They are deleting negative reviews from Facebook. I really wanted to like this place. The restaurant itself is beautiful! I ate here as a dine-in customer last summer (June 2020). My daughters and I tried the margherita pizza, 369 burger sliders and spinach and artichoke dip. We didn't like the food enough to return. Our pizza was burnt yet cold when served (outside on the patio in June....so it shouldn't have been cold) the spinach dip didn't have much flavor and the burgers were dry. If you want good pizza and much better price and service, try a local favorite: Anna's Pizza no 5....the place is a dive, but the pizza will not leave you disappointed like Matchbox! read more

I found my new favorite salad at Matchbox, fried chicken Cobb. A generous portion with all sorts of yummies in it. Corn, bacon, avocado, cherry tomatoes, eggs and crispy romaine. The fried chicken was juicy with a nice, non-greasy coating. It came separately to keep it hot and was a large portion. I also appreciate that it was packaged in a recyclable container. Price was very reasonable for such a high quality salad. I perused the rest of the menu and can see other items I will be ordering soon. read more

We almost didn't try Matchbox despite our love of the DC locations, simply because of the negative reviews. However, we were very pleased with our experience! Our server, Jon, was attentive and friendly and even allowed me to substitute my first drink (which I was disappointed with) for a prickly pear margarita which was delightful. We had 4 of us and each person was happy with their meal which included 3 different pizzas and the black bean burger. We liked this much more than our previous experiences at Midici and are glad to have good dining in Stonefield. We will be back!! read more

The food is very overpriced just to be below average tasting. It is very easy to tell that none of their ingredients are fresh and they do not even make the effort to try to make it seem like anything is fresh. We were grossly disappointed in how the food tasted compared to how it was priced. The only good thing about this experience was the fast service. Horrible service. The guy in red shirt does nothing up front. Had a request said he would take care of it never did nor did he communicate back to us at the table over 15 min passed. I love Matchbox in DC and Nova, but the standards at this location don't match up. The staff seemed disinterested throughout our meal, including the manager. The food was sub-par. Our pizza was so soggy you couldn't keep up the slices and had so much onion (and I love onion) that you could taste nothing else. We also had Old Bay French fries but somewhere along the way they forgot the Old Bay. When we expressed our concern the manager literally shrugged his shoulders. I was hoping fir something good but was ready to settle for mediocre since our favorite restaurant at stone field closed and the rest are now mostly burger joints but we were shocked to walk in and see how similar it was to the pizza joint before it! Almost ZERO atmosphere! The pizzas weren't great either but at least it was super expensive with NO LUNCH MENU. The ingredients did seem higher quality and the beer was cold but we won't be back. It would've taken very little to make that place 1000x better(round booths to create cozy spaces, hanging plants to break up space, etc) and offer a lunch menu! We dropped $60 on lunch and each of us had a 10inch personal pizza which was very light and not filling and two beers and I think a side dish but I can't remember. In any case it was a bummer and I'm giving 3 stars for the waitstaff who were terrific-friendly and prompt. read more

Two stars for the previous visits that I actually enjoyed my visit to the Matchbox-Charlottesville. My visits today was disappointing to say the least. I was the only person seated in the outdoor dining area, and I placed my order as soon as I was seated (Lemonade and a sandwich) because I was in a rush and needed to go back to work right after. 5 minutes later and two more tables got occupied and right after they were served (water, wine, cocktails,...) and I still didn't get any service.! I asked the server if there's something wrong with my order, or why my drink was delayed and two other tables were served before I got any service, he apologized and said that he will get my drink right after. I had to leave the Matchbox before getting any service because I didn't have the time and really had to go back to work ASAP and had to skip lunch today. I had enjoyed my previous visits to the Matchbox. I'd come here for HH and some work lunches. But after my experience today, I'm hesitant to come back. read more

We ordered two beers, two simple salads and a 14 inch pizza. The pizza was just short of burned to a crisp and had mediocre toppings. For this lunch for two, we spent over $71 with a tip. Wow...just had one of the worst interfaces with an "owner" of a restaurant ever. These guys are really struggling for business, and the service and quality reflect that struggle. You should check out some of the other reviews before booking a table or ordering from Matchbox. The owner Maurice was completely unhinged over a $6 mistake his staff made...told me Grubhub was to blame and since they take 30% of the bill as a fee, he couldn't refund for the mistake. Best of luck to Matchbox...used to be a great place with amazing pizza. Stopped by Matchbox in Charlottesville after a movie at the Regal in Stonefield. Matchbox is a chain with a number of locations throughout VA and while I heard it was good, I'd not eaten there so decided to give it a shot. Menu was fairly short with the waitress saying that they hadn't been open for long and the menu would be expanded in the next several weeks. Ordered the burger which was very good. Medium rare double patty on a brioche bun with cheese. Was very tasty; not greasy or dried out. Companion had the crispy chicken sandwich which was reported as excellent. Shredded cabbage in lieu of lettuce really made the sandwich interesting. Fries were excellent as well. Service was pleasant and the atmosphere hasn't changed much from the previous restaurant (that restaurant went under and, if you read my previous review, you'll see why!) Beverage list is short and prices fair for a restaurant. All-in-all I will definitely return and we'll see what the expanded menu brings. read more

I have give this restaurant three chances. Even before Covid they never have all the items. The prices are extremely high for the quality of ingredients. 2 small crab cakes mostly salty filling for $28 is very disappointing. What they are offering is nothing compared to the Short Pump location. It shows that the other location cares. I gave a third chance and just got pizza, they told me 20 minutes I came in 22 and the pizza was literally cold. No one asked me if I wanted crushed red pepper cheese nothing just another expensive box of cold food. This restaurant was Midici's prior and it was the same thing, expensive without a care for quality of ingredients and a high level of customer service. Operating during Covid is exposing weaknesses in restaurants. There are many to choose from so restauranteurs should remember that we do have choices what makes you stand out. read more

We've eaten here three times and each time was a bust. Service has been incredibly slow each time with waitress/bartender disappearing for 15-20m at a time. All three times i've ordered the margherita pizza and all three times a manager has come out to tell me it came out wrong and had to be refired. For a pizza place, you'd think they could make it right the first time without a 60m wait. The third visit was the last straw - while in the bathroom with my daughter, i saw a staff member come out of the stall and leave without washing her hands. Gross! read more

I was seated outside at my request. It took 35 mins for someone to come and take my drink order, they were not busy. someone came to bus another table and I requested service. The owner came out, apologized and said he would personally take care of us. I never saw him again..This matchbox is overpriced 6 small wings at 16.00... but I eat what I want, the service suck. A small pizza was 19.00 and pepperoni was burnt and all of the ingredients weren't on it...I was attempting to support my Black owned business, but will never return to this establishment again l. Not only did the owner not provide any form reciprocity for the lack of customer service, his wait staff says he was surprised no further discussion was had between the owner and self. I walked away feeling had I been of the opposite persuasion he would have taken every step to ensure I was totally satisfied and a return customer, but not with me. Why, was it the color of my skin?? Surprised to see bad reviews here. I never came when it was Medici. Only after it converted to a Matchbox. I'm giving it 4 stars for some very specific reasons but I will add that they have a lot of room to improve in terms of service, responsiveness, etc. I've been here three times now in 2020. Always sit at the bar and always order the Cauliflower crust pizza - which is, to my utter surprise, excellent. !st time I came, I was going to order a GF crust pizza but the bartender suggested that the cauliflower crust was better. Skeptical but I went with it and he was right. It's really good. Crisp and light and flavorful. Without all of the carbs. So, for that, I am a fan. I haven't had anything else on the menu so can't comment of the rest of the options. Now, for the negative: For a place crawling with servers and bartenders, the service is abysmally slow and/or clueless. I have had to wave down my bartender every time I want a drink. usually the bartenders are all huddled with the servers at the end of the bar socializing. They are not paying attention to customers - the place is usually 1/4 to 1/3 full. And the prices are high. For wine, for food, for everything. I really like that crust but if it weren't for that, I probably wouldn't bother coming back. read more
