First course I played that had wild turkeys roaming the course.

Played Mather Golf Course yesterday for the first time. Had a tee-off time around 7am. First impression, the facility looks good. Did not check out the restrooms but they have them in the main building. Pro shop was decent and the guy working the register was friendly. The course itself was in pretty good shape. Nice fairways, greens were in great shape (though I couldn't judge the speed all damn day) and this course is fairly generous to beginners and intermediate players. Not a lot of hazards to worry about as far as losing balls. I shot a 115 and didn't lose a ball the whole round. There's only one hole with a water hazard (the water looks pretty yucky; looks more like an outhouse runoff). I spotted a couple of hydration stations on the course, but no dedicated bathrooms. I did see a porta potty at one point, but I don't really consider that a restroom. It's more of a last resort to avoid peeing or pooping your pants. That'd be my only criticism is to maybe have a small restroom structure between 9's. Outside of that, we all had a great time and with this being a former military course it was cool that the golf carts were all named after military jets. The tee boxes were also little bombs or missiles (although at one point I thought one looked like a goldfish cracker). I would definitely return and play Mather again. At $64 a person it's a little steep, but it was a well-kept course and that included a cart so I'm guessing if you walk it's more affordable.

I have brought my children to this range for instruction. The instructors are nice and knowledgeable. Good with kIds. They have a lot of patience and really take the time to try to show them the skills needed to be successful in golf. The course itself is also nice. They have great weekday early bird specials!

    Cordova Golf Course

Cordova is a classic old-school muni layout. The pluses for me are :…read more1) Reasonable pricing, Senior discount available. 2) You don't have to rent a golf cart if you don't mind walking, it's a shorter length course overall ( please Ignore this comment when the temperature gets over 90 !) 3) Small practice putting green and large driving range available. 4) They do have a small restaurant, with patio seating available, and alcohol is served :) 5) Friendly staff, from the pro shop, to the rangers, to the restaurant staff. There are no water fountains on the course, but there is a cooler available at the Driving Range, plus on hotter days, a Course Ranger drives around in a golf cart with a big water cooler on it. 6) The "old school" muni course feel. I grew up on courses like Cordova in the Chicago area, and because I'm now officially an old fart, I'd much rather play a fun muni I can still walk, just like Cordova, than play a ridiculously hard upscale ("expensive") course (like Apple Mountain, close to me) that Army Rangers would have a tough time walking ! The minuses for me are : 1) I like to walk on, instead of having a tee time, since I have about a 45 minute drive, and can never tell how busy the roads I have to take will be - plus I can never guess if the course is going to be really busy or not ( and watch out for high school golf teams in the afternoon), as I like to play fast, and you WILL encounter some slow groups (and usually when it's so busy that you can't play through !) 2) Although there's plenty of grass, and a lot of it is in good shape, (kudos to the Groundskeeper !) some areas are either way too wet, way too dry, or way too much dirt instead of grass. 3) It is a shorter length course overall, so don't get a big head if you think you're hitting it longer all of a sudden ( you're not, the holes are just shorter !) 4) Grass conditions (and/or lack of grass) can vary widely from hole to hole, and even shot to shot) as you can end up in a nice patch of fluffy country-club quality grass, to a real soggy area, or to #$@% rock-hard dried mud. But c'mon, it's a busy Muni, don't complain, just consider it part of the experience ! 5) Bunker conditions can also vary widely hole to hole, from basically hardpacked cement to wow, this is a nice trap ! 6) Although the rangers do a great job driving around offering cold water on warm days, I literally never have seen a ranger get involved in dealing with slow play groups. But overall, Cordova gets two thumbs up from me !

Tee'd off at 4 o'clock for the first 9 and had a great time, came back around and asked if we could be fit in for another 9 and the starter said it was no problem. Fast forward to when we tee off the second nine and the starter put a group of 5 ahead of us, and a group of 3 or 4 newer golfers and their loser dad. After about 3 holes we decided to ask if we could play through, since at the point the hole ahead of them had completely cleared up. The father of the group responded "Not a chance! We're playing fine you can wait". While this would typically be whatever, it was late in the day and we were hardly able to even finish the entire 9 we played for before it was dark. Really wonderful track but irritating to be put behind an absolute loser with more players than typically allowed!

They offer both golf carts and push carts, which is convenient. The course is smaller in size but still feels spacious enough, making it a great spot for beginners who are learning the game. It's also ideal for walking since the terrain is flat with no steep hills to climb. Despite being a shorter course, it still includes features like a pond and bunkers to keep things interesting and provide a bit of a challenge for golfers. The grounds are very well maintained, and there are plenty of trees that provide shade throughout the course. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming.

I think in every city, there are things they are known for or things that are just iconic about the…read morecity and are truly spots you must visit in order to fully get a true picture of the soul of that city. In Sacramento when one brings up the golfing scene, the true mecca of golf in Sacramento begins and ends with Haggin Oaks Golf complex and Driving Range. In this review I wanna talk specifically about the driving range. My history with this range goes back pretty far,all the way back to 1996 when I moved to Sacramento from the Bay Area and didn't know a soul-so after work, especially on weekends with not much to do,I spent many a Friday and Saturday nights at the Haggin Oaks Driving Range working tirelessly on trying to perfect this game that is truly impossible to perfect. Over the years many things have changed at this range but a lot of very important things have remained the same, including a quality practice facility with well maintained mats and tees, along with quality balls to use when practicing at this location. Some of my favorite things today that they have that for sure didn't exist back in the 90s is the Top Tracer displays available at every practice stall which provides you with endless options for however you want to practice-be it golf games or serious data tracking to evaluate how far and straight you're hitting the golf ball. This facility is extremely popular,I would say it's the most popular range in Sacramento-if you come here on any random Friday or Saturday,no matter the hours,I guarantee this place will be packed, though there are so many practice stalls available,a spot will open up pretty quickly. Another thing I love about this spot is the ability to try out clubs in the pro shop before you buy them for free-you just go into the pro shop and find a club you want to try, then register with the pro shop guy and then just take the club out to the range for a quick practice session before deciding on purchasing the golf club. Haggin Oaks also has both a food truck on the premises and a bar stand where one can buy various alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks to enjoy while working on your craft. Personally I've never bought any food from the truck but I do see people rave about the quality of their food offerings. This facility also has 3 separate putting greens one can use to practice their putting game-along with a separate area one can use to work on their chipping skills for free. I will admit this place isn't the cheapest place in the area to practice when it comes to the price of the balls, but I would say their prices are competitive with most golf courses and when you include the quality of this facility,I would say Haggin Oaks is unmatched. 25 balls cost around $6,while a large bucket of 100 balls run around $22. In closing-if the idea of trying out this game I love so much has ever crossed your mind and you want to come to a family friendly, skill friendly, wallet friendly environment-Haggin Oaks is your spot. Come on out and try this beautiful game of ours called golf.

It has been lovingly taken care of and highly maintained to its present day perfect state of being in my opinion. Golfing at Ancil is truly a walk (or golf cart ride) along side nature and beauty. Having sooo many relatives and friends who call Ancil Golf their home course is no coincidence. They all love the Ancil history, appreciate the landscape of the course and yes the competitive spirit of the game. I have had the pleasure of walking the incredible fairways and being a ride-a-long with many a golfer. So I know the special nuisances and ambiance of the course. I was recently reminded, again, how blessed the Carmichael community is to have Ancil Hoffman Golf Course as their own very special place of joy! I returned to Ancil recently to purchase a gift card as a Christmas gift. Even though it was cold the sun was shining and the golfers were out in numbers. Turkeys and deer grazing about. And amazingly... I saw a flock of magpies flying from tree to tree. Such rare birds since the Nile virus took its toll. Made my day!
