I had a 60 minute foot & 60 minute body massage ($120) on 8/19/24 at Massage Palace at approximately 1:30-1:45 pm or so. I have been going here off & on for years since they opened up at Ala Moana Center & have been going more on a regular basis. Today, I had Linda who gave me a very good massage. As I went up to the counter to pay for my massage, I gave my masseuse Linda a $20 gratuity tip. Linda said something to the receptionist in Chinese which I did not understand & the receptionist translated & said that Linda said that the tip I gave her was not enough! The receptionist suggested I give an additional $10 to make it a total of a $30 tip which is equivalent to being a 25% tip! I would have given $5 more but I did not have a $5 bill & ended up giving her the $10 she suggested. When I got home, I began to research & found on Yelp going back as far as three years, there are four incidents of customers who posted reviews asking for a larger tip that the customer intended to give. One three years ago, & three as recent as 9, 7 & 1 month(s) ago which shows that this practice of asking for larger gratuity tips is being asked on a regular basis. In the review of three years ago, the customer was told by the lady/manager "Sorry, we don't accept anything less that 20%" the Business Owner, Hang L replied back on Yelp "we don't have "mandatory 20% tip" this company policy." In the Yelp review of 9 months ago, business manager Yiz L replied "We have employee's policy in store and one of them is "Don't ask for tips". We never allow therapists to ask for tips & we will dismiss the therapists who get three warnings." In the review of 7 months ago, the customer was told by the receptionist "that it's a required 15% minimum tip for all customers". The business manager Yiz L replied with "We have strict employee policies to regulate employee behavior and we will investigate your case. When confirmed, we will make punishments accordingly for the possible employee's negligence and non-compliance." The latest review 1 month ago, the customer was told by the staff member "that their tip was not enough and were pressured to tip a specific total." The business manager Yiz L replies with "Tips are an important source of income for all employees and support their lives. If you are satisfied with their services, please leave some tips. Tips are not required but greatly appreciated....We do have a policy in store to not ask for gratuity. We will investigate what happened, find out who was working the front desk at that time and make sure the behavior does not continue. We are truly sorry for that and in no way support that behavior." So, the therapists can't ask for larger tips but it's okay for the receptionist to ask for a larger tip for the therapist? Can you imagine how many other tourists, visitors & locals are being asked to give larger tips but just won't write a review or can't be bothered to write what is a rude & unprofessional business practice. I sorry to say that this incident has left a very unsavory impression on me & I hesitate to return there to give them my business. I have also reported this unprofessional business practice to the Ala Moana Guest Services office. read more

Today was my 4th time to get a massage in 3 weeks. The first 3 times were good but I was not satisfied with today's session. I had to wait for 20 min for the masseuse lady to come. I started at 5:40 and was supposed to finish at 6:50 but she finished at 6:45.  And her technique was more rubbing than massaging. I don't mind going back but not with her.
