This place is FANTASTIC if you're looking for a good, quick and inexpensive happy hour. They have a super affordable happy hour deal with the sushi and appetizers and I was honestly pretty impressed. Food- I tried a few different sushi rolls and they were all pretty good. The only thing I would say is they need to be packed together a little tighter since they seemed kind of flimsy but the flavor and texture were both there. Drinks- I had saki! I chose a cold Saki since I prefer that with sushi and it was delicious. It went down smooth, tasted great and had a decent ABV so ;). Atmosphere-The atmosphere was great. We were greeted right away and the individuals who work there were all SO nice- probably some of the nicest people I've ever met. It's the gem of a place (of which we are blessed to have many in town) that is quaint, charming, reasonably priced but with amazing food and friendly service. Sushi and Japanese food has a special place in my heart, being 1/2 Japanese. I had bookmarked this place a long time ago and finally made it out there. Matsu sushi bar is located in a strip mall and is small in size. There is a limited seating, but that's ok! We walked in and were warmly greeted by a pair of sushi chefs who were working the counter. They happen to be cousins and owners of the place. They are both very cute, so it's some nice eye candy while you eat. It didn't even bother me that they were Chinese guys making my sushi ;) Their waitress had called in sick, so the owners were pulling double duty between making sushi, taking orders, and delivering food to tables. We ordered the Phoenix roll (white fish, fried in the roll, covered in a sweet sauce) and it was delicious! It was my husband's favorite of the night. We also ordered the tempura combination plate. It had shrimp, chicken, sweet potato, broccoli, etc... It was all good except the eggplant, which I never think makes good tempura because of it's high water content. Our food came out fast and was very good. What didn't I like? The chicken fried rice was bad. Yes, I know, it's a Japanese place and what are they doing with chicken fried rice?! - well the guys are Chinese and I figured they did a good fried rice, but I digress. The rice was completely overcooked. It was mushy. I would never ever get it again. I was really impressed with the friendly attitude the two cousins have. What cons can I say? hmMm NONE! The small and quaint sushi bar offer quality sushi, great specials, and wonderful customer satisfaction. Run by cousins- Ryan and Terry--- they provide a delectable sushi experience. Their lunch specials (Bento boxes) are generously priced and plentiful. I really like their miso soup b/c it has plenty of tofu and seaweed in it, where I have experienced very few tofu/seaweek in other resturants. Sushi roll selections are unique and filled with flavor. It's so hard to just choose one! I really liked the Astro roll, Flaming Dragon, and Rocket Roll. Definitely give those a try! The guys are pretty creative so don't hesitate to ask for them to modify to your liking. The kitchen selection-- so far I was able to try their Fried Rice which was YUM! and shared the bulgogi bento box which I too enjoyed. (YES! bulgogi-- korean!! haha). The bento box does come w/ white rice, miso soup, salad, 2 pork dumplings, and 2 piece sushi roll so.... enough to share or be really really stuffed. I suggest sitting up at the sushi bar to get a better experience but the table service is just as great. Attentive and friendly service all around. Remember, this is a tiny place so when it gets packed--- it gets packed! There is a small waiting area to wait for the next available table. Matzu has become my favorite place for sushi and hh. For us, it's a whole city away because we live so far up north. But for price and the nice service, it's all worth it. It's a smaller restaurant, partly because this whole covid/ social distance, they're not allow to have too many tables. Their hh is by far the best I've seen here in Houston. They got selected sashimi piece for $1! And the cut is huge and thickk! Ofc appetizers are BOGO. You can get hot sake for $2.50. You can easily walk out full and happy within $20 per person. One of the worst sushi place i have ever tried. I would never never come back in any chance. My friend and I ordered rocket roll, 212 roll and flaming dragon roll. They all were nasty. The rice wasn't soft Fish wasn't fresh Ginger sauce was very mediocre. Service was as bad as the food. The sushi was fresh and offered at a decent value for lunch. The special was 8 pieces of a "special" roll that was little more than a tuna roll. The wrap wasn't secure and the rolls tended to fall apart as you took them from the plate. There were also 4 pieces of sushi. Standard stuff. Shrimp, tuna, salmon& escolar. Good sized and fresh. Lunch service was fairly prompt. The waitress was courteous. Most substitution requests were answered with "ok, but there's an upcharge". All in all, Matsu is an average sushi restaurant.
