Played this course recently and would argue the poor comments don't reflect the courses current condition. Despite the poor weather, the course was in great condition and I had an amazing experience playing 18 holes. All the staff was friendly and accommodating, their range has plenty of pads to shoot from and their practice putting green is also very helpful. The views of the mountains with the snow cap as you play is also awesome to witness. Mike, who runs the pro shop here, is also an absolute expert. I brought in a set of clubs I had recently purchased, but they had clearly been assembled poorly--misaligned shafts, a sloppy epoxy job, and very little attention to detail overall. Mike took the time to completely re-shaft them with upgraded shafts and did a phenomenal job. The final result was flawless: perfectly aligned, well-balanced, and with a clean finish--no excess epoxy or shortcuts. On top of the quality of the work, he turned the job around incredibly quickly and had my clubs ready to play again in record time. Mike is also extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely eager to help. As someone who's still relatively new to the game, I had plenty of questions, and he took the time to answer all of them with patience and enthusiasm. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for quality work and great service. read more

The marshals are the absolute worst I have ever encountered. We arrived 2 minutes before our tee time and we're GRILLED for not being 5 minutes early. We should have taken this as a bad sign but we decided to play on as we just spent $70+ each to play here. Every single hole we had marshals on us telling us we're going way too slow and "the pros behind us" we're being slowed down. They literally watched us as we played, and chewed us out for "taking too long". Mind you we were keeping up with the group in front of us. But apparently they just wanted us off the course all together. Turns out they scheduled a tournament literally minutes after our tee time. And didn't tell us until after we already paid. Even the group in front of us commented on how absolutely vile the marshals were here. Literally no regard for paying customers. The driving range is awesome and I'll probably still hit it once in a while, but I'd be shocked if I ever decide to play here again. Do better. read more

My friends and I golf in Sacramento 4-5 x per month and often play Mather. If you've played this course in the past, you know it has a nice layout, usually well maintained and great greens. If you played this week as we did, it is in the worst shape in the 20 years we have been playing here. Greens, literally have some sort of weeks in all 18, fairways below avg and many look like they were mowed with a push mower and tee boxes barely mowed. Just a mess. We wont go back until we hear they are actually trying to get this fixed. During our 4 hours this past Saturday we tried to guess the issue and decided its simple. NEGLECT... Take the money... Played Mather Golf Course yesterday for the first time. Had a tee-off time around 7am. First impression, the facility looks good. Did not check out the restrooms but they have them in the main building. Pro shop was decent and the guy working the register was friendly. The course itself was in pretty good shape. Nice fairways, greens were in great shape (though I couldn't judge the speed all damn day) and this course is fairly generous to beginners and intermediate players. Not a lot of hazards to worry about as far as losing balls. I shot a 115 and didn't lose a ball the whole round. There's only one hole with a water hazard (the water looks pretty yucky; looks more like an outhouse runoff). I spotted a couple of hydration stations on the course, but no dedicated bathrooms. I did see a porta potty at one point, but I don't really consider that a restroom. It's more of a last resort to avoid peeing or pooping your pants. That'd be my only criticism is to maybe have a small restroom structure between 9's. Outside of that, we all had a great time and with this being a former military course it was cool that the golf carts were all named after military jets. The tee boxes were also little bombs or missiles (although at one point I thought one looked like a goldfish cracker). I would definitely return and play Mather again. At $64 a person it's a little steep, but it was a well-kept course and that included a cart so I'm guessing if you walk it's more affordable. read more

One of the worst courses I have ever played. MOW THE ROUGH!!! lost 10 balls and there is no water on this course. I am an 18 handicap but if you are not on the fairway, you cannot find your ball! Trees everywhere and rough that is 2 inches thick. Then mix in the sanctuary areas that are OB. Tee boxes are crap. Oh and thanks for not telling us you aerated the greens. My best friend (wife) and I played Mather Golf Course for the first time in over three years. We met two our friend there and had a great time. The folks in the pro-shop were helpful, courteous and efficient despite being very busy that morning. The golf course itself was in good condition despite the CA drought and wildfire related smoky skies. My girl played from the forward tees and noted several times that she did not get much/if any advantage except for one or two holes on both the front and back nine. From my perspective, the few advantages she received with respect to yardage, more than made up for the fact that most of the other holes were equally spaced out. The pace of play was good. Sand trapes could use new sand or a little more racking. Some very wet spots were noted but hard to avoid in the extremely hot weather and ""green"" fairways"". read more

Layout is nice. I will give it that. Fairways could use aeration to soften them up a little. Greens were nice but not super fast. Great for the average golfer. I think this course has lots of potential. Driving range is good. Hit off of mats. Putting green is above average. Pitching green is somewhat small. Management could do just a couple things and this course would be very nice. 100, 150, 200 yrd markers. Nowhere to be found. Not sure why. They increase pace of play. Started to really agitate me as the round progressed. Also the pins do not have prisms. Which if you use a laser yardage finder it makes it almost impossible to get a yardage. Those two things would take this course to the next level. Restaurant/cafe was average. read more

Not a very well maintained course, the driving range is ok, the mats are not that bad, but the the worst part are the attendants, especially in the driving range. Later in the day, they just decide to close whenever they want to close. There is no set time for closing. Or they just don't follow sceThey all seem a bit rude as well when communicating with people they don't know. Definitely not at all approachable like they really don't want to be working there. Not a single one of them seem to be happy to be there. Also, Chuck F that is very defensive and keeps leaving me messages on here needs to understand the nature of a real consumer review. I actually LOVE this course. Honestly, no it's not a fancy country club and yes it's basically just a run of the mill muni but its really grown on me. I am a member at sierra view and live in folsom but when I'm not playing at my club my first choice is to always play here. The course is well kept for being a basic public course, the range is nice and big with clear distance markers, the golf shop staff, starters and Marshall's are super nice and professional (this is not the case at A LOT of public courses, some places act like it's a privilege to even be allowed on the course and it's very off putting), the track is easy but not so absurdly easy that would get bored, it's a perfect place for a high and low hc to play a round together without one or the other getting annoyed, besides one time (where by bad luck i was paired with 3 newbies that had no idea what they were doing, see rant below) the pace of play is great 4 hours maybe 4.5 during twilight on weekends, but I finished in under 4 the other day with a foursome and one of them walking, and fairly priced tee times...I really love it here. Living in folsom I'd happily play here anyday over empire for the above reasons ONLY complaint is I wish the Marshall's were more, well, stern I guess. I'm sorry man..I dont mind playing with bad golfers I dont really, but at the very least you should at least learn the rules and basic etiquette and understand that you need to "keep up" with the group in front of you...these guys were horrible, I'm talking like getting 12s on holes, holding up the group behind us, driving too close to green, hitting when I'm hitting, standing in opposite fairways to hit their errant shots with others are waiting to tee off, talking the entire time...it was terrible...I saw the Marshall once, it was very clear there was an issue but he just kept going (dude we were in the fairway I was on the green, and there were 8 people on the tee box backed up)...its really the three guys fault not the Marshall's but if i had to state a negative it would be that...keep in mind this is the only negative experience I've ever had there. There's so much to like about Mather Golf Course. I've been playing it regularly for 50 years. Yes, fifty. I started as a Air Force brat when my dad was in the service. But now, with the smallest of decisions, they made the course unplayable for me. Due to COVID-19, we've all had to adept to doing things a bit different. Mather decided that they would set up every hole so no ball can drop into the hole. Other courses have the right idea. They made the hole only an inch or two deep. The idea is to keep our hands out of areas other people have touched. That's cool, but under Mather's method, no one has a clue if they would have made the shot or not. Holes in one are impossible. I was with a buddy last Tuesday who made an ace on hole 12. The first thing he said was that god he wasn't at Mather. Come on Mather. Check out your competition. Ask your guests. Someone screwed up but the fix is simple. Let me know when you fix it so we can come back. Until then, you're off our list. read more

My understanding is my sister was the first to book a wedding here so I was a little worried things would go array. It is a small venue, which was perfect for her because she wanted a small intimate gathering. There was a tournament the day of the wedding, which was scheduled before her wedding was booked so don't get your yelping panties in a bunch for them double booking, she knew. They went a little over and we started a little early but it worked out; the golfers allowed us to take a few pre-ceremony photos on the course and they took a quick break from their round as they hit on the bridesmaids. Hey, give and take people. They ceremony was short and sweet and completely, them. The reception area/gazebo was a charm. Cute, romantic and just enough room to fit their little party of about 100 guest in with a dance floor still. Perfect fit for my little sissy. read more

I'm driving to the Mather subdivision and one of their golf balls hits my car straight on the side. As I was heading to an appointment, I was unable to drive to the course and I called them instead. Their representative said they would try to find the person who hit the ball in that direction, but since they had posted a sign, they relieved themselves of any liability. We all know that 1. No one will admit to hitting the ball, and 2. Their fence is very inadequate, which means that every car driving in and out of their own neighborhood is at risk of being hit and potentially injured in a collision. Hopefully this business can make an actual fence before something tragic happens. read more

I'm new to the game of golf (for crying out loud how did I get myself into this game?!) and Mather Golf is a great course for me. Wide, forgiving fairways, pleasant people, inexpensive fees and good beer at the pub make this course a great way to spend an afternoon. The better players I play with tend to like the course as well: the grounds are well-kept and the greens are nicely maintained - and the good beer in the pub. We especially like going late on a Sunday: Our pace of play is that of a three-toed sloth sometimes and typically everyone just gets along. It's also kid's hour at that time - our kids love running around like wildlife while we hack away. read more

We golfed for the second time at this course on October 9. The staff in the pro shop both times were "stuffy". The starter was a likeable friendly sort. The deal breaker was when we were finishing up the 16th hole when a smart punk kid acting in the capacity of course marshal stopped by and rudely informed us that we "needed to keep up with the group in front of us" and "15 minutes per hole is the pace of play". As he pulled away, we noted that the group ahead of us hadn't even left the17th hole green yet! Our group respects the rules of golf and pace of play. The marshal was out of line lecturing us regarding pace of play when the group ahead was still on the green. read more

I dig this course, but when we've played it, it's rained. I REALLY don't mind playing in the rain, but on our last visit we skipped the last 4 holes due to HARD rain. I want to make a particular note that the Golf/Pro shop is OUTSTANDING. My best shirts, visor, and a couple of gloves have been purchased here. Also, 2 long sleeve (expensive half zip) pullovers. LOVE them both. The fees are a bit steep for us (compared to courses where we live in Placer County.) I do enjoy that they are close to my office, and I can grab a bucket of balls if I feel like it and hit the driving range. ($ 15 for a large bucket, not bad!) This is something I can do on my own, or grab a friend from the office. Lucky to know many Women who also enjoy the game (so that I am not always "stuck" playing with Hubby (although he is my FAVORITE partner.) Hopefully I can get a LOT of driving practice in this spring so when we play together, I can WOW him. Nothing better than a GOOD student! read more

I took Friday off with a few buddies and headed out to Mather for a round of golf. Haven't played out here in probably three years. We used the Entertainment coupon for a buy a green fee, get one free. It only cost us 30 bucks each with a cart. Course was in really good shape. Greens were in AWESOME shape. I am going to be honest, I only had two pars and no birdies. I know, I suck, but I can admit this. I ended up shooting a 112. Yep, that means I was 40 over. Who is awesome? Well, not really me, but screw it, YEAH, I AM AWESOME! Funny thing is I wasn't even the highest score out of our foursome. How sad is that? No, really, that is super sad to lose to me. Anyway, it was a lot of fun and I hit enough good shots to make me not hate golf completely. Mather gets a big ole thumb up from me. read more

Went here for a company event and I had a good first "golfing" experience. It was a well maintained course, and they had all the little golf carts ready and lined up for us. Mather GC is in great shape. I played yesterday morning and everything from the tee boxes, fairways and greens were pristine. I was told the rough was well maintained but I never went there. Ha! The course is long and flat and if you play the tips it is 6700 yards. They have plenty of bunkers that were well placed and I got a lot of use out of my SW. The greens had fair break. This place is great for the beginner and the intermediate golfer. read more

The course itself is OK. Typical city run course in decent shape. Nothing fancy. Very flat. There are some thin spots in the fairways, but the greens are in decent shape. HOWEVER, where this course really suffers is the attitude of some of the employees. In the pro-shop, Alyssa acts like she is much too good to be dealing with customers. Generally rude every time I've been here. Some of the starters suffer from poor customer service as well. Give someone a clip board and a radio and they suddenly become VERY important. The last two times I played here, I felt like I was going through security at the airport. If the TSA is their customer service model, I say:mission accomplished! To be fair, not all the employees suffer from a lack of basic customer service skills, but there are enough to take the fun out of your round. read more

My youngest daughter had her wedding ceremony and reception here. The staff is very friendly, helpful and hardworking. Everything went as plan, the food was very good and very large serving. The desert is very good and nicely decorated. Mather has accommodated all our request and really worked with us on ensuring that everything that they promised was delivered to our satisfaction or better. I really dislike this course. Dry, no amenities, terrible greens, just TERRIBLE! Greens were the same length as the rough. T Boxes are super SEXIST. When I am out there, I know I am playing the course. But me Tee'n off at the same T Boxes with the men? REALLY? Average drive for men is at least 239 yards. Even my 175 yard drive down to the middle won't keep me up with them. Long Par 3s for ladies. 150? Can't use my driver for that? WTH. Smh. I will NEVER play this course again. Especially in tournaments. Oh, where the hell were the restrooms besides the club house??? read more
