I came here through a Groupon deal for a 4 day birthday weekend! I didn't expect anything, but it was truly a wonderful place to stay. The location is walking distance, close to the Embarcadero, ( waterfront), and also the main area of town. The free 5pm wine and cheese tasting is just okay. The free breakfast is just okay. I liked the pastries, yogurt. My husband made waffles one morning! The room was clean, nice and roomy! The bed was very comfortable. I didn't know they had Tempurpedic mattresses in some of the rooms! Next time I will ask for one of those rooms! The towels were extra fluffy towels were really nice. The staff always made pretty fans with the towels and tissues every day. The shower head was placed high so my tall husband did not have to crouch down. That's a nice touch. The staff! Five star! Gabie the front desk was always so nice . Another time, I was asking about what fun things to do, and was told to check out Montana De Oro park. I am not a hiker, so I picked the Bluff Cliffs hike and it was the highlight of my birthday weekend! By the time we checked out, Gabie and I were sad to say good bye. Gabie was fantastic! We were 20 minutes away in Pismo Beach after we checked out and she called! I left my pearl ring by the coffee maker! I just bought this beautiful unusual ring at a store down by the Embarcadero. Gabie called and told me the staff found my ring as they were cleaning the room! Now that's honesty!!!! We drove back ( 25 minutes) and retrieved my pearl ring. I asked to see the person who cleaned my room and gave her a tip. Daniela, the staffer who was honest was gracious, so I could thank her in person. WIth everything booked in Paso for the weekend (as usual!) I looked to Morro Bay for a last minute getaway. The Masterpiece Hotel had decent prices and good reviews, so we booked it. The location is good if you want to walk to restaurants and different sites in Morro... everything seemed about a ten minute walk away. We had a comfortably furnished room with a small patio and a view of the rock. Yes, the room was a little stuffy and some of the artwork kind of freaked me out. Not that it was bad art, I just felt like i was being stared at. I couldn't figure out if there was AC or not, but the weekend we stayed was extremely warm everywhere on the Central Coast. You probably wouldn't have an issue with heat otherwise. Bathroom and furnishings were a little dated but everything was clean and in working order. They do a nice breakfast buffet and happy hour in the evening. The staff were friendly. Easy on and off to the freeway and only about 20 minutes to Paso. If I see this place pop up on Groupon or one of those other sites again, it's a definite consideration. read more

This was the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. The smell was awful as soon as we walked into our room. There were stains on some of the towels and the curtains. Our smoke detector had low battery and started beeping at 4am so not only are they not clean, they don't keep on normal maintenance. We asked if there was anything they could do to lower our expensive single night due to the inconvenience of being woken up at 4 in the morning and the lady working the front counter was so unnecessarily rude. The price was good and the front desk was very nice overall, but I could hear the people upstairs stomping around all night, which was really annoying. I have been visiting Morro Bay at least once year for the last 30 or so years, and for the last five or six, the Masterpiece has been my home away from home. It is a small "boutique" hotel with maybe two dozen rooms. I always stay in the penthouse (studio) suite, which is a real gem. Completely circular with a private balcony with a view of Morro Rock, and a private in-room Jacuzzi that will fit four. The bed is comfortable with great soft linens, the room is open and airy, the Jacuzzi is way cool, the upkeep is very good, and the staff is great. Couple that with very generous off-season pricing (4 nights, tax and all included was just under $650) and its easy to see why it's my go-to get-away. read more

Booked this hotel for the based on Yelp reviews and location. $250 total/night, 1st floor with no AC. If you're a light sleeper then good luck getting any decent rest here. We could hear every car passing by with the window opened and every footsteps from the people upstairs with paper thin walls. Ok breakfast, young female staff in the front desk was not very friendly. Will definitely not stay here again next visit. So many other options around & closer to town also! read more

I have stayed at the Masterpiece Hotel many times over the years, and always liked it. This time was not so good. Preface - they are doing upgrades. Upgrades can cause glitches. This makes sense. However, we had to move from one room to another to a third before we got one that was livable. Seriously. Listing the various issues would be tedious. However, proper pre-inspection of the rooms by hotel staff could have pin-pointed them. Having a full-time maintenance person available could have helped fix them. There was no full-time maintenance man when we were there. The front-desk person was unable to fix the stuck balcony door (although he tried) nor was it his job. I hope that in a few months things will straighten out for Masterpiece. I would like to go back there with confidence that I wouldn't need to move in three times. read more

My girlfriend and I stayed here from June 10th-13th. I am pretty sure we had suite 9. For the price that you pay, the room is pretty great. You get: a nice rotating flat screen, a little balcony, a fold out couch, a king bed, microwave, fridge, and a pretty nice shower. The hotel has a very good spread for continental breakfast, from cereal and oatmeal, to pastries and waffles. They also have hard boiled eggs and yogurt. In the evening there is complimentary wine and cheese. There is a nice little spa and a small gym. The hotel is clean and the staff is friendly. The room service also works very quickly. I only have two things to point out. I think the door to our room would catch on the latch when opening it sometimes, so maybe adjust the latch? The fireplace would also make this very loud popping noise when it had just shut off, and continue to do so for maybe 15 minutes. read more

Got the king room very spacious BUT had issues with the light fixtures/controls. Bathroom was very small and disappointed how the bathroom was setup. Balcony/patio was very tiny. $128 for a king wasn't bad. Didn't have any neighbors so it was very quiet no kids running around and my husband and I were on the second floor. This could've been a 4 star but I noticed stains on the sofa/couch and noticed a stain on the floor. Strands of random hair not sure from previous occupants or from the maid? Liked how they had a recyclable bin in our room liked how they had an extra toilet paper roll and extra towels provided within the room. The gentleman who set us up with the room was very well mannered and polite and very professional. Overall I wouldn't mind coming back to this hotel. read more

We stayed this weekend and we are VERY disappointed! My wife and I tried to have a nice peaceful weekend and there was a party next door. The first night he was awakened at 11:30 with loud music and it took 45 minutes for the night manager to get in touch with them to stop the music. Then the third night it happened again. We forewarned the day manager and once again at 9 pm that the party was going on again. It took until 10:15 to get the manager to call them. We packed up and left at 10:30 for a 2 1/2 hour drive home. We will never stay again. read more

Every year me and my husband go to Morro bay so we can relax and he can do his coach thing for the wrestling event CIT it's huge,how ever I am very picky, I don't like cheap sheets and I don't like smoking hotels thank goodness this hotel doesn't have both! The Staff is always very very nice you have to majorly screw up for them to even think about being rude, but any ways every room we have stayed in has been clean not one hair that wasn't mine was found not one spot on the glasses not one dust bunny. This hotel has a spa hot tub and gym and feels like home meaning it's not all modern like the comfort Inn but every thing is kept very well . They have laid out papers in the morning a very nice breakfast my husband thinks for the price they can improve but he's not much of a carb eater so you know. The parking is a small area but we have never not been able to find a parking spot. This year we got a room on the first floor which was not the norm for us but we have a 3 month old son so we had to change it up. The people staying above us were loud but you know that's life the hotel staff can't do anything about that unless it was a child running up the hall and back then maybe but in general noise is a given walls are not sound proof. My experience with this hotel every year has been amazing. They have laundry services and coin operated machines for regular folks .The best part is that at 5pm they have free wine cheese and snacks for us !! Who doesn't love that. I especially loved the location and if you get a room on the second floor the views are amazing! Located on main street shops and bars are walking distance! This place is a gem! You must stay here ! The short is if you have children or value your health don't stay here. I couldn't make this up- Been coming here for over a decade. For that matter El Morro Masterpiece has the been only place our little family stayed when in Morro Bay. Had our last stay last night. A "non-smoking" establishment that looks the other way when guests smoke on the balcony is just wrong. An establishment that looks the other way when guests use controlled drugs on the balcony is just irresponsible perhaps even criminal. We had to switch rooms late last night (after 1030pm) because the guests next to us were smoking weed on their balcony. We had our sliding door open to let the cool breeze but all we got was a room full of pot smoke. So we moved to the new room only to find that pot smokers were next to us. Turns out the room they were smoking pot in wasn't theirs they we just hanging out with some friends room in that 1st room because the balcony was by the street and a little out of view. The police should have been called. They should have been asked to leave. At least I would think, but no the night clerk 'Jeremiah' shook their hands, made some kind of deal with them and they stayed- marijuana and all. I asked Jeremiah to make a note that the pot smell was not from us and to note why we had to change rooms , he said he did, but the morning clerk said he didn't mention it in his email account. Jeremiah lied about properly documenting the accounts, failed hotel in his duties and failed *all* the guests that stayed their that night. tl;dr Not ever staying here again. So sad. read more

The Masterpiece is a special place to my husband and I. We get away once a year from work and our little ones to rest and enjoy the beauty of Morro Bay, and the Masterpiece has always provided us with a consistent friendly, clean, quiet environment. After ten years of patronage we are here this weekend for our anniversary and are sad to find that the place is in disrepair and the staff rude. We walked into a room with two large tears in the curtain with a congratulatory bottle of Martinellis. The pillows smell bad, the door handle to the room is broken. The clerk at check in (after ignoring us more hen ten minutes in a phone call when we arrived) accidentally charged our debit card and extra $328 that although will fall off in a few days in the meantime on our trip our account appears to have a zero balance affecting our eating and entertainment. We are expecting twins soon so this anniversary/baby moon was hoped to be our last rest in a while. The clerk today said she knew about the curtains and they were in the process of ordering new. I told her the torn curtains should be removed, yet here they remain. I told her our account would have a hold on it effecting our ability to dine etc and she shrugged with a cold apology. No hospitality, not even a meager attempt to make amends. I'm sorry that this home away from home has fallen to pieces. read more

I love love LOVED this hotel!! I have always wanted to stay here after getting a little tour of the hotel, so my boyfriend booked a weekend as my Christmas present. We stayed in the jacuzzi room 110 and it was awesome. It rained the whole weekend, so it's a good thing we had an awesome room to stay in to wait the weather out. The spa is awesome and makes you feel super relaxed, they have free wine and cheese from 5-7, and over 100 pieces of various art in the hallways and rooms. The jacuzzi in our room was amazing, I pulled the curtains back and bathed like a princess. We also had the fire place going most of the night. It was the best Christmas present ever. We've stayed at few different hotels in Morro Bay and this is by far the best for the price. Location is only a few blocks from the main shopping and bay restaurants as well as the highway off ramp. The customer service was exceptional and pleasant at the front desk. The daily breakfast was perfect which included fresh fruit, hot or cold cereal, toast, hard boiled eggs and muffins and to top of with hot coffee and OJ or apple juice. We didn't use the fitness center or pool but it looked kept and clean. The rooms were quaint and well maintained. Not exactly the four seasons but everything worked and they had your toiletries available if you forgot yours. Very nice weekend getaway and hotel to match. I bought a reduced room rate through Groupon, and I enjoyed my three-night stay here. My room was spacious and clean. The expanded breakfast was filling and fun to make your own waffles. The evening wine and cheese is a nice touch, as is the Roman bath-style hot tub. The sound insulation is average to a bit above average. I could not hear conversations through the wall like other hotels. The hotel is within walking distance to Embarcadero, and the young man who works the desk in the evening is exceptionally friendly and helpful. The hotel is located with easy access to Hwy 101. The exterior is nice. We lucked out and had excellent parking. Our room was located next to the street, so the morning was a little noisy. We needed to get up early anyway. The young lady at the front desk was pleasant and helpful. The room was a little dated, but comfortable. The beds weren't to bad. There was a bit of a cleanser smell, but much better than a mildewy or smokey odor. We opened the sliding glass door and let the room air out a bit. The breakfast was OK. Muffins, danish, coffee, cold cereal, toaster, boiled eggs, various breads, OJ. Sufficient. A waterpolo team cleaned out the breakfast within 15 minutes, but the staff quickly refilled everything. We paid $130 for the one night. Not too bad, I thought. Drove around Morro Bay and enjoyed the great weather and beautiful views. Dang it! Didn't stay long enough to enjoy the wine & cheese. This is such a nice little hotel hidden in Morro Bay. My bf and I went for the weekend, and I can't remember where I read reviews for this place that were pretty good. So we booked it. When we got there we were kinda scared because we didn't know what to expect, but omg. Great service, clean rooms, very convenient, right off of main st in morro bay, and close to the 1. They have complimentary breakfast every morning from I believe 730am to 1030 am, which includes cereal, toast, muffins, etc. Pretty good! And in the evening complimentary cheese, crackers and wine. Awesome! They have a jacuzzi down stairs which is very clean and nice to be in. I do recommend to call them to see if they can give you a better deal, before you book online. Also, I recommend walking to Taco de Mexico which is just 2 blocks away, to get mexican food. It's awesome if you're already drinking (ahem!) and you're hungry. read more

Stayed here when I was driving from SF to LA, found a great deal on a room and decided to book it after reading the positive reviews. As we were driving up Main St. we saw the back side of the Masterpiece Hotel and it looked really old and read "MASTERPIECE MOTEL" I instantly thought to myself wtf... However, as we drove around to the front, it instantly looked better. It's a cute small hotel, with "works of art" in every room. My room was big and spacious, with a couch and table in the corner, and balcony. They offer free wine and cheese from 5-7 FO FREE, so this is an instant plus. Considering the price and how nice the room was, I would definitely stay here again. Don't be scared away by the "older" look of the place, it gets two thumbs up from me! read more

My awesome, loving wife had surprised me with a trip to Morro Bay and a 3-night stay at this hotel over Christmas. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and visiting this beautiful little town, but more importantly I am most grateful that this wonderful experience was attributed to the creativity and thoughtfulness of my wife, and provided us with cherished memories of our first Christmas together as a married couple. Wonderful little Inn!! Next time I'm in Morro Bay, I'm staying here again! Wish I had stayed for more than one night! Beautiful place right near the ocean. We were able to walk to town for dinner. We stayed in town to be entertained by "local karaoke", which was a lot of fun! We were pretty tired by the time we walked back to the El Morro, it was so quiet and the sound of the sea lulled us to sleep! We didn't even turn on the tv. Wish I'd have been able to use the pool! It was a beautiful, warm indoor pool! The beds were so cozy and the breakfast in the morning was more than your average "Continental"! Make your own waffles, cereals, oatmeals, hard boiled eggs and much more! We had a lovely time and we'll be back! read more

I did like our stay here free wine and cheese from 5 until they run out. The morning they have free breakfast that has a really good waffle mix. Next to the waffle mix it has a bottle that looks like caramel but no it's peanut butter and it tastes amazing on your waffles. The spa is nice and hot for sure I did like it. Just it got super hot for me to the point of just feeling sick. I opened all the windows and the back door down there so it was a bit hard to get the air circulating down there. So if you're sensitive to heat maybe too much for you. But I did fight through it for a bit to hang out down there because I did like it. The bottom of the spa was a bit rough where you sit it did kind of tear up my bathing suit bottom. But like I said I did enjoy the spa just floating in it. Our room was clean but for one thing. The bed has some thing that looked like a turd kind of grossed me out my better half swears it wasn't maybe a piece of a tree. Only other down fall is our room was by the street which super sucked because of the traffic noise. We had to sleep with our sliding door and window open because there was no A/C in our room. Don't bother! I nicely took a dirty towel to front desk and asked the girl working there, "would you want to use this on your face?" She replied sarcastically, " I didn't put it there." Nothing else was said by her, she just walked off. Last morning there the coffee machine wasn't working and there was no hot coffee, without apologies again. Well, let me tell you how pleased we were with the accomodation. Very quaint...very spacious rooms and the information made available in each room about the local area is just terrific. We stayed 2 nights and 3 days and we didn't want to leave. The breakfast was the simple continental...it was the yummy wine that we were hot for. Visit the seals in the bay by day...watch the falcons soar around the rock....come back from your days adventures....and get some cheese and wine...mmmmm Perfect day. read more

I had very mixed feelings about my stay at the Masterpiece. I really wanted to like it but it fell short of my high expectations based on all the great yelp reviews. The pros: Location! Walking distance to the Embarcadero. The view from my top floor room was nice. The rock was clearly visible when the bay wasn't foggy. Comfy bed. Nice looking Roman style spa which I didn't have time to use. Free wine from 5-7. The cons: Location! Located on a very busy/loud street. No A/C! Which I imagine is normally not a problem but the weekend I was there was hot and the entire hotel was stifling. When I called the front desk asking where the thermostat was, I was told to open the sliding glass door. I did and welcomed the breeze but did not welcome the loud traffic. I had to sleep with it open because the room was unbearably warm overnight and I didn't feel safe. The old wall heater was a nice touch. Wi fi signal was non-existent in our room (furthest from the lobby) unless you stood outside on the balcony. The television was an old low def CRT model. I read in a review from November that said that followed by a comment from the hotel saying they had new ones on order. I saw flat screens in a couple of the rooms from the parking lot but they were all in the suites. I guess they decided to upgrade for their higher paying guests. I was disappointed most by this and the lack of wi fi because I was looking forward to using my new chromecast so my son and I could watch Netflix before bed. Well, without a new TV AND wi fi, that didn't happen. When the downstairs room had the shower running, the pipes sounded like a sea creature being tortured. The "breakfast" was the poorest excuse for continental breakfast I've ever seen. Had it not been for the waffle maker, I wouldn't have bothered. They didn't even have the hard boiled eggs everyone mentioned. No protein at all. Sticky spots on the carpet near the television. I might or might not stay here again. What a cute hotel! Came here for an anniversary getaway with my husband, and we would definitely stay here again. Our bed was clean and comfy, the fireplace was cozy and we had a great view of Morro Rock from our little balcony. :-) I'm giving 4 stars because we enjoyed our stay and the place has character, as well as some fun special features (like fresh waffles in their free continental breakfast, afternoon wine and cheese, and a beautiful Roman style spa room!) the staff was nice, the outside styling of the hotel is pretty and all the artwork prints lining the halls was a lot of fun, but there's still a little room for improvement to get it up to a 5 star review. Suggestions: -It would be nice if there were another protein option besides hard boiled eggs in the continental breakfast offerings. Maybe a selection of yogurt? -Add 2 large bath towels to every room to be used for trips to the Roman Spa (we discovered that 3 bath towels for two people who want to soak and then shower is not really enough) or have extra towels at the front desk or in the spa area. Either way, the extra towels could be used to help promote the Roman Spa. :-) -Strengthen the wifi signal. We were in a far corner room (nice!) and couldn't connect to the wifi. Considering we were there to relax and spend time together, it wasn't a big deal on this trip, but "free wifi" really should reach every room. -A fresh coat of paint on the balcony railings would really spruce it up. :-) (Nothing major.)
