Sonoratown continues to be one of my favorite places for tacos. We are so lucky to have it in Long Beach. They're known for their handmade flour tortillas that have an amazing bite to them. They were just awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand award this week for their excellent, affordable food. One thing that I appreciate about their tacos is that their meats have varied textures. The costilla (rib meat) is a crowd pleaser as you get the taste of the grill/charcoal. They have tripe that is crispy with corn nut texture. Cabeza (face meat) has a stewed texture. Unlike most places in LB, there is two hours free parking conveniently located across the street at the Harvey Milk Community Lot. This is easily one of the best options for tacos in Long Beach and, if you haven't had it yet, then you really should! This is the type of place that we need to support! read more

The tortillas tho.... Have been hearing a ton about this place, so came to give it a try. Interior is super cute with tons of seating. We ordered caramelos with the poblanos inside, as well as their horchata. Tortillas are some of the best I've had. Super soft and flavorful from the grill. The fillings and salsa were good too, but it was really wet, and the bean ratio especially compared to the meat, was a little off. Always am going to want more meat. Horchata was unique since it was coconut based. Overall solid spot with patient staff. Tacos La Rueda is still better, but will be back when in Long Beach. read more

When you get inside it's a place where you order and then find a seat. We got here on a Saturday before noon and it was already packed but no wait to place our order. First of all one of their workers with the mastche and tattoos is so cute which is always a plus for the ambiance. It didn't take long to get our food. About 5 minutes and they brought it out to where we sat since we dined in. First of all! You need to get an aguas fresca. We got the medium for the orange mango and the Jamaica. They are so natural. I'm a huge fan of artificial flavor so this was a huge shock, but it pairs so well with their food. My only regret isn't getting the large. For the food we got the burrito 2.0 asada and the chivichanga chicken. The burrito was great but very heavy on the beans. Make sure you get extra green salsa. It's their best and a perfect balance of salty with a hint of sweet. The red salsa gets spicy. If you can't handle hot Cheetos don't eat it. Now the chivichanga thing was perfect. It's so tiny but the fact it's about $5 was perfect. I have never had something so well priced and portioned before. The way I can describe it if you ever wanted to taste high class Taco Bell that will make you want four more then you need to try it. And I mean this in the best way possible. It was decent nothing that wowed me. Margaritas were decent, not crazy flavorful though. Staff were nice and service was decently quick after placing our order. Tried two different flavors of Margarita A burrito 2.0 with asada And a chicken chivichanga which was kinda small and I probably could've eaten two lol. Not a bad spot and I live close so it wasn't out of the way. Limited parking in the area, there is a lot with free two hour parking close by but during events that is a paid lot so be warned. The interior of the shop was very colorful, had a good amount of seating, and had loud festive music playing. We stopped in for a carne asada burrito and bean and cheese burrito on a week night and it was not busy. It's nice that they have smaller burrito options that are around $5! A coworker and I walked here after an expo at the convention center and it was less than .5 mile. It is super close and we opted to walk since we parked at the convention center. The store is clean and decorated nicely. They had Agua Frescas and I ended up getting the horchata de coco and a carne asada burrito. I liked the grill marks on the tortilla of the burrito. The salsa was inside and not spicy at all. The green salsa on the side was very lime-y, but delicious. The red salsa on the side was more of a pica de gallo. They also gave you a whole grilled green onion. The burrito was not too filling but enough as well. It was a good portion between the meat, cheese, and beans. My coworker and I were silent as we ate. The service was super friendly and they brought our food to us. They also gave us time to look at the menu. I definitely want to come back and try the other items on their menu. read more

I've heard a lot about this spot and I'm so glad I finally got try it! It's a taco joint known for their sonora style tacos that pay homage to the small border town in Mexico the owner is from. Since I was a party of one, I ordered only two tacos (carne asada and chorizo), a carne asada quesadilla, and a mango agua fresca. You order first and then find a place to sit. Then, they'll bring out your order to you. I came on a Frida night around 730pm and it wasn't too packed. The chorizo taco was ok. I wish they had al pastor on the menu. The carne asada taco was much better but the star of the show was definitely the carne asada quesadilla. My friend told me Sonora specializes in beef, so that explains why the carne asada dishes tasted way better! The mango agua fresca was super yummy and refreshing, not too sweet at all. I want to start off by saying really amazing service and super nice vibes inside. I heard about this place through TikTok claiming it's one of the best burritos around. And honestly I was disappointed. I had got the cabeza burrito because it looked really good on TikTok and overall is was pretty mid. Lacking lots of flavor and just not that good, I give it a solid 7.5/10. The horchata is basically a coconut milk with a dash of cinnamon it was okay. The second I walked in and saw a chuckwalla on one of their paintings, I knew they were real ones. And if you're a real one too, you'd know as well. We came here on Friday of ALA and came right before a large group of people came in line. This was around 730 PM. You line up, order, and they take the food to your table. There's table and small wall counter seating. Love the decor that they have there, the information about Sonora, there's a cool magnetic bottle top opener at the fridge, and I like the cute cow statue that they have on the fridge too. For dinner, we got the: 1) Lorenza: -It's a corn tortilla with Monterey Jack cheese, salsa roja, avocado salsa, and cabbage. -It's an open top taco, and it's slightly crispy too, adding a nice jolt of texture. Like everything else in this order, very topped to the brim with protein and other toppings. Make sure not to spill! 2) Burrito 2.0: -Comes with guacamole, Monterey Jack cheese, pinto beans, and chiltepin salsa. -Massive burrito, falling apart while I was eating it since it was so stuffed to the brim and we kept handing it back and forth to each other. Make sure to have lots of napkins handy and not to drop any on yourself! Super filling and definitely can be shared! 3) Spicy Chiltepin Salsa: -So good and unique that you have to get an extra side of it! It's a must and will be my go to here too! -They import the chiles straight from Sonora! That's crazy dedication, It comes in with a strong kick and a lasting slow burn. Delicious. 4) Caramelo: -Flour tortilla, pinto beans, Monterey Jack cheese, avocado salsa, salsa roja, avocado, cabbage. -Comes with a sprig of grilled green onion. It's like a fold over taco, and deliciously stuffed to the edges with protein and other filling. 5) Large Horchata: -Huge cup serving. It's made with coconut milk so it's a nice creamy flavor underneath the sweet cinnamon taste. It's not too sweet which is nice. One of the best horchata that I've had. Not watered down at all. I'd get it again for sure! For the meat, we got all cabeza, which is the braised beef head. It's not my favorite cut of meat, but my boyfriend likes it and since it's the most unique we got it. I think in the future, I would like to try the other meats that they have here too. It's cool that their flour tortillas are made with pork lard, probably adds in lots more flavor too. It can get a bit messy, so watch out if you are in cosplay! I had to run out really fast because my car battery needed to be jumped/replaced in the garage nearby, but they give you aluminum foil and bags to bag your stuff up to go. So that's what we did. Very good burrito (called the burrito 2.0). It's quite thick, and I've pictured a cross-section below. As you can see, there is no rice, so there's an excellent proportion of meat and guacamole along with beans and cheese. It's seasoned well and the meat has great flavor; I've tried both the Costilla and Chorizo, and you can't go wrong with either; the Chorizo is a bit spicy. The grilled exterior makes it very pleasant to chew, the tortilla becomes just soft enough and doesn't feel too doughy. It's a satisfying bite. Takeout on a rainy day in LB! I'm saddened by the quality of my meal. I've been looking forward to their delectable steak tacos; today they were poorly made and with mediocre steak. Smear of guacamole, good amount of salsa, steak was over cooked and over seasoned (meat flavor was different). Friend ordered cabeza taco and tripa taco. Tripa taco was good and cabeza taco was different compared to months back. Smear of guac on one taco and the other had no guac! Chivichanga was just ok...opted for shredded beef and expected a blistering tomato taste but instead we tasted chili beans or whipped beans in a chile sauce? Sonoratown is a Mexican food place known for its homemade tortillas. Came here on a Saturday afternoon and it was pretty busy. Not much of a line, but all the tables were taken and we had 4 people. Upon entering, the line to order forms along the right side of the space leading to the front to place your order. My Mom and I ordered a Chicken Chivichanga and a Beef Burrito 2.0. It took us ~10-15 minutes to find a table, but once we sat down, our food was delivered to us. The tortillas for both items were okay. They were chewy yet doughy and tasted a bit underdone. Not sure if they are supposed to be that way. The beef and chicken were okay flavor-wise. We received salsas on the side for the burrito but not the chivichanga. Overall, giving Sonoratown a 3.5/5. Portions are solid, but the food itself tasted okay. The tortillas are different so would recommend others to try it if they haven't before. I came here based on the other reviews. Here's an honest review. The chicken taco, was a bit peculiar for me. IMO the chicken tasted more like rotisserie chicken than grilled chicken. The quesadilla with asada was super good. It was generous portion and had a lot of cheese. The tortillas are flour and not of maiz like regular taco spots. I will admit I prefer maiz tortillas over flour. (I wish they had the option of maiz.) The watermelon water was also super good. I think it's fresh and was not too sweet and tasted like actual watermelon. The guacamole was reasonably priced and had a bunch of chips with it that were fresh. One of my go to spots! I first tried them at their downtown LA location and loved their food so when they opened up a location in Long Beach, I was over the moon. I lived in Long Beach up until this summer so it was close by and our go to spot when meeting up with friends or a quick date night. Their food is always delicious and their team is always on it, even when it's super busy. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu but my favorite is the caramelo with a chivi or a caramelo with a cheese quesadilla and taco with a coconut horchata. Their guacamole salsa is my favorite but I ask for extra of the green and red to add more as needed. This is now our go to spot when we are visiting Southern California and the consistency in quality is always there. It always makes us happy when we do because for a split second it feels like we haven't left and we are just down the street getting a bite to eat at one of our favorite restaurants. read more

Stopped by last night around 8ish, to meet up with some friends and initially ordered two tacos asada. They were so good, I ended up ordering two more! This restaurant is very busy, well staffed, & clean. The tortilla is not your traditional corn tortilla, it's a soft flour tortilla, and though it's thin; it holds everything together very well. Sonoratown is located in downtown Long Beach amongst a Main Street of bars and restaurants so there's a lively crowd. While seated with my friends an inebriated man opened the door and starts yelling at everyone... "Be happy..." he dropped a few dimes about enjoying life or what not. At first I thought there was some sort of random emergency. I did however notice he was wearing a Dave Chapelle shirt of the notorious Tyronne Bigums. And of course I took the opportunity to yell back.. "I like your shirt!" He then Shouted back, "Be quiet.." something about me being loud. You can't customize the chivichangas, it's premade. Friends felt like it was just like a microwavable burrito. -Taco meats: Cabeza is good (our fav out of everything). Thought the place inside was very inviting, clean, with nice decor and colors. The staff was was super friendly and they even brought the food to our table even though we ordered at the front. We also ordered this super strong and small frozen margaritas. We liked them a lot. The burritos to me were good for sure, but I've had much better at local taquerias or food trucks. This is a fairly small establishment with not a lot of seating or a big menu. There are only 5 types of meat and a few options for what to order. We got 2 burritos, one with chicken one steak. The salsa that originally comes on the burrito is spicy, if you don't like spicy get it on the side. I ordered the burrito with the green salsa which was the mild one and it was delicious. Sonoratown always hits. If there were only one place I could recommend to SoCal visitors, it would be Sonoratown. It is consistently delightful, and I find myself still pleasantly surprised by how good it is, even though I've eaten there dozens of times at this point. It is probably my favorite food in all of LA/SoCal. My go to order is a chicken quesadilla, steak taco, and beef chivi. The chicken and steak have such so much great smoky grilled flavor. The thin flour tortillas are the perfect vehicle for the meats and salsa. The salsas have awesome flavor with a nice kick to them. The beef chivis sort of remind me of a fancy microwaved frozen burrito, but I mean that in the best way possible. I also like that they have grilled scallions on the side that I usually add to the food. This location is really nice, and much more spacious than the original DTLA or midtown locations. My partner and I love Sonoratown so much that once a week we ask each other what we would like to go for dinner, we go "tacos? Sonoratown?".. which is why we here once a week. Located in downtown Long Beach, there is free short term street parking but also free 2 hours in the structure across the way. The interior is super cute with vibrant colors and checkered flooring. You order at the counter and food is brought out to you. I love every item here but my to-go order has recently been: tripa tacos and costilla lorenza, the perfect amount of food for me. I love the crispy beef intestines. Sometimes when I feel like something super savory and fatty, I'll get the cabeza instead. We always get an agua fresca here, my favorite being the pepino con limon that was around earlier in the year, but the current melon is the best.. they're all good though! Really depends on your preference. We also came for Long Beach Food Scene Week and the TORTA is AMAZING - please, we beg, bring this and put it on the permanent meu. If not, it needs to come back around again! The bread is so soft and the perfect amount of sweet with the sauce, avocado, lettuce, and meat. We came back twice for this within a week because it was just that good. The party trays here are also perfect for get togethers, we've been bringing the chivichanga trays to potlucks and BBQs and they're a hit! We were told that Sonoratown is open 365 days a year so this is the perfect place to pick up any last minute holiday get together items. Beware: the red sauce is SO SPICY! Delicious, but spicy. I usually ask for it on the side because my spice tolerance is low unfortunately and my partner and some friends will take mine and slather it on their food. Driving into or out of Long Beach, there's a high chance you see an extremely large billboard advertising Sonoratown. This combined with the fact that their main location is in West LA is actually a kind of negative ominous sign for the restaurant - which turned out not to be true at all! The food was actually excellent and reasonably priced! As a quick introduction, if their name doesn't make it obvious, their schtick is Sonoran (as in the State of Sonora in Mexico) food. It's somewhat different from most Mexican-American food and the place you most often see it is actually in Arizona, because the closest beach to Phoenix, Arizona is Puerto Penasco, Sonora and thus there's a permanent flow of Arizonans who get to enjoy Sonoran food. We ordered basically one of everything, the Burrito 2.0 ($12.5), the Lorenza taco ($5), and the Caramelo taco ($8.5). You may ask - why are they selling a $5 and $8 taco? Well it's simple - the tacos are very large! The Lorenza taco is a large, crispy corn tortilla with meats and veggies and salsa all over it. Fairly large. Like a better version of a tostada. The Caramelo taco is my favorite - it's a truly massive open-faced taco. It's basically if someone turned a quesadilla into a taco (a tremendously good idea). The meats were generous and it was intensely filling. The burrito 2.0 I think is their own creation - it has the similar taste profile as the Sonoran tacos, but it's in burrito format. Pretty cool and the easiest item to eat (the others a bit messy). Also very filling. I think one of the defining traits of Sonoran food is the grilled meats and all of the dishes were extremely generous with their meat portions. With the other toppings being vegetables and salsa, I'd also recommend this place to anyone who wants a protein heavy meal. I note that I didn't eat anything that day until 9 PM - and one burrito + two tacos was enough to fill up 2 adults who had to bring back lots of left-overs (half the burrito). I liked the meat a lot, but that's also because I made sure to order the meat everyone recommends, their cabeza. I've heard of people having less than stellar experiences with their steak, which I am not sympathetic to because that is a problem that can be fixed by ordering the cabeza (which is also beef). They also advertise their chiltepin salsa, which I think costs an extra $.50. It is very important that you spend the extra 50 cents, unless you hate spicy food, because it's one of the most flavorful salsas I have ever had. Super smoky, a bit sweet, with a powerful heat kick that disappears pretty quickly so you can enjoy the flavor of the food and chilis as well. Also, they have $8 iced margaritas which are pretty good. I had a hibiscus flavor which was unique and went down very easily. Strongly recommended as well. I'm also just going to be real with you - Downtown Long Beach doesn't have that much great stuff. If you are trapped in DTLB like I was for Anime Los Angeles, this honestly might be the best place to eat. read more
