and wonder - do people love it because they are supposed to love it - or they want to love it like I did - or they had beers and so they don't remember. Or they know the owners? The pork is really fatty and chewy, the chicken and beans are bland inside and the tortillas are really gummy - I think it's all about the sauces here - and they are tasty but the fillings themselves are not seasoned. It's like bad bbq - where the meat is meh and they pour on way too much sauce. More then once I went in - no one was eating in the restaurant and I had to wait a long time for someone to notice me and take my order. read more
