    Cajun Chicken Fettuccine
    Katlyn H.

I visited Matchbox in Reston with my book club and it was okay. The restaurant was pretty empty but the service was super slow. The restaurant had already closed and we still had to get someone's attention to get our checks. We shared some of the honey butter biscuits, I would highly recommend them they were delicious. I got the Cajun chicken fettuccine and the portion size was huge, I had lunch for the next day. It was really tasty too, it had so much flavor. The location is at Reston Station, so the parking situation is a bit complicated. They might have parking validation but they were closed when we left so I wasn't able to check.

Nachos: Warm. Hearty and warm. Not bad. Just nowhere near its highest potential. Chili nachos is actually an incredible idea. I like beans with chips. I don't know what kind of jalapeños these are but they're everywhere and it's alarming. I could've sworn jalapeños were smaller. These ones are so big I wonder if they're genetically modified. That would make me sad. All else: my coworkers wanted to go to Top Golf but mama a storm was brewing. Thank God though. Well, minus the fear of climate change fueling brutal rainstorms. Anyway I've never played Golf nor do I look like someone who'd be good at golf. I was manifesting pizza and nachos and Mother Nature (the Russians who control the weather) heard me. Wrong higher entity, but somebody heard me and granted my wish. Waitress was sweet. Restaurant was hot, as if they had the heating on.

Hot Artichoke Spinach Dip hard to cut the mozz at the top, but the dip:bread ratio was just enough

5 stars for the service; very friendly and helpful, 2.5 stars for the food and drinks. Unfortunately, the food was a bit below average for the price point. I ordered a cocktail at the bar; $14 for Jim beam a ton of ice and it was pretty sour. Just didn't seem worth it to me. Again, service was kind. We had a big party, and I really want to commend the waitstaff for managing everything so well! The peach lemonade was very sour and only had a hint of peach in it. Artichoke and spinach dip portion is pretty small, but the logistics of cutting the bruleed mozz top with a spoon was not easy. The dip and bread were fine. Arancini was decent; crispy outside, inside was a fine risotto texture, tomato sauce was chunky. Scallops were cooked ok, but the sauce was deeply overpowering. Sour; which felt like it was from a strong white wine. The sauce/mashed potatoes were one and the same so I tried to use my fork to separate the corn and bits from the sauce.

We finally got to this Matchbox...wanted to go sooner but, so many restaurants, so little time. In the past, we've been to other Matchbox restaurants including the Mosaic District, One Loudoun and the one in the Eastern Market area. In all of them, service was consistently good. This one in Reston also was good. One thing we liked about the Reston location was that the tables were better spaced than the others. For example, the Mosaic location was like eating in a restaurant in Manhattan. We were so close to a couple sitting next to us that we ended up engaging them in conversation. So...I give kudos to those who designed the one in Reston. We were here on a Saturday around 5 p.m. and the place was dead. No one was even sitting outside despite there being a large dining area that included its own separate bar. Inside, we saw one person sitting at the indoor bar. At the host station, a woman came by promptly and asked if we wanted to sit at a high top table or a regular one. We chose a regular table. She took us to an area and said to choose the spot we wanted. Our choice was a 4 top table which gave us room to spread out. I have to admit that at all the Matchbox restaurants, we end up getting the same thing --- 6 sliders cooked "pink" (as they put it) with American cheese. Plus we get a small Margherita pizza. Much as their entrees sound good, we can't resist the sliders and we know having the sliders and a main course would be too much food. Our server was prompt in getting to us. He was friendly and efficient. To drink, I had a watermelon lemonade while my husband had a lite beer. We gave our server our entire order at once. The drinks came out quickly. The watermelon lemonade didn't have much watermelon flavor, which is to be expected as the lemon flavoring is the more dominant of the two. Still it was a refreshing drink, sweet but not too sweet. One thing I have to ding them on --- both the sliders and the pizza came to the table at the same time. On other visits to different locations, the sliders always came first, then followed by the pizza. As always, the sliders were really good---juicy and flavorful. The pile of onion strings on top didn't disappoint as they were crispy and fried perfectly. The Margherita pizza looked more like a cheese pizza as we saw very little of the basil and there were no fresh tomatoes on it. In the end, the pizza tasted just fine so no complaints. We noticed that the place does a good takeout business as we saw kitchen staff more than once bring bags to the front of the place. Eventually, another couple was seated in our section. Perhaps it gets busier as the evening progresses. Definitely, we will return. If you park in "garage X", be sure to park in one of the reserved spots (which you will see after entering the garage). Hang on to your parking ticket and before you leave the restaurant, the person at the host station will validate it.

Made a reservation for an early dinner for 4 on a Saturday night at 5:30. It was pretty empty, so no problem seating us right away. Our waiter was friendly and attentive, and came out with drinks quickly. We ordered the spinach artichoke dip, the ginormous meatball and my son had a cup of cream of crab. The artichoke dip and fresh made chips were very good. My son enjoyed his soup. The meatball was just ok. It was a little spicy (not in the description) and had WAY too much garlic. It was also served with a large flat garlic bread. For dinner my daughter had the cheese pizza. I've always known matchbox for their pizza but she described it as "mid" (teenage speak for nothing special). My son has the chicken fettuccine and enjoyed it but he'll eat anything. Husband had the chimichurri steak frites. His review: "Good sauce but meat was dry and in pieces rather than whole steak which was not stated on menu and underwhelming." I ordered the crab cakes. The only plus was that there was no filler. The seasoning was overwhelming and took away from the taste of the crab itself. My biggest critique is the menu. It seems like the types of dishes are all over the place...is it seafood? Italian? American? I feel like they should do a few dishes well instead of many just ok. Not sure we would come back, other places to get better meals.

    Table of 6 just left...

Service was AWFUL today. Food took over 45 min to come out. Sat at the bar watching other patrons come in and leave due to no service at tables and bar. We sat with empty drinks and no explanation for the delay in service. The table behind us waited over an hour for food and ended up just walking out. Just absolutely awful service. The place wasn't busy either. When our food did arrive, my fries were cold and they weren't old bay fries like I ordered. Will never return.

I came here on a date night. Nothing crazy, a Thursday night at the bar seated area. It wasn't super busy. The service was quick, pizza tasted fresh and good, drinks were good. I have no complaints! I'd come back!

Just not good. I've been to the Matchbox in Merrifield, and I loved it. This one just doesn't meet the same standards. We came around 10:30 am on a Sunday morning with my husband and his family, a total of 6 people. When we first got there, it was still fairly early and maybe a table or 2. They asked if we has reservations, which I always laugh a little when it's that empty. Luckily they were able to seat us right away even though we did not have reservations. We opted to sit outside as my in laws are still a little cautious about covid. We ended up having to move tables to one under the covering (still outside) because it started raining a little. They waiter was friendly and took our orders. The food took a LONG time for a place being so empty. It was surprising and a little annoying. When the food came out, it was eh. Very lackluster compares to the Merrifield location. I did the brunch deal and got the spinach and artichoke dip along with the all American breakfast. The spinach dip was okay, needed some salt and was a little bland. It was a full portion though. The American breakfast was eh. I had asked for over easy eggs, they gave me over hard. It took so long for the food to come out, I didn't want to risk having to wait even longer for corrected food. It's the little things and details that make the meal great. They took so long to bring things out. My mother in law ordered tea and they forgot to ask what kind of tea. Had to come back and get her choice, then when she asked for more cream, that took a ridiculously long time to come out. We parked in the garage but they made no mention of validating our parking or asking where we parked, so we had to pay for that as well when we finally realized. When we sat at our first table and asked to move when it started raining, the waiter told us they knew there was a 100% chance of rain in the forecast and that's why they hadn't even bother setting up outside. Uh okay, then why didn't you seat us at a table under the covering to begin with? Hopefully they train the staff a little bit better to make it a more enjoyable experience

As soon as we entered, General Manager Sam welcomed us like old friends. After we were seated, my wife asked if he had previously worked at The Dabney, and sure enough, that's where we recognized him from. It was great catching up as he shared what he'd been doing since then and how his dream had always been to open his own restaurant. Seeing that dream come to life made the evening feel even more special. The restaurant was busy (definitely make reservations), but we were able to enjoy cocktails while we waited for our table. My Grey Goose martini with bleu cheese olives was phenomenal and set the tone for the rest of the meal. We started with the Bison Tartare and the Ceviche. The bison tartare was leaner than traditional beef tartare, and the crispy chips added the perfect savory crunch. The ceviche was incredibly fresh and bright. For our entrées, I had the ribeye while my wife ordered the Dory. The ribeye was cooked perfectly--juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. My wife couldn't stop talking about how buttery and delicious the fish was. To finish the evening, we ordered the 100-Year Port Flight featuring 10-, 20-, 30-, and 40-year ports. Vertical tastings are such a fun way to experience how a wine evolves over time. The 40-year was absolutely outstanding, and the 20-year was another favorite. The 10-year was enjoyable but still showed its youthful character compared to the older vintages. The atmosphere strikes a nice balance between upscale and relaxed. The main dining room can feel a little tight when the restaurant is full, while the bar area has a few TVs for anyone wanting to catch a game. One thoughtful touch that stood out was the women's restroom being stocked with amenities like hair ties and hair clips. We noticed they also offer a tasting menu, and after this experience, that's already on our list for our next visit. Between the outstanding hospitality, exceptional food, excellent cocktails, and welcoming atmosphere, Evelyn Rose absolutely earned five stars.

We had a so-so experience with takeout at this Reston location a couple of years ago, which prevented us from returning sooner. Overall, we found the food here solid, tasty, and reasonably priced. The dining room was surprisingly full for 6pm on a Thursday evening, but we were seated immediately nonetheless at a comfortable 4 top. Service initially seemed a bit inattentive, but once someone actually took our order the staff kept on top of clearing plates and making sure we had what we needed. As we were particularly hungry, we ordered 1 arancini and 3 pies. The arancini comprised four tasty fritters of breaded and fried rice stuffed with chunks of tender, caramelized eggplant and smoked mozzarella cheese. The crisp on the parcels could have been more pronounced, but the flavor from the ingredients made for a nonetheless satisfying bite. The pizzas here are technically individual sized, though I find them slightly small for someone with a hearty appetite. The crusts here could have used a bit more leopard spotting and fermented tang, though had a tender crumb and a decent chew. Of the three pizzas we ordered, we most enjoyed the red Diavola and the white Onion Tart, the latter with our own addition of roasted corn. I appreciate that Pupatella offers a bounty of classic and unconventional toppings, which allows for ample customization without boredom. Overall, the pizzas here do not surpass those at our favorite Neopolitan joint in the area, but the proximity to home, more customizable menu, and family friendly vibe will ensure a repeat visit in the near future.
