A causal and cheap Chinese spot with quality dishes that were very generous in portion. We went as a big group so we got a spread of things: Jian Bing, Short Ribs Congee, Wonton Noodle Soup, Meat Folder, Chicken Dumpling, Sesame Noodles, Scallion Pancake, and Pan fried Dumplings. Great spot for some comfort food! It definitely gives you more of a family owned establishment. When you enter there are a few tables, I believe there were a few more in the back but it was relatively empty when we came in so it was pretty quiet. The spot is kind of tucked away on Hawthorne, it's a hidden gem. My boyfriend and I walked in without a reservation for a quick dinner, and were quite amazed. The prices are beyond fair, and to our surprise the portions were HUGE. We were not expecting so much food, and honestly, we probably over ordered. We got 6 items, the xiao long bao, Chinese potstickers, salted pork rib congee, beef noodle soup, meat fold (not pictured), and then some other dumplings. The sauce they give you is very light and not salty at all. The meat inside all of the dumplings were seasoned nicely! I'm used to establishments not doing that, and overcompensating with a saltier dip. So I was pleasantly surprised. My favorite was the congee! I'm not sure what type of rice was used, maybe broken rice? It was the perfect consistency and flavor that really warmed you up. My boyfriend loved the beef noodle soup, the beef was super tender! Next favorite was the Chinese style pot stickers. The crunch layer was perfect, a good thickness and crunch not soggy at all. The xiao long bao were okay, still overall good. Master Kong easily gets 5 stars for being AFFORDABLE and good quality food/selection. Menu here is a few chinese noodles (wet/dry), some rice dishes, CONGEE (get this, it's so good here, slight hint of ginger makes it even more delicious), dumplings etc. It's not big like many of the Chinese restaurants. It's a limited menu yet it offers a lot of options to fit your mood. Best of all this being high quality it's probably the cheapest place to get this kind of level of food in Portland. Hopefully they never raise prices, but even if they do this will still be a solid spot for quality and value. read more

Great place to get handmade and fresh dumplings. Place is nice and clean and I love that you can just go up to the kiosk to order your food. Everything is handy and even though the waiter is nice and offers to get you things, you can also just get up and grab bowls, sauces, to go boxes, and tea on your own. The pork dumplings were so juicy and yummy definitely my recommendation and I also liked the pan fried buns. Soup dumplings were good as well. We also ordered the scallion pancake. Master Kong's is a quick and easy pit stop that has now expanded to two locations! It is not trying to be one of those trendy Chinese American fusion restaurants, nor does it try to cater to Western audiences with its food options. It reminds me of some of the more homestyle Chinese food that is cheaper in price and is more about quick and simple. Some of the items that we tend to get here are their dumplings, jian bing, and their noodles. I really do tend to enjoy most of the items. They're basic and relatively affordable in a city where the average takeout item is now around $15-$20 per item. I do particularly like their Mustard Pork Noodles Soup. This is not a dish that can commonly be found in most Chinese restaurants, and I do appreciate that they are one of the few places that provide it as a menu item! read more

I've been a regular at Master Kong on Division for several years and really enjoy their food. Delicious jian bing, tasty dumplings and soups. Recently I dropped in for lunch with a friend at MK's second location off Hawthorne. Some key differences -- the Hawthorne MK has you order on a touch-screen kiosk that dominates the center of the room while the restaurant's decor is otherwise minimal and spare. Nothing like the engaging ambiance of the Division Street MK with its crowded tables and the busyness of its open kitchen, the chatter from the chefs, the sounds of somone chopping vegetables, and so on. Service here might be smoothed out since even though the restaurant had only one other customer my friend's bowl of soup (beef brisket noodle) was brought to our table a good ten minutes before my bowl of soup (wonton noodle) was delivered. Maybe the kitchen staff could do a better job timing the preparation of two orders for one table? read more

She also asked where we would like to sit so after we order our table already has water for us. Cups, spoons, forks, and chopsticks are available at each table. Chili oil and soy sauce vinegar mix are packed in sauce containers. My girlfriend and I ordered the meat folder, beef brisket noodle soup, Chinese style pot stickers, and salted chicken congee. For the price of 11 I was surprised how much beef was in the soup and the handmade noodles were delicious. The pot stickers were crunchy and filled with meat. We were so full that later that day was when we were able to eat the meat folder which was packed with meat and well seasoned. You will use the machine to order your food. It also has pictures, which is helpful for those who are curious about what the food looks like. We ordered the chicken dumplings, steamed buns, braised beef noodle soup, preserved egg and pork congee, and a Jianbing. Both the dumplings and steamed buns were amazing. You can tell they are fresh and full of flavor. The congee was perfect in the sense of texture and taste. I really enjoyed the noodles in the braised beef noodle soup. Deal Killer. slow moving line to wait to order, as it is very slow to go through the whole menu on the machine. People took five minutes or more of going back and forth on the menu, and there was only on machine. Took us twenty minutes (only four people in front of us) to order. I hope they get rid of it. The self ordering system is convenient and a great idea, but not great as half of our order was missing until we said something. We noticed a handful of other folks also frustrated by this error. If a system loses orders from customers, then it's time to change it up! The beef had a ton of fat on it, so be warned. The dumplings were great, crispy and comforting. After waiting for the remaining food to arrive we decided to ask for them to go- waited a solid 45 minutes and another 20 after we said something. Most of the food is outstanding - the soup dumplings are so delicious! We also had meat pockets, jian bing, soy noodles, and veggies. The greens and soup dumplings were incredible. If you love meat served with a side of meat, Master Kong's meat pockets will be right up your alley. For my family, it was too much pork in too little space! The only thing I would recommend is to ditch that annoying and time consuming touch screen ordering. Not only it has no explanation of the dishes which is a big plus to have given it is authentic food - (not everyone knows Chinese), it is also a horribly time consuming system with people lining up behind the one screen to order. You better be ready to order because it feels very awkward when people are behind you and you are trying to figure out what you would like. Please do bring paper menus with pictures and at least a bit description. Something that they think is cute is actually dragging this restaurant down. The steamed veggies were nice. The "meat folder" was also nice. The Chinese dumplings were a miss and so was the ziaolongbao. Skip those. Will go again tonight. read more

So excited for the new location of Master Kong in Portland. 32nd just off Hawthorne. I've been to the SE location a half dozen times and coming from NoPo that is a drive. I was promptly greeted upon arrival and it's counter service (sort of) They have a huge ordering pad. See the pic. Hot tea, ice water and condiments are readily available. One condiment that I never see were the sesame paste cups. Try that and chili oil in your soup The broth had depth of flavor, the noodles were springy and had a nice chew. Beef was flavored much more than typical beef in a Chinese restaurant. Along with a soy marinated egg and baby bok chou. All in all fantastic! There were a few negative reviews as of recent but after eating, I having nothing bad to say. The vibe is nice and there is no server to take your order; that's done yourself. I ordered the Beef Brisket soup and soup dumplings, my girlfriend getting the same. I loves the soup, the beef slightly sweet but a great juxtaposition to the saltiness of the broth. The noodles were soft and delicious and for being hungover, it was absolutely perfect. The soup dumplings were great too and come in little tins which is kinda cute. The broth on the inside was also delicious and I would definitely get them again. The two meals together were fantastic. Overall, this place seems pretty underrated, especially for the price of their menu items. I recommend visiting here if hungover or wanting comfort food because they deliver that wonderfully.
