Tried Masala Bites for takeout and let me just say... I was 100% influenced by the buy-one-get-one garlic naan deal that was going on. No regrets there -- that naan understood the assignment. When I try a new Indian spot, I always go with butter chicken as my baseline. I ordered mine "medium hot" because I like spice, but I like flavor more than I like questioning my life choices while sweating through dinner. The flavor was great, portion of rice was HUGE (like... rice for days), but the spice level? Let's just say it politely waved at me from across the room. Next time, we're going full "Indian hot." My friend got the chicken tikka amritsari, which came in one of those elite takeout containers with the little compartments -- we love organization. It looked amazing: chicken, veggies, sauce, the whole situation. He ordered "Indian hot" and... same story. Delicious, but not exactly setting off the fire alarm. We came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We got the 'brunch' special that came with a starter and main dish for $22. I ordered mango shrimp and butter chicken and my husband ordered bhel chaat and chicken tikka. Both dishes came with naan, we got the garlic and the cheesy garlic one. The food was really good and had great flavor. Chicken was not dry and cooked nicely. The naan was sooo good and you could tell it was freshly made. The restaurant was not super busy but worth mentioning our server was very attentive either way. They had nice music playing and we liked the decor inside. We love this authentic, spice-forward (if you want), Indian restaurant. Even though I only visit Virginia Beach once or twice a year to visit family, we always try and fit in a trip to Masala Bites. Tonight we ate the gobhi Manchurian, fried cauliflower in a tomato based sauce, bainghan-tofu curry, lamb vindaloo, saag paneer, and naan. All delicious, all distinct, fresh flavors. My family and I absolutely LOVE Indian food! So when on vacation in Virginia Beach we searched for a place that could satisfy our craving and Masala Bites popped up on google. Based on all of the highly recommended reviews, we decided to give them a try. Surprisingly, the restaurant was packed for it being a weekday. They had a large party too so I think that didn't really help with the wait times. We were seated right away but after that the service really went downhill. The waitress took a while to come by and get our order, after that she really didn't check in on us at all. It's really the food that saved them from getting a lower rating! My husband and I got their Pavbhaji Spiced Samosa for appetizer and their Chicken Curry with Garlic Naan for our main dish. Everything was delicious! The curry was a tad bit spicy but we did order it medium, so if you like a lot of spice then get it that way! Other than that I'm sure mild would have sufficed. Their samosas were perfectly seasoned and the filling was just the right amount. The garlic naan was the perfect pairing with their curry dish also. The only downside was that the service wasn't very good and the food took quite a while to come out. But I enjoyed the food! Hopefully they can increase their staff so customers aren't waiting for long periods of time. 3 stars for delicious Indian food! read more

My entre, a delicious mild curry in a coconut sauce was perfectly prepared and plaTed to go. it arrived piping hot in an elegant reusable cloth bag, with enough left over for a second meal-- a very generous serving of basmati rice over the right amount of protein and gently steamed vegetables Sir and Madame Chef I appreciate generosity and elegance in the kitchen. I'm looking forward to visiting what I've read is also a lovely dining in space. An Uber driver from Morocco first told me about this place and she did not exaggerate the quality of the food. I went here because of India Fest and honestly I'm pretty impressed about the food! The vibe is also nice, with the servers showing really fast service. I had the Paneer Patia, the goat curry and garlic naan- all were super great! I thought the 3/5 spice was not too bad, with the right amount of sweat when you eat it. I was craving Indian cuisine {but really, when am I not?}, so I went here for lunch with a Yelp Elite buddy to this elegant restaurant before heading to the airport to fly home to NYC. The interior is beautiful with refined colors of silver blue, white, gold, and grey. The ambiance was peaceful and inviting. I decided to go all out and ordered a drink, appetizer, as well as the lunch special. I normally get the Mango Lassi, but went for the Masala Bites Cardamom Tea, because I thought it would be authentic and special. The cardamom tea was served in a little white tea cup and a perfect, clear amber color. It was quite fragrant with true cardamom taste. For the appetizer, I chose the Chili Mili Shrimp, which wasn't what I expected it to be. The description mentioned crispy shrimp bites, and it definitely wasn't crispy shrimp. It was pan fried shrimp cooked in zesty soy masala, with green / red peppers, and scallions. The dish was satisfyingly saucy, with bold flavors and slightly spicy. The shrimp was tender and there were many of them. The peppers were nicely crunchy and plentiful as well. My friend got the samosas, so I was able to try one. They were really tasty! They were filled with Bombay-spiced potatoes, carrots, and peas. There was a good mix of each vegetable and the outer shell was delightfully crispy and light. The lunch special came with either soup of the day or salad. When I heard that it was lentil soup, I asked for that, but I wasn't happy with it. There were no actual lentils inside and it was a weird yellow color. I could only have 2 spoonfuls. I was much more pleased with the entree, which was garlic-peppercorn salmon, which was served on top of broccoli, carrots, zucchini, cauliflower, and asparagus. This also came with really yummy sauce, naan (I asked for garlic naan), and rice. The salmon was perfectly well seasoned, amazingly succulent, and flaked gracefully. The strong pepper and garlic flavor of the salmon mingled well with the savory sauce, but it didn't even need it. I also enjoyed the lovely medley of vegetables, which were cooked at just the right consistency and had a great combination of spices. The garlic naan was pretty good, with garlic pieces and green herbs on top. It was also thin, while still being fluffy. Like a spicy stir fry rather than a wet curry. Great the next day too. Garlic naan buttery and fresh, Menu had several seafood options as well. We tried curry with crab for the first time also. Crab held up well but flavor was over powered (as expected) by the very creamy tomatoes curry. It was so rich and creamy. Service was attentive and warm. Atmosphere was more family to fine dining. I always come here for their chicken Tikki Masala, Garlic Naan and mango Lassi. I tried other things but I wasn't a fan of anything other than what I listed on top, that's why I had to take 1 star off. The goods: Chicken Tikki Masala is rich and full of flavor. You'll pick from the scale of 0-5 with the spiciness, and I always pick 3. 2 is nothing to me but 3 is a little too spicy, but that's the fun ya know? You can taste the spices and it's good pairing with rice(that comes with it) and garlic naan(charge separate). The chicken is a little tough but I cut them into smaller slices so it's not a big deal. Beware if you can't eat spicy food because even if you ask for 0 spicy (which my bf did), it will still be a little spicy. Mango Lassi is a mango flavored yogurt. It is very refreshing and thicc. It is sweet and tangy so ut is perfect to wash down all the spiciness that you just had. And the garlic naan is delicious! The garlic on top of the naan is fresh, the bread is firm and has a roasty flavor, kinda like a pizza dough. I can eat that like a snack and you can dip it into your masala or curry. The bad: So far other than masala I've tried curry and butter chicken, and that's enough for me to know not to order food other than Tikki Masala. Both the sauce of curry and butter chicken are watery and bland. My bf always get the Tikki Masala so when I ordered these other dishes I compare mines with his, and I could already see the texture looked different. The butter chicken was worst because I can see clear water when I put the sauce on my plate. A little tip is that they do lunch from Monday to Friday and the Masala and other curry dishes are cheaper and they come with rice AND naan. read more
