It's been years since I've dined at Panxa Cocina.. and after today's experience, I greatly regret my time away. We had family in town and needed a last minute reservation on a Sunday for 12 people. The qualifications: AC and delicious food. Panxa Cocina fit all of the above and the entire squad left the restaurant raving about their experience. Our crew shared a bit of everything fried squash, queso, ceviche, enchiladas, and their verde chilaquiles with over easy eggs and chicken. Each of these items were delicious, but I'd return for the ceviche and chilaquiles. The ceviche was a delicious mix of sweet and salty. Their tortilla chips are made fresh in-house and paired perfectly with the fresh cut fish. I was also impressed by their cocktails. With family in town, we visited a number of fan-favorite restaurants across the coastline. Panxa stole the show for best mixed drink: the watermelon margarita. Tried Panxa in Long Beach for Mother's Day and had a decent brunch. Luckily we made a reservation since it was pretty busy. Service was a miss -- we never had a dedicated server so they didn't check in as often. For the food, we tried the stacked enchiladas and posole. I ordered my enchiladas with both roja and verde sauces, or Christmas style. Flavors were good but not memorable. The dish itself was on the smaller side for the price. Decided to do a little getaway to Long Beach for my birthday and ended up trying this new Mexican fusion brunch spot near the beach; and honestly, it was such a vibe. I love the whole concept and atmosphere; it just felt like the perfect birthday brunch setting. I was especially pressed (in the best way) that they had a dog menu, so of course we had to bring our dog, Shadow, to enjoy it with us; which made the experience even more fun and unique. I can't lie. This place is a block from my house. And it is so convenient. I go here all the time. But even if it was not so convenient, I'd still make the trip. They have things on the menu I love. And I like that they try to add new ones, but I'm being honest, I love the things I have had for years, and are very sad when they are gone. But you will have to believe me about this. I've been here many times over the years and have not been disappointed. Even when busy, the staff is always attentive, which I appreciate. I actually came here with my brother on Thanksgiving as well after travel plans were cancelled. We actually came here because they didn't have a prefix holiday menu only and we were able to order from the regular menu as well. We both tried dishes we had not previously, and thoroughly enjoyed everything, including our cocktails. With so many restaurants closing in Long Beach, I'm glad Panxa is still here. read more

Ok....First time here, I suggested meeting a friend for dinner on a Thursday evening around 5:30. It wasn't too crowded, and we chose to sit in the bar area at a table rather than the main family dining section. Cute place with great ambiance. Throughout the evening, we had two different servers--probably because the dining room wasn't as busy, while the bar area picked up as the night went on. We ordered from both the happy hour menu and the regular menu: stacked enchiladas stuffed with shredded short rib, served Christmas style with both red and green sauce; jalapeño cornbread with a pool of melted butter on top; and the "Asada Fries" from the happy hour menu, which are really more like nachos. Funny enough, they don't actually come with asada--that's extra--so don't assume "asada" fries means meat! My favorite of the three was definitely the jalapeño cornbread--so flavorful and delicious. The stacked enchiladas were my second favorite: rich because of the short rib, but very tasty. The nachos were good as well. Service was a bit slow, likely because they only had two servers and the place got busier as the evening went on. It took a while to place orders and get a server's attention. After waiting about 30 minutes after our entrees, we were finally able to order dessert. We chose the sopapillas, which I've had many times before since I grew up in Arizona where they're a staple. These were prepared more like beignets--dusted with powdered sugar. Four came with the order. Two were amazing: light, fluffy, and not greasy at all. My friend had never had one before and really enjoyed them. Unfortunately, the other two were hard and had grease trapped inside, so when you bit into them, grease poured out. Definitely a turnoff, and we left half the dessert untouched. To be fair, our server removed the dessert from our bill, which we appreciated. Overall, I'd recommend this place for its unique flavors. Went out with some friends and this was my first time at Panxa Cocina. Let me start with parking. Street parking only. There is a parking lot attached to restaurant and that is permit parking only, subject to tow. Inside is nicely decorated. There is a separate seating area by the bar that has TVs to watch sporting events. The drinks were really good. Had Here we go aGin and an old fashioned. Preferred the Gin. Kudos to Panxa for excellent service in that regard, and our waitress was also very attentive and friendly. Street parking only. Once you step in, the restaurant is fairly large and beautifully decorated. The menu is diverse and prices on the slightly higher end, though portions are generous and the presentation of dishes are top notch. I ordered the octopus ceviche and posole, which were both phenomenal. The posole was a bit spicy and smokey in flavor, different than the Mexican pozoles I am more accustomed to, and was served with scrumptious fry bread. They even serve the good kind of totopos (tortilla chips)! I also got to taste some of the mole enchiladas, which while a tad sweet for me was also tasty. Panxa Cocina is one of Belmont Heights best kept secrets! I went here for date night and was pleasantly surprised. The ambiance was very nice it has a nicely lit small dining room with Mexican murals and art which allows for a beautifully decorated dining experience but we opted for the bar area which had mood lighting, high top tables and plenty of seats at the bar, TVs, and great music. The food was EXCELLENT we had the Stacked Short Rib Christmas Enchiladas, the Flaquita margarita pitcher and the "New Mexican" Pizza. An amazing rendition of the classic Mexican dish and the Taco Bell fan favorite. The meat was perfectly cooked and melted in your mouth. The Chimayo red chili and hatch green chili complemented the dishes perfectly. The "New Mexican" pizza was packed with flavor and all the ingredients combined to make a truly excellent dish. The margarita was sweet but not overpowering and you can taste the spirit, they don't use triple sec, syrups, or liqueurs here which really makes all the flavors shine and not get drowned out by sugar. Overall a great classic margarita. The service was quick and fast. We went at about 8pm near closing time and we were sat instantly and ordered shortly thereafter. Our server constantly refreshed drinks and checked in. She personalized my visit after I told her it was my first time and explained the menu in detail telling us the history behind the restaurant and also checked back after we preferred to see how we were liking it . Hmm I got here for Happy Hour, and I still don't think it was entirely worth it.  I got the margapeno, watermelon basil margarita, ceviche, chicken tacos, and duck chilaquiles. Drinks were pretty good, and $2 off for Happy Hour. They weren't too sweet, and had good, fun flavors.  The ceviche was pretty mediocre with no strong flavors in acid or spice. The best part was definitely the tortilla chips. This also meant that the duck chilaquiles were my favorite. They were very flavorful, and the chips maintained a bit of their crunch, even doused in sauce. The duck was also nicely cooked and tender. The tacos were lackluster and overpriced. I think there are plenty of good Mexican restaurants in Long Beach, and even better "upscale" Mexican restaurants. I don't think Panxa is a must visit, unfortunately. read more

Came in right before happy hour ended at 6pm on a Friday so we ordered the chicken tinga chimichanga and the short rib taquitos. Both very tasty. For the mains we ordered steak & frites and the stacked enchiladas with short rib and Christmas style. It took quite a while to come out. The fries with the steak were interesting it was like they were air fried because they were fully crunchy and airy. Overall the inside had nice decor and the workers were kind. Revisits to a once respected place have revealed some missteps and slight disappointments. Possibly, with all the 5 Star reviews, there are hits and misses. Unfortunately, a most recent revisit proved to be just misses. Strictly speaking, the experience here is from their dinner menu. Overall, the feeling of underwhelming comes to mind. Enchiladas should be quite a star of the show for a Latino-inspired restaurant. The chicken was overcooked, dry, and a bit underseasoned, while the mole sauce was overly sweet and lackluster. An order of sea bass was also overcooked, and the combination of couscous and squash on top of a yogurt sauce tasted more Mediterranean than anything else. The hatch chilli described on the menu that was incorporated into the yogurt sauce was so light, it was non-existent. Mexican/Latin cooking is about bold flavors, and the fusion aspect seems not to even give a hint. Other New Mexico favorites on the menu continued the trend of too subtle flavors and textures. Visits from years past certainly showed that there has been a change. Pricing updates are also a dampener on dinner. Some other items on their menu continue to be good, but it was difficult to feel that some things were missing compared to past visits. The consistency is lacking here. Drinks are creative, but on one evening, the margaritas were a bit light on their feet and especially at Happy Hour. The staff continue to be friendly and attentive. read more

These are dishes (Navajo Taco, Frito Pie, Posole) and ingredients (Hatch, Chimayó, Blue Corn) unique to the state itself. This is one of a handful of New Mexico restaurants in Southern California. We were seated on the patio immediately and Destiny was very attentive during the meal. We had the Stacked Enchiladas with Egg and Short Rib and The Green Chile Panxa Burger. What we ordered from the HAPPY HOUR menu: ELOTE TEMPURA BALLS (Sweet corn, cotija, Morita, lime, aioli, paprika) - My favorite item on the happy hour menu. If you are looking for something sweet, these fried balls will DELIGHTFULLY melt in your mouth. CHICKEN CHIMICHANGA (Shredded chicken, cheese, pico hatch chili, Chimayo, chili, crema) - SUPERB mini fried burrito with fantastic hatch chili sauce smothered all over the plate that makes your mouth dance with each bite. SHORT RIB TAQUITOS (3) (short rib, shredded lettuce, pico, crema, hatch, and Chimayo chile)--This item is not about the meat but all about the sauce. Panxa Cocina specailizes in new Mexican cuisine which includes chilaquiles, quiches, eggs benedicts, and even burgers. Their foods are pretty and and always beautifully presented. They also have an awesome drink menu with margaritas and cocktails. The last time I came here I got their chilaquiles which came with eggs cooked any way you like. I thought it was pretty good. I also had a smokey mango margarita which was enjoyable. The inside of this place is cute and casual. It's a great spot to meet up with friends or family and hang out.
