I visited this restaurant pre-pandemic with a friend, since we both work close by. Upon walking in, you order at the counter and wait for your food, or take a seat at their tables. Besides taking your order, we barely interacted with any of the employees. The service is minimal, just like dining in at a fast food restaurant. My friend, who is vegetarian, found plenty of options to eat from their side menu. I ordered a plate of (very saucy and flavorful) wings, mac and cheese, and fries. As for the portion sizes, they're decent for what you pay! However, I would prefer if they had reusable plates, instead of packaging all of their orders in styrofoam boxes. read more

Signage caught our eye. After dropping off the kiddos to a birthday indoor soccer game we decided to look for a quick lunch. Upon walking in we notice there were some people sitting at the booths and a couple people standing by the ba area. Two gentlemen were handling the front for which we placed our order with one of them. We chose the fried shrimp meal with Mac and cheese, collard greens, rice and peas and a corn bread muffin as well as an order of lobster bites with fries. Shortly after placing the order and waited for about 10 minutes we realized that they were obviously understaffed. I overheard one of the gentlemen on the phone talking about needing more help and that there were not enough people in the kitchen. This was a bummer because what would've normally took up to 15 minutes to order for takeout ended up taking 45-50 due to the short staff. Aside from that the food was ok. Not blow your mind fantastic but just ok. Lobster bites were hot and seasoned well but the fries that came with it were not that great. The shrimp was pretty good as well as the collard greens and corn bread. I work in the area and decided to try a new place. There's a lot of soul food spots in the area but I've had my eye on Mattie's for a while. Parking is a bit tricky here but doable. The atmosphere inside is nice, plenty of booths. I ordered the fried chicken dinner. I must admit I was a bit disappointed because I was expecting whole pieces of fried chicken like thighs and drumsticks as opposed to wings. They were still pretty tasty and good for the price, I just wish if I would've known it would be wings I would've gotten it with a sauce or flavor. I was in a rush so all I could do was add hot sauce at that point. The collard greens were delicious! I ate all of it. The Mac and cheese was also pretty awesome I only wish they served more of it! Visited this place on Sunday, specifically to try the cornbread dressing. First red flag, every website said the restaurant opened at noon. I pulled up only to be advised the place opened at 1pm. I really wanted to try this place so I drove around for an hour & came back. Only to be advised they needed an additional 5 minutes, 20 minutes later the doors were finally opened. This review is hard for me because there are some things about this place that I really love! So I had the fried chicken dinner. Let me start by saying they almost never have sweet potatoes so I got Mac and cheese and collard greens. My collard greens were fresh..unseasoned..unsalted the Mac and cheese was ok. Now u have a choice of rice and peas or yellow risk every and since I got fried chicken I thought yellow rice made more sense. Wrong decision...the yellow rice is really bad..it tastes like a really cheap straight out of the box brand..like a burnt rubber taste. The fried chicken was PHENOMENAL ! The chicken was literally soooooo good that it almost made up for the other things. Also they keep the salt shakers, hot sauce, utensils, etc. at the counter so I will find yourself getting up and asking for things quite often. Overall decent meal with the exception of the rice. Even under construction they didn't skip a beat with the food. From the thick juicy Pork Chops and the mile high Meat Loaf adding Seafood rice with the Cajun collards.. For taste and flavor this place should be 4 stars most days but they lack consistency. I have driven 30+ minutes to get to this sketchy ambiance of a restaurant, only to find them closed before their scheduled closing. I won't even start on the parking or lack there of. The food is just ok .... Not for the 75$ paid for 4 dinners. The yams come out of a can. Mac and cheese good. The collards were good... the cabbage was good. The place could use a good cleaning. Windows were dirty. Tables were not clean. The area is a little sketchy but I've visited a hood before so I know what to expect. The chicken had good flavor. It was just ok to me. Everything was Great. I'm a truck driver and sometimes it's hard to find good on the road. I found this on "Yelp" and it was 3 blocks from where I'm delivering. The young lady that took my order greeted me as I entered the establishment (awesome, I like that). The inside appeared to be clean, no crazy odors and gospel music playing(it's Sunday). The wait time wasn't bad, I'd say 10 - 15 min. All my food had good flavor and was still hot when I got back to my truck. I WILL BE BACK, EVERY time I'm in this area. read more

I had been looking for Soulfood oxtail for a couple of months now. My coworker had suggested Mattie's to me but she said I would need to order on the phone because it might be a lengthy wait.I finally decided to go with another coworker. The cashier was very nice and she enjoyed my conversation. I,obviously enough ordered the oxtail and my coworker ordered the fried chicken. My oxtail came within 5 minutes, but my coworkers food took over 20 mins. We ordered to-go and felt like we waited a long time. When we got back to eat, my coworker raved about how the fried chicken is in her top 10 and I liked the oxtails I just wish it was more gravy based and had a little more flavoring. As of late, this is my spot when I want soul food that only a grandma can cook! Food is very good. My family and I had a great spread: grilled pork chops, grilled shrimp, fried shrimp, meatloaf, short ribs, oxtails and turkey wings. Seafood rice, yellow rice, pigeon peas and rice, collards w/turkey, Mac n cheese, yams and dressing. Washed it down with special punch. It is too sweet, but it is Good! Mr. Aubrey, the owner and Shy gave great customer service! My first-time experience lead me to return the following week. The food is consistent and that is what's important for restaurants to stay afloat. I wish I had tried this place sooner. It's the drive from Ft Lauderdale that kept me away. I was craving soul food while in Miami last summer for some reason and quickly found this spot. We were not disappointed. Heard about this place thru word of mouth and decided I try it myself and I must say this place has turned in to a regular spot for me. I am traveling to the area for a little vacation and I ate here Saturday. I am soo disappointed that google told me that this is one if the best soul food places Miami had to offer. I ordered fried chicken wings, macaroni, and yellow rice. The rice was dry. The only thing the macaroni had going for it was that it was baked and cheesy but the noodles tasted like the water it was boiled in BLAND. That was quite possible the worst fried chicken I've EVER tasted. Maybe I didnt order the right thing they seemed to have plenty if delicious things on the menu. But after eating that I don't know that i would trust it enough to try it. Maybe I will give it a second shot and try something different. This wasnt to be mean but it's my honest opinion. Went here for lunch with coworkers 2 of us had Turkey wings, I had peas and rice, mac and cheese and string beans. My coworker sides were peas and rice, yams and string beans. Not so good. I drove 45 min to try this place. Here's some suggestions - don't offer Mac and cheese if you won't cook it with enough cheese. Was very dry and flavorless. - offer at least 2 types of fish. Everybody don't eat Tilapia. It's not even a real fish. - the cabbage had good texture but no flavor. - remove the chic from the front with the lacefront and brown contacts. I wish somebody else would come hard with some good soul food. The customer service is wack and they unprofessional as hell.
