It's not very often I can say that I love a place even though we weren't greeted for 20 min. We had the sweetest host who looked to be very overwhelmed with putting people on a wait, seating people and handling to-go orders. Absolutely love this place! It is my favorite place to get my Asian fix. I love their Chicken Teppanyaki as it is full of flavor and the perfect amount of sauce to mix in with the rice. I also enjoy the cheese roll as an appetizer, such a savory treat to start the meal. They have the best Miso soup I have ever had. The tempura place was flavorful and crispy. It consists of 4 large shrimp, zucchini, sweet potato, asparagus, green beans, and a sweet onion ring. The green beans were tough and rubbery, but it is more of a sushi and sashimi restaurant. I had the ninja turtle for a drink and it was very good. Plenty of coconut flavor. Went with family. I'd been here a year or two before when I was visiting from out of state and I remember it being good. Service was prompt (but we got there right at 5). All the food was delicious, presented beautifully and fresh. Talking to my family, it seems like the food has some variability as almost all of our food had an abundance of sauce. My husband and I have been living in Mobile for a few years now and there's not many good sushi places around but when we really crave sushi, we make the drive to Master Joe's in Fairhope. Overall, the sushi is pretty good but not amazing. It's definitely more Americanized (cream cheese, fried/baked, "yum yum sauce") and not traditional Japanese sushi. But considering where we live, it's decent. However, we will no longer be coming back. Usually when we come visit, the service is okay. But the last time we came, we were shocked at how we were treated. My husband and I were seated at a bar since tables were not available; however we don't really mind sitting at the bar anyway. We sat there for 15 minutes before someone asked us if we wanted water or anything to drink. I didn't think much of it since I figured they might be busy. 10 minutes later after we got water, we were asked if we wanted any appetizers. At this time, another couple walks in and is seated at the bar next to us. When they were seated, the server immediately asked them what they wanted to drink and promptly got them wine glasses and wine. They ordered appetizers at this time. This couple came in almost 30 minutes after us but got their drink right away and our appetizers also came at the same time. I thought that was odd that they were too busy to ask us what we'd like to drink for 15 minutes while we sat there but got that couple their wine instantly when they sat down. Anyway, we had to flag the server down to order entrees and when they were served to us it was handed to us from across the bar. I noticed the server would go around the bar and serve the other couple directly instead of serving across the bar like she did for us. My husband and I started to feel uncomfortable about the difference in treatment and noticed that the restaurant was full of Caucasian people and we were the only Asian people. I didn't know if the server treated us different because of our race (which is weird because it's technically an "Asian" restaurant) or whatever reason she was neglecting us. My husband and I enjoyed each other's company and conversation and it distracted me from the uncomfortable feeling I had. We wouldn't have minded waiting if the people around us had to as well due to it being busy, but that was not the case. I felt like the couple next to us were treated like celebrities/High priority while we felt really neglected. Even the way she spoke to other customers and her mannerisms were different from the way she acted with us. After the entree, we definitely did not want to stay any longer for dessert and asked for the check. We always tip 20% even for bad service. When we left the restaurant and got in the car, I asked my husband if he felt the same way I did in the restaurant (we didn't talk about it while we were in the restaurant) and he told me he noticed it too. It was sad to feel that way. I reached out to the manager who said would look into the situation but never followed up. I don't believe every server who works here is like the one we had but it made us decide not to come back when the restaurant didn't treat this situation with importance. Dozens of Outstanding Japanese Dishes I have traveled to Japan many times and enjoy good sushi. This is as good as it gets. They have 2 Japanese chefs working there and the dishes were outstanding as were the presentations. We had a few dishes and they were all very good and fresh. I do not believe you can go wrong eating anything on the menu or the chef's special. The place is very small with a few tables and a counter sushi bar. We arrived around 1130 and had no problem finding a table. When we left around 1230 it was completely full with people waiting for arable. pick your meal times wisely to avoid wait. Master Joe's is situated in downtown Fairhope. They have plenty of parking in the back. The staff is very friendly and service is fast. I don't particularly like their sashimi. It doesn't matter if I asked someone in Fairhope, Satsuma, or Mobile- When I asked where the best sushi in the area was- the response was always the same "Master Joe's". We had been told by many before we went to make sure to try the Sushi Pizza. That was a must we were told. After asking for some suggestions from the friendly waitress, we decided on some rolls. Lots of rolls... and a sushi pizza. Ok. Here we go. Ready? First of all.. the soy sauce. They had regular and low sodiu.. and a house blend that was low sodium based. It had hints of ginger and citrus and was perfect. Listen folks.. .The Sushi Pizza is no joke. Absolutely amazing. One of the best things I have ever eaten.. And I have eaten more than the average person. I promise you that. It had crazy things on it- like crawfish and crab and baked seaweed. Well- crazy to my wife who won't touch any of that with a 10 foot pole typically- but she gobbled this up like there was no tomorrow! It was absolutely amazing. Go get this stuff. Go now. Hurry. This small, quaint restaurant in the heart of downtown Fairhope boasts the best sushi on the Eastern Shore and all of the greater Mobile area. We have never had a bad roll there and the sashimi is always fresh and cut in large pieces. It is on the expensive side, but once you taste their sushi, you understand why you are paying a premium. The thing that stands out in my mind about this place is the ambiance. The place has nice interior design, a bar, and dim lighting that would be good for a date. It is relatively small, and something of a hotspot so it's usually crowded and thus loud. The noise level makes it less ideal for a date. We were craving some Japanese food so we decided to stop by after reading good reviews. I ordered the chef special where there were a ton of sashimi, nigiri, and a sushi roll. Forgot the name of it but that's basically it. I was pleasantly surprised as to the quality of the fish because it had reminded me of a regular sushi restaurant. It's a small restaurant so there's usually a wait at dinner time. We were lucky and got the last open table when we walked in. After getting us water, it was around 15 minutes before our order was taken, I think our waitress forgot about us & we had to wave at her. I ordered my favorite Ocean's Eleven - spicy tuna, crab and cucumber, topped with salmon, tuna, yellowtail & avocado, and then dressed with ponzu and eel sauce. It is one of the best sushi combinations I've ever tasted. It has very little rice which is great for those of us counting carbs. My friend ordered her staple Titanic Roll. The food was served fast for a full house and the waitress was apologetic about earlier. It was busy and noisy as usual but unfortunately for us, this evening meal came with two banshees at the next table. We ate our wonderful rolls and left before their screeching broke our ear drums! We have ordered take out so many times they literally answer the phone with "Hey Zack!" My husband. Some of our favorites are the spicy tuna, spicy tuna tempura, Russian revolution, crazy roll and Jubilee roll which is on their sister sushi restaurant but they will make it if you ask! The house made soy is killer. Highly recommend however the place is small hence why we order take out. You never know if they will be slammed or if you will have a table.
