We each got a Ramen (shiro oni motoaj and aka oni karaka), an order of the chicken katsu with curry sauce, the chizu corn dog, and Thai tea. The ramen was super disappointing. The noodles tasted like Top Ramen. The katsu was decent- it was fried really well and the curry sauce was good. Our favorite by far was the chizu corn dog. What a cool item- so different and delicious! It was a bit annoying that even though the corn dog was quite pricey you were charged extra for a sauce. We also really enjoyed the Thai tea. Looking for spicy soup for a sick grandson led us to this place and close to our area. He ordered the Hinotori Karai which is spicy chicken ramen and added pork chashu. The flavors in this dish is absolutely bomb! The egg was perfectly cooked. I wish they served it with a whole egg instead of half. This was ordered as carry out. It was ready in 15 minutes and the staff was super friendly and welcoming. This location is close to Adelphi Road on University of Maryland campus and since I was there after school hours I was able to park briefly in the parking lot across from the front door. I wish to give it a 4, but it's really 3.5 at best. I went on a rainy day and it was pretty slow in there for lunch. I ordered with the machine inside for the black garlic ramen. Took about 15 mins for my order and it looks really nice. But the taste is very mediocre. Broth does not have a depth to it, it's pretty blend and you can't really taste the "black garlic" at all, just the pork broth that's pretty salty. Charsiu is more like seperated chunks of meats that's also heavily flavored, not bad but it's in the mid quality, not juicy, nothing special about it. Noodles are pretty bad, over cooked soft and not chewy at all, it's like you cooked the instant ramen 2 mins longer and it became too soft and meshy. Staff was pretty rude, it's interesting to leave the tip function open when there's no service at all (you order either on the machine or with the QR code on the table), and when food comes, he didn't even say excuse me/ anything, just roughly put it on my table and left. (and goes back to play with his phone) I am sure I am not going back to waste money on this, especially with such mediocre level of service and food. The only thing someone would go is because it's so close to UMD campus and it's convenient for students/ faculty. But even that, there's other options exactly on the same street, so I won't recommend it even if you crave for ramen, because now I crave it even more and have to drive to Rockville for some real deals. read more

I'm so glad this strip of Campus Drive is being developed and adding more eateries. This definitely isn't the only ramen shop in the neighborhood, but it probably has some of the most convenient parking which makes it ideal. Ambiance: I stopped in a Friday evening about an hour before they closed at 9:30p. The restaurant itself is pretty large for the area with about 8 tables to seat 4-6. As soon as you enter, you find 2 kiosks for order. There's an open concept kitchen so you can see and smell the food being prepared as you wait. Service: I didn't dine in, so I can't speak to the sit down experience. Ordering from the kiosks was pretty straight forward-- just select what you like, pay, and you get a text message when your food is ready. There were people that walked in after me for dine in that were confused if it was self-seating or if they should wait for a server. I'm deducting 1 start because when you pay at the kiosk they tack on a "convenience fee" that's coupled with tax. I find that a little unfair since there isn't an actual person to place a to-go order with. Food: I ordered the Aka Oni Karaka. It took about 15 minutes to prepare. The ramen broth was packaged separately as maintain it's heat for the 20 min drive home. Flavor wise-- it was tasty and I'll definitely order it again. I have been eyeing this place since it opened -- yet another addition for the spoiled UMD students! It's located on campus on that same strip that Jumbo Jumbo Chicken is on. There's a garage on the back that you can park in, or you can park across the street which opens up to everyone after 4:00 PM. I was the first to arrive, so I went inside, and literally the first thing that caught my eye was the Good Vibes Only neon sign, and... a functioning cotton candy machine. I don't even understand LOL. Anyways, I sat and waited for my friend. The staff were friendly and said I could either order through the QR code or order with them. Once my friend arrived, we ordered with them since we had questions. I got the Aki Oni Karaka ramen and takoyaki (I already told you, I don't pass up the opportunity when I see it on a menu!). The ramen had plenty ingredients, but the protein was pork belly, and it was good! I really enjoyed these noodles. Solid takoyaki! I am continuing to expand my range of different ramen spots, and I appreciate their variety... I suppose $15-$16 is average for ramen. But really, the highlight for me was the cotton candy -- my friend and I made some after we finished our meals... it's free! Such a fun random and unexpected addition to a ramen restaurant. Something to consider while reading this review: I enjoy ramen, but I don't get it super often, and I'm not a ramen connoisseur by any means. That said, I really liked the food here. I got the Kuroi Oni Shinaji ramen and the chicken gyoza. The ramen was really flavorful, in my opinion. The ingredients were well-balanced and savory (loveddd the soy egg), and it was a large portion. The gyoza were good. Nothing incredibly special, but they were tasty. And they were a good portion, too. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures, but I thought the presentation of all the food was pretty nice. The cost was also reasonable. The service here was also good. As soon as we walked in, the staff greeted us. You order through a kiosk, which I actually really like. You put in your order, and it says you'll be texted when you can pick it up from the counter. A server came and brought our drinks and ice water very quickly. I assumed this wasn't a place that had table service, so that surprised me. The server also brought our ramen over, which I didn't expect. They were friendly and pleasant. They also happily told us to have a good night when we left. So, it wasn't overbearing/over-the-top customer service, but was enough to be convenient and make it a good experience. For me, there were a couple of detractors on the inside, but that's all personal preference or things that can't be changed. It was a pretty small place. It definitely went through ebbs and flows of busy-ness. I found it to be a bit too loud at times, though it wasn't anyone's fault, just the size of the space. It's also (obviously) a spot that mostly attracts college-aged adults. I am no longer that age. None of them were obnoxious/rude or anything, and it makes sense that's the crowd that was there, but between that and the way the seating was (which I didn't find very comfortable), it definitely reminded me of being back on my undergrad campus. I'm not deducting any points for this because I am not the target demographic for the place, and it makes *sense* for that to be the vibe, but just something to be aware of. I honestly came here because The Spot Mini do not serve Ramen anymore, so I decided to come to the closest Ramen spot. The ambiance seemed typical of a college town dine-in spot. I decided to dine in & immediately noticed the chairs were too small to squeeze myself in. I decided to order the Grilled Squid and the Kuroi Oni Shinaji ramen bowl. I don't know why, but I guess they thought it would be a bright idea to bring the appetizer AND entrée OUT AT THE SAME TIME. I was not a fan of that and would have preferred the traditional appetizer first, then the entrée approach like most restaurants do. I was not a fan of the squid. It was too rubbery, and after I complained, the staffer essentially told me in a nonchalant manner it's supposed to be rubbery (which isn't true because I regularly consume squid & octopus). No accommodation to correct the dish. The ramen was also not worth the $18 dollars they charged for it. It was lacking in seasoning/flavor. The chashu was okay but on the sweet side, which I also did not like (who wants sweet & savory ramen?). There was cabbage in it & it honestly was pointless. It added nothing to the bowl since it was just plain cabbage & was a waste. I've had way better ramen for the same price point or less. It didn't taste authentic. Would I recommend this place? Based on my experience, no. I will also not be returning. They should work on their customer service skills and provide a more creative but simpler, AUTHENTIC method of making their ramen. read more

This ramen joint is located near a parking garage (free for retail establishments in that same strip). The interior is minimalist and spacious. The menus are accessed by scanning the QR code at each table. Orders are placed at the touchscreen displays near the front door. Everything is seamless and convenient. If any questions arise servers are around to answer in person. They have several solid ramen choices, along with rice bowls, curry and traditional appetizers (squid, gyoza, takoyaki, ect) all reasonably priced. I got the raku motoaji, which was their non-spicy vegan ramen. It came with curly noodles in a mild vegetable broth, 2 slabs of pan-fried tofu, seaweed, sprouts, bamboo shoots, shredded cabbage, tomato slice, asparagus and scallions. Compared to other vegan ramen bowls from other places this one was much lighter and less salty. The broth had a much cleaner taste. So yummy! I was in the mood for ramen and I'm so glad I came across this spot. It was pretty empty for a Friday afternoon but it's conveniently located with retail parking in the garage behind it. My wife and I took our first year Terp to this place for dinner. It's a popular spot with college students. There is free garage parking in the rear. Upon entering, you enter your food order via a kiosk then find a place to sit. The restaurant is small with limited seating. I was excited and looking forward to a delicious bowel of spicy ramen. We all ordered the Aka Oni Karaka ramen. Unfortunately, the uneven service was disappointing. We had to ask the 2 male servers for everything. We had to wait approximately 15-20 minutes after getting the first bowl to get the other ramen orders. They had forgotten the rest of our order. My wife's ramen soup was room temperature. I really wanted to like this place but the service here was atrociously bad. Until they fix the poor service, I would consider looking elsewhere. read more

My family was out one day, and my daughter said "I want ramen!" We were pretty much in agreement with her statement. Lol. We found this place by doing a google search. It's right on the UMD College Park campus. Be careful about parking if you are going during a weekday. We came on a Saturday, so we were able to park in the lot across the street without a pass. When you go in, you place your order at the machines by the front door and find a table to sit at. It's a little small, but it was fairly empty so we found a spot with no problem. The young man behind the counter was very nice, and helped us out with questions we had the Aka Oni Karaka. The food came out quickly, and it came out hot. The portion size was huge, and the price was right ($16). It was so delicious! I like my ramen spicy, so I was happy about the addition of the chili oil/paste. super close to campus!! fun date spot or just to grab lunch with a group of friends. i feel like this is the closest you can get to authentic japanese food in the area too ?? (don't quote me on this because i'm not japanese haha) i do think it says a lot that all of the menu options spell out what the dishes are actually called in Japanese. although it is a bit hard to pronounce and to differentiate from the names alone, the menu will tell you everything you need to know. i've gone on two separate occasions. i usually dont like to eat ramen in the summer/hot autumns so first time trying was in september i believe and i had the salmon gohan fried rice. absolutely delicious and nutritious! im usually not a fan of cooked salmon but they did it RIGHT here. second time was trying the ramen with chicken kaarage. to be honest i really dont think the two go well together, but it was one of my only options that werent vegetarian since i've cut red meat from my diet. everything else was still good, flavorful and healing broth with the perfect toppings. THE MANGO CREAM SODA. if you are curious about it, GET IT! i haven't had anything like it at another japanese place. it's so yummy and you get a lot in the bottle! i've gotten it both times i've been at onikama. there's also a free cotton candy machine by the door that my friends and i had a lot of fun playing with and making cotton candy. just grab the plastic cups with the cotton candy beads and pour them into the machine when it's on! super fun to make your own cotton candy. read more

My friend and I went here yesterday. Immediately when we walked in, we noticed that two tables still hadn't been cleaned off. They were not busy at all. We approached the counter, and this girl was sitting there on her phone, doing absolutely nothing. Whatever, no big deal, maybe it's not her job. We ordered a cheese corn dog, which arrived fairly quickly, and it was good. A few minutes later, I got my chicken katsu curry, which was delicious. About 5 or 10 minutes pass, and my friend is still waiting for her food. She notices at the counter that there's a bag sitting there. She goes up to the counter and asks the girl there if that is her food because the website said her food was ready. The girl says, "Oh, yes, it is actually." Okay...so why was it labeled as "pick up"?? My friend and I walked in together, we sat at the same table, ordered from the same table, why would you think that one order was "pick up"?? My friend even made sure that she put the "dine in" option. Made no sense. Then my friend asked if she could get a new order because it had been sitting and was probably cold. The girl at the counter asked her to eat it anyway!! Are you serious? You fucked up her order and essentially force her to eat it? Really? My friend was didn't want to fight it so she took the food to our table and started eating it. She took one bite, stirred it, and then noticed a long hair in her ramen! My friend asked for a refund for her entire order, which was given to her, but that was the nail in the coffin. We quickly left after that. We will never return to this restaurant. Oh, and when we left, all of the tables that had been full of customers when we arrived were STILL not cleaned off 40 minutes later. read more

Broth of pork and vegan is both a little metallic and strong of bamboo with thin mouth feel. Friend chicken is very sweet, on a deep bed of white rice, and an excessive glob of mayo. Asked what some ingredients were and they had to go and ask someone in the back- which seemed odd. The restaurant could be cleaner. Their highchair was crusty and sticky.
