The food was delicious. Please note that this is a take out spot. The people here are nice, the cook also came from the back and was kind and cordial. The shrimp, mac and cheese was bussing. I like to get the yellow rice, mac n cheese and the jiving wings. I do think that the rice can use a stronger flavor profile but the mac n cheese and wings make up for it. The sauce is really good, so I try to get extra sauce on the side. I also like the grits and fish and/or the grits with shrimp. I prefer the grits with fish. It's deep fried and very flavorful. I like the grits that they use and they season it very well. The food is consistently cooked well. There is always really good breading on the wings and the fish. I normally pay the upcharge to get all drums (Yes, I'm doing you guys a favor by leaving all the wings). The times that I have gone in the store, service has been good, I do feel that it's on the slower side but the food is cooked to order and comes out hot. Even when I order for delivery, there are times when it is still relatively warm, you know when you get something delivered it goes all around the world before you get it. Terrible customer service I WILL NEVER BE BACK!! I ordered food Friday at 8pm to pick up at 8:55pm and when I arrived at 9:05 the restaurant was closed even though online says it closes at 10pm. Luckily I stayed in the parking lot looking for other places to eat since the place was closed I finally got a call from the restaurant. On the phone the guy stated he called me several times and wanted to know when I was coming to pick the food up. he kept saying the food was right here as if I could walk in and grab the food. No one was visibly at the front of the restaurant and the door was locked. When I met him to get my food he kept saying they called me and left a voicemail and I showed him I didn't get a single call or voice mail he said "oh well we called" and was adamant that he did even though I didn't have a call. I've been to this restaurant several times before and all times the food has been good with the exception of yesterday's visit. I ordered two fried shrimp dinners, Mac & cheese, candied yams and rice, one of the dinners had the twangy sauce for an additional fee. The quality of the food was terrible! The shrimp tasted as if it was previously fried in the past, the yams looked as if it were scraps from the pan, the mac had cheese on the top part only (see pictures). I have ordered here in the past and I love love the food. The building is small so there is no seating inside. Only to go orders. I ate here during pandemic as well as for thanksgiving job pot luck. For the pot luck I ordered the Mac n cheese. We was going to have about 10-12 people. So I ordered 2 pans in order for people to have double servings and take some home for leftovers. I'm so glad I ordered two pans. Everyone finished the first pan and half the second pan. I would order again. The pans was $65 for both total. I even called it in last minute two days before and they was able to accommodate. I picked the pans up at 7pm an it was fresh out the oven. I'm always worried when black owned restaurants expand because one normally gets the short end of the stick. I ordered gumbo I'll upload the photo it was just grease and rice, I ordered red beans and rice. It wasn't edible neither was the gumbo. I also ordered fish dinner with macaroni and cheese. Wow!! Phenomenal food and service. All 5 stars.. the restaurant sits behind the Burger King inside a plaza in a corner. Immediately entering the business, my friend and I was greeted in a friendly manner from a young lady ( I didn't get her name, but she was very nice). She explained the menu to us and even convinced us to "cheat" and try out their delicious cakes. Me and my friend orders the fried ribs which came with rice and 2 sides. I came from out of town, so I was looking forward to trying some collard greens and grits. I had to take one star off for this. With that said, the food here is really amazing! I ordered the grilled shrimp combo with a side of mac and cheese, creole rice, and red beans. The food was seasoned to perfection! My favorite was the crispy shrimp, which is butterflied and lightly fried. The food takes about 15 to come out, but everything is fresh and comes right out of the kitchen to your plate. My mom called me one Friday evening saying she wanted soul food. Where she lives, there aren't many soul food options and I wasn't in the mood to drive all over the place. As a rule of thumb,I relay on my trusty and reliable, YELP! And as always, Yelp, came through with Shuckin and Jivin'. S&J, is off the 826 and between 47th and 57th avenue in a small strip plaza tucked in the cut of a Pentecostal church and electronic repair store. Upon entering S&J, there was a young lady mopping the floor, and wiping down the rustic look countertop and walls. We waited about 2 to 3 mins before entering because the floor was wet. Needless to say, I was a bit annoyed but, stayed on course... We approached the counter which is about a yard away from the door. We glared at the menu on the wall, then my mom said, I'll have the fish, yams and rice. She wanted collard greens, but there was a food warning on them. All I wanted was a conch fritter..but I ask the lady 1st, "are they good", she proudly boosted, "yes, they are our best seller" so, you know, I gave that silent but effective stare eye to eye, like really..., are they really good? She gave me that nod, I was like ok, I'll take the $7 conch fritter, please. We sat down at 1 of the 3 small tables and begin listening to the smooth sounds of R&B music I grew up listening to, like; I'll take you there, back stabbers, R-E-S-P-E-C-T, Georgia on my mind, Sexual Healing and many other fingers snappin, foot tappin, shoulders swaying songs that made me reflect on growing up in the 60's when family, food and music bought us together. I fondly remember my uncle Rufus who has gone on to Glory, he loved dancin, always had a huge smile on his face, with his big cowboy hat on, dungereens, wide collar, snap down shirt. He use to always say, while dancin, "ain't nothing betta than Shuckin and Jivin"... Being in S&J that Friday night bought back all those wonderful memories. Love the vibe in there. We got our order about 25 mins later, my mom's HOTtt food was in clear plastic container, which I thought why on earth would they put hot food in a plastic clear container because the food was so hot, it started melting the container. Nonetheless,moms loved the food. And to me, this speaks volumes as my mom is show nuff THE best southern soul food cook I know! And her peach cobbler is to die for! Which by the way, she ordered and said it was good as well! I was like....shut my mouth! Because moms know GOOD food! Therefore, it's rare when she say something is good. So KUDOS and BIG ups S&J! My conch fritter came out in a brown paper bag wrapped in wax paper and paper towel to absorb the oil. I couldn't wait to get my foodie behind in the car, to break off a tip of that hot fritter. A true hidden gem and hole in the wall for soul food very close to home. My friend found this small spot on an Instagram ad and after looking at their menu we decided we had to check it out. Very small spot, only two or three tables for 2 people inside I believe. A line usually does form for lunch, so carry out is definitely recommended. First time having shrimp and grits and I was blown away. Didn't get the chance to have one of their desserts, but that doesn't mean they weren't calling my name. Man this place seriously has some good food! And I wish I wasn't currently on a "cleanse" so I could go back. I got the Jivin wings, Cajun rice, string beans, and Mac & cheese. Initially I was disappointed they didn't have any dressing but as soon as I OPENED my food container I quickly got over it. Everything I had was so tasty. I will only say the rice was a bit too wet for my liking but I still ate it lol. My sister had the Jivin shrimp with similar sides except she got the collard greens instead of string beans which were also delicious. Placed a pickup order tonight. I ordered the jivin shrimp with the collard greens and red beans. The shrimp are absolutely delicious. The sauce is sweet and a little spicy. The rice was perfectly cooked. The red beans tasted so good. It tasted like they had been stewed and seasoned really good. The collard greens are amazing. The chicken wings (can't remember the flavor) are sooooo good! Loved them. The Cajun rice is good if you're into that flavor. The Mac n cheese was ok. Not much flavor, just noodles and cheese is all I really got. I am not into Yams (sweet potatoes) but theirs were okay. I think if you like yams you will enjoy these. I was finally able to check this place out. I've had my eye on them for some time now. I hadn't had breakfast but I was willing to skip what I usually have for breakfast and go for some fried shrimp. The place is nestled in a small shopping plaza and can be easily missed. It was early afternoon, a VERY HOT DAY. As soon as I walked in I was warmly greeted by a beautiful smile from an employee there named Julia. Julia was so kind and answered all of my questions. My main concern was knowing if there is any pork in the Cajun rice, collard greens, or string beans. No pork! Great! The place is definitely small. Two small tables inside that seat 2 people each and I found out that they took over another unit in the shopping plaza for more seating, a stage, and space in general. I really enjoyed my meal however there were a few things I didn't like. PROS: Cajun rice, fried shrimp, GEECHEE GRITS (my favorite side!!... WOW. They are BOMB DOT COM!) Another person in my party ordered the grilled shrimp so I was able to see how it was very clean, and it was butterflied. Their sauces were very good! I loved both that came with my food. Lemonade was nice.. but I that flavor tastes too familiar. I have a strong feeling I know what was used to make this lemonade. It tastes like the lemonade that my elementary school teachers used to drink from the cafeteria. I liked it, but I know it's not fresh squeezed lemons. ;-) lol Bread pudding tasted good but.... (read the rest in cons). CONS: (About the bread pudding)... It's refrigerated, so I didn't like that it was cold. It was very hard to cut into. Was too dense. But the flavor is right! They do not offer any other drinks besides their 2 juices and sweet tea, and their brand of bottled water. No sodas. My mac and cheese did not taste fresh. It also didn't look fresh. Looking at the photos of other customers, I can tell which was fresh and which isn't, and mine also had lots of burnt cheese on top. Their bottled water sells for $2. Nothing special about the water and the wrapper on it literally looks like it was printed and cut from a home printer. It wasn't cold, was just slightly cooler than room temp. The extra room that had more seating is way too dark. You can tell they are sill trying to fix it up... we felt like we were sitting in a storage room somewhere. The door had a big heavy curtain that you had to move out the way to get out and it was pretty dirty. There was no restroom in that unit. There was a door but no restroom sign, so not sure if that was it? So in general, I will definitely return however I know now what to order for next time. If you plan on eating there, and you are used to having soda with your food, you might want to grab some soda before you head there. If you're not sure which side to order, do yourself a favor and get the grits. I am glad that a place like this exists that appreciates and displays some of the great Black legends in music's history. I loved the vibe and the music playing. I hope that they expand and use the reviews to do some tweaking. I would love to see them open more locations. I will definitely support.
