Material Girl was my favorite fabric store. I could always find what I wanted! Sadly, Material Girl is now closed. I have not found a quilt shop that even comes close to the wide variety of fabrics and the excellent quality of the fabrics at this former shop. read more

Just before I gave up on Material Girl altogether, it was taken over by a new owner. I only found out because I noticed changes like more classes, new classes and the ability to finally be able to pay online without having to find time in my day to make a call to share my credit card information, and better customer service on the phone. It made me ask if there was a change in management and was pleasantly surprised to hear, "yes!" I didn't have any idea how quickly someone could turn a business around from a place I really didn't care for but had limited options for an alternative to a place I ENJOY going to. Communication- you now actually get responses to questions via email within a day! Store- new owner actually took feedback from her customers and re-arranged the store. Now if you take a class, you are not shoved into what I would call a storage room. Classes are now in an area of the store, but doesn't interfere with those shopping. Customer Service- Absolutely amazing! Some previous staff still work there and I could tell how much happier they are at their jobs now. This seems to have translated to overall better customer service. Classes- I'm happy to see more "non-quilting" classes and the prices remain reasonable. You now also get class reminders and list of materials needed, in a reasonable amount of time before your class date. Kudos to the new team at Material Girl! I'll be signing up for more classes throughout the year and buying more fabric. read more

I'm new to quilting and this place is awesome! Warm and inviting from the first moment you enter. Very helpful. Meg patiently helped me choose some fabric for a project. I looked lots of other places, but this was THE place. Got the perfect fabric. Couldn't have asked for more. It is my new go to place for fabric. read more

I took an English Paper Piecing Class at Material Girl today. It was outstanding. Laura was very informative, knowledgeable and a great instructor. Not hooked yet, but I am really intrigued on learning and doing more. read more

Amazing fabric selection! Up-to-date fabrics. Obviously the owner doesn't keep fabrics forever, so he/she has room to update the selection. I looked everywhere in the northwest and western suburbs for a specific color, blush. I found it in this store only. So many fun and fanciful fabrics along with the classics. The price of the fabrics vary, $12.99 per yd or less. The best quilt fabric store I have ever been to, ever!!! I live in Arlington Heights, worth the hour drive. read more

Old school fabric store, and the best one outside of Chicago if you can't make it to Fishman's downtown. The people here are wonderful and helpful, they have an excellent selection of fabrics and trims. read more

Cute store with a great selection of traditional and modern fabrics. I would have given five stars if not for the employee with short hair and glasses who kept coming over by where I was shopping and muttering to herself about the huge mess she'd have to clean up later. I barely touched anything. Normally I just leave stores with rude employees, but the fabric was beautiful and irritating her became fun. Maybe they'd prefer having an orderly store without pesky customers to mess it up. read more

Beware of the ladies measuring yardage. I asked for multiple yards for background fabric, she wrote down the number I requested, but cut a yard short. This isn't an easy shop for me to get to so I'll have to raid my stash to see if I can figure out a work around. Not a huge problem, but the staff could step up their attention to customer needs/requests. read more

Material girl used to have a large selection of fabrics. It is under new ownership and has about 1/3 of the fabric it used to have. The children's section is sparse. All the lower bins are empty. She only had a few bolts of wide backing to choose from, all neutral solids. Slim selection of same pattern in many colors and nothing in primary colors. The lady that was Cutting the fabric was of no help. It used to be my favorite place and now it is not worth the trip. read more

I love the fabric selection at this store! They have fabric you just can't get around here & have to purchase online most of the time. However, I have to agree with the first reviewer... They never spoke to me & I was there almost an hour! When I finally found what I wanted, the uncomfortable feeling of being ignored took over & I didn't buy anything. :(. I love this store. It's beautiful. Dropped of my high end sewing machine for service. It was tuned and ready in a week at a very reasonable cost which included a repaired needle threader. The store was great about communicating the service status. Very friendly help. Definitely returning and highly recommend. read more

I would love to share a warm fuzzie story about finding the perfect fabrics for the baby quilt I was asked to make.... BUT I made the mistake of not verifying their store hours before I entered the frount door. "I hate to be rude but..." Rude-ness came in the form of being told they were closing in less than 10 mins. Next Sunday I will drive to Bellville WI. That trip will take about the same amount of time and gas.... and they will as always welcome me and my quilting needs AND not be "rude". read more

I was a bit daunted to go to this store given the other Yelp review. But... They have an amazing selection of fabric, and were so friendly and helpful, even on a busy Saturday. I highly recommend this store for projects that need better fabric than is available at chain stores. read more

This was the last time I will shop at this store. I have been in the store numerous times and the staff was very unfriendly, never helped me nor do they even say hello. But Saturday, was the straw that broke the camel's back. I quilt quite a bit, belong to a quilt guild and I am also starting to make quilts for other people--I buy quite a bit of fabric. While I was in the store Saturday the women with short gray hair and glasses walked right by me with her nose up in the air. I said excuse me--still her nose in the air--excuse me again--she turns around and says very rudely I am with someone. All I wanted to do was give her some scraps that they give to a local animal shelter. Never again! read more

I love, love, love this store. The fabrics are beautiful! They have so many project kits that you can buy and make at home, or you can take one of their many classes. I've taken three and getting ready to sign up for another. Even though I'm an accomplished sewer, I always learn a new sewing trick and it is a great way to actually finish a project. The staff is always friendly, helpful, and very busy so don't hesitate to ask for help. read more

I have shopped at this store a lot. The fabric selection is great. Generally the staff is helpful and friendly. I have found that my shopping experience is dreadful when the clerk with the long dark hair is working. She is rude. Unfortunately the staff changes daily and I avoid the store specifically because of the one clerk. read more
