Stopped by The Matador in Redmond a few days ago for a dinner with my colleagues. I had been to the location in Ballard but never to Redmond. We sat on the patio and the heaters were really nice. We enjoyed a bunch of appetizers and chips and salsa. I love that they offer complimentary chips! It reminds me of Tex-Mex back home. The margaritas are pretty good but I did find it weird they're not consistent size-wise. The veggie enchiladas are pretty good! I would've appreciated a spicier sauce but overall flavor was there. In the future, I'll try something different! I appreciate the number of vegetarian options they have and this restaurant reminds me the most (out of all the Mexican restaurants I've tried in the Seattle area) of Tex-Mex. read more

Food was blah. We came for HH and ordered habanero prawns which had absolutley no flavor, baja fish tacos that were fried and dry, brussel sprouts, grilled stuffed jalapeños and street tacos. The only tasty item was the brussel Sprouts. Everything else was not good. Service was poor. We had asked if they had a spicy salsa and 2 small salsas were brought out with an extra charge of $7. We were never told that there would be a $7 charge for such dinky side salsas. He could have offered Tapatio or told us there would be an extra $7 charge. Neither salsas he brought out were good. Then we asked if for his opinion on whether the $7 steak tacos or $7 street tacos were better and was told by the server that street tacos would be better. Again the server never said there would be an added charge for the street tacos if we chose steak. He added $6 extra for the steak option so our $7 HH street tacos ended up costing us $13. We could have just ordered the steak tacos for $7. It felt really shady when he rang us up with out an itemized receipt. He simply told us the amount and rang up my card. When I asked for a copy of the receipt, I saw all the extra charges. This whole experience felt dishonest/shady. The manager was unprofessional when we brought this to his attention. While the decor and ambiance are incredibly relaxing, the food is just okay. The waitress was incredibly friendly, the service was quick (4pm on a Monday),the food came out faster than I expected but the hostess needs to work on her customer service skills. The tone of her voice was friendly and welcoming but her facial expressions were the complete opposite. She didn't smile the entire time and her other facial expressions were very unwelcoming and seemingly judgemental. The presentation of the food was great but the taste was just okay. From the outside to the inside, this place has a really cool vibe. The dark brick walls, metal accents, and the Spanish bullfighter paintings come together in away that I feel like I've been transported to a hip tourist spot in downtown Disney or San Diego. They were blasting pop music, which was fine, but I thought some modern Spanish music or flamenco music would have put the finishing touch on the whole theme. Friday night, the parking lot is packed but street parking was found. Though there was a line at the host stand, we were seated fairly quickly. Our waitress was very nice and attended to us just the right amount pf times. We were served complimentary chips and salsa and then ordered the house margaritas. The salsa was fantastic but the chips a tad stale (not that I really noticed or cared). The marg was just right, not too sweet and a good size and strength. I ordered the romaine salad and bf ordered the 5 street taco plate. They came out in good time and we started munching away happily. My salad was drenched top and bottom in sauce, and the waitress nicely got me a 2nd one with no dressing to mix together. The salad was very flavorful and I liked the sauce and generous pepitas on top. The bf overall enjoyed his tacos, but thought the ground beed and pork belly were ok with the carnitas being the most flavorful. I tried his shrimp taco and liked its marinade and how it was cooked medium rare so it retained its natural shrimpy freshness and springiness. For an upscale Mexican/Spanish restaurant in the middle of downtown Redmond, this place offers a great selection of elevated yet authentic Spanish/Mexican food with great service and environment. Great late night spot I found an Redmond they have a lot of parking and they're open till midnight and happy hour menu was full of goodies I ordered the bacon wrapped jalapeño their steak nachos was really big and I also ordered their tortilla soup which was full of flavor and very robust and my friend order a Mojito and it came out really beautiful and they said the drink was really strong and good. I got takeouts couple times from this spot and every-time dishes were superb! The girl who took my phone was also very patient and kind when I was placing my order. I really want to note the nachos they have. They do not skimp on the toppings!! You can definitely ask for specific toppings for extra as well but the meat they give you a bunch. I took my Panamanian girlfriend here last night. While my girlfriend was ordering, in ENGLISH, our blonde/white waitress told her to "SPEAK ENGLISH" because she has an accent. I have never been so embarrassed and angry my entire life. We talked to the manager, who just said "I will talk with her". We demanded a new waitress, and then the manager LEFT the building and went home. Our new waitress told us "I'm sorry that happened, but I don't want to say anything to the other waitress, I don't want to mess up the workplace vibes". Your workplace "vibes" are DISCRIMINATORY. My partner is the sweetest person on the planet, and this was her first time coming to visit where I grew up. We came Saturday and the place looked in theme, but modern and a little hip. Definitely a good date night location. They got us in quicker than anticipated and service was prompt and our drinks never sat empty for even a second and the place had every table occupied. We ordered queso and the quesobirria tacos. The queso was good, a little spicy and and you could tell it wasn't processed cheese! Then the salt event happened. I say this because it has never happened to me before! I had a chip with some queso and the amount of salt was absolutely overwhelming. I thought maybe I got a big clump of undissolved kosher salt in the cheese. My date then almost choked because it happened to her! It turns out it was the chips and some where like eating a teaspoon of pure salt. I love salt but it wasn't just too much, it was obscene! I had high hopes for the tacos, which are all the rage at the moment. The meat was excellent, the au jus was perfect. But... The shells were burnt. Was in for my Bday!!!!!! Let's get into this. With both inside and out side seating we were able to get a spot near the outside but nice and warm. They don't take reservations so definitely call before just to see if their is a wait. The food was fantastic. The meat was moist and tasty. The beans and rice fantastic alongside my meal. The service was on point with no lack in drink refills and plate service. I was very pleased the waitress was not hovering and able to provide great service even when they were busy. Price was nice! Make sure you bring your ID when you go to this restaurant!! They are technically considered a "bar" so you're not allowed to dine there unless you're over 21. So definitely not kids friendly. I had to run home to grab my ID(not a big deal, they were just doing their job)...I guess I should be flattered,LOL. We were immediately served chips and salsa when we sat down. We ordered the Habanero Steak and the Picante Haba. Their food is average. It didn't really wow me. I definitely had better habanero burritos before...the other thing I didn't like was the portion size. I actually can't remember the last time I ordered a burrito where I can finish the entire thing in one sitting. I typically can only finish half of it and take the other half to go. I'd say the portion size is about half as much as what I'm used to. My boyfriend used to come here ALOT with his friends due to them accepting prime card a long time ago. Had a great time at Matador this past weekend! The vibe is really dark and cool and it's 21+, which I like. Try to hit happy hour if you can, they always have amazing deals! My go to beverage here is the watermelon margarita but you really can't go wrong with any of their tequila drinks! The watermelon marg is super refreshing, strong, and absolutely delicious. I love how you can tell that it was made with actual watermelon and not some watermelon syrup. Really good and not to sweet! I am gluten free and find myself having plenty of options here. The guacamole and bean dip are really good for starters, and I love their enchiladas and shrimp salad as well. The menu is diverse and able to please just about anyone. One thing I find strange is that they are labeled as dog friendly, but your dog has to sit outside the fence on the patio, basically on the sidewalk. So they can't even sit outside with you, they have to be on the street but can be tied to the fence. I'm not comfortable doing this with my dog, so I don't really consider Matador to be dog friendly. read more

Matador in Redmond seemed to struggle with keeping up with a full house the night I was here. Drinks weren't kept full, and when people asked for menu items to be changed they were flat out told no. It took over 30 minutes just to get our order taken and then once entrees arrived, everyone's but mine was brought out at once. I waited another 10 minutes. By then, everyone was done eating. The Matador is a Seattle chain Tex-Mex restaurant. The other locations are in West Seattle and Ballard. I have been to all of them, and I would say the food, service and ambiance seems to all be head and shoulders better at the West Seattle location than the others. Parking is not the best at any of them because of their locations. Portions were smaller here than elsewhere, too. There's a cool vibe here like the others with the black metal and swanky bar. This was such a gem. I came here in a rush with my friend (we had less than an hour to eat) and we were seated immediately. Within a minute or two we had chips and salsa and ordered our drinks, within 5 minutes we ordered our food, and by the 15/20 minute mark we had our entrees. It wasn't crowded but it wasn't empty either. AND, everything was excellent. The mangonada margarita was spicy and salty without being overwhelming and the Carnitas entrée rocked. The ambiance was also great. It gave off ranch vibes with a ton of exposed wood and brick and very cool tables with different species/stains of wood inlaid into the surface. Highly recommend and looking forward to going back and taking a bit more time to really savor the experience. Starting with the decor. Amazing! A very fun tequila bar with a loud dia de los muertos aesthetic. Really cool metal sculptures. The food was really good. Great flavors and great drinks. Luis was my server and explained both of my dishes in detail. As a chef I was impressed a server knew the menu so well. I let him know I wasn't in the mood for beans as my side and he recommended the charred corn and it was amazing and complimented my Al pastor enchiladas. After waiting 30 minutes outside in the cold for our table, then getting seated, we were kicked out of the restaurant because we were with our 18 year old son. In part this was "our fault" because we didn't happen to notice the "Our restaurant is 21+ only" sign, but honestly, this is a HORRIBLE policy, and it's easy to overlook the signs, and I've NEVER encountered this before. I can understand a restaurant preferring not to have a bunch of 18yr-olds by themselves, but to unceremoniously ask a couple of 50-somethings to leave a restaurant was a shameful way for a restaurant to behave. I can't be the only one that finds this policy to be horribly offensive. read more

Tried this place for the first time last weekend for my birthday lunch. I'm unsure if I had high expectations because people I know and recommended this place hyped it up, or what, but I wasn't impressed. I'm from southern California and there's a chain of "Mexican" style restaurants called El Torito, and Matador reminded me of it, just a bit more expensive. The service was subpar, not horrible, but just not very attentive. They brought the usual chips and salsa to the table like most Mexican-style restaurants. My husband took one bite of a chip and sent them back because he said it tasted stale. I didn't think so, I chalked it up to poor-quality toritillas. We ordered our entrees, he the carnitas plate and I the chicken tortilla soup, and the quesabirria appetizer. The appetizer was ok, tasted a lot of chili powder. First the pulled pork plate was a MOUNTAIN of carnitas with a side of rice and beans. He said the carnitas were GOOD and so were the beans, but the rice was meh. My soup was actually pretty good and filling, however, it tasted like a lot of chili powder. It was almost like that was how they thought they were "spicing up" the food, by throwing a bunch of chili powder. It ends up giving the same flavor profile. I order a couple of drinks, blackerry habenro margarita and a blood orange margarita. Both were outstanding! I wouldn't recommend this place for a meal, maybe a snack but I would definitely recommend if you want a tasty cocktail! read more

I really enjoyed this place - ambience check, service check, vegetarian options check. Music is not loud but still feels lively. I had beyond tacos and would have them again in a heartbeat, they were really good. Hubby had steak fajitas and he loved his entree equally! Winter Marg was a great, fulfilling drink.. spicy and sharp at the beginning and then it grows on you. Fried ice cream is a hidden gem too.. I was first introduced to The Matador in their Tacoma location and was excited to see another spot where I could secure some flavorful delicious Mexican eats right in my backyard. The downtown Redmond location is in a great spot for grabbing excellent drinks to compliment even more excellent food and then taking a nice stroll downtown. I love the interior design of the restaurant with a large rustic bar at the entrance as well as the dining room with an intimate atmosphere and low lighting. The tall impressive windows let in natural lighting in the day and have rich red velvet curtains adorning them. We ate at the bar when we visited and received great service from the bartender. We enjoyed a couple margaritas and a few of their fantastic gluten free appetizer choices. The habanero shrimp and their street tacos are super flavorful and definitely two of my favorite dishes from The Matador menu. The Matador has been on my list of Bookmarks for years. After all, who wouldn't be curious about a restaurant with a metal bull posted above the entrance? Four of us arrived on a Saturday around 5:00P and at the perfect time for Happy Hour (everyday 4-6P & 10P-1A). Everything on the HH menu is reasonably priced at $6 or less, and they also offer a pretty nice selection. Off of this menu, each of us ordered tacos and we got two other plates to share among the table. Five minutes in and we were already munching on their delicious chips and fresh salsa which was zesty with the perfect heat. Our waitress was so attentive that she came by and replaced our basket right as we polished off the last few chips. Their salsa is truly addicting. Shortly after ordering, all our food arrived at once, neatly presented on colorful accented plates. I started off by tasting the Habanero Shrimp ($6 HH) which were swimming in their fiery red sauce. The shrimp were cooked well with a nice snap to them and the sauce was bold in flavor. The heat from the habanero may seem mild at first, but sneaks up on you after a few seconds and lingers (in the best way). I then grabbed some Calamari ($6 HH) which was crispy and dusted lightly with a chipotle-chile seasoning for a bit of a kick. Dab on a bit of the garlic-cilantro aioli for an added layer of flavor. While I would have liked the calamari pieces to be meatier, it was a tasty dish overall. Finally, I dove into my street tacos of which I created my own little sampler plate by ordering one chorizo, one chicken and one carnitas (3 for $5 HH - nice!). They were all topped with a sprinkle of cheese, chopped onion, cilantro and some housemade salsa. The chicken and carnitas were tender and seemed to be lightly marinated, but the salsa really enhanced them both. I enjoyed the inherent spice of the chorizo, although it was a little on the drier side. As a whole, the street tacos were just alright and didn't wow me. Unfortunately, two of them were pretty wet and constantly dripping with juices, which ended up soaking all the tortillas. Last but not least, I tried a shrimp taco (2 for $6 HH), which was a nice mix of flavors and textures... chile-sauteed shrimp, topped with crisp shredded lettuce, a smoky chile sauce and fresh pico de gallo. I LOVE shrimp, so I may be a little biased, but I would take these over the street tacos any day. From the moment we stepped in the door to the end of our meal, the waitstaff was welcoming and courteous. Our waitress checked back with us a couple times to ensure all was well. I would return again for more eats off the Happy Hour menu since the pricing is so reasonable and well-worth it. They also have a wide variety of Margaritas and a few different versions of Moscow Mules if you're seeking a refreshing drink.
