Everything was delicious. The saba and salted salmon were highlights. There was only one other couple in the restaurant on a Monday night and we got there about an hour before closing. I've been going to matsuyama for tempura udon for 10ish+ years. Their udon broth is the best in town by far. It's light but still flavorful without being too salty and they top it with lots of veggies. The tempura comes on the side and is a generous portion size with nice variety of veggies. Went tonight for a quick dinner on the way home from SF. Service was perfect, just like always. The Server has been there for as long as I can remember and she is attentive and friendly and always does a great job. read more

Was a bit concerned as we walked in as we were the only customers on a Saturday but to our surprise we had a great sushi experience close to home! All the fish tasted fresh. They also had butter fish aka white tuna (not many places has this usually and tend to sub this with Albacore). Rolls are priced fairly between $15~$20 which is about the ongoing price. What was over the top is each dish is beautifully presented. You do not get this kind of attention to detail at any busier establishments. Our server was on point as well, she went the extra mile and help us narrow down the best rolls for our taste buds. Sadly we let the bad reviews prevented us from eating here earlier. Rest assured. Went in with my mom today for lunch. We loved our Bento box with salmon and chicken Katsu . The salmon was so flavorful and fresh, the chicken Katsu very crispy. The rolls we ordered were very tasty: crazy monkey & red dragon. I wish they were a little smaller in size but at least they aren't huge like most the sushi in stockton. My first time here was about 2 weeks ago, I ordered in the restaurant and took my food to go. They had a good variety of choices and I am such an indecisive person, especially with food. I ended up ordering the dinner bento box with teriyaki chicken, California roll, and salmon sashimi. Included miso soup, rice, and salad. Oh my gosh. I was so satisfied from this meal! Food was fresh and hot, sashimi slices were thick and yummy. Price point wasn't bad at all, the portions were just right. Because of COVID, the tables and chairs were stacked up by the walls. There were three employees working at the time. The lady who took my order was friendly and nice. It took about 15 minutes. I will definitely be returning. Came to this place while visiting an office close by where I work and wanted to try it out. Overall, it was a good visit but not spectacular and not bad. The food was good but portions were small. I'm from Texas and maybe I'm used to larger sushi rolls and little more sashimi on my plate but that was not the case. Overall the food had good flavor and would consider Visiting this place. Stopped by around 1:45 and I believe like at 2:00. When my group of 4 walked in and we asked to sit down they looked at clock and we asked where do we sit? You all are still open right? The lady reluctantly went ahead and said ok sit down. Not sure this is the best customer service approach when trying to grow a business. I ordered my food through DoorDash yesterday. I mostly enjoyed my bento box. The entire meal was filling and had great flavor. The only downfall was that the chicken was a little dry. The teriyaki sauce saved the day. Overall, I was satisfied with the portion, cost, and taste. I will gladly order from here in the future. Solid spot for Japanese basics...I hadn't been here in quite some time just because I have a closer option and I'd honestly forgotten that I really do like the food here. I happened to be running errands in the area and suddenly remembered that it was nearby. We walked in and the dining room was almost empty so we were seated immediately. We decided on a bento box and the gyoza appetizer to split. I also added a miso soup so we could each have one. Our food came out piping hot within about 10 minutes which was great because we were both pretty hungry. The gyoza, tempura and miso soup were all really good. The teriyaki chicken and California roll were both ok but neither were the best I've ever had. Overall it was a good dining experience-food was good, came out quickly and our server was friendly and attentive. Definite win! read more

I was a bit disappointed with the price (doubled) of the new Bento box as well as its size. ( They said it's the only size they serve) Their menu pic still shows the old size which includes edamame and larger portions. It's unfortunately par for the course of the economy now. read more

Monday, March 10,2025. 4:40 PM I'm not the type of person who likes to write bad reviews but, this one I cannot hold back on. Tonight our waitress was very impolite. I should have gotten her name and called the manager but, I didn't want to spoil everyone's evening. I ordered the bento box with tempura & beef teriyaki, beef medium rare. The meat was served cold and rare, the tempura looked and tasted like it came off of someone's plate from lunchtime. The waitress was waiting on another table, so I waited. She came to check if everything was ok.....here's the funny part... I mentioned if I could kindly get the meat cooked a little more. (I was willing to put the meat a little sauce bowl I hadn't used because of health regulations) I just wanted it to be microwave for 45 seconds....I wasn't asking for a new dish. She had the nerve to say "nothing is perfect" and did nothing to make it right. What a response!!! If it wasn't for my friends whom I hadn't seen in a while, I would have taken it a step further but I didn't want to ruin our evening. I could NOT swallow the rare meat and the refried tempura was hard & dry . THIS USE TO BE A NICE PLACE TO COME TO. The QUALITY of the FOOD & SERVICE was HORRIBLE this time. A co-worker wanted to come here. I think he chose this place due to the price and not the quality. I went with a California roll and Philadelphia roll. The rolls were mediocre at best. The smoked salmon looked like it was sweating with water beads. Take a close look and see for yourself. The California roll was not impressive either. I just basically came in for two cups of water because nothing else was in the area. However, sushi is my favorite food and I am a sushi chef so I always like to try new places and show support to any sushi business I enter. Due to quarantine, they have all the tables pushed to the corners of the room and a table is set up to order to go. Each order takes about 15 minutes to complete so it's not too bad. The place was reasonably busy so I'll assume it does pretty well in this area. I ordered a king roll for me and my friend to split because she doesn't like sushi much so I wanted to ease her in a bit. If I remember correctly the king roll had shrimp tempura and crab mix and cucumber on the inside and avocado and unagi sauce on top. We waited until we got back to the hotel to eat it, but it was considerably good. The roll was tight. The rice was made right. The presentation was decent for to go. I recommend this spot and if I'm ever in the area again I'll be sure to pull up. read more

Solid Japanese restaurant in the area if you're craving sushi/sashimi, bento boxes, and udon. Lunch specials here are solid for a two item combo, salad, and rice for $9.95+ or two item bento boxes with soup, rice, and salad for $11.95+. Portions here are large as well so it's a great deal for the portion size. Sashimi, lion roll, fried squid, and scallop rolls aren't the best I've ever had but they are good and the rolls here are filling. The fried squid appetizer was tasty and wasn't too oily or tempura batter too thick. It's seems like a family owned restaurant so they are accommodating and friendly. However it does take time to get your food once you order and the check to pay so if you're in a rush just note in the beginning. Overall, the restaurant is clean, welcoming and has variety on their menu for whatever you may be craving. The restaurant is also located in a plaza for parking is free and fairly easy to get a spot out front. read more

This one's a toughie... I've always liked door dashing from here because it's affordable and the rolls are okay. Not great, the choices aren't always my favorite flavor profiles. However eating here is just... uncomfortable. It's just a room with tables and chairs, that's always empty. 9/10 times you'll be the only person there, sitting right in front of a desk where one person sits and watches you and another stands there staring waiting to wait on you. I have ate there for a decade weekly and the food and service has always been excellent . Tonight , I asked for a three item Bento box double salmon sashimi, and chicken and was told they could not make the order due to fish prices . I've placed the same order for over a decade and with an additional charge it hasn't been an issue . Also I've noticed the sashimi portion has been reduced to half over the past few months . :( Sadly , I will find another place for sushi . It really feels like it is under new ownership ! read more

Expensive but amazing. The fried tempura is so crispy and not oily. The seaweed salad is topped with fish eggs and you get a hefty serving too. I think this place has the BEST sashimi deluxe (yes, better than Shomi's... no offense I eat there too). We always order the lion roll- totally worth every penny. This is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Stockton and I've been coming here for years. When dining in, service is really slow and they're not always very friendly so I usually get takeout. They have a large selection of sushi rolls and the prices are really good compared to some of the other local places. Went here for lunch on a Tuesday at 11:00 am, right after they opened. Ordered one of the lunch special bento boxes with teriyaki salmon and shrimp katsu. We also got the potato croquette appetizer. The lunch special came with miso soup, which was piping hot when served. The potato croquettes were also very hot when served. After a few minutes, out bento boxes were served. The salmon teriyaki was very tender and the shrimp katsu was crispy (or crunchy). The bento box also came with a couple pieces of California rolls, a side salad, and a bowl of rice. One of the persons with us was a seven-year-old and did not even order food when I asked, where is that posted she said it's not we automatically do that and she even added her own tip. We got 3 House spicy tuna & a kapa maki. Fish is ALWAYS freshest. Around 20 years ago we were so excited they were getting ready to open in Lakewood mall in Lodi on Ham ln and then they opened Quail lakes and are still my most favorite Japanese restaurant. The owners are such nice people and care about their customers that's for sure. The food is prepared so good and made to look Beautiful. I'm already craving to go tomorrow and pick up dinner!! I love the food at Matsuyama. Am a regular and since S.I.P. in March, we have not been able to eat here. I love the lunch specials, because the quality and the quantity does not disappoint. 'Ita San' and wait staff are all friendly and courteous to our needs, orders and food recommendations. The Sushi and Sashimi are #1 -- totally the BEST and FRESH-est in town.
