I loved the concept, but not the execution. After we ordered, it was a literal 25 minute wait to get a drink to go. Insane if not made aware ahead of time. When I got my drink, the matcha was delicious but I ordered a banana pudding matcha. There was barely any and so it had no real banana flavor. TLDR: order the delicious matcha but go on a weekday.
Matcha En was located in a Chinatown plaza! I'm not sure if there was a parking lot but we just found street parking. The plaza had a lot of other businesses that would make a fun side quest day. There were a lot of options here but I was excited to try the pancakes. I would try it again if someone else wants to come. Staff: (3/5) Sanitation: (3/5) Brown Sugar Boba Crème Brûlée Pancake (4/5) The pancake was pretty good. It was fluffy for sure and the crème brûlée sauce was good, I would definitely say the more sauce the better. The brûléed sugar on top was a nice texture change as well.
a matcha lover's paradise!! The matcha latte creme brulee was quite sweet, but I was content with the bitterness as well. We ordered a matcha cake with red bean inside/green tea mousse which was also not too sweet. We had the matcha dango which was freshly made, be prepared to wait for it. I would love to come back and try their other options but this is a must stop in Chinatown!!
We stopped by Matcha En in Chinatown for the first time and ordered at the counter since we weren't sure what to try. Located in Chinatown Square near the entrance closer to the Walgreens. The cafe only has a few tables and a nice ambiance. Menu was extensive. I went with the Matcha Crepe and a side of Vanilla/Matcha swirl soft serve. The crepe was beautifully made -- soft, not dry, and layered with plenty of light matcha cream between each thin layer. It had a strong, authentic matcha flavor without being overly sweet. It came with a side of red bean, which was a bit too sweet for me, and a side of matcha cake, which I actually loved -- I'd definitely order that cake on its own next time. If you're a true matcha fan, this dessert is for you. 8/10 The soft serve was creamy and smooth, though a little too sweet for my taste. Next time I'll skip the vanilla swirl and go for just the matcha flavor. 8/10 I would definitely go back and try the other desserts.
We stopped by Matcha En about half an hour before they closed after having some dim sum at MingHin. We ordered on the kiosk after browsing the very large menu - they have a lot of ice cream options, drinks, and other desserts. The display case is fun because it shows what the (fake) versions of many items look like. I got the hojicha and ube ice cream in a cup, and Nate got the matcha and vanilla ice cream in a taiyaki fish cone. It took awhile for our order to come out. The store was a little messy and needed stocking, but again they were near closing. I was really excited for the combo of hojicha and ube since those are flavors that I enjoy and don't get a lot of back home, but unfortunately the ice cream really didn't have much flavor at all. The matcha and vanilla was a little more flavorful, but still not as much as I was expecting. We also thought it wasn't quite cold enough as it melted super fast (which made the taiyaki cone very messy to eat). Overall it's a cute spot but I don't know if I need to come back.
The Hojicha flavor was sweet and strong but the ube was so-so. The matcha latte underneath was just not it. I can barely taste any matcha flavor. The matcha soft serve on the egg waffle had an odd sour aftertaste, was more runny than the other flavors and again no matcha taste. When asked about it, the staff looked like they were questioning the taste too but said nothing was wrong. They just gave us separate cup of vanilla soft serve. The egg waffle was dense, not crispy and also felt undercooked. We enjoyed the vanilla soft serve. It had a good consistency, was fragrant and not too sweet.
If the namesake is matcha, the matcha has to be good. Spoiler: the matcha was not good. I had been craving matcha since going to Gathers a few days prior and had high hopes for Matcha En. The inside of the shop was not very inviting, the tables were sticky, and the large screens behind the counter that at one time were used for menus now played random television shows (but without being rotated horizontally). Service was fine. The matcha latte with oat milk I ordered was essentially tasteless except for the unpleasant oat milk taste. I detected very minimal hints of matcha, a far cry from the latte I'd had days prior. I couldn't even finish half before tossing the whole drink, which cost $8+. I won't be back.
If you are a matcha lover you have to try this spot! It's a small shop with a few tables! I ordered ice cream and it was ready in a minute! I got the matcha/vanilla soft serve with ube powder! This was amazing! The texture of the ice cream was very good and the matcha flavor was perfect, not too strong not too light! The ube powder was a fun touch but couldn't taste it
I couldn't believe how busy this place was. But when I got my drink. I immediately knew why. It was delicious. And well worth the wait. The staff were very friendly even though running around busy. They greeted everyone that walked in. And took the time to say thank you when they left. I'll be back for sure.
Quite literally one of the best desserts I've had in Chinatown!! If you're a fiend for matcha like I am, this is a great spot. I've had several different desserts here but nothing compares to their matcha float! You get the best of their soft serve and their matcha drinks! You choose 2 flavors for your soft serve swirl. I picked hojicha and ube, both of which were individually delicious and actually tasted strongly of their flavors, and together was incredible! The swirl floats in a matcha latte, and the matcha itself tastes high quality and pairs really nicely with the soft serve. The latte part is the addition of milk which is layered at the bottom of the float (you can choose the milk), and matcha is the top layer. There are also a few floating pieces of mochi that add a nice texture without making the dessert too heavy overall! I couldn't recommend this float enough!! It's perfect for a hot summer day when you're feeling indecisive or overwhelmed by all the choices on the menu. You get to try their drink and their soft serve in one! It gets super busy so I recommend snagging an open table as soon as you see one, and you can actually order via the QR code on the table instead of waiting in line!
Dare I say... this is the best dessert place in Chinatown!? Their soft serve is just superior!! They have so many matcha / ube options, which are hard to come by. My favorite item was the matcha towel cake. I really thought it was going to be a doughy texture from how thick it looks, but it was more like a crepe. It was so soft, every bite just disappeared in my mouth. The only thing that makes me hesitate coming here is how busy it gets.. I get the hype though! It's loud and crowded usually, but worth it for dessert :)

As wandering around Chinatown, we wanted to stop in for a dessert. We ordered the matcha cake as it was recommended from the girl behind the counter. If she doesn't hesitate, it's definitely worth trying! They have some seating inside, which is kind of awkwardly laid out as you can't walk past some tables without accidentally hitting someone else. However, there was plenty of space to sit, we enjoyed it. The only thing I didn't love is the matcha powder being a bit too bitter for the sweetness of the rest of the cake. Though, I think that's just all personal preference, it was still delicious. read more
After lunch, went to try MatchaEn and had Black Sesame Slushie! I thought it was good, but I wasn't able to finish it because I was pretty full. Good black sesame flavor, kind of an earthy peanut butter. The place was definitely busy, here on a Saturday afternoon. read more

About a 1-1.5: Too bad, Matcha En - I really wanted to like you, but what we ordered were just not good. We came here having lunch in the area, and we looking for a good place for some dessert/drinks. Since our group were fans of matcha anything, we decided to give Matcha En a try. I liked how the menu looked, as it was neon green and very aesthetically pleasing - they offer ice cream soft serve in a cup or a cone (Ube Mix, Matcha Mix, Vanilla, Ube, or Matcha for flavors), cakes (such as Milk Cap Cake and Cheese Mousse Cake), milk teas and lattes, fruit teas, smoothies, hot beverages, and even a tea pot service for dine-in guests. We ordered: +the Cumulus Cloud - this had a weird artificial flavor with a paste-like consistency; the drink was not good; also, it didn't look like anything like the pictures, which was the main reason why I ordered it! +a Matcha Red Bean smoothie - seemed very runny +an Ube in a cup - this looked the most appetizing of the orders; the adding of the toppings were kind of confusing, as you'd think you'd be choosing from the following list, but I guess all of them were included? The staff were kind of stand-offish, and with the soft serve in a cup snafu, it wasn't really explained clearly of the ordering process what it came with. It's a cute little shop, but down the alley, there are more bubble tea shops unless you want desserts. I came here on a rainy day, and even though the rain stopped, there were few people. The black sesame smoothes lacked a black sesame taste, and the ube towel lacked ube flavor, but it was nicely presented. read more

Another new dessert spot in Chinatown specializing in matcha desserts but also various Asian-flavored sweets. You order at the counter and are given a number and there are some cute tables to sit at. Matcha soft serve with topping add-on mochi balls ($0.50 for three mochi balls) was really delicious! Strong matcha flavor, smooth texture and the mochi balls were nice and chewy but not nearly enough for the extra cost. Went here while strolling China Town and didn't know what to expect but I'm so glad I chose this place for my sugar craving! The cake was absolutely amazing and the icecream was so creamy and delightful. The service is fairly fast despite it being busy. I definitely look forward to the next time I can come here to enjoy a treat. read more
I frequent this spot often whenever i'm in Chinatown. Their matcha is amazing in any form that you get whether it's a drink, ice cream, or one of their many desserts! They offer a handful of other non-matcha items too. I got a Strawberry Float with Matcha and Vanilla ice cream. It was good and definitely hit the spot. We also got a lychee jasmine tea which was also refreshing. Service is average and when it's busy, it can take awhile if you're not ordering a soft serve cone. You can order with the front staff or on their kiosk! Every time i go it's always poppin' so if you are looking to go on a busy weekend, you might be able to snag a seat! This was our first time here and it was fine. We got the strawberry matcha latte and creme brûlée matcha boba. The total was around $17 before tip. The drinks were nice but I thought a tad pricey, but it adds up as their cones were $7. Flavor was nice of both drinks but once both were merely matcha, they were dull. Super cute dessert spot , couldn't find a table inside but was able to get out soft serve very quickly and take it outside. The soft serve was great, the Ube was incredibly lightly flavored and tasted more like vanilla but still delicious. You can also add on a bunch of different toppings for .50 read more

This is a great little dessert place! It's right in the heart of Chinatown and they have so many great options for desserts. They have a small seating area, where you can wait if you order dango as it's made to order. I think my favorite thing I tried was the ube pudding, but the dango was also very yummy. The dango took longer than expected and they gave me a free dessert to make up for it! The staff was so kind and apologized. Will definitely be going back to try some of the other stuff on the menu. read more

I saw this place on Instagram and as a diehard matcha lover, I was really looking forward to giving it a try. We came around 9pm on a Saturday to a bustling store - there were a few tables here and there opening up, so the three of us were able to grab a small table in the corner quickly. We ordered the ube dango, matcha cheese mousse cake, and a strawberry matcha latte. The ube dango was quite good - they cook it to order, so it took it a bit of time, but it came out yummy and warm. The flavouring was not too strong / sweet, and the portion size was decent. Strawberry matcha was not bad, either - a little on the sweet side, but nothing too untenable. The matcha cake, however, was really disappointing. When we got our order, the guy mentioned that the cake might be a little frozen, so wait a bit before eating. This was the understatement of the century. When I tried to cut a bit off with a spoon, the cake was like a brick, and my spoon just bounced right off. It took so long for the cake to soften that we didn't even eat it at the store, but rather we took it home and ate it later. Unfortunately, the wait was probably not worth it (especially for the price) since the cake was not very tasty either. The matcha flavour was a bit artificial and the texture was a bit strange (unsure if this was because of the frozen-to-melted condition of the cake) - not at all what I expect cheesecake to feel like. A bit of a letdown, overall, especially for how much I love matcha. Nothing was particularly bad (although you could argue that the cake was not quite edible at first), but for this price I would much rather go elsewhere for a nice dessert. read more

My daughter recommended this dessert shop in Chicago's Chinatown. Definitely worth the trouble to get there! When I walked in, immediately noticed the display of various desserts, cakes in the front display. It's so difficult to choose which one to order! I wanted to try all of them! I debated between the boba, the cakes, the smoothies, and the ice cream. I ended up getting the UBE Frozen ice cream because I love Ube. It was delicious! Creamy, smooth, not too sweet ... just delicious! Cashier was very polite when I asked him about the different flavors, and generally about the desserts. The place is not very big, but they have plenty of seating and tables, both for small or bigger parties too. I definitely recommend Matcha En! Go and check it out! read more

I had a blast exploring Chicago's Chinatown. Matcha En is in the heart of this strip of businesses. I ordered a chocolate shake and it was delicious! Matcha En has a huge variety of treats from matcha drinks, crepe cakes to ice creams. I settled on their matcha red bean roll cake as I've been craving it! The cake is light, fluffy and not too sweet, the whipped cream filling is the perfect ratio and also not too sweet. The green square in the middle is matcha mousse cake which is more dense and has a stronger matcha flavor. There wasn't much red bean (maybe like 3 beans haha) but everything was so balanced and I loved it! You can either order on a kiosk or at the counter. I came here four times in the span of a week :') (in my defense I was visiting Chicago and four different friends wanted to drag me here). The service was quick even though it's usually super busy. The matcha crepe cake was my favorite-- the taste was strong, but not overwhelming and had a good balance between bitterness and sweetness. The ube crepe cake had a very subtle taste and I was a bit disappointed at first, but it really grows on you. It's a good palate-cleanser when combined with the more flavorful matcha desserts. My friend ordered the boba cake and I had a few bites. It was also super tasty. read more
China town has SOO many dessert options and this is my top 2 !! I like brining out of town friends here and it's always a hit! The fish desserts are picture perfect and delicious. The matcha is so creamy. Prices are reasonable and parking is easy to find. It's also a nice place to sit down for a date. read more

I would have to say that this place is just okay and way overpriced for what it is. The food drinks were very pretty, but did not taste as good as they looked! -The mochi was still very frozen and not soft at all. -The staff forgot about our dango and we constantly had to go up to the counter and ask about it. Each time the staff would say "5 more minutes" but we ended up waiting a total of 45 minutes for it and it was so hot that everything melted and just fell off the stick -The milk cap cake was good, but I thought it would be a lot fluffier than what it was - The crème brulee matcha latte just tasted like a regular matcha latte, but I did enjoy the strawberry matcha latte! Probably won't be returning here next time I am in Chinatown! read more
This place specializes in matcha (which makes sense given its name). I prefer drinks over ice cream, so that's what I ordered. What I think makes this place unique from other boba shops that have matcha is that you can order matcha drinks that don't have milk/dairy/cream/aren't "lattes". But yes, they have those here as well! I got the matcha yuzu which tastes like a matcha lemonade--worth a try if you've never had! It's quite refreshing. The space is quite popular, so it can be pretty crowded. It's hard to hear your order being called so make sure you're watching the corner where they place the drinks that are ready. read more
The service team deserves all the hype at Matcha En! Such dedicated and hard working people. It was a super, and I mean people lined out the door "super" busy Saturday night, and the orders were coming out so quick one right after the other. (5/5) There are so many different boba/dessert stores around Chinatown, but Matcha En has some magic potion that makes their boba taste so much better. It was so fresh, and the kind of drink that you can't stop sipping on. We got the taro and crème brûlée boba teas and the earl grey tea pudding. The matcha had this mellow grassy yet nutty taste with a touch of bitterness that came together so well with the sweetness of the crème brûlée. The drink truly had a punch of flavor with every sip. The earl grey tea pudding was delicious. It had a coconut topping and you can truly taste the tea flavor. (5/5) The place itself is small and seating can be limited, but otherwise it is decorated nicely and you can order through the kiosk or the counter. Mmmm, we got started on our mille crepe kick and found Lady M because of how good these mille crepes were. If you're in Chicity and want tasty mille crepe cakes (passion fruit!! Peach oolong!!) that are asian-inspired, wowwww these are the bombdiggity. We got the matcha towel cake and the peach oolong mille crepe cake, and honestly I wish we just got one of each of the crepe cakes and skipped on the towel cake lol! The towel cake was delicious, but the mille crepe cake was infinitely better. For those of you who devour mille crepe cakes, peach oolong is a rare flavor indeed, and Matcha En does a stand-up job at it! 5/5 would definitely eat again. read more

Finally! I finally made it! It was a hot day out so this was nice to cool down with. It's still fairly new so even though it was close to closing time, it was still busy. My friend and I got the soft serve. She got the mix soft serve in a cone and I got the mix soft serve in a cup with cornflakes. The sweetness was perfect & good definitely satisfied my sweet tooth craving. The cornflakes was a good balance. I definitely want to come back and try the other items on the menu! CHICAGOS first matcha dessert cafe Matcha En just had their one year anniversary and as you can see in the video it's a HIT. You can get flavors beyond matcha like ube, peach, sesame, and more! You have to try their if anything, I got the parfait so that I could have the yummy cakes, crunchy cornflakes, red bean, and more! It's the only spot I know that has multiple flavors of (the last dessert) that's a chewy mochi. They made the whole thing in matcha flavor (green inside) with a slightly sweet cream dipping sauce, matcha powder and red bean. So good! Yummy! I ordered the ice cream swirl with half matcha/half milk ice cream and it was so good! Probably the best matcha ice cream I've had so far in the Chicagoland area. You can definitely taste the strong matcha flavor and the milk ice cream is a nice flavor complement which balances the matcha nicely. The swirl ice cream was approx $6, which is pricey, but honestly the serving is huge and could easily be split between two people in my opinion. I saw in prior reviews that some people were unhappy that the center of their ice cream swirl was hollow. I personally did not have that issue on the day that I went, I was given a generous scoop of ice cream that was solid through and through. I'm happy to see that the business is reviewing feedback and responding constructively. Overall would definitely come back again for the matcha swirl ice cream! read more

When I visited this restaurant a few months ago, it was called Kyo Matcha. Now I see that they are going by Matcha En on social media, and the storefront at Chinatown has an updated sign with this new name. I am not sure what happened behind the scenes to prompt this name change, but I am definitely curious! Honestly I am not a huge matcha fan and I haven't had a lot of experience trying it, but I am always open to new things. We tried the Matcha Towel Cake, and it was definitely an experience lol! It's not a flavor profile I tend to seek out, but I'm still willing to try some more of their offerings to see if it will grow on me. It's in the more modern strip mall part of Chinatown, and it can definitely get crowded! read more

New, hot matcha place that is capitalizing on the trend and doing it well. ATMOSPHERE/ARCHITECTURE: 8/10 Modern aesthetic inside with small amount of seating, probably accommodating 10-15 people. SERVICE: 8/10 It has always been busy the few times that I came here, but service is generally quick with the staff being friendly and knowledgeable of the menu options. FOOD: 9/10 Overall, I must admit I was quite impressed with the offerings that I have tried so far. Matcha Latte - 8/10 - I got this with additional mochi. This was a good drink overall, but value wise was way overpriced. Matcha Soft Serve - 10/10 - This was an awesome ice cream/soft serve dessert. The matcha flavoring is good and not overpowering, making for a perfect combination. This is the dish I would come back here for. VALUE: 6/10 Most of the menu items are rather pricy. The one that is overpriced is definitely the matcha latte, at ~$8 with the additional of mochi being $1.50?! Kind of ridiculous to be honest. PROBABILITY OF RETURN: 9/10 The soft serve is good. 5 stars for the soft serve ice cream because it's perfect level of sweetness for me and it's deliciously milky creamy - crowd pleaser indeed. I personally do prefer a little deeper and more bitter matcha flavor, but that's not easily found in Chicagoland and not as universally appreciated. Toppings I like are the oreo crumbs, mochi, and red bean. The boba was not a good pairing with the ice cream IMO. Brown sugar boba cake is excellent but it was easily inhaled at a hefty price tag of $12+tax. Skip: - Crepe cake - the crepe was a bit dry so the texture was unpleasant. But flavor is there. - Hokkaido Cheese cake was a disappointment and was no where close to the real LeTao cheese cake I had in Hokkaido. The dairy flavors didn't come through as much as I like and the cake was not as smooth and creamy as the real LeTao cheese cake from Japan - Matcha Latte was a made very lazily. There were clumps of matcha powder in the drinks. Seems like matcha powder was dumped in milk and quickly shaken and served before all the matcha was fully mixed in. read more

The interior was such a cute, homey feel. My friend and I really loved the simple lights and green color around. We ordered the matcha drink (matcha over water) and the creme brûlée matcha latte. I recommend 50% sweetness because the matcha drink was still a bit too sweet for my preference at 50% but it was still very good. I could tell the matcha quality was authentic. Good green color, not dull or clumpy, and very smooth. My friend ordered the creme brûlée matcha latte and she agreed that 100% is too sweet , so if you're a sweets person, 100% is probably fine but if not, go for 50%. Matcha drink: 8/10 Creme brûlée latte: 8/10 The servers were like when I asked what kind of drinks were what. We orders off the kiosk so it was simple and easy.
