This was our first visit to Mastiff Kitchen. Thankfully, they weren't extremely busy on Labor Day holiday for dinner. We dined with a party of four and looked forward to our meal since reading the favorable reviews since opening their La Mesa location. We ordered the following items: double smash burger with shoestring fries, pork nugs, & pig fries. We also had a glass each of their Sauvignon Blanc & Cabernet Sauvignon wines which were happy hour priced all night. All food dishes were served promptly, hot, well portioned, and tasty. It was great new when I learned that Mastiff Kitchen was coming to East County, San Diego: La Mesa in fact. They have a great happy hour were many items are $5 each. For example, the Rustic Tomato Salad and the Crispy Wings I enjoyed with the spicy honey coating. I also had a slice of the sausage & peppers Detroit style pizza for $5 as well. If you get whole, it's $5 off the pie during the hours of happy hour from the 3 pm to 6 pm. The wings were terrific! They were indeed crispy and meaty as well, but what really stood out, was the tasty hot honey garlic. The dressing was marvelous. They were not overly spicy but just right. They were great wings. The only bummer is that your $5 only gets you three wings. Four would be just right. The Rustic Tomato salad was delicious. The fresh herb and balsamic dressing was quite good, and I loved the heavy amount of freshly grated parmesan cheese on top. I did however feel that the tomatoes needed to be halved one more time for ease of eating. I know the salad is "rustic" but the tomato slices were just to big, in my opinion. The Detriot style pizza was very good. It was thick and fluffy, but what I really liked was the cheese crust that ringed the perimeter of the pizza. That not only brought on some great flavor, but texture as well. I loved the house made sausage. It was very flavorful. The pizza was a winner. The place is very casual. Love this place! Been here twice now and each experience was great. Some of the food we've ordered the last 2 times were Crispy Brussel Sprouts, Andouille sausage, pork nugz appetizer, smash sliders, and the following pizzas: That's My Boy, Sausage & Peppers and Meet Meat. All of them were delicious but we all agree That's My Boy pizza was the best! This restaurant also has 30+ beers on tap and served pleasantly colder than other bars/restaurants we've been to. Pairs well with the pizza and sliders. We were seated right when we walked in and given menus to look over but you have to go up front to place your order, which isn't a big deal. Food and drinks were served pretty fast and staff checked in on us several times to check if we needed anything else. There are several TVs to watch the football game. The restaurant wasn't too loud and you can still hold a conversation with the people at your table. The parking situation isn't too bad. There's a small parking lot and plenty of street parking. I've always wanted to try this spot located in an unassuming location in the middle of a neighborhood and it did not disappoint! I don't have crazy expectations from a place that serves the standard American pub grubs and libations, but this place has a great atmosphere. The lady who helped us was so sweet and pleasant. The restaurant is clean and the vibe is casual and relaxed. The food was out of this world. It's definitely heavy food, but they have tons of lighter and even vegetarian options. I have to say that the garlic maple brussel sprouts are TO DIE FOR!! The Mastiff fries has me dancing on my seat because not only is it flavorful, it is also GENIUS. Healthily busy on a Friday... actually a little afraid to post this review due to limited seating, but the food and service were soooooooo good. They hype on the wings is real and we'll deserved. Delicious and crispy, I typically order them naked with sauce on the side, these were delicious on their own, and the sauces have me rethinking my wing strategy as their flavors blew my mind. That hot honey butter and the gochuchang sauce have me thinking about them days later. Their pizza was so good that we took slices home to my in laws, and now they keep asking us where exactly we got it. Decided to try out the new neighborhood spot. We came around 5ish for the happy hour menu. The parking lot is relatively small, so I can imagine the parking being dicey during busy times. We ordered the pig nugs, sliders, chicken wings and pizza and beer. All the food was really good. The pig nugs have a great balance of mouth melting crunchiness and flavor. You have a choice of flavor for the chicken wings and we decided on the Hot Honey Garlic. Each order comes with three wings, so definitely take advantage of the happy for multiple orders. The wings were also good and I was pleased with the honey garlic option. The sliders were also delicious. They are thin patties with grilled onions. Reminded me of White Castle burgers on the east coast. Finally was the pan pizza. Really good pizza with a great crust and generous toppings. All the food and a couple of beers came to around $50 with tip. Not bad. The staff was extremely nice and gave off a nice vibe. I have been a fan of Mastiff Kitchen since I've tried them many times at North Park Beer Company so I was super excited when they opened super close to my house! Everyone was very welcoming and the staff were great. They have 30 beers and ciders on tap and the staff was helpful at recommending certain ones. We came on a Friday night around 7:30 and it was actually a lot busy than I thought it was going to be but that's a great sign. As for the food, they ar known for their sausages so I always recommend getting their sausage. I also love the pork nugs! So crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked. First off --I have been loyal to this place since they opened ( I should have posted raving reviews and will for my next meals there) but tonight I ordered their pan pepperoni pizza -- takeout -- for my guests who had not tried the pizza yet. I was so excited to have them fall in love with this pizza and it's crisp tasty crust. ( we split the burger fries etc last time-- which was amazing also) WELL the pizza tonight under the unexpected extra sauce on top was so burn that pieces and 90% of the bottom crust were not edible. I don't believe the team running this restaurant understands that you lose guests "one at a time". First issue was a couple of months ago on a delivery. I called the location when my order was shorted a burger. The female on the phone asked the take-out employee who replied, "sorry, but I know it was in there." She then acted like she had no idea how to help and really didn't care. Fast forward to 4/24 when a delivery just did not show up. The manager on the phone basically said, not our problem reach out to the delivery company, adding "you chose the delivery company" really? Today is there opening day! Several people here and everyone's happy! We finally have a new restaurant replacing the old! The employees are friendly, and welcoming. Despite being so busy everyone is on point with their customer service. The inside was nicely remodeled and is really cute vibe. Happy hour is 3-6pm, so far on drafts! Cute little spot in La Mesa that looks like it could be filled with little leaguers eating their weight in local pizza and sliders after their Saturday morning games while the parents enjoy a beer or two from an impressive selection. Since we don't have little leaguers and were there on a Friday, we settled for a couple of bar seats and enjoyed the happy hour selections available. My husband had a couple of beers while I opted for a glass of wine (decent selection and good prices!) and we split the My Boy pizza and some Mastiff Fries. Both were delicious and we didn't leave any crumbs behind. The pizza was a spicy pepperoni but not too spicy. I'm not a huge fan of sauce and even though the pizza sauce is on top, it's not overwhelming. The "kind of Detroit style" pizza crust is lovely. Though a thicker crust, it's fluffy and not dense. Bar service was great - we were well taken care of even with a full restaurant in the throws of Friday happy hour. This place is definitely going on our list to visit again. The place wasn't super packed, but there is limited seating. The place was a lot smaller than I expected. It seems like it's more for groups of people or those who prefer bar seating. My fiancé and I sat at a table for 4-6 because they didn't have any 2 seaters and the bar was full at the time. The food was really good. I was super surprised by the burger. It was really good and juicy. I think next time though I'd go with the plain fries. The sauce they used on the fries just wasn't for me. I could see why people would like it and I respect it. The pizza was really good though they do add a ton of marinara on top. It was a little too much for me and next time I'd order with less or none at all. Pricing for everything was not bad and you definitely get the bang for buck. Which is what always draws me to places. Quality of food and quantity of food for a reasonable price. Casual dining place, you order at the counter but a server comes around still checking on you. The burgers were hearty and delicious just a bit too much of the mayo which was supposed to be aioli, maybe next time no spread for us. The maple Brussel sprouts were my favorite, a perfect crunch and sweet combo, we also got the Pepperoni pizza, it was cheesy and had tons of pepperoni. This place used to be gluten free on the fryers. I used to recommend this to friends all the time. Now they have an item in the fryer that is not gluten free and the whole premise that was so great is now gone. Very disappointing and I hope this changes. We're locals and I can tell you this pizza is consistently delicious. Mastiff has become a weekly visit either Thursday or friday. The service is always on point! Parking during busy times can be hard but the parking lot across the street is always open. We go during happy hour, get a little heirloom tomato salad, full pizza usually pepperoni and an appetizer either the wings or the burger. If you're wondering if you can take your kids we do every time. My son plays the gumball baseball game machine and whatever sweet employee working the register likely gives us change for quarters with a smile. Again its a smaller place so plan for a little wait on a friday or saturday but pizza has a crispy outside while still deliciously soft. So worth the wait. The owner is always there and so cool! Introduced himself multiple times and you can tell he genuinely cares about his employees, restaurant and frequent customers. The service wasn't great and the selection was boring. We could see into the kitchen from our table so we could see how the pizza was assembled. Our pizza was cold. I would assume that pan style pizza would be super hot but they pour what looked like room temperature red sauce on top of it before it is served. I like their sliders, mastiff fries and generally they have beer from North Park brewing on tap. One of SDs best breweries.... Only knock is the parking is bad, seating inside can be tough as it's small and the fact you have to walk up to order everything. Other that that, we love it here! I live down the street and have been three times so far. I used to work by the stand Mastiff had in Liberty Public Market a few years ago, so I used to get their food all the time but haven't been since I moved to East County. It was refreshing to see their smaller operation expand and I was excited to see what they can do with a full kitchen! Their rotating craft beer selection is stellar. They have rare styles and limited brews, which tells me that they put their time at North Park Beer Company to good use. While the regular menu is delicious, you can also get a lot of great food for a reasonable price during happy hour. The smash burger slider is almost enough on its own and reminds me a lot of the Friendly. Sausages are served with a spicy mustard and delicious house-made sauerkraut. The wings are crisp on the outside, juicy on the inside. Both the gochujang and Buffalo options are solid, but the hot honey garlic lacks in heat and garlic flavor. Nevertheless, the food is delicious and definitely worth the price. The reason why I knocked a star off an otherwise 5-star review is because of the service model and the service itself. It's counter service at the tables, full service at the bar. I don't know why, but I've forgotten this EVERY time I've sat at the tables and I've wondered each time if the staff was ignoring me... but they weren't. At least, not every time. I suspect that my confusion is due to the setup: the pizza menu and take-out specials are posted at the register, so my brain tells me that I should only go over there to order pizza and/or takeout. They give you a regular menu at the table, take your beer order, and open up a tab, so my brain also tells me that I should expect someone to take my order. Everyone that I've brought here assumed the same thing, so it feels like the model might be a little strange for the space. Service can also be a little hit-or-miss as well. The staff is friendly, but can often get wrapped up in socializing with each other or giving such amazing service to the "regulars," that their service towards "future regulars," lacks. All in all, this is a great addition to the area and I look forward to coming back as often as I can! read more

They are very generous with the ingredients and I can't put to words how happy I was after my first bite. I requested jalapeños on half of it and it gave it a good kick. The pizza had a nice crunch on the outside but the middle part was a little undercooked. I think the bacon in it was undercooked too which caused us to have a stomachache at the end of the day. Fries were delicious and so was the wings. Super crispy and flavorful: A little sweet but a little tangy. Definitely a lot of carbs today but so worth it. Fries were really good too and I'm very glad we had them fresh because they were perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside but had the soft potato meat in the middle. We got takeout through doordash and it was so good!! We liked them when they were at liberty station and so to have them now in La Mesa is awesome. We were craving burgers so we got the double cheeseburgers but also a slice of cheese pizza for our kid and the pig fries and Brussels sprouts. The burger was the best I've had since we finally tried Crack Burger, which is out of our range distance wise to go to easily. The bun they used was nice and substantive, the burger was juicy and flavorful, and the garlic aioli really put it over the top. The fries are delicious as always though the pork rind bits did not do well as takeout (they got really hard and tough). I was surprised by how tasty the sprouts were. They were very buttery and maple-y and though not as crisp as some places, the flavor kept me coming back for more. While I did not get to try the pizza, both my husband and I were very interested after seeing it. The caramelized cheesy part around the crust looks insane and the crust itself smelled so deliciously yeasty and looked so pillowy and tender...I can't wait to go back and get the pizza next. read more
