    Pepino and horchata
    Ben J.

Tried this spot while doing laundry next door with my partner and we decided to split two of the El Ranchero burritos -- the red pork chorizo and the green chicken chorizo. The ingredients sounded amazing: eggs, potatoes, Mexican cheese, guacamole, and sour cream. Flavor-wise, both burritos actually tasted really good and the salsas were delicious too. Unfortunately, the texture kind of ruined it for us. Both burritos had the exact same very mushy texture, and after a few bites we were both over it. There were supposed to be potatoes inside, but it barely seemed like there were any. Crispy potatoes would've made a huge difference and added some texture. At $21 each, we just didn't feel like the burritos were worth the price. The real highlight of our visit was the drinks -- we got the horchata and pepino agua fresca, and both were SO good. Definitely our favorite part of the meal. Burritos: 2/5 Agua frescas: 5/5

    Green Chile Chicken Breakfast Burrito

Masa y Taza is popping off in the LBC, and they're doing breakfast burritos right. We came in on a Sunday morning and waited about 25 minutes to place our order. Once we did, the food came out relatively quick. Next time I would call in my order for pickup. I went with the green chile chicken breakfast burrito. I really loved the combination of ingredients, the amount of cheese, and the fresh and chewy tortilla. You get your choice of two salsas with your order, and you don't want to miss the salsa verde. We love a salsa selection. As a non-coffee drinker I would have loved to see some tea options. How tasty would a horchata chai be?! I went with the pepino agua fresca which was nice and refreshing.

Mexican mocha. It's also smokey I have to find better words to describe it. Very pleased

This is so good! Smokey chorizo I can't explain it you have to try it. I'm so glad it's distinctly different from other grab and go burritos!!!! Fresh tortilla like a warm hug! I got the chipotle crema salsa. I feel like everything is hand made and very well made. The guy behind the counter gave very good recommendations. We had dessert on top of the food we have. From food to drinks! There so much love and pride from the staff making it I'm so proud and makes me happy being a local cause of places like this. Will update when I get my dessert!!!! Ughhhh I know I will miss it once I finish breakfast. Oh and ambiance, modern, minimalist, clean, just the way I like it. Music is so my era lol. It has such a Mexico city vibe. If you want to savor your slow mornings come visit!

El Chorizo Verde de Pollo (Green Chicken) and the El Clásico breakfast burritos.

Came here with my friend a few months ago after I learned she'd never been and it's in her neighborhood. This place is small with a few tables to dine in, but everything I tried has was great. We walked but they also have a few parking spots on the right side of the building. We got the El Chorizo Verde de Pollo (Green Chicken) and El Clásico breakfast burritos. The El Clásico was our favorite. I also got the Horchata Latte which was great. All the staff were super kind, including the owner who checked on us often and shared a bit about the business. Very kind and caring. I hope folks continue to support this place!

My partner put this spot up for breakfast this morning. It has been wildly popular, but we showed up early to beat the rush. Parking can be a challenge on Fourth Street, but sometimes (especially in the morning) you can get lucky. Just don't park behind the restaurant in the lot next to the laundry. Some signs make that pretty clear. When you walk in, it's a very nice place with plenty of table seating and a small menu to make great choices. We decided to split a El Classico breakfast burrito with bacon, eggs, potatoes, cheese all in a homemade flour burrito tortilla. She had a cup of Cafe de Olla, and it was a perfect natural. No need for cream or sugar, bringing her thoughts of home with her mother. We also shared the churro french toast that was stuffed with custard and came with gooey chocolate dip. It took be back to Spain by how good they were. We enjoyed the tortillas de Mantequilla, and again the homemade flour tortillas were amazing, sending me back to times as a kid. These were better than my grandmother's. The service was great overall, these guys do well behind the counter, and in the kitchen. We will definitely come back to try their breakfast tacos.

3.5/5 Before coming here I did read some mixed reviews about the coffee but decided to try it anyways. I went with the mazapán banana latte iced with an extra shot. It was strong but the flavor wasn't there. I'd like to think it's because I did add an extra shot and maybe that changed the flavor, but idk. We also got 2 burritos, el ranchero w/red chorizo and a classic burrito w/bacon. They were both mediocre, my husband wasn't the biggest fan of it. I thought the salsa would be inside the burrito but it came separate in little small containers. He got 2, a green and red salsa, meanwhile I only got 1 chipotle salsa, barely enough for like half a burrito. Would I come back here most likely not. We did place our order for pick up cuz we were driving from about 40/50 minutes away. The guy doing the pick up orders was really nice and kept assuring me that my order I was almost done.

I was in the area and wanted to get breakfast and this place came up. It was street parking only and pretty tricky to find a spot. Inside, it was clean and plenty of tables to eat at. They're known for breakfast burritos so I got the el classico with bacon. The burrito had eggs, potatoes, cheese, and chipotle mayo. It tasted pretty good and the portion was big.

Maza y Taza feels less like a café and more like a living room for the neighborhood. I met Chef Gabriel, one of the co-owners, and he's genuinely hands-on -- passing out orders, greeting people, and taking the time to talk. Calling us "customers" doesn't really fit; it's clearly a community he's building, and as someone who lives just steps away, it feels good to be part of that. I ordered the Burrito El Clásico ($15) with bacon -- handmade Chihuahua-style flour tortilla that's fluffy with just the right crunch, packed with eggs, potatoes, and a Mexican cheese blend. Simple, comforting, and executed perfectly. Paired it with their Iced Mocha Mexicano with oat milk, a rich espresso blended with Mexican table chocolate and traditional spices -- bold, aromatic, and smooth without being overly sweet. This is the kind of place you don't just visit -- you show up for it.

Stopped by for a quick bite and some caffeine and I absolutely loved the Papas y Salsa Macha & the Cafe De Olla! The potatoes were savory, smokey, and cooked really well. I got my Cafe De Olla iced and it was smooth with just the right amount of sweetness. Service was very friendly and welcoming. Interior was simple yet charming. Love that there are big windows with lots of light. Masa y Taza had such a warm vibe. I plan to come back soon and try more off the menu! Highly recommend.

Tried here for the first time the other day. The horchata was watered down. I was able to exchange it for the cucumber agua Fresca which was cool. The churro toast was delicious. I would go back for those.

    Cafe de olla
    Teira R.

The cafe de olla is super delicious, I absolutely enjoyed trying this for the first time. It wasn't too sweet or too bitter, it was just right. I did not care for the green salsa chorizo. It looked odd and had no flavor. The tacos were also pricey at $6 for one taco. However I would like to go back for cafe de olla and try the breakfast burrito. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. They make sure you are taken care of and enjoy your visit.

I found out about this place through Instagram! Bookmarked it since their coffee drinks look amazing and I'm always looking for new cafe spots to take hubby! He ordered the iced drip coffee and he was impressed! And that says a lot coming from a guy that thinks everything is "good"!lol I ordered the iced jamaica milk tea and it had a great balance of sweetness, tart, creamy! I'll definitely order it again! I loveee the vibrant color as well. It tasted really refreshing. I do suggest going really early to skip the peak hours. My little family and I arrived around 8:30am on a Sunday. As we sat down, the line got so long and out the door. If you have littles, I suggest not bringing your strollers. Good thing we didn't because it got super packed. Since they just opened, I'm assuming everyone's checking out what all the hype is about. My husband and I enjoyed our orders--El Ranchero burrito and La Espina taco. I loveee the way they cooked the eggs, fluffy and soft. I hate overcooked, rubbery scrambled eggs. I always order nopales and this had amazing flavor profile. Nothing was overpowering. It paired well with the crema chipotle sauce and green salsa! We'll definitely be back to try other food items. I took one star off just because parking is difficult to come by. We had to drive around twice and walked a block or two. It's expected though being on 4th St.. Welcome to Long Beach, Masa y Taza!

Finally able to try this new gem. Simple and clean inside, very nice staff. I got the iced horchata latte and the burrito Classico with bacon. The tortillas are made fresh as well as the salsas. The coffee was delicious, the burrito was big and the salsas brought it all together. Classic menu, can't wait to come back to try the other breakfast burritos and the churro French toast

It's normally taco Tuesday or dinner. It wasn't busy when we arrived. Mainly everyone was seated outside which we wanted a table as well. There was one that we were interested in and asked if we could have it which the waitress working was ok with. But it needed clearing up. It took a while for someone to come out and clear and clean the table up. It was fine waiting but it was like did someone forget about us. Anyways. We got seated and then the waiting continued. It could be that they were short staff but it seemed like there was only one person working. It took a while for someone to finally come back and acknowledge us and take our order. After that the chips and salsa were brought out. Once we ordered the drinks it was easier to place everything together. Menu for happy hour is pretty limited. A few drinks and beer on drafts and for food, maybe 6 items on the menu. Went with an order of the street corn which was quite tasty. An order of the mole chicken nachos and the queso dip with barria. Out of the three, the queso dips and the street corn were great. Nachos were good but nothing really major. The flavors of everything were quite tasty. Dishes were 12.00 an item. For happy hour, it was decent and what we had was good. The service was pretty slow at the beginning. Only the front patio and inside seating was available as the back patio wasn't open. We did start to see other staff walking in so maybe there was only one staff during the time.

The soup here lacks the tastebud awakening zip that Don Chato's has. The ono fish taco experience was my fault... I hate fried fish taco, so I had lofty expectations, but due to the fact that I do not prefer corn tortillas, guacamole or raw onions, led to much disappointment since It has all three. Totally my fault. The butternut enchilada was lacking in the expected savoriness... this is being polite. The potato taquito was okay... but I am not a taquito person, so if you are I would seriously encourage you to try it. The star of the table was the Mexican corn. It may not compete with Cornman in Lincoln Heights, but it was decent. I scraped off the onions and toppings on the ono tacos, put the fish on the flour tortillas that another person didn't want, and topped the fish with refried beans, street corn and a but if the chicken tortilla soup broth to make due. When you are driving more than 30 minutes for this experience, I think you would agree that it was less that a proper way to celebrate a birthday. Oh and if there isn't any street parking. It'll cost you about 9 bucks in the lot. I didn't use the restroom, so I cant review its cleanliness. Our waitress was flawless taking orders and delivering food The restaurant itself has a great layout and an outdoor courtyard complete with propane heaters and umbrellas - I loved that... but my favorite part was out front, no not the seating area in the former parking spaces, nope... it was the collapsed woman on the sidewalk, walking her dog with snot running out of her nose because she was huffing some aerosol can of whatever. This truly set the mood upon arrival. Two stars for being close to a lot of other food choices to visit afterward.

Seeing people going in and out which I knew it was a restaurant. Last night we started off with drinks at the speakeasy next door. The two places share restrooms and that's how I found out about this place. Let me say it was a vibe. The first thing you notice from the back, the bar area and Photo Booth. And the live DJ keeping the place on its feet. We ended up wanted to check it out as it was a full restaurant and bar. Friday night without a reservation, spoke with hostess which they could accommodate 6 of us in a bit. Still had to close out at the other place before. The restaurant has a cool vibe with the main dining area in front, bar area towards the back side and on the opposite site is where the DJ booth was. Sam was our waitress who took very good care of us. Very sweet, friendly and of course attentive. Made sure that we were well taken cared of and if anything was needed she was there. It's a cool Mexican restaurant with a cool vibe to match. The place did get lively and was pretty full. You had parties up and dancing and enjoying themselves. Anyway, food and drinks. Started off with some spicy margaritas. Wow, they were strong but good. You had to sip versus drink... lol... Bartender was not playing and in a good way. The menu is somewhat limited compared to other restaurants but what was offered all looked amazing. A modern twist to Mexican food but still with the amazing authentic flavors. Instead of a meal we opted for à la carte and shared everything. Also was informed that the dishes are like tapas and great for sharing. Chips and salsa were brought out which both the chips and salsa were excellent. An order or the aguachille which had that nice sour taste with the lime juice perfectly balanced for the shrimp and trimmings. Served with tostada. The shrimp ceviche, another wonderful dish. Nicely marinaded in the lime juice was very flavorful and also served with tostada. An order of the enchiladas, came with three but we split it for 6 of us. The cheese and filling was very good. The molcajete served in a volcanic bowl stuffed with different meat, cactus, cheese all combined to create an amazing dish full of flavors. A must have and lastly the adobado hamachi collar, yellowtail. Very tasty but did have a fishy taste. Yes it's fish but still. Quite tasty and plentiful. Overall food and vibe was great. The place was definitely lively in the evening. We can finally say we've been and tried some amazing dish. It's a place that worth coming back for more.
