I love(d) the First Place coffee truck and still love getting their fun lattes at Matilda's. The staff are super nice, and the atmosphere is gorgeous: beautiful fixtures, lots of places to sit, and a cute lawn to stretch out on, if you're into that. What bums me out about the new spot: 1. Despite having more room for pastries than the truck had, Matilda's offers far fewer pastry options than First Place did. This is disappointing because... 2. An actual meal at Matilda's is quite pricey. $16 for a breakfast sandwich with no side is asking a bit much. 3. If you choose to do some laptop-based studying/work while you're enjoying your coffee or a meal, you're not allowed to stay longer than 90 minutes. This applies on weekdays (when there are plenty of empty tables and many patrons take their drinks to go). This policy rubs me the wrong way; not only is it extremely subjective (I'm guessing bringing a book/notebook wouldn't matter, even though the notecards on every table say the laptop limit is to encourage "community and connection") but in this economy, it's a bit entitled to tell patrons which quiet/independent activity they take place in while spending their limited cash at your establishment. There are plenty of coffee shops in the valley--or even within a few blocks of Matilda's--that don't police patrons who choose to use a laptop or otherwise sit solo at a table. For that reason, I'm happy to stop by Matilda's for a latte to go, but when I choose to cowork with some fellow WFH pals, I'll be going someplace else. read more

We went for dinner. They do have a good espresso martini but what left a lot to be desired was the food. The server presented a special "entree" of raviolo and really talked it up. It was definitely not an entree and more of a small bite appetizer. I left very hungry and unsatisfied. read more

Get in line early! We were here on a Sunday, shocked to see a line had formed around 7:45. It seemed to move fairly quickly with seating options inside, on the lawn and on the porch. We opted for outside and it was delightful. You serve your own water, and food comes to you pretty quickly after ordering. We enjoyed the breakfast sammie and the granola + yogurt bowl. While I can't yet speak to the quality of the food or drinks here, my brief experience cruising through was enough to move me to post about this place. I was greeted with such warmth from every employee when I entered, and one even took the time to explain Matilda's storied history to me. In a nutshell, Matilda's has been operating out of a small coffee truck for the past eight years. Two months ago, this location opened as the owner (Devon) had always dreamed of bringing more than just coffee to the community. They recently started offering dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, but they're best known for their morning/afternoon menu. Devon was making coffee behind the counter while I was there. As a Phoenix native, I love seeing a hands-on owner who really takes pride in their local business. The woman who helped design the street (which contains mostly residential housing) way back when was named Matilda. Although that's not what the coffee truck or restaurant are named after, the owner said that this felt kismet. There are cute seating areas for small and big groups, both indoors and outdoors. Very bad experience. The owner Devin was extremely rude to multiple customers and the food was way too garlicky and over salted. Coffee was also very iffy. She made not only my sister and I uncomfortable, but another couple that was sitting next to us. Do not recommend. read more

Place a little small but super nice inside. For my first time here I had to go with the BLT. 10/10 Bacon was thick but not too chewy, habanero jam was a nice touch. 10/10, would 1000% recommend! This place is so special- the staff, the ample seating, the cozy vibes, and the food... omg the food. That breakfast sandwich is the best I've ever had, and the orange blossom coffee was incredible. The coffee was the perfect sweetness where I could still taste coffee- perfectly balanced. We sat outside on a blanket and I loved the tray tables to use out there. I had my two little kids with me (1 & 3), and i was actually able to enjoy a brunch! It's always nice to find a kid friendly place to eat. Shoutout to the girls who were so sweet to me and my boys- giving us a blanket and playing with my kids. Wow. I was surprised by this new cafe. We got there for lunch on a Saturday and the line was out the door to order at the register. Luckily the line went pretty quickly and we had no problem finding a seat and people came and went pretty quickly. There was also a bar seating that looked like a couple spots were available and people also took to setting up outside to enjoy the nice weather. The service was fast and friendly and I wasn't expecting the food to look so good, which is what convinced me to get the turkey sandwich. I also got an Americano. The coffee was really good and they also had so many delicious sounding lattes, including several they could do with matcha. The sandwich was delicious. The outside of the breast was crusty and the inside of the sandwich was soft and moist with a lot of flavor. I loved the Calabrian chili spread that they add to the sandwich. Really gorgeous space and loveble crew! We did have a mishap with part of our food never arriving. I hope on the weekends they change counter service to full service so things like that aren't easily missed. I felt bad for the servers walking in and out and all around the restaurant looking for table numbers through large crowds especially in the heat. That's fine during the week but weekends are crazy here for brunch especially as it cools down it'll be crazier. This place suffers from aesthetics over substance. Dinner service is a stretch. The appetizers and entrees are lacking substance and portion. The entree doesn't even come with sides. We visited Matilda's two weeks ago & I have thought about it every day since. This place is an absolute GEM. Seriously the best breakfast sandwich of my life. The egg was perfect, the calabrian chili spread was SO delicious & we loved the thick cut bacon. The space was incredibly chic in this gorgeous restored historic home. Way overpriced and there's 3 rooms adjacent to the bar with limited seating. It's probably not the easiest to serve tables without having a decent view of your tables from afar as well. I also wish that you didn't "kindly" ask guests to be booted out after a certain amount of time at a table. I believe GardenBar had that same sort of spiciness toward their paying patrons ..I recommend you don't do that. It's not kind nor is it a good "look". GardenBar is no longer in business so let's not do what they did & go down that path. It gives off the ,"you can't sit with us" vibe from Mean Girls but with a more "urban professional type of feel. Sure, someone orders an iced matcha coffee and parks at a table for over an hour.. Is it really that big of a deal? You want peeps to be coming back for more matcha tea and good vibes. Not spreading word that the owner /or server gives "bombastic side eye" to go on & get! because your 90 minutes are up. I do love that the cafe is in a historical house. As a long-time fan of First Place Coffee, I was counting down the days until Matilda's opened. It didn't disappoint- everything I'd come to expect from FPC shines in their new space from service to ambiance and presentation, and most importantly- taste/quality! The food was wonderful, think classic with a modern twist; thoughtful flavor combinations not dictated by trend. Despite how busy they were on a Saturday morning, the line moved fast, there was plenty of seating, and the service remained genuinely warm and kind- never rushed or harried. Back in February I wrote review on my first visit here, this time I was able to get to dinner. What a culinary treat happened! Three of us shared a unique palate treat starting with the appetizers: charred leek dip-a must, and the Cafe salad so refreshing -unlike any other salad I have had in AZ. Yes setting & staff were competent unassuming but I was there for a culinary treat, which was realized. The mains: pork ribs was a totally unique take (on bed of grapes) and truly finger licking wonderful. When you read chicken on the menu you will never expect the Chef Matt's combination of spices dates capers with lemon and sage. Sounds like allot going on but it all comes together seamlessly on the palate. The third dish we shared was the pork Ragu, delicate a dente rigatoni. Don't take my word for it, please find out for yourself, I will be shocked if you do not have a most wonderful meal! read more

Amazing. We went in at 8am for breakfast when they opened, and there was a line. Hot tip, hit the counter. It's first come, first served and there usually a line to get a regular table. This place is located in a beautiful craftsmen house and has a lawn that they lay out blankets on to eat and relax picnic style if you're so inclined. Service was exceptional and Cassie, Stephanie, and the coffee girl were all smiles and sweet! The food was perfect. Wife had the breakfast Sammie, and I had the soft scramble which came with a delicious salsa. We ordered two Cafe de Gula and they were so good. Go, just go.
