They gave a few recommendations but we're easy so we got some beers. Food was great, we got the mini burgers and pizza. It all came out in a timely manner and the bartenders were on it. My tour bus made a stop at the mall and I decided to try Matchbox because I was starving. My waiter asked if I wanted water and I declined. I asked if he had a pomegranate margarita and he said yes. So I ordered that and chicken fettuccine. It was good, the service was good but it was not worth the price of the meal. The margarita was not strong at all! I think their specialty is pizza so I'll just stick with that if there is a next time especially since the bread that came with my pasta was so good! read more

Popped in here for a burger and drink while my partner was shopping at the mall. It's your standard sit-down pizza place, with a bar. Would have given it a 3 star review since overall it's "fine" and nothing special, however the place reeked! Particularly by the bar, it smelled a mix of cleaning products and sewage. We went there around 1:30pm on Saturday 4/26 afternoon; me, my husband, and our son. Upon arrival, the place was complete chaos. There were some ladies in the foyer area about ready to throw blows. They were yelling and getting heated. We slipped by quickly, only to encounter the completely unhelpful hostess. We had to yell for her to be able to hear us because the music was insanely loud. A volume you'd find at 11pm at a bar/club on U Street, not during late lunch in Pentagon City. When she could finally hear that I asked how long the wait was for a table for 2 adults/1 child, she shouted back that: "There is no wait because it's reservation only." Anyone who looked around could see many open tables, and anyone who has worked in the restaurant biz knows that YOU ALWAYS keep a couple of tables open for walk-ins. Especially at a location that's attached to a busy mall. At the very least, she could've offered bar-seating only but nope. She made no offer to help or accommodate. Appalling lack of customer service skills, and it was apparent she had no interest in making any effort. My husband really likes the food there. I'm indifferent. But now, after this ridiculous experience, we will never give them our business ever again and will share our experience with all of our friends, besides anyone reading this post. I don't frequently write negative reviews but this experience was so ridiculously bad that I had to share it publicly. We ended up going to Wagamama in Clarendon. Thank GOD it was a civilized environment with no fights about to break out in their facility and great service. I don't know about you, but companies need to earn my patronage. This is the place to go for a good drink/beer and great pizza. Although I usually get the pear salad which is a bomb 10 out of 10. I recommend the Guavarita with your favorite Tequila. Thanks to a fab bartender I alway go to the bar for seating in order to save a seat for more than 2 people. read more

We wound up going to get food elsewhere but did come back around 5 pm to see if they were open for HH. They were but the hostess started by telling us one of the ovens was down and we could only order certain things off the menu? I went to Matchbox for their happy hour menu, but I ended up getting 3 things NOT on the happy hour menu! And it was a solitary worth it. I had the Hibiscus lemon drop ($14), fire & smoke pizza (one of most popular) that was written as being 'spicy' on the menu, and the chicken wings with old bay dry rub. The wings were crispy with minimal fat (which I love!), and the pizza was more on the thin crust wide, which really helped keep the focus on the unique flavors of this pizza-- Gouda cheese, peppers, onions, garlic purée, chipotle pepper tomato sauce, and basil. I would absolutely get it again. And the hibiscus was a nice twist on the traditional lemon drop. My server was also great! My chicken sandwich, ordered on lettuce, was so dry that I could barely cut it. It also lacked the chipotle mayo. I requested the mayo, and after waiting more than five minutes, I gave up and tried eating the chicken. It finally arrived after a second request and at the time we simply gave up on the meal. This was our first time coming to Matchbox, this was also Father's Day. The service wasn't the best, our server was working several tables, our food came out late and our food went to a different table. My dad's food was nasty he got the crab and shrimp fettuccine, the shrimp wasn't cooked and they also ran out for crab and didn't mention that to us. They took forever with everything even our simple drink orders. I enjoyed my food to an extent all of my noodles weren't cooked thoroughly. The manger came and fixed things but it took even longer for the correct items to be brought out. My mother had to ask 4 different employees for a refill and it didn't come until we were about to leave. My mom and sister enjoyed their food though. Maybe it was because of the time we came because they ran out of everything ! But your experience might be different but I wouldn't recommend coming on a holiday. read more

However, since we were staying at the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City, I thought we would give it a try again when my husband was craving pizza. My husband custom ordered a pizza while I had their mini burgers (doused in shoestring onion rings) and we shared some buffalo wings. The little burgers were perfect - I liked them because they are basically bite sized and the buns have a tasty glaze on them. The beef was also cooked to perfection with a little tiny amount of cheese - it was the perfect size, personally I prefer this size to actual sliders as there is less bread. The wings were good, and while they weren't anything I had never had before I actually thought they had tossed them in the right amount of buffalo sauce. My husband had a pizza made specially to his liking and thoroughly enjoyed it - it is worth noting that the restaurant has a woodfire pizza oven. The restaurant is a chain, and is basically fancy American pub style food - aside from my initial critique of being greeted, I thought the prices were too much, and for example the wings were way overpriced. I went there lunch time on a Saturday around 1pm. The restaurant was not extremely busy but they seemed to have a couple of large parties. Pros: Food is delicious Tuna tartare tacos is a must try Their veggie garden pizza is good Cons: -Service was bad. At first I thought it was a staffing issue which would have been somewhat understandable considering it's a nationwide issue but it was more of our server issue. All other servers were attending well to their tables and outs was no where to be found. We didn't enjoy our meal and $100 went down the drain. He never provided us with plates for our appetizers, our food took so long to come out especially in comparison to other tables. -The restaurant is dirty. We sat next to an area that is dusty . Visited for lunch with 2 others on a Friday when Matchbox opened (best time for low noise and low crowds). I ordered the garden veggie pizza substituting the cheese with a vegan cheese. I was very excited to see on the menu as I didn't want to default to the usual vegan option (veggie/black bean burger). Also happy that I could do this with the margherita pizza too. I'll have to try that next time. The pizza was big enough to share (which I did) and had a good taste. Not spectacular but no complaints. The other two guests who came with me had the crab cake sandwich and Buffalo wings which they enjoyed. Service was fine, only dislike is that I had to track down the waiter (when it wasn't busy) to get the bill. Ordered some shareable plates and happy hour specials, which also wasn't as cheap as I thought it would be. Calamari was crispy but oily. Not a lot and definitely needed more seasoning. I did a brunch gathering for my fiancée on August 26, 2023. The staff was wonderful, kind, and accommodating. A lot of restaurants are rude and act as though they are doing you a favor by letting you buy their food, however, Matchbox was not following that trend. The All American meal was great. However the staff was so calm and claim they didn't see anything. The manager finally came to acknowledge and share that pest control was coming as they didn't know where they were coming from.. my issue is that none of the staff came over to see where the rat ran or then continue to claim they didn't see it.... Matchbox in Pentagon City is perfect for a date or a big celebration with friends and family. All their pies are super light yet crispy. Each is packed with flavor and I highly recommend trying any one of their specialty pies. I ordered the Fire + Smoke with a side of ranch. The Fire + Smoke was absolutely amazing with chipotle purée, roasted garlic, onions, red peppers, smoked gouda, basil, and a zesty tomato sauce. The pie was cooked till well done with a light char. We did the bottomless mimosas add on which you can pair with either the bottomless brunch or just an entree. Bottomless mimosas: this is a great option but a bit confusing. It is a $25 add on but it is not actually bottomless to my understanding. We were told the option just gives us one bottle of champagne with separate juice per person. The positive is you do not have to wait for refills after each glass as you are brought the bottle up front. Monte Cristo: this sandwich was absolutely amazing. The "bread" was actually French toast which was a meal itself. The filling contained cheesy scrambled eggs, smoked turkey, and bacon. The combination was absolutely divine. Service: the waitress was extremely nice and patient as we had a larger table. There were some longer wait times to get food, utensils, etc. but overall it was fine.
