Heirloom is one of the 757s shining gems of restaurants. You get a fine dining style meal and service, but in a mostly casual setting. The servers and staff are observant and focused on small details that really set Heirloom apart. I especially love the part of the dining room filled with lush hanging plants. We visit several times a year and are always impressed by the quality. We always order the She Crab soup and a Wedge Salad as appetizers to share. They are both so good, I'd probably request them as my last meal! The She Crab soup is absolute perfection, creamy and full of lump crab. I will not order She Crab soup anywhere else after trying theirs. The wedge has pickled onions, candied bacon, blue cheese and some kind of marinated or pickled tomato. Paired all together to make the perfect bite. We have tried a lot of the menu, it does rotate around seasonally, but there are some items that are consistent. The burger was absolutely decadent but not overwhelming. I usually order the "secret", not so secret Shrimp dinner that's not on the menu anymore. You get 6 of their amazing fried shrimp, a magical dipping sauce (cant' describe it!), and 2 sides. (see what's their seasonal sides!) Wow! Delicious meal and excellent service! Heirloom has a fantastic happy hour, with specials available at both the bar and tables, which is especially nice if you're dining with a larger group. The service was attentive and friendly throughout our meal. The cocktails were well-made and perfectly balanced. We enjoyed everything we ordered, especially the Old Fashioned, the dirty Hendrick's martini (shaken with a twist), and the Painkiller. Our favorite dishes were the fried shrimp, pork belly buns, and fish tacos. The corn ice cream was unique and delicious--it reminded me of Corn Flakes cereal. I was truly looking forward to eating at Heirloom having seen it on a number of top restaurant lists. Drove the 30 minutes south of Virginia Beach for a special family meal. Unfortunately extremely disappointing customer service ruined the entire experience. An interaction with a manager was handled so rudely and confrontationally that our entire table of four lost our appetites and decided to leave in the middle of dinner. What was even more disappointing was what happened afterward: nothing. We explained the situation to our waiter and specifically expressed our disbelief that no one more senior had come over to address it. The restaurant was not particularly busy at the time and both the owner and head chef were in the building, yet no one came over to apologize, ask what happened, or make any attempt to salvage the experience. Mistakes and misunderstandings happen. Good hospitality is about how you handle them. Heirloom had every opportunity to turn around a bad interaction and instead simply let four unhappy customers walk out the door. Very poor customer service and an extremely disappointing experience. This place is so cute! We sat by the bar but it looked like if we had made a reservation we could've requested another area. We started off with she crab soup & the shrimp! The soup was great. The shrimp were huge! Glad we on it got 6. I enjoyed the breading but it lacked seasoning & the sauce that came with it was pretty bland as well. For entrees my husband got the chicken & just kept raving about it! I got the tuna & thought it also lacked seasoning, but ate it with the salad so it wasn't too bad. I ordered the mushroom toast and crabcakes, and both were spot-on -- the mushroom toast was rich, earthy, and perfectly seasoned, while the crabcakes were full of lump crab with barely any filler (a rare find). I tried to book a table for eight at 4:45 p.m. First, when I called, they told me reservations had to be done online. I went online--only to be told I needed to email. After I emailed, asking for 4:45, they flatly said only 4:00 was available. I explained that I could bring six of us first, since my kids get out of school at 4:30 just around the corner. They said no--they insist the entire party is present. To top it off, they demanded a credit card authorization and threatened a $25 per-person no-show fee. This restaurant clearly doesn't care about convenience or its customers. If your plans don't fit their exact mold, don't even bother. I've never felt so unwelcome before even stepping inside. They give you a nice, small appetizer after being seated that was really tasty. I ordered the the Oysters Rockefeller, as an appetizer. They were predictably delicious. For my main I got the Yellowfin Tuna, which my waitress said was relatively new to the menu. Cooked extremely well and it paired well with the sides it came with. I cleaned my plate! My wife got the She Crab soup app and burger with fries for the main. I, of course, had to taste the burger, and it was a great burger. Cooked to medium, nice and juicy and the spiral fries were amazing. My wife couldn't stop talking about this burger. Their drinks menu was also very good, and they have an extensive bourbon and wine menu. My only critique, is that our drinks should've had big rock ice. The ambience was great, music that was good, not too loud. The place was pretty full, but I didn't really feel it, it still felt intimate. Pricing was very reasonable also. A great night overall. I had booked for my dad and I to have dinner here months in advance when we found out it'd just be the two of us for Christmas. After looking on their website, I noticed they had a happy hour, which I was all for since the prices go way up once it's not. So, I booked us for 4:00, thinking that's still a decent time to eat dinner at. I got a reminder about my table the day before, and confirmed I'm still coming. My dad and I drove over and were one of the first people in the queue. It seemed as though everyone had come to celebrate Christmas. We were quickly seated in a corner, got a four top next to the window. It wasn't much of a view, but it was still nice. They had Christmas decorations all throughout the place, it seemed very modern and clean looking overall. The chairs were soft like velvet, and were a bit rounded too. Very comfy. We looked at the menu, got waters, and decided we'd get a cocktail now and split a bottle later. I got an el diablo, which was quite refreshing. The lime wasn't just a garnish either, after squishing it into the drink, it made it taste more complete. We also got an amuse, which was made from golden beets, it was a puree with a dot of hot sauce (I think) and a leaf of parsley on top. It was quite earthy, and while not my favorite, at least a new flavor I got to experience. I wanted to try their oysters, so we decided to get three of each kind. Three rockefeller and three raw. It also came with some cute little Tabasco bottles you could take home. The raw were my favorite, but their rockefeller were also quite nice. I just enjoyed the raw more since you could taste the oyster better. They're super clean, not like oysters I've had before. The ocean flavor is very muted, I didn't really taste it. I could've ate a whole dozen of them if I weren't planning on eating a big dinner. Afterwards, my dad ordered their wedge salad while I got more raw oysters. While the salad is small, it is so good! It's one of the best salads I've had in a while. I love the big chunks of cheese on top, and the dressing is on the bottom so the lettuce and other toppings stay crisp. As for entrees, I was debating on whether or not to get the catfish or the whole fish. Our waiter was very informative and nice and let us know about the specials and his opinions on the menu before ordering as well as asking if we had any allergies or dietary restrictions at first introductions. I was hesitant about the bones, but he assured me they cut into the fish so that you can scrape away at the meat easily and have little bones. So, I got the red snapper, and was quite excited to try something new. I was also excited for the plantains as they are one of my favorite things that I don't get too often. My dad, on the other hand, got the pasta. Which was much like a carbonara. We then ordered a bottle, and found it quite nice. It was the cheapest cab they had, but it was from California, so I thought it would be nice. It was more smooth than I thought, which I'm not big on smooth, but still good nonetheless. Our food came out not that long after. Both my dad and I were astounded at the fish presentation. It was MASSIVE! The girl who gave us our food asked if I knew how to eat it and I replied I did not exactly. She informed me I started from the back, and with my information from earlier about the knife cuts, it was pretty easy to eat. It definitely gets messy, as you gotta get in there with your hands, so better do this with someone you're comfortable eating around. They fry was perfect, it was crisp and seasoned well, and the inside was tender and flaky. The Asian sauce glazed over it really added a good pop of flavor. The coconut rice was cooked amazing as well, it wasn't mushy or overcooked, it had great coconut taste, and with the fish it was just a great bite. The plantains were so nice as well. The outside was crisp with sugar, and the inside was mushy and sweet. I almost ate all of it, but had to take some rice and plantain for home. They make sure to fix your leftovers for you, so that's pretty neat. After all that, we decided to get something light. So, we got their créme brûlée. It had a light crust, and was really spot on. It was very custardy in consistency, almost like a flan. The top was warm from being toasted while the bottom was cold. You could also see all the vanilla bean granules at the bottom. Very traditional, very well balanced. It may be a simple dessert, but it is still quite lovely when done right. We got the check, paid, got a little brown bag for the wine, and were off. My dad claims it is one of the best fine dining restaurants he's been to. I think it is definitely one of my favorites for sure, and can see myself coming back. Great atmosphere (a bit loud but we are old). Fantastic service. Wife had the crab cakes which were delicious medium sized nothing but crab, would order again. I had the diver scallops with a mushroom risotto. The scallops were seared on one side and lacked any flavor at all, didn't taste any seasoning. The risotto was very good but they had fresh butter beans with very tough skins. I guess the ramps were the dried out leaves and sticks I thought were garnish. Wasn't sure I should eat it. For desert we had the carrot cake which was good and the strawberry ice cream on a waffle. The ice cream wasn't very creamy it actually crumbled when I tried to eat it. Last evening, my friend and I dined here to celebrate her birthday. I went several weeks ago, after not visiting for awhile, mostly because of the distance from my house. Everything started off great, as usual. We had drinks, an appetizer (oysters Rockefeller), entrees, and dessert. I had the Heirloom shrimp, which I absolutely love. My friend has a pasta dish that had blue crab. For dessert, we shared the Key Lime Cheesecake Trifle. The service was a little slow, but we were not in a rush, and they really made sure we had everything we needed. So why 2 STARS? Well, the tasty meals were a lot to finish, so we decided to take them home. The restaurant boxed them up for us, and they wrote on the box which dish was which, so we didn't open them. Well, when I drove back home, I realized I had my friend's leftover pasta, and she had my leftover shrimp and rice. I was super disappointed and immediately sent a message to the restaurant. Today, I called just in case they did not see my message. I explained what happened, and the manager made a note on my profile, so the next time I visit, maybe I would get a little shrimp. That is not acceptable! We paid for meals we fully intended to finish. What about compensation for my friend? I am not happy with this response. We had raw oysters and the seared diver scallops as an appetizer. The oysters were good, although I felt they were very expensive for the quantity compared to every where else we've eaten. The scallops were good and cooked nice, maybe just a few seconds over. The Pickled Mustard Seed that came with it was nice touch and paired nicely with the miso pumpkin puree. Our server Michael was very nice and helpful with our questions we had for the menu and drinks. I got the maple leaf farm duck breast for my entree and ordered it med-rare. It came out severely undercooked, I'm talking blue rare. It was served sliced and cut side up, so how that left the kitchen is beyond me. They had no problem making me a new one, but they just cooked the one they gave me a bit longer. Since it was already sliced, it was not as tender as it should have been. There was a happy hour menu and we took advantage by ordering the shrimp and oysters to go along with our meal. OMG! The oyster Rockefeller was the absolute the best I've ever had! And this is the only way I will eat them so I'm pretty a snob when it comes to it. The fine bacon bits and the perfectly cooked oysters is chef kiss!! My red snapper dish was outstanding.
