My friend Meg and I have had Matilda's on our list for a while now and we finally made the drive from the Gilbert area to give it a whirl, and it did NOT disappoint! When you walk in, the restaurant itself is a home-turned-breakfast spot that's tucked between some quaint houses in a quiet neighborhood. The lawn is fit with blankets and little trays to sit out front, and the seating is open and accessible. There are plenty of spots to chose from-- private lounge corners, open tables, and bar seating! The employees were friendly, answered all my questions about their matcha, and were super quick to get our food out. Meg got the Honeycomb as an Americano, and I got their seasonal Matcha Colada-- a great option if you are looking for a non milk based drink! These were absolutely delicious, Meg even said it's the best coffee she's ever had and would drive 30 minutes again JUST to get the coffee! For our mains, we got the Breakfast Sammy which actually made my jaw drop. You can add bacon and avocado for extra and I would highly recommend doing so! I am going to be the only person to ever leave a 1-star review of this place, which has a cult-like following, but I have to be real. I had the absolute WORST salad I have ever had in my life. That is a crazy thing to happen, but I am not exaggerating. It was covered in some sort of weird dressing (supposedly a Caesar) that was completely inedible - it was so tart that it actually made my tongue hurt. (Imagine eating a bunch of Sour Patch Kids but three times as sour and without any sweetness.) The toppings were all on the bottom under huge chunks of lettuce that needed to be cut to eat, except the salad was put into such a tiny bowl that you couldn't cut it without sending it all over the table. But the dressing was so completely vile that it didn't matter. I spent $16 on a salad that was impossible to eat. My standards are not strangely high. This was just awful. Maybe it was a bad day. Maybe the dressing had gone bad. I do not know. But it wins the award for the worst salad I've ever had, including the wilted iceberg in sad ranch from a Pizza Hut salad bar in 1999. I ended up eating a piece of my friend's sourdough toast just so I had something for lunch. I had to get back to work, so I didn't have time to send it back and wait for more food. Plus, it was so slammed that it would have been more hassle than it was worth. But after the constant praise I have heard from Matilda's, I left feeling sad. It was incredibly busy, and people love this place, so I will go back and see if it was a weird anomaly. But I will stay far far from the Caesar. read more

Super-cute spot in a beautiful historic home with different rooms, a back patio and a front porch. I hear you can also sit in the front lawn. Lots of cool decoration items to look at on the walls. We went around 8 am on a Friday morning and got in right away, but on weekends the wait can be really long. Similarly, parking can be really tricky. Staff was so sweet - the lady who took our order was super-friendly. We had a giant chocolate chip cookie. It's very tasty and we appreciated the hint of salt. My breakfast sandwich was yummy - I had the avocado inside, with egg, white cheddar cheese, aioli and chili spread. My friend had the Brioche Bread Pudding French Toast. It didn't take too long for the food to come out. And they have decaf if you're sensitive to caffeine! read more

This place is so charming. As you walk in you are greeted with a warm and sincere hello. The menu items all sound delicious. Definitely a whole vibe! Pretty sure I dressed completely wrong for the front lawn - picnic baskets and tables and blankets splayed out like a novelist's dream, including the French style water carafes. I'll know for next time. We ordered at the front and I immediately realized I'd been here before - when it was the uber popular Garden Bar - also impossible to get a table for. Lucked out and got a table inside but had just missed the cut off for breakfast food (11am) so we got the only item left served all day for breakfast and a lunch item (turkey club) on a whim. I had been really excited to try the matcha beverages but was sorely disappointed when I got the Matcha Rose and it tasted like it was flavored with pickle juice of some sort. Definitely had me confused and I had to ask the waiter to shed some light. Ended up swapping it out for the Copa de Oro instead which was not my usual choice since I'm not a fan of orange but wanted an espresso bevy with a kick to match my sammy . I was much more impressed with this on but took the orange peel out. The foam at the top is still heavily orange flavored but I didn't mind this flavor much. It was smooth and presentation is very nice. To be expected, the inside was hard to find a table but we snagged one and had a hard time hearing each other so the community table out back seemed promising with the misters. The only problem were the flies. We were attacked by at least 2-3 at a time and there was a total of around 5-6 just around us. It was probably because we were the only ones left with food outside, but nevertheless very annoying - so please invest in table fans! After we ate, I waited for a box but that definitely took way too long so I just asked a different waitress and then we re-located to alongside the wall right under the misters. Everyone here was so nice, I got lots of recommendations from the workers, and I think Matilda actually brought out my food herself. I didn't think to get the hot sauce until it was recommended to me after we already paid, and they were accommodating enough to give it to us on the house. There was plenty of seating even though the line took about 20 minutes to get through, we didn't have any issues with the first seat. They even have picnic settings outside so you can eat and enjoy the weather while it's still good. Our drinks were decent, and I would say relatively well priced. The sandwich comes with either avocado or bacon, and we chose bacon. I wish it came with greens or maybe a tomato, and maybe that the bacon was crispier. Pro-tip: Expect a long line and tight parking. The potatoes are good to share between two people. Highlights: It's a great place to meet up with girlfriends because of the cute aesthetics and simple menu. I personally love their collaboration with The Dinesaur bakery. Originally wanted the Savory toast but heard they had sold out (@ 10am). No worries, I opted for the Breakfast sammy with avocado instead of bacon. Ordered their cinnamon, honey, vanilla latte which was delicious! Got our number and walked around trying to find a table. Can get very packed with limited seating so be aware! Once we sat down, I got up to grab 2 glasses + a water jug that they have on a mini table for guests to grab. Before we knew it, someone brought us our coffee and food. The breakfast sammy tasted so flavorful! The calabrian chilis, I believe, really upgraded this sandwich. Tasted fresh, packed with flavor, would definitely order again. Went here with a friend on a Friday around 10. There was a consistent flow of customers but not too busy when we arrived. By the time we left, it was packed. Finally made it! I've been visiting First Place Coffee for years and was so excited for this new vision! The renovated house has ample indoor and outdoor seating and a warm, welcoming vibe. With Matilda's, owner Devon McConville has been able to expand the food menu as well as add a spirits menu to the beloved Coffee & Tea offerings of First Place Coffee. I visited today with my daughter and we shared the Breakfast Sammy, Cafe Salad, iced Brown Butter Matcha and iced Tahini Fig latte. Truly, everything was EXCEPTIONAL. The Sammy had multiple layers of flavors and was filling, even when shared between 2 people. The salad was fresh, crunchy, and perfect for a spring day. The beverages have always been favorites as well, so we knew what to expect there! Of note: Matilda's continues to collaborate with The Dinersaur in its baked good offerings, which is always a bonus! I brought a book and a blanket to sit outside and it was the perfect way to spend the morning. I love trying coffee that's different in flavors and they had so many on the menu that sounded amazing. Really gorgeous space and loveble crew! We did have a mishap with part of our food never arriving. I hope on the weekends they change counter service to full service so things like that aren't easily missed. I felt bad for the servers walking in and out and all around the restaurant looking for table numbers through large crowds especially in the heat. That's fine during the week but weekends are crazy here for brunch especially as it cools down it'll be crazier. Been seeing this place all over social media, and it actually meets the hype! My friend and I stopped here for brunch on a Friday around 10am. The line was out the door, of course. We waited about 20-25 minutes to get to the counter and order. Occasionally a staff member would bring out menus for people waiting in line outside. There are two menus - one for food and one for drinks. The food menu is split between Breakfast (8-11am) and Lunch (11am-3pm), though the house special Breakfast Sammy is available until 3pm. For drinks, they offer coffee, tea, and even cocktails. They currently have "winter drinks" which was kind of funny because it's already hot here and doesn't feel like winter. Not all of the winter drinks can be made coffee or matcha - it'll say on the menu. I got the Hazelnut Date Matcha - it was good with a strong nut butter taste. My friend got the Honeycomb Latte (regular coffee drink menu) and said it was the best honey latte she has ever had! Food-wise, I got the popular Breakfast Sammy. Comes with choice of bacon or avocado. I chose bacon, and after trying it, I cannot imagine it any other way. It's a savory sandwich with a bit of sweetness from the glazed bacon. The poppy seed milk bun had a really nice crunch around the edges. It had a Calabrian chili spread that wasn't too spicy. It was just a flavor bomb, and I would totally go back for it. My friend enjoyed her Soft Scrambled Eggs. The toasted baguette was topped with a good amount of parmesan cheese. I tried some of the egg, and it was very fluffy and cheesy as well. There are many tables and some booths inside. I believe there is also patio seating in the back. I saw a lot of people sitting on blankets on the lawn out front as well. Service was great - every staff member was very friendly and patient. The parking situation is not great - all street parking to the point where a two-way street becomes one-way. I came with a big group of friends on a busy Sunday afternoon and we were able to easily order (you order at the counter and they bring the food to you) and find a large table. Circling back with a more detailed review of my experience. I love to try every new spot in my neighborhood so I finally made my way to Matilda's. Matilda's puts a 90-minute time limit on tables. Yes, at a coffee shop. So if you're thinking about grabbing a coffee, opening your laptop, and getting some work done, think again...you may be asked to leave once your time is up. I unfortunately experienced this policy first hand. I decided to walk over from my building after seeing this cafe on social media and would've been better off skipping this one, because I like to grab a coffee, a bite to eat, and work on emails. This isn't a Michelin-starred restaurant with a waitlist around the block. It's an overpriced coffee shop serving average food and coffee. The policy feels completely out of touch with what people expect from a neighborhood cafe. While I was inside, I tried their savory toast and L.E.O coffee. The food was okay but nothing memorable, especially for the price. The service was fine until I was asked to leave because my allotted 90 minutes was up. Phoenix has no shortage of coffee shops, and many of them actually welcome customers who want to sit, work, and enjoy the space they've paid to be in. Turning away locals over a timer seems like an odd business strategy. Good luck during those long Arizona summers when every customer counts. read more

Tried this spot for the first time today and really liked the vibe super chill and cozy, perfect for hanging out with a drink and some good food. Love how they are pet friendly We got the yogurt granola with coconut yogurt and it was sooo good. I did end up finding a hair in my bowl but I let them know right away before I ate it and they brought me a new one. I can say the exchange was a little awkward. Kind of a quick grab and go with not much of an apology but I appreciated them replacing it. We also ordered the thick cut bacon, which was really good. While I can't yet speak to the quality of the food or drinks here, my brief experience cruising through was enough to move me to post about this place. I was greeted with such warmth from every employee when I entered, and one even took the time to explain Matilda's storied history to me. In a nutshell, Matilda's has been operating out of a small coffee truck for the past eight years. Two months ago, this location opened as the owner (Devon) had always dreamed of bringing more than just coffee to the community. They recently started offering dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, but they're best known for their morning/afternoon menu. Devon was making coffee behind the counter while I was there. As a Phoenix native, I love seeing a hands-on owner who really takes pride in their local business. The woman who helped design the street (which contains mostly residential housing) way back when was named Matilda. Although that's not what the coffee truck or restaurant are named after, the owner said that this felt kismet. There are cute seating areas for small and big groups, both indoors and outdoors. That breakfast sandwich is the best I've ever had, and the orange blossom coffee was incredible. The coffee was the perfect sweetness where I could still taste coffee- perfectly balanced. We sat outside on a blanket and I loved the tray tables to use out there. I had my two little kids with me (1 & 3), and i was actually able to enjoy a brunch! Wow. I was surprised by this new cafe. We got there for lunch on a Saturday and the line was out the door to order at the register. Luckily the line went pretty quickly and we had no problem finding a seat and people came and went pretty quickly. There was also a bar seating that looked like a couple spots were available and people also took to setting up outside to enjoy the nice weather. The service was fast and friendly and I wasn't expecting the food to look so good, which is what convinced me to get the turkey sandwich. I also got an Americano. The coffee was really good and they also had so many delicious sounding lattes, including several they could do with matcha. The sandwich was delicious. The outside of the breast was crusty and the inside of the sandwich was soft and moist with a lot of flavor. I loved the Calabrian chili spread that they add to the sandwich.
