I got my free birthday soft serve but honestly, i think they're getting smaller and smaller each year. It used to be quite a decent size that I was actually quite impressed. In today's world, I don't blame them that everything is shrinking in portion, especially when it's free . They didn't have the flavor of the month so it was only matcha or vanilla. My toddler wanted to eat too so we had to stick to vanilla. They also offered complementary powder: a choice of matcha, hojicha or kinako (roasted soy bean). I picked the kinako for my toddlers sake. I haven't bought a soft serve in a few year so I'm not sure whether purchased soft serves have shrunk in size as well. read more

Just got my standard Oat milk Hojicha latte, which is my normal first drink at new place (when offered) - They have lots of sweet treats available - so might need to pay them another visit in the future. In terms of the drink itself, it was slightly more bitter then I'm used to. As a big matcha fan I was excited to try out the matcha soft serve of this shop. It opens at 1pm and it offers matcha / hojicha soft serve and other matcha drinks. The matcha soft serve shows a dark green matcha color and has an intense matcha flavour. Customers can ask to dust additional matcha or hojicha powder on top of the soft serve. I never tried it with the matcha powder so I give it a try. To me, the matcha powder does not enhance the experience but did the contrary. The matcha soft serve is too intense matcha but not enough sweetness so the bitter taste becomes too prominent to my liking. I do not feel it's worth the effort to come from downtown to have the matcha soft serve here. read more

I'd been meaning to try this place for a while and saw they had a banana float specifically for their birthday. I tried that along with their soft serve. I find their quality never misses and they have a large variety of ice cream type drinks/parfaits/desserts etc. The matcha and hojicha are strong enough and not too sweet (although still not comparable to the numerous levels of matcha you can choose from Japan!) When you order ice cream, you can choose a powder topping and I always love the kinako soybean for additional flavour and deliciousness. Their location is a bit hard to park at (only street parking) but still well worth a visit. Went for my friend's FREE birthday cone! The menu is more on the expensive side but given the quality, I think it's worth it. The service was quick and the staff was very nice. Both were a big portion enough to share with a friend but you can definitely finish on your own. My friend rates try cone 10/10 and says the yuzu mix was the perfect addition to the matcha. My parfait was great - 10/10 as well. I'm a big fan of the mochi balls. The place is clean and has cute Japanese decor. The soft serve was thick and smooth. Its portion was generate. I was very full after eating it and very satisfied. The servers at the counter were very polite. One person took the order and the other one provided the soft serve to me right away. They were quite efficient. There are some seating areas if customers want to stay and enjoy the desserts but it gets very full easily. I would highly recommend this cafe to anyone who loves desserts. I love how they have kuromitsu kinako on the menu. It reminded me of Tsujiri and that is one of my favorite drinks. I had the iced matcha kuromitsu kinako and it hit the spot. Quaint Japanese style matcha dessert place behind Richmond Public Market. Parking is available on the side streets. The place is quite wide but shallow. There are maybe only 20 seats inside. The theme is matcha green. Go figure. The goods are Japanese, but the staff clearly are Chinese. Just something worth mentioning. I had the matcha lemon. Quite refreshing I must say. Came here on the weekend and the tables were all full, but we managed to share one with a kind gentleman. We ordered the matcha parfait with matcha/vanilla swirl, which comes with cake, cornflakes and azuki paste. This was probably the best matcha soft serve I've had in the lower mainland - the vanilla complements the matcha perfectly. The matcha flavour is perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness for my tastebuds. I'm a sucker for "Lava" cakes so when we found ourselves in Richmond, closeby to Matcha Cafe Maiko, I seized the opportunity to try out their Matcha Lava Cake that I'd been seeing all over Instagram for quite some time. It came with the option of adding additional toppings so we chose to add some soft serve ice cream and 2 pieces of Shiratama (mochi). The Shiratama took quite some time to prepare and meanwhile, our Lava cake was sitting in front of us with soft serve ice cream next to it, that we really wanted to start eating before it started melting. So...we had no choice but to start digging in, even before the Shiratama was served to us. This was a bit of a turn off. The lava cake itself was accompanied by a strawberry sauce in addition to the soft serve ice cream that we opted for. It was all quite pricey for what it was, and honestly, it didn't quite live up to the hype. I have a bit of a sweet tooth so I'd have preferred this cake to have been a bit sweeter. The best part of the dessert was the matcha soft serve ice cream.
