Great food, the people was very friendly. Food came on time. Order the vegetables omelette it was delicious. Went back the next weekend.

It's places like this that will ensure I give up desserts. With no apologies to Long Island, I'm always suspicious of menus that have pictures describing the food. Now, I can understand their need to explain less popular (in the US) Turkish desserts like Tulumba, or a Kemal Pasha but not so much for chocolate or strawberry ice cream...... what's amusing is that the online menu lacks pictures for the Turkish desserts, but has those for "Italian" ones. Thankfully, the printed menus make no such omission. Conceptually, this seems like a great idea: water-front out door seating, Russian/Italian and Turkish desserts (and calorie bombs like the Kumpir: baked potato stuffed with cheese and x ,000 calories), large seating area... but the execution is completely gutted by excessive sugar in the Turkish desserts, and apathetic service. All of the desserts I tried: Pistachio Baklava, Fig dessert, Kemal Pasha (distant cousin of the Indian/Pakistani: Gulab Jamun) - were way way too sweet and drenched in syrup. I would instead recommend the Russian desserts like the Smetannik cake, or the gelato based desserts (Bombas, Coppas...) I'm not usually one to blast service, but it's featured in all the reviews for a reason. I had enough time available waiting for a server, on two separate occasions, to debate whether these folks were (a) under-compensated; (b) undergoing medical complications; (c) facing immigration process delays; (d) the inadequately trained cast of a foreign reality show: Swap my Career. The most redeeming aspect of my experience was the Cappuccino... yet, I waited 15 minutes to catch the eyes of any of the dozen odd servers for another one, only to give up and instead stand up to ask for the bill. I bear no malice to anyone (least of all towards a dessert focused cafe!!), but the owner(s) should worry that these clowns will drive away future business... read more

this is my second review of the place. I won't repeat anything I wrote in the first review. I wish I could give this place zero stars. I went again this past weekend. the service was too horrible. my food came before my water. Water was never refilled. My waitress never came by after we got everything to ask if we needed anything. Waited too long for the waitress to look at me so that i could wave her for the check. She might as well have forgotten about my presence, and that is true of the entire experience. I had to watch as half a dozen waitresses were congregated near the register and NONE looked in my direction. What's to stop me from walking out without paying? That's what I should have done. C'mon guys, organize your waiting team better. read more

Living in Long Island, I literally drive over an hour just to go eat Kumpir at Masal Cafe. The setting of the restaurant is very cozy and the staff is very friendly. In the warmer weather, they have outdoor seating which is absolutely incredible because you have a nice view of the bay. They also have a huge variety of desserts which is great!! read more

So once i walked into this place its pretty much Eye Candy. Everything looks so delicious and i was told it really was. I may not have the same taste as everyone else!. After a horrible dinner my best friend took me here to get some dessert. Unfortunately i'm lactose so most of the dessert they have was full of dairy except for the fruits which defeat the purpose of getting fruit from this place. I decided to take a chance an purchase a Moose dessert that was shaped like a Triangle.. While i was waiting one of the Workers was talking to a beautiful blond girl and most not notice i was behind him because he stepped on my foot so hard to this day it is still black and blue. I screamed so loud and almost cried i swear to everyone i love i almost slapped the crap out this guy... He apologize and instead of offering me ice for my food him and all his coworkers laughed.. I took my dessert home so i can put ice on my foot and enjoy a good movie while eating my Moose dessert, once i took one bite it wasn't my cup of tea. personally didn't enjoy it but i would try again just incase it was just a bad day for me. read more

Been here twice and I'm a fan. Authentic turkish coffee and tea. Prices are cheap- my boyfriend and I had 2 coffees, 2 teas, and split a dessert and the bill was less than $20. The place is spacious and service was actually really accommodating. My only gripe is that the seating area to bathroom ratio is awfully low thus one star off. The food is great but I can honestly say that the customer service is absolutely awful. The waitress/waiter is never around when you need them. You will spend the majority of your time at Masal trying to hunt your waitress down to take your order or to bring you the check. The baked potato is to die for!! read more

They have a great selection of teas and various tasty desserts. They serve amazing cappuccino and Turkish coffee. The ambiance makes it one of a kind. There are all these low embroidered couches, kinda freaked me out at first, but then I sorta liked it. I think the place is kind of old looking, but maybe they can re do the floors or something, they look dirty and old. They always have European soccer on, which of course is great! I come here all the way from Queens and Manhattan. Mostly for their Turkish breakfast. The cheese assorti, 2 kinds of jam, honey, butter, olives, salad, a glass of tea, bread under 20 bucks. And 2 people can share it easily. Everyone who knows what a treasure freshly brewed Turkish tea is should pay a visit to this cute tea house. Oh I also love their kumpir (stuffed potato with corn, green pea, sausage, carrot, olives and topped with mayo and kerchup) and yengen sandwich. Also a fan of their desserts as well. I've always passed this place by, but never checked it out until Saturday night, with my friends that didnt want to go home. It's a very relaxed place. It isnt anything fancy, just a place that has nice decour, and very interesting cups- love them. Pot of tea is $12, cakes go for $12. I noticed others eating food, so they have that as well. I would say this is a place to go on a rainy day or somewhere where you want to catch up with friends. read more

Visited Masal during lunch time with a friend and her babies. Loved that they had a huge playground upstairs, saved us from having fussy kids at the table :p. We ordered kumpir (never saw a potato that large), pasta in cream tomato sauce w/grilled chicken (that sauce was heavenly) and a shepherd salad to pretend that we were healthy (fresh, and not wilted). The kids had fries that were seasoned and crunchy. Would definitely return, as it is so kid-friendly. read more

When the sun is out, Masal is a great place to sit outside and people watch and look at the water. During more the more chilly days of the year, its nice to sink into a cozy couch inside and have some tea. Breakfast and lunch here is tasty, IF your food arrives. Like other reviewers, I have to say the service here is pretty awful. There doesnt seem to be any organization, no bussers, and the waiters appear to be too overwhelmed to remember that you asked for a glass of water, or in my case, that you ordered a vegetable omelet, even after you flag them down and remind them. Today I gave up after over and hour of waiting for my omelet when everyone else's food had arrived and been eaten. I left sans omelet. If you do give Masal a try, the stuffed baked potato is tasty as hell. The combination of olives, corn, dressings, and whatever else they stuff into that potato makes for some great eating. The turkish omelet is also great, although it could be a little bit bigger, and come with a side (potatoes, bread, ?). Bottom line: If you come here and you're food is taking awhile, take action! Don't assume its on its way, you have to be prepared to be aggressive at this place. read more

I would give more stars but every single time I have gone here, the service was atrocious. I am a generous tipper but I have found myself leaving this cafe leaving as little as $1 or even, in the worst cases, nothing more than the food cost. The food, drinks, and desserts are usually very good so it's a shame that the people behind Masal won't hire competent workers. I always hope I'll be proven wrong whenever I come by, but I am always disappointed. It should not take 15 minutes for the check to come and it should not take an additional 20 minutes for the workers to remember to charge it and bring it back. It doesn't take an astrophysicist to remember to bring a glass of water after writing it down on the order paper, but even this is too much for the workers at Masal. Perhaps I would be more apologetic if the waiters acknowledged their faults and apologized for their neglect and appallingly slow service. Self awareness, however, is another trait the staff is horribly lacking. read more

The weather was amazing and we LOVED the outdoor seating. Food: Overall, the food was quite good. Everything was fresh and flavorful. We had the sheperd's salad which was a great portion of salad with a nice amount of cheese on top (I hate it when restaurants skimp on the cheese and Masal certainly didn't) We also enjoyed the kumpir which was great to try, it was a HUGE baked potato stuffed with cheese, Russian olive salad, olives, and sausage. We also had the manti which were GREAT. Amazing small bites of lamb in a delicate dough and swimming in a delicious sauce. LOVED it. Great meal followed by some Turkish tea. Service: Service was good especially when you take into account that it was a o busy day when everyone wanted to sit outside. I used to be a fan because for the most part their food was pretty good.. but oh boy there service is horrible they move so slow and with no purpose. My friends have voiced to me that sitting outside there is a nightmare because they hardly check on you and when you need the check you will be waiting When we came it says wait to be seated okay we wait.. assuming they have a hostess o guess they don't and whoever notices you seats you.. they seat us and don't bring us menus after a couple of minutes it's a miracle the menus appear.. I witness tables next to us being told by a server that she will not be serving them but she doesn't even have the decency to send someone over to take their order and seeing that for me was like wtf.. Getting the check when thought we were sitting inside another struggle.. I see what looked like managers chilling in the corner and then they noticed people getting pissed and just going to register to pay check and they stepped in what they stepped in just to say they will bring you check/. No apologies no nothing and it wasn't even packed.. so won't be back again not worth it ! read more

Sunday was my first time here for brunch. We ordered the baked potato and sherpereds pie, toast, iced tea and an hot tea for our meal and it was delicious. The service was great. I hope I'm not writing in vain here. After 3+ years of shunning this place, my partner and I ventured here for a Turkish breakfast. Our food was delivered in sanitary conditions by our amazing waiter (wish I caught his name!) who accommodated our requests. Food was good, came out in a timely fashion- was tasty too! The waitstaff (other than our waiter) could use training on courtesy, etiquette, and food/ plate handling. The clientele could too, but that's asking for too much. Let's start off with THE SERVICE IS HORRENDOUS. Came here to get brunch with my sister and friend. To get someone to just come and take our order is like a chore to the servers here. Within the hour we were ignored, not checked up on , and overall didn't receive any service. After trying to get the attention of the servers several times they continued to ignore us and when we finally had the chance to get one to come, they gave us an attitude and got our order wrong. They didn't listen to a word we said and walked away from us. I would hope that the owners of this place would take this review into consideration about their servers because they will be the reason that they will lose business. Food is overall good. I've been coming to Masal for years. Today, I ordered fresh orange juice and when it came I saw small fly in it. I called waiter back and he told me with a big smile that it's not a fly it's part of the seed and that he thought the same before he brought it to me. Being nice I agreed and thought maybe he is right. Fast forward I finished my drink and put this "part of the seed" on the napkin. Once it dried out I looked at it again and saw a fly! Small fly... maybe he thought I am idiot or maybe he really thought it was part of the seed. I had to update to 1 star. I wish I could give - 5. They have the worst service I ever encountered. I went here with my friend to have some desserts and they guy never checked on us...when I called him and asked for another tea, he left and never came back. I had to call him again for a check and when I told him about the tea his reaction was like I never mentioned it. We asked for a check and had to wait for it forever...and guess what? I decided to visit this place because of the recommendation given to me by my girlfriend. I didn't regret it. The place is know for their baked stuffed potato and it is honestly AMAZING! It tastes like heaven. It is perfectly made. With a perfect combination of warm stuffed potato and other ingredients such as olives, this product on their menu is classified to be the best that they have. I defiantly recommend visiting the place to try it :) You can also sit outside during good weather with the bay breeze in front of you.. Defiantly a nice place! This is my go to dessert spot/cafe. I use to only come here for dessert before but after trying some of the entrees, I fell in love. I now come here a lot more. I have lived in the area for over 15 years and have never been to this place until last night when a girlfriend of mine wanted to go to chat in a low profile place. The atmosphere and decor was very comfortable. The place looks as if it has been there for years and was never remodeled. But even though the chairs were old, they were very comfortable. I literally felt as if I was sitting in my living room having tea with a friend. I like it when a place makes me forget about time and this place succeeded in that. We ordered a pitcher of green tea and mango sorbet and everything was delicious. I was skeptical about ordering the sorbet at first because I was afraid is was going to be a block of ice with mango flavor but to my surprise it was delicious. It was the food and the atmosphere that earned this place three stars. If only the service was as good as everything else was, then this place would have gotten a full five. We had to wait at least 30 min before a server came by and that was only because I screamed out "EXCUSE ME". This makes me wonder how much longer would we have stayed in our seats without anything if I wouldn't have taken initiative to call a waiter over. But the waiter was nice. I will come back here the next time i need to get away from things and just hang out with a friend, hopefully next time my rating will go up. read more
